Ultra-highly efficient enrichment of uranium from seawater via studtite nanodots growth-elution cycle

Gao Peng,Hu Yezi,Shen Zewen,Zhao Guixia,Cai Ruiqing,Chu Feng,Ji Zhuoyu,Wang Xiangke,Huang Xiubing

Consecutive uranium extraction from seawater is a promising approach to secure the long-term supply of uranium and the sustainability of nuclear energy. Here, we report an ultra-highly efficient strategy via studtite nanodots growth with impressive uranyl uptake capacity of ~ 154.50 mg/g from natural seawater in 12 consecutive days (i.e., average for ~ 12.875 mg/g/day). Uranyl can be extracted as studtite under visible light via the reaction between the adsorbed uranyl and the photogenerated H 2 O 2 with imine-based Covalent-Organic Framework photocatalysts. In detail, over Tp-Bpy, Tp-Bpy-2 and Tp-Py with multiple uranyl chelating sites, uranyl is found extracted as studtite nanodots which can be eluted readily, while over Tp-Bd and Tb-Bpy, uranyl is transformed into studtite nanorods that is more inert for elution. Abundant chelating sites of uranyl via structural regulation of COF photocatalysts are proved to facilitate the formation and efficient elution of studtite nanodots.

Comparative Chemical Profiles of Essential Oils and Hydrolate Extracts from Fresh Flowers of Eight Paeonia suffruticosa Andr. Cultivars from Central China

Gaoming Lei,Jie Li,Tao Zheng,Junqiao Yao,Jingjing Chen,Lengxin Duan

Paeonia suffruticosaAndr. is a famous ornamental and aromatic plant with hundreds of cultivars in China. The objective of this work was to investigate comparative chemical profiles of essential oils and hydrolate extracts from eightP. suffruticosaAndr. cultivars from Central China. The percentages of hydrocarbons in hydrolate extracts (≤1.1%) were significantly lower than those in the essential oils (29.8–63.7%). The percentages of oxygenated compounds in hydrolate extracts (98.3–99.8%) were significantly higher than those in the essential oils (34.8–69.6%). Multivariate analyses with hierarchical clusters and principal components further indicated the chemical differences between essential oils and hydrolate extracts. Due to predominance of oxygenated compounds and almost trace level of hydrocarbons,P. suffruticosaAndr. hydrolate extracts could be good alternatives to the essential oils. Moreover, distribution of major oxygenated compounds in hydrolate extracts varied with cultivars. Hydrolate extracts from ’SHT’, ’WLPS’ and ’BXT’ presented chemotypes of methylated phenols (65.0%), 2-phenylethanol (64.4%) and geraniol + citronellol + nerol (59.9%), respectively. Those from five other cultivars presented somewhat mixed chemotypes. These results were further confirmed by quantitative evaluation relative to the major oxygenated compounds. The outcome of this work will promote applications ofP. suffruticosaAndr. hydrolate extracts in fragrances and cosmetics. Keywords:Paeonia suffruticosaAndr.;essential oil;hydrolate extract;chemical profile;GC-MS;GC-FID

Effective and selective extraction of uranium from seawater by diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana

Liu Nana,Xu Yunan,Zhan Chenghua,Li Yahe,Yuan Yijun

Uranium extraction from seawater is urgently required for the sustainable development of nuclear industry. Herein, the application potential of Thalassiosira pseudonana adsorbing U(VI) was examined. A 0.3 g L −1 adsorbent dose at an initial uranium concentration of 8 ppm, pH 5.0, and a contact time of 8 h achieved maximum U(VI) adsorption (23.75 mg g −1 ) at 298 K. The adsorption process was a chemisorption phenomenon, characterized by homogeneous monolayer adsorption. The adsorbents exhibited high hydrophilicity, with –OH and –COOH being the main functional groups for uranium adsorption. T. pseudonana had excellent regeneration performance and high sorption selectivity. The research denoted T. pseudonana is an effective and promising sorbent for extracting uranium from seawater.

Aqueous extract of Rabdosia rubescens leaves: forming nanoparticles, targeting P-selectin, and inhibiting thrombosis

Yuji Wang,Jingcheng Tang,Haimei Zhu,Xueyun Jiang,Jiawang Liu,Wenyun Xu,Haiping Ma,Qiqi Feng,Jianhui Wu,Ming Zhao,Shiqi Peng

The hot water extract of Rabdosia rubescens was traditionally used as an antithrombotic medicine. To explore its antithrombotic utility and mechanism, we carried out a series of in vitro and in vivo assays in this study. In vitro platelet aggregation assay showed that the half maximal inhibitory concentration values of aqueous extract of R. rubescens leaves (AERL) inhibiting platelet aggregation induced by thrombin, arachidonic acid, adenosine diphosphate, and platelet-activating factor ranged from 0.12 mg/mL to 1.43 mg/mL. The minimal effective oral dose of AERL inhibiting the rats from forming thrombus was 25 mg/kg. Both in vitro and in vivo actions were correlated with AERL concentration-dependently inhibiting sP-selectin release. In water, AERL formed nanoparticles, and their size depended on the concentration. Docking the five nucleotides, 21 phenolic acids, and four diterpenoids identified by high-performance liquid chromatography–photodiode array detector/(−)electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry analysis into the active site of P-selectin, rosmarinic acid was predicted to be the antithrombotic ingredient of AERL. In flow cytometry analysis, 1 μM of rosmarinic acid effectively inhibited sP-selectin release in arachidonic acid-activated platelets. In a rat model, 5 mg/kg of oral rosmarinic acid effectively inhibited thrombosis.

Comparative study between cold and hot water extracted polysaccharides from Plantago ovata seed husk by using rheological methods

Peiyuan Zhou,Mohamed Eid,Wenfei Xiong,Cong Ren,Tingyang Ai,Ziyu Deng,Jing Li,Bin Li

Cold and hot water extracted polysaccharides (CP and HP) were isolated from Plantago ovata seed husk at 25 and 85 °C, respectively. Their rheological properties were systematically investigated and compared. Different concentrations and temperatures were studied to evaluate the viscoelastic properties of the two fractions. It was found that CP solutions behaved as viscous fluids, while HP solutions preferred to exhibit as gel-like structure. The sol-gel transition process of HP was evaluated and the gel point was determined to be 4.8 mg/mL by Winter-Chambon method in water at 25 °C. The steady flow sweep investigated the viscosity properties of CP solutions and two critical concentrations were found, which locating the transition from the dilute to semi-dilute region, and from the semi-dilute to concentrated region. In addition, the two fractions could form thermo-reversible weak gels, and the gelation temperatures of them increased with the increase of concentration. It is evident that both polysaccharides have significant potential for application in food industry.

Investigation on the Inhibitory Effect of Bergenia purpurascens Water Extract on COVID-19 XBB1.5 Variant and Its Blocking ACE2 Mechanism

Yongxia Shi,Xiaoning Sun,Zhaoxia Yu,Dalan Dai,Hongyu Guo,Lijuan Mei,Jun Dai,Lei Jiang

ObjectiveBergenia purpurascens, a medicinal herb indigenous to southwestern China, has garnered interest for its potential therapeutic properties. This study investigates the herb's water extract's capacity to interfere with the interaction between the COVID-19 S1 Receptor Binding Domain (RBD) and the ACE2 receptor, a critical step in the virus's infection process.MethodsQuality standards for the Bergenia purpurascens extract were established to ensure consistency. The extract's efficacy was assessed using a Vero-E6 cell infection model to inhibit live virus infection of the COVID-19 XBB1.5 variant. Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) was employed to explore the mechanism of action. The extract's composition was further analyzed using Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS), with active compounds identified through a combination of in silico screening and actual activity testing.ResultsThe water extract of Bergenia purpurascens demonstrated significant inhibitory activity against the COVID-19 XBB1.5 variant, with stability and high potency, reflected by an IC50 value of 0.037 mg/mL. The selectivity index for the antiviral effect is approximately 9. The extract's composition was predominantly Phenylpropanoids and Carbohydrates, accounting for over 60% of the total. Interestingly, a majority of the high-content compounds were inactive, while the low-content compounds, exemplified by Ellagic acid, showed synergistic activity. The extract's inhibitory mechanism was characterized as a non-specific inhibition of ACE2 with a steady-state binding affinity (KD) of 7.9 × 10−7 M.ConclusionsThe study concludes that the water extract of Bergenia purpurascens is a promising, cost-effective non-specific ACE2 inhibitor with potential applications in COVID-19 therapy. The identification of active compounds and the elucidation of its inhibitory mechanism provide a foundation for further research and development of this traditional medicinal herb in combating viral infections.

The effects of aqueous extract of Labisia Pumila (Blume) Fern.-Vill. Var. Alata on wound contraction, hydroxyproline content and histological assessments in superficial partial thickness of second-degree burn model

Ibrahim Nurul ‘Izzah,Mohamed Isa Naina,Mohamed Norazlina,Mohd Ramli Elvy Suhana,Shuid Ahmad Nazrun

Background: Burns are considered a critical care problem in emergency medicine, resulting in physical, psychological, and chronic disabilities. Silver sulfadiazine is the gold standard in topical burn treatment but was associated with toxicity to keratinocytes and fibroblasts, which may delay wound healing. In discovering potential alternative treatments for burn wound healing, this study was performed to determine the effect of Labisia Pumila (Blume) Fern.-Vill. Var. Alata (LPVa) extract on thermal-burn wounds in rats. Methods: A total of 50 Sprague-Dawley male rats were categorized into five groups. There were three control groups; normal control (left untreated), negative control (given ointment base) and positive control (given silver sulfadiazine). Meanwhile, the two intervention groups were given with 2% LPVa leaf and root extracts, respectively. Burn wounds were inflicted on the loin region of the rat by applying a heated steel rod at 80°C for 10 s. On days 3, 7, 14, and 21, wounds were measured macroscopically using a digital calliper and one animals of each group were sacrificed, and the wounded skin were excised for histomorphological assessments. The wounds were excised for hydroxyproline content on Day 14 of treatment.Result: For wound contraction percentage, both the leaf and root extracts of LPVa showed a significant reduction in burn wound size on Day 7 onwards, when compared to other groups. For hydroxyproline content, only the leaf extract of LPVa produced significantly higher content compared to both negative and normal control groups. In terms of histological examination, the leaf extract group demonstrated a superior healing effect than the root extract group. Conclusion: Both leaf and root extracts of LPVa could promote wound healing in the thermal-burn wound rat model, with leaf extract being superior to root extract.

Fractionation of pyrolysis oil derived from lignin through a simple water extraction method

Xiaohua Zhang,Hao Ma,Shubin Wu,Weikun Jiang,Weiqi Wei,Ming Lei

Great effort has been exerted to develop better, more effective fractionation techniques and improve the quality of bio-oil. Water extraction can be regarded as an effective method for bio-oil fractionation. In this study, fractionation of pyrolysis oil into water-soluble (WS) and water-insoluble (WI) phases by water extraction was investigated, and the influence of several factors, including water-to-oil ratio and water temperature, on the performance of the method were evaluated via several analytical techniques. When the water-to-oil ratio was 20:1 and the extraction temperature was 20 °C, polar and non-polar components were enriched in the WS (36.56 wt%) and WI (63.44 wt%) phases, respectively. Although extraction temperature had no significant effect on the properties of WS and WI, the distribution of polar and non-polar components was markedly affected by the dispersion and polarity of the compounds. 2D HSQC-NMR results revealed that side chain structures were more sensitive than aromatic structures to temperature. In view of these findings, an effective energy- and resource-saving extraction method featuring a water-to-oil ratio of 20:1 and extraction temperature of 20 °C is recommended for optimal water fractionation of pyrolysis oil.

Phase equilibrium and mechanism analysis of trioxane in wastewater extraction by hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent

Yusen Chen,Jie Li,Chunshan Li,Yinglong Wang,Jianguang Qi,Zhaoyou Zhu

Trioxane (Tox) is an important source of anhydrous formaldehyde, which is used in large quantities in industrial production resulting in large quantities of low concentration Tox wastewater. Liquid-liquid extraction is one of the commonly used methods for wastewater resource recycling. This study presents a method on the separation of Tox from wastewater using hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (HDES). Firstly, Thy-BA and Thy-DA were screened from 12 HDES by extraction performance and solubility in water. The effects of different molar ratios of HDES, extraction temperature and addition of acetic acid as impurity on the extraction performance were further investigated. For the measured ternary phase data of HDES-Tox-water, the reliability of the data was verified using the Othmer-Tobias and Hand equations, and the data were fitted using the NRTL model. Quantum chemistry was used to calculate the interaction energy of HDES with Tox and to establish a correlation with the extraction efficiency. Hydrogen bonding was found to be the main force for separating Tox by electrostatic potential and interaction region indicator analysis. Molecular dynamics computing found that Thy was a substance that plays a major role in Thy-BA and Thy-DA. Ultimately, it was discovered that the chosen HDES has great recycling and thermal stability characteristics. This work explores three aspects of phase equilibrium, thermodynamics and microscopic separation mechanism revelation to support the systematic recovery of Tox wastewater.

Licorice Water Extract Improves Constipation by Repairing the Intestinal Barrier and Regulating the Gut Microbiota: A Potential Alternative Treatment Strategy

Mingwei Sun,Meng Zhao,Linlin Du,Jieying Hou,Juane Dong,Bin Zhang

Constipation is a prevalent intestinal disorder that significantly diminishes patients' quality of life and predisposes them to various serious health conditions. Current therapeutic approaches for constipation frequently result in drug dependence and adverse effects. In this study, we present evidence that licorice water extract (LWE), a naturally derived compound from Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch, effectively ameliorates constipation in mice induced by diphenoxylate (DIP). Our findings indicate that oral administration of LWE (82 mg/kg/d) substantially reduces defecation time, enhances intestinal motility, and increases fecal water content in constipated mice. Furthermore, LWE elevates the levels of excitatory neurotransmitters such as serotonin (5-HT) and motilin (MTL), while concurrently decreasing the levels of inhibitory neurotransmitters including vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), nitric oxide (NO) as well as Lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Mechanistically, compared to the model control group, the LWE treatment upregulates the expression of ZO-1, Occludin , and MUC2 genes; repairs DIP-induced damage to the intestinal barrier; increases aquaporin 3 ( AQP3 ) protein expression; downregulates Toll-like receptor 4 ( TLR4 ); mitigates low-grade intestinal inflammation; and restores colonic goblet cell populations. Additionally, LWE is metabolized by gut microbiota, thereby restoring dysbiosis associated with DIP-induced constipation. In conclusion, our results suggest that LWE alleviates constipation through mechanisms involving intestinal barrier repair and gut microbiota modulation, highlighting its potential as an alternative therapeutic option for this condition. In response to this, we have developed a convenient gel-type candy (LWEI) with licorice extract and inulin as the main ingredients, which has shown good efficacy in relieving constipation.

Optimization of ultrasonic extraction of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides using response surface methodology

Jitian Song,Shi Dongqi,Su Hang,Feng Yongxia,Tian Wei

Ultrasonic extraction was a new development method to achieve high-efficiency extraction of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides instead of hot water extraction. In this paper, the single factor method combined with the box Behnken design of response surface method was used to study the influence of extraction time, extraction temperature, material liquid ratio and ultrasonic power on the extraction rate of L . barbarum polysaccharide. The results indicated that the best extraction rate of L . barbarum polysaccharide was 12.54 ± 0.12% under the conditions of 80 min for extraction time, 73 °C for extraction temperature, 1 g:38 mL for material to liquid ratio, and 185 W for ultrasonic power. Under the same operating conditions, the yield of L . barbarum polysaccharide using ultrasonic extraction was 83.3%, which was higher than that hot water extraction. Moreover, the extraction time of ultrasonic extraction was only 47% of that using hot water extraction. This suggested that there was great potentials of using ultrasonic extraction in the realization of high-efficiency extraction of L. barbarum polysaccharide. The results of this study could also provide a theoretical basis for the coupling of ultrasonic extraction and ultrasonic concentration process to develop the integrated equipment of both ultrasonic extraction and ultrasonic concentration.

Construction of a phosphonate-based hydrogen-bonded organic framework for efficient extraction of uranium from seawater

Cuicui Shao,Kai Tuo,Weifeng Hou,Chuyao Liang,Yi Li,Yuxin Sun,Wei Xu,Shuyang Cao,Zhijian Li,Shouzhi Pu,Chunhui Deng

Extraction of uranium represents one of the valuable but challenging processes in the fields of resource recycling and environmental protection. Here, a low-cost and efficient phosphate-based hydrogen-bond organic framework (P-HOF) was designed for the adsorption of uranium with abundant phosphate groups on its surface, exhibiting superior removal performance (Q m = 1066.0 mg g −1 ) for uranium. It had high selectivity and good recyclability for U(VI) in simulated seawater, and after five adsorption-desorption cycles, the adsorption capacity of uranium decreased slightly, but it can still be maintained at more than 80 %. Impressively, P-HOF demonstrated excellent uranium removal capabilities across a wide pH range, with removal rates exceeding 70 % even under acidic conditions (pH = 1), and the P-HOF adsorbed 7.58 mg g −1 of uranium from natural seawater under 13 days. This work indicates that the phosphonate-based P-HOF could be utilized as a promising adsorbent for the effective removal of uranium from seawater.
