Preparation of high-performance water-based ink from acrylic-modified rosin resin

Zhengquan Zhang,Peng Xiang,Zhiming Zhang,Mingsheng Li,Yanfang Li,Yunfei He,Shaoyun Shan

This study focuses on the preparation of a water-based ink binder using acrylic-modified rosin polyethylene glycol ester (ROPEGE). This binder is characterized by a low acid value (12.23 mg NaOH/g), low viscosity (5.40 mPa s), high fixed content (92.40 %), and excellent printability. Compared to reported water-based inks, the inks derived in this study exhibit higher fixed content (resulting in lower VOC emissions), low acid value (indicating high oxidation resistance), and low viscosity (enhancing print quality). The individual effects of emulsifier type, emulsifier content, initiator type, initiator content, acrylic acid content, and dispersant content are analyzed as single factors. The optimal formulation is achieved by selecting specific components: emulsifier PEG-400 (40 wt%/ROPEGE), initiator potassium persulfate (10 wt%/ROPEGE), functional monomer acrylic acid (10 wt% of ROPEGE), and wetting and dispersing agent OT-75 (10 wt%/ROPEGE). The enhancement of the water-based ink formulation is accomplished through the use of acrylic-modified rosin resin (AMRR) as the binder, dimethyl silicone oil as the defoamer, and malachite green as the pigment.

Effect of TiO2@CaCO3 Waterborne Primer on the Coloring Performance of Inkjet-Printed Wood Product Coatings

Ruijuan Sang,Fei Yang

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is a widely used inorganic filling pigment used in coatings, and it is known for its nontoxicity, odorlessness, and environmental friendliness. The application of CaCO3as a filler can effectively reduce raw material costs, and optimization of the filler formula enhances the coating film performance. In this study, oak planks were prepared as substrates for water-based inkjet printing. Three composite water-based primers with different TiO2-to-CaCO3ratios and a polyurethane resin primer were used to prepare the substrate for the printing surface. The properties of the water-based primer coating and the water-based inkjet printing coating were characterized and analyzed via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, video-based contact angle analysis, and environmental scanning electron microscopy. The aim was to investigate the effects of the composite waterborne primer coatings on the ink absorption and coloring properties of the interface between wood substrates and waterborne inkjet coatings. Sample WDCC-3#, with a TiO2-to-CaCO3ratio of 15:35, exhibited the most comprehensive characteristics. The wood surface coated with 15 g/m2of the polyurethane resin primer and 15 g/m2of WDCC-3#exhibited a 5.8° contact angle of the water-based ink, first-grade adhesion, 4 H hardness, 70.52 whiteness value, and a roughness of ~2.33. The surface of the printed water-based inkjet-coated substrate was uniform and smooth, featuring rounded and transparent edges of the water-based ink droplets and a small CMYK color difference value. Therefore, the composite waterborne primer, incorporating TiO2and CaCO3in specific ratios, can be effectively combined with waterborne polyurethane primer coatings. This combination significantly improves the interfacial compatibility between the oak surface and waterborne inkjet coatings, leading to enhanced ink absorption on the oak plank surface during printing. This results in a high degree of color reproduction and clearer printed images. Overall, this study provides valuable insights for the development of primer programs for the industrial application of waterborne digital inkjet technology on wood products. Keywords:waterborne primer;calcium carbonate;water-based ink;oak plank;inkjet printing technology

Preparation, performance and application of photochromic thermal expansion microcapsules containing spiropyran in water-based ink

Jingjing Ren,Li An,Siqiao Zhang,Ran Mo,Fanghua Pan,Yuwei Hao,Zhiqing Xin,Zhicheng Sun

A novel type of photochromic thermally expandable microcapsules (PTEMs) were prepared through suspension polymerization. The shell material of the microcapsules consisted of acrylonitrile (AN), methyl methacrylate (MMA), and methyl acrylate (MA). The core material utilized n-hexane as a foaming agent containing photochromic dye (spiropyran). On the basis of the preparation, the investigation further focused on the chemical structure, surface morphology, particle size, color-changing ability, and thermal expansion of the microcapsules. Additionally, the PTEMs were used in water-based inks with good compatibility and for screen printing to obtain patterns. Meanwhile, the color changeability of the printed samples was evaluated using a portable colorimeter. Eventually, the results demonstrated that the printed products exhibited excellent color change and thermal expansion capabilities. In future, the PTEMs will have the potential to develop water-based ink applications in anti-counterfeiting and smart packaging.

Accelerated Crystal Growth in >16% Printed MAxFAyCszPbI3 Perovskite Solar Cells from Aqueous Inks

Bing Zhang,Yueyue Xiao,Yuanyi Liu,Xinxin Yu,Zhiliang Ku,Wei Li,Junyan Xiao,Fei Long,Yibing Cheng,Yong Peng

A key to commercializing perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is to use less toxic solvents such as water, alcohol, and other nontoxic compounds when printing them. Improving the perovskite crystal growth rate to reduce defects produced by the Ostwald ripening effect is a critical challenge in fabricating high-quality perovskite films from aqueous inks. In this study, we reported an accelerated crystal growth strategy for printing MAxFAyCszPbI3 perovskite films with aqueous inks. The use of trace amounts of MAI in aqueous inks to generate nanosized PbI2 seeds increased the perovskite formation speed by about 30% and reduced the apparent activation energy of the perovskite forming reaction by about 700 J·mol–1. Consequently, printed PSCs achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.53% and showed an ameliorative stability of 400 h in a dry environment. We proved that high-performance PSCs can be fabricated using aqueous inks, which demonstrated that toxic solvents are not inevitable of fabricating high-performance PSCs.

Anion-π Type Polymeric Nanoparticle Dispersants for Enhancing the Dispersion Stability of Organic Pigments in Water

Na Li,Lulu Li,Chenghua Sun,Dror Fixler,Shizhuo Xiao,Shuyun Zhou

High-performance water-based inkjet inks are critical for advancing inkjet printing technology. The performance of water-based inkjet inks depends largely on the dispersion stability of organic pigments. This imposes higher demands on the performance of polymeric dispersants. However, the relatively weak interaction between polymeric dispersants and organic pigments limits their performance in water-based inkjet inks. Consequently, it is crucial to seek dispersants that exhibit stronger interactions with pigments, alongside high performance, and universality. In this work, five types of polymeric nanoparticles (PNPs) with anion-π groups were synthesized via a simple emulsion polymerization method. Compared to traditional polymeric dispersants, anion-π type PNPs exhibited significant advantages including low viscosity, solvent resistance, and high temperature resistance. Stronger interactions, including salt-bridge hydrogen bondings (H-bonds) and π–π interactions, between these PNPs and different types of organic pigments were demonstrated by FTIR, UV-Vis, and XPS spectral tests. In particular, PNPs-5, bearing -PhSO3−groups, exhibited the strongest interaction with the organic pigments. The water-based inkjet inks, formulated with PNPs-5 serving as a dispersant, exhibited remarkable dispersion stability and outstanding weatherability. This work rationally constructs a strategy for preparing universally applicable polymeric dispersants to enhance the dispersion of pigments in water-based inkjet inks, thereby presenting a broader perspective for applications in the field of inkjet printing.

Aqueous graphene oxide-dispersed carbon nanotubes as inks for the scalable production of all-carbon transparent conductive films

Linxiang He,Sie Chin Tjong

We report the utilization of aqueous graphene oxide (GO)-dispersed multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) as inks for the simple, fast, and industrially scalable fabrication of transparent conductive films (TCFs) on a large scale. The GO–MWNT inks were rod-coated on uniform thin films, which were then chemically reduced by hydroiodic acid (HI) into reduced graphene oxide (rGO)–MWNT TCFs. We show how to utilize GO to make uniform dispersions of MWNTs in water, and how to optimize the wetting and rheological properties of the dispersion for coating and drying without dewetting. Treatment with HI yielded films with good electro-optical performance (sheet resistance of 380 Ω sq−1 at a transparency of 85%). Evaluation of the figure of merit (FoM) indicates that the rGO–MWNT film is superior to rGO, MWNT and un-doped single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) films. The use of the rGO–MWNT film as a transparent heater for defrosters is then demonstrated. Further scientific studies will pave the way for the deployment of GO–MWNT inks in commercial applications.

Hydrophobically Modified Polyacrylamide Incorporating Both Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Units: Enhanced Printability and Stability in Aqueous Ink

Zhi-Rui Liu,Li-Lin Tan,Juan Gao,Zi-Ye Qin,Xin-Xin Huo,Zhi-Min Liang

For this research, three hydrophobically modified polyacrylamides, HPAAB, HPAAF, and HPAAS, with multiple hydrophobic monomers were designed, synthesized, and used as thickeners in aqueous ink for digital ink-jet printing. The structures were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The viscosity–average molecular weight was determined by intrinsic viscosity determination and was adjusted according to hydrophobic content. The critical association concentration (CAC) of polymers was measured simultaneously using the apparent viscosity method and the fluorescence spectrum. The formation of a network structure and the mechanism of hydrophobic association are visualized dynamically with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) at different concentrations. Under the same conditions, HPAAB exhibited excellent thickening ability across different pH levels, temperatures, and shear rates, which is caused by the longer hydrophobic side chain and the stronger hydrophobic effect of the behenyl polyoxyethylene ether methacrylate (BEM) group. Furthermore, an aqueous ink using HPAAB as a thickener displays significant printability and stability, functioning much better than a corresponding aqueous ink that uses a commercial thickener. This is the first example of a hydrophobic associating polyacrylamide, incorporating both hydrophilic and hydrophobic units within a single hydrophobic chain, thereby serving as an efficient thickener for aqueous ink.
