Influence of water on the properties of hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent

Qiang Zheng,Fuxin Yang,Houzhang Tan,Xiaopo Wang

Deep eutectic solvent (DES) shows excellent absorption performance in the field of CO 2 capture. It is considered as a new green absorption solvent to replace monoethanolamine. In the industry, the presence of water not only affects the structural stability of the solvent, but also affects its thermophysical properties. In this work, three kinds of hydrophobic DES were prepared. Based on the study of their structural characteristics and thermal stability, the density and viscosity of DES with water mixture were measured in the temperature range of 298.15 ∼ 338.15 K at atmospheric pressure. It was demonstrated that the trace water did not destroy the structure of DES, but it formed hydrogen bonds with DES. The increase water destroyed the structure of DES and formed hydrogen bonds with hydrogen bond donor (HBD) and hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA), respectively. Moreover, the hard sphere model was applied to study the viscosity, and after introducing the binary interaction parameter, the average absolute relative deviation of the mixture reduced to 4.4 ∼ 7.7 %.

Effect of water on the separation of phenol from model oil with choline chloride via forming deep eutectic solvent

Shu-Hang Ren,Ying Xiao,Yi-Ming Wang,Jie Kong,Yu-Cui Hou,Wei-Ze Wu

Choline chloride (ChCl) was demonstrated to efficiently separate phenols from model oils by forming deep eutectic solvents (DESs). The DES way is a non-aqueous process that avoids the use of mineral alkalis and acids, and prevents the production of wastewater containing phenol. However, real oils, such as coal tar oil and liquefaction oil, consist of a small amount of water, and ChCl is a strong hygroscopic compound, which may influence the removal of phenol in real oil. In this work, the effect of water in mixtures of phenol and toluene (defined as model oils) on the separation of phenol by forming DES with ChCl was studied. The results indicated that water could interact with ChCl to form DES and the interaction between water and ChCl was stronger than that between phenol and ChCl. In the presence of water in model oils, the amount of ChCl should be increased to get the same phenol removal as that without water. Moreover, with water in model oils, the influence of temperature on the phenol removal was more negative. After the reuse of ChCl for four cycles with the presence of water, ChCl accumulated about 23% water and the removal efficiency of phenol decreased from 92% to 87%. To reduce the effect of water on phenol separation, an air drying method could be used to remove water in regenerated ChCl.

Unusual Effect of Trace Water on the Structure and Activity of NixCo1−x Electrocatalysts for the Methanol Oxidation Reaction

Ronghui Que,Maolin Li,Hong Yao,Xiuhua Wang,Fan Liao,Mingwang Shao

Graphical Just add water : A mere trace of water roughly halves the size and regulates the composition of polyhedral Ni x Co 1− x alloy nanoparticles prepared by the polyol method. The Ni 0.6 Co 0.4 nanoparticle alloy obtained by adding 70 μL of water shows superior electrocatalytic performance in the methanol oxidation reaction owing to its appropriate Ni/Co ratio and is a promising electrocatalyst for use in direct methanol fuel cells. Highly active Ni-based catalysts have attracted much attention but are still facing challenges owing to the immature synthetic method. Herein, polyhedral Ni x Co 1− x alloy was prepared by a facile modified polyol method in which a trace amount of water could halve the particle size of the alloy. The Ni/Co ratios in Ni x Co 1− x alloy strictly depended on the used amount of water owing to the different solubilities of the precursors. Among them, the Ni 0.6 Co 0.4 nanoparticles obtained with 70 μL of deionized water exhibited the best performance in the methanol oxidation reaction with a peak current density of 116 mA cm −2 in the presence of 1 m NaOH+0.5 m CH 3 OH solution, which is higher than those of Ni 0.7 Co 0.3 (80 mA cm −2 ) and Ni 0.5 Co 0.5 (33 mA cm −2 ). The excellent performance of Ni 0.6 Co 0.4 is attributed to the unique structure with appropriate Ni/Co ratio, which elongates the C−O bond in methanol and lowers the reaction free energy according to DFT calculations.

Analyses and rates of reactions influenced by water in synthesis of polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers from trioxane and methylal

Chen Cao,Guilin Liu,Feng Xin,Qian Lei,Xiaofei Qin,Yachen Yin,Honglin Chen,Atta Ullah

Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODE n ) are promising diesel blend components with high oxygen content, high cetane number and similar properties to diesel. In this paper, we conducted a series of experiments for synthesizing PODE n over a HZSM-5 catalyst in a batch stirred autoclave using methylal and trioxane as reactants. Our research focused on the water influence on these syntheses by contrasting the differences from experiments with or without water and built reaction pathway and rate laws. The experimental and kinetic results showed that decrease of water amount could not only increase yields of the PODE n but also reduce the influences on formation rates of the desired products and eliminate some side reactions. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize water amount in the raw materials for balancing costs of the feed and operation as well as yields of the products to maximize the economy in a commercial production of PODE n .

Influence of seawater on interfacial Properties, foam performance and aggregation behaviour of Fluorocarbon/Hydrocarbon surfactant mixtures

Xiaoyang Yu,Xuyang Miao,Huan Li,Ke Qiu,Ruowen Zong,Qian Li

In this work, the influence of seawater on interfacial properties, foam performance and aggregation behaviour of fluorocarbon/hydrocarbon surfactant mixtures was systematically investigated. Two model foaming solutions containing different surfactants (nonionic APG, anionic SDS, and amphoteric FS-50) were prepared by deionized water and seawater, respectively. Multi-scale methods including surface tension measurements, foam ageing tests and cryogenic-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) were used. The results show that the addition of seawater reduces the equilibrium surface tension, foaming ability and adsorption kinetics of SDS/FS-50 mixtures. Among the counterions in seawater, Na + can lower the surface tension and slightly improve the foaming ability, while the presence of Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ and K + allows the formation of surfactant precipitate to weaken the foaming ability of the solution. It turns out that seawater has dual effects on foam stability and the defoaming/stabilizing effects of seawater are related to ionic surfactant concentrations. Besides, it is confirmed that the spontaneous transition from single-lamellar vesicle to rod-like micelle occurs after mixing FS-50 with SDS in the deionized water, while only multi-lamellar vesicles and surfactant crystals can be observed in the seawater. The aggregation behaviour strongly affects solution viscosity as well as foam performance. At high SDS concentrations, the surfactant precipitate/aggregate can inhibit the liquid drainage process and improve foam stability.
