Preparation and thermal performance study of a novel hydrated salt composite PCM for space heating

Zijian He,Hongting Ma,Shilei Lu

In order to effectively address the mismatch between thermal energy supply and demand in buildings, latent heat storage (LHS) based on phase change material (PCM) stands out as a key technology. While hydrated salt has emerged as a promising PCM, it encounters common issues such as substantial supercooling, phase separation, and low thermal conductivity , hindering its development. To mitigate these limitations, this study focused on modifying Ba(OH) 2 ·8H 2 O by incorporating various nucleating agents and thickening agents to reduce supercooling, enhancing the composite PCM's thermal properties by introducing expanded graphite (EG) to elevate thermal conductivity . Subsequently, the thermal stability of the PCM was evaluated through accelerated thermal cycling tests, encompassing the assessment of critical thermal parameters, including supercooling degree, enthalpy, and thermal conductivity of the composite PCM. Experimental findings unveiled the effectiveness of incorporating 2 wt% BaCl 2 ·2H 2 O and 1 wt% CMC to Ba(OH) 2 ·8H 2 O, effectively diminishing the supercooling degree from 14 °C to 1.42 °C. Further integration of 3.5 wt% EG led to a substantial decrease in the supercooling degree to 0.24 °C. Simultaneously, the addition of EG resulted in an improvement in thermal conductivity , elevating it from 0.62 W/(m·K) to 1.03 W/(m·K), while the enthalpy decreased from 283.68 J/g to 252.81 J/g. Notably, the composite PCM exhibited notable thermal reliability with a latent heat drop of 15.9 % following 1000 accelerated cycles of testing. Moreover, the composite PCM demonstrated superior thermal storage density, measuring at 2.36 times that of traditional paraffin wax , yet with a thermal storage cost merely a quarter of paraffin wax, rendering it more favorable for extensive deployment in building energy systems .

Novel method for microencapsulation of eutectic hydrated salt as a phase change material for thermal energy storage

Huo Xianliang,Xie Donghuan,Zhao Zimo,Wang Shujun,Meng Fanbin

Inorganic hydrated salts have many advantages over organic phase change materials (PCMs), such as higher thermal storage density, low cost, non-toxicity and non-flammability. In this research, microcapsules loaded with eutectic hydrated salt (EHS) as the core material was fabricated via coacervation method at room temperature, with ethyl cellulose/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene as the shell material. EHS consisted of sodium sulfate decahydrate and disodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate with a mass ratio of 1:3 was prepared as the PCM with its phase change temperature of 29.3°C and phase change enthalpy of 218.58 J/g. The chemical structures and morphology were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope. Results indicates that the almost spherical microcapsules, with diameter around 60 μm, are of core–shell microstructures and good chemical compatibility of the core and shell material. Differential scanning calorimetry results shows that microcapsules possess a high latent heat (178.36 J/g) and excellent thermal stability and reliability, which are suitable for thermal energy storage and management in practical applications. More importantly, the simple and environmentally conscious way of this study may be extended to other promising inorganics@organics PCMs with different core–shell structured compositions.

Preparation and characterization of microencapsulated phase change materials containing inorganic hydrated salt with silica shell for thermal energy storage

Zhifang Liu,Zhonghua Chen,Fei Yu

Inorganic hydrated salts have many advantages over organic phase change materials , such as high thermal storage density, low-cost and non-toxic. Herein, we microencapsulated sodium phosphate dodecahydrate (DSP) with silica through interfacial polymerization combined with sol-gel process and systematically investigated the effects of the reaction conditions on the morphology and encapsulation efficiency of the microcapsules. SEM and TEM were used to characterize the morphology and microstructure of the microcapsules, and the lattice fringes and crystal diffraction ring of DSP inside the microcapsules can be observed by high-resolution TEM and the selected area electron diffraction (SAED). The chemical composition and crystalline structure of the microcapsule were detected by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD), which demonstrated the presence of DSP. DSC results indicated that the microcapsule prepared at 40 °C for 8 h with the core/shell mass ratio of 4: 1 had the highest encapsulation efficiency of 75.3% with the melting enthalpy of 177.0 J/g. The good thermoregulating performance of the microcapsule was demonstrated by adding it to the building model and comparing its temperature variation with the model without any microcapsule. Owing to the facile preparation, large latent heat, good thermal reliability and excellent thermoregulating performance, the obtained microcapsules will have a good prospect in thermal energy storage application.

Economical and shape-stabilized hydrated salt/bagasse biomass-derived carbon phase change composite for thermal energy storage

Ting Wang,Wei Cui,Xiangxuan Li,Ting Ma,Qiuwang Wang

Due to their high heat storage density, low cost, and non-inflammability, hydrated salts have significant potential for application in thermal energy storage for buildings. Hydrated salts, however, have a few drawbacks, including high supercooling degree, unstable shape, and phase separation. In general, materials such as graphite, aerogel, and foam metal are commonly used to provide support for hydrated salts in order to mitigate or eliminate their drawbacks. While these currently used supporting materials have expensive and complicated production procedures. In this study, we developed bagasse biomass-derived carbon (BBC) materials to obtain easily accessible, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly support materials. Using the high-temperature carbonization method, the bagasse made from biological waste displayed a highly oriented and stacked lamellar structure. This not only significantly lowered the cost but also made the storage of hydrated salts easier. A straightforward vacuum impregnation technique was used to create SSD-SC/BBC phase change composites (PCCs). In comparison to sodium sulfate decahydrate (SSD), the developed SSD-SC/BBC9 PCCs exhibited a higher thermal storage capacity of 161.5 J/g, along with an exceptionally low supercooling degree. They also demonstrated the higher thermal conductivity of 1.79 W·m −1 ·K −1 , improved thermal reliability, and enhanced solar-thermal energy conversion ability. Compared to other support materials, the economic analysis using static and dynamic payback periods demonstrates that the utilization of biomass-derived carbon as a support material for phase change materials (PCMs) is cost-effective, with lower preparation costs and a shorter payback period. A simple, affordable, and environmentally friendly method for utilizing hydrated salts in thermal energy storage for buildings is provided by SSD-SC/BBC9 PCCs.

Electrochromism via reversible electrodeposition of solid iodine

Li Shanlin,Chen Yingyu,Wang Zhen,Wang Mengmeng,Guo Xianglin,Tang Xueqing,Wang Xiaoyu,Lai Wende,Tong Meiyun,Wang Changhong,Cong Shan,Geng Fengxia,Chen Yong,Zhao Zhigang

Electrochromic materials were discovered in the 1960s when scientists observed reversible changes between the light and dark states in WO 3 thin films under different voltages. Since then, researchers have identified various electrochromic material systems, including transition metal oxides, polymer materials, and small molecules. However, the electrochromic phenomenon has rarely been observed in non-metallic elemental substances. Herein, we propose the development of non-metallic iodine electrodeposition-based electrochromic dynamic windows using a water-in-salt electrolyte containing iodine ions. The unique electrolyte environment and solvation structure of the water-in-salt electrolyte suppress the dissolution and shuttle effect of iodine, thereby achieving a different reaction pathway compared to traditional electrolytes. This pathway involves a reversible solid-liquid transition between solid iodine and solvated iodide ions. The iodine electrodeposition-based electrochromic dynamic window demonstrates a high optical contrast of 76.0% with near colour neutrality and excellent cycling stability. A practical 400 cm 2 complementary dynamic window is fabricated to demonstrate good electrochromic performance, including high optical contrast, a near colour-neutral opaque state, fast response time, uniform modulation, and polarity-switchable functionality.

Advancing bromine-ion batteries: A breakthrough in “Water-in-Salt” electrolyte for safe and sustainable energy storage

Lixiang Wang,Jingwen Li,Mingqiang Li,Xinping Duan,Haochen Weng,Shuailiang Xu

In this study, we introduce a novel “water-in-salt” electrolyte for Bromine-ion batteries (BIBs) for the first time: 3M AlCl 3  + 1M NH 4 Br. The 3M AlCl 3 establishes the “water-in-salt” system, while 1M NH 4 Br supplies Br- ions. Employing flexible graphite paper as the cathode, during charging, Br- cooperates with AlCl 3 , forming AlCl 3 Br - ions that embed into the graphite paper, resulting in reversible reactions during discharge. The anode utilizes various metals such as Zn, Cu, Pb, In 2 O 3 , undergoing reversible redox reactions in the charge–discharge process. The designed electrolyte effectively prevents elemental bromine generation, presenting a safe, green, and environmentally friendly aqueous electrolyte suitable for BIBs.

Salt hydrate/expanded vermiculite composite as a form-stable phase change material for building energy storage

Ning Xie,Jianmin Luo,Zhongping Li,Zhaowen Huang,Xuenong Gao,Yutang Fang,Zhengguo Zhang

An investigation on a new type of shape-stabilized phase change material (PCM) prepared by impregnating eutectic salt hydrate (Na 2 SO 4 ·10H 2 O-Na 2 CO 3 ·10H 2 O with 1:1 in mass ratio) into expanded vermiculite (EV) is carried out in this study. The maximum mass percentage of Na 2 SO 4 ·10H 2 O-Na 2 CO 3 ·10H 2 O eutectic within the composite is determined as 60%. The chemical composition of EV is measured by X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometer (XRF). The specific surface area of EV and raw vermiculite (RV) is characterized by Brunauer-Aemmett-Teller (BET) method. The results from Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) tests reveal that eutectic salt hydrate fully filled in the multilayer structure of EV and had good compatibility among the components of the composites. The phase change temperature and the melting enthalpy of the composites are 23.98 °C and 110.3 J/g respectively, which are measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Good thermal and structural reliability are also demonstrated by thermal gravimetric analysis (TG) techniques and thermal cycling tests. Moreover, the low thermal conductivity with 0.192 W/ (m K) tested by the Hot Disk via transient plane source method certifies that the composite is very applicable for insulation. The composite PCM is then tested in a reduced-scale test chamber outfitted with four thin PCM panels as insulated wallboards. The indoor temperature variations of the PCM room is compared with another identical chamber without PCM layer for evaluating the thermal regulating performance. The results show that the composite has the function of maintaining the indoor temperature at a comfortable range for a longer period and distinctly influenced the time delay. All analysis results indicate that the low-cost salt hydrate/EV composite can exert a great deal of influence on insulation in building energy conservation .

Based on the water-in-salt system, VOC is used as the cathode of the chloride ion batteries

Jingwen Li,Mingqiang Li,Haochen Weng,Shuailiang Xu

Chloride ion batteries (CIBs) are considered promising candidates in the field of batteries. Safety concerns are a major issue in battery technology, which can be effectively addressed by using water-in-salt electrolyte. However, traditional CIBs suffer from issues such as poor lifespan and low cycling capacity. Therefore, our research proposes a novel aqueous CIB composed of a VOC (Vanadium pentoxide doped with graphite) cathode, a zinc anode, and (CH 3 ) 4 NCl + LiCl aqueous electrolyte for the first time. The developed battery boasts advantages such as low cost, arbitrary folding, lightweight design, and overall safety. The battery exhibits a high discharge platform of approximately 2.5V and considerable discharge capacity, reaching a maximum of 3.49mAh cm −2 at a current density of 1A g −1 . After 200 cycles, the capacity retention rate remains around 77 %. Notably, the battery is very simple to fabricate and burn in flames at a temperature of 1300 °C without explosion. And it is also able to work normally when subjected to folding, rolling, and piercing. This low-cost, flexible, and safe novel aqueous chloride-ion battery holds great application potential in portable devices, automotive, military, and other industries, opening up new possibilities for the future development of batteries.

Preparation and characterization of high-enthalpy inorganic hydrated salt phase change materials based on sodium silicate precursor

Ma Qianyu,Gao Wei

Phase change materials (PCMs) exhibit a promising application as a heat storage medium in battery thermal management. However, the flammability, low thermal conductivity, and leakage problems of organic PCMs constrain the development. In this study, a novel strategy based on inorganic hydrated salt with natural nonflammability was proposed. Sodium acetate trihydrate and disodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate composite materials (SAT-DSP) were synthesized without affecting the properties. The prepared SD@SiO 2 with sodium silicate as the precursor, while SAT-DSP as the core material, possessed the dual heat storage performance of phase transition and thermochemical heat storage. The SiO 2 shell with a dense surface successfully realized the encapsulation of SAT-DSP, and the combined effect of heterogeneous nucleation and mesoporous confinement effectively inhibited the phase separation of phase change materials. The optimal ratio of SD@SiO 2 was determined through a comprehensive analysis of morphology, thermal stability, and thermal storage properties. The heat storage density was up to 509.18 J g −1 with a phase transition temperature of 78.78 °C. It improved the chemical instability and leakage of hydrated salts and centralized the dehydration process of SAT-DSP to achieve rapid response. Even after continuous heating on a 120 °C heating platform for 30 min, the surface temperature of SD@SiO 2 was maintained within a safe range (< 65 °C). This inorganic phase change material exhibited considerable potential for application in battery thermal runaway protection.

Optimal design of multi-layer structure composite containing inorganic hydrated salt phase change materials and cement: Lab-scale tests for buildings

Lijie Liu,Jinhong Li,Yong Deng,Zhiwei Yang,Kaiyue Huang,Siyi Zhao

Phase change materials with an ability to store the renewable thermal energy find widespread applications as building materials and temperature control devices. In this study, a lightweight and energy-efficient temperature regulating material based on the sandwich structure of Na 2 SO 4 ·10H 2 O, expanded vermiculite and magnesium oxychloride cement has been reported. The composite material responded in the range 20–40 °C and extended the heating and cooling period of the indoor temperature. The developed material exhibited an improved application performance as compared to the traditional heat preservation materials. Further, the supercooling of Na 2 SO 4 ·10H 2 O/expanded vermiculite was determined to be 1.20 °C, along with shape stability. Different synthesis methods and phase change materials with cement were explored to minimize the degradation of the thermal regulation performance, and the sandwich structure was observed to exhibit the optimal performance. Owing to the low thermal conductivity of Na 2 SO 4 ·10H 2 O/expanded vermiculite and magnesium oxychloride cement, the extended holding time of the indoor temperature was observed. The developed material exhibits significant potential for future applications as self-regulating materials and novel temperature control devices in which the optimal thermo-physical properties are desirable.

Towards the understanding of acetonitrile suppressing salt precipitation mechanism in a water-in-salt electrolyte for low-temperature supercapacitors

Yinglun Sun,Yue Wang,Lingyang Liu,Bao Liu,Qingnuan Zhang,Dandan Wu,Hongzhang Zhang,Xingbin Yan

Although water-in-salt (WIS) electrolytes have significantly extended the voltage window of aqueous batteries and supercapacitors, the inevitable precipitation of highly concentrated salts at low temperatures leads to performance degradation and even failure of devices. The introduction of an organic co-solvent can effectively overcome this crucial drawback; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Herein, we demonstrate the study of acetonitrile (ACN) suppressing salt precipitation mechanism in NaClO4-based WIS electrolytes through combining theoretical simulation and experimental analyses. ACN molecules strongly coordinate with Na+ ions to change the solvation structure of the cation–anion from aggregates to contact ion pairs and/or solvent separated ion pairs, weakening the interaction between anions and cations, thereby suppressing the precipitation of NaClO4. Furthermore, using the hybrid electrolyte, a built carbon-based supercapacitor achieves a voltage window of 2.3 V. Impressively, it also retains 86.5% of the room-temperature capacitance and exhibits excellent rate capability and temperature resistance at an ultra-low temperature of −50 °C. This work provides guidance for non-inert co-solvents suppressing salt precipitation, which helps to obtain desired electrolytes for reliable low-temperature supercapacitors.

Shape-stable hydrated salt based composite phase change materials with good flexibility, thermal reliability, and flame-retardant properties

Zhiheng Pan,Maoyong Zhi,Huajian Cui,Qinrou Xu,Qiang Sun,Quanyi Liu

Novel eutectic-MEG phase change material (PCM) was prepared by physical blend methods using sodium acetate trihydrate, glycine, disodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate, and hydrophilic modified expanded graphite (MEG). The eutectic-MEG was introduced into silicone rubber to prepare the low-cost and shape-stable composite PCM (SSPCM). SEM analysis showed that the dispersion of the eutectic-MEG mixture was homogeneous in the SSPCMs. The flexibility of SSPCM improved with the increased amount of silicone rubber. Additionally, the thermal cycle and anti-leakage experiments suggested that SSPCM possessed good thermal reliability. SSPCM-55 showed an enthalpy value of 128.1 J/g, melting temperature of 48.36 °C, thermal conductivity of 0.81 W/(m·K), subcooling degree of 2.7 °C, only 2.7 % enthalpy loss after 100 heating and cooling cycles, and leakage rates of 2.65 %. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) values of all the SSPCMs were above 90 %, and they passed the UL-94 test with a V-0 rating. In addition, as the content of hydrated salts increased, the capacity of phase change thermal storage was significantly improved. This study provides beneficial ideas for the preparation of multifunctional PCMs in building energy conservation and thermal management of electronic products.
