The mechanism underlying the ability of rice to germinate underwater is a largely enigmatic but key research question highly relevant to rice cultivation. Moreover, although rice is known to accumulate salicylic acid (SA), SA biosynthesis is poorly defined, and its role in underwater germination is unknown. It is also unclear whether peroxisomes, organelles essential to oilseed germination and rice SA accumulation, play a role in rice germination. Here, we show that submerged imbibition of rice seeds induces SA accumulation to promote germination in submergence. Two submergence-induced peroxisomal Oryza sativa cinnamate:CoA ligases (OsCNLs) are required for this SA accumulation. SA exerts this germination-promoting function by inducing indole-acetic acid (IAA) catabolism through the IAA-amino acid conjugating enzyme GH3. The metabolic cascade we identified may potentially be adopted in agriculture to improve the underwater germination of submergence-intolerant rice varieties. SA pretreatment is also a promising strategy to improve submerged rice germination in the field.

Essential oils (EOs) are naturally occurring substances that have shown great prospect in the field of antimicrobial, antioxidant and pest control by nontoxic mechanisms. In this regard, EOs are considered the promising and eco-friendly approach for controlling harmful algae. In this study, the anti-cyanobacterial activity of EOs eugenol against Microcystis aeruginosa are evaluated from the perspective of photosynthetic efficiency, the behavior of extracellular organic matter (EOM), endogenous plant hormone synthesis, and nitric oxide signaling pathway. Results showed that the photosynthetic activity of M. aeruginosa decreased significantly after eugenol treatments. Eugenol treatment resulted in cells rupture and the release of EOM. Levels of endogenous plant hormones salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) were enhanced separately by 2.32 and 2.01 times after 4 d of exposure to eugenol. And the inhibition of SA and JA biosynthesis further promotes the inhibitory effects of eugenol on algae. Additionally, the signaling molecule nitric oxide (NO) increased significantly by 3.78-fold. Furthermore, the influence of NO on microalgae exposed to eugenol was also determined, suggesting that the inhibitory effect of eugenol stress might be associated with NO generation in M. aeruginosa . These findings will be helpful for the understanding of the fate and potential of eugenol in harmful algae control.

The excessive use of non-renewable formulations, low utilization efficiency, and eco-unfriendly behavior are serious disadvantages of traditional pesticide formulations. Herein, a scalable and sustainable biopolymer-based core–shell (CS) nanocarrier loaded with an anti-viral candidate agent, Bingqingxiao (BQX), was investigated for plant disease management. Preliminary [email protected] @SWP nanoparticles ( [email protected] @S NPs) were manufactured through the noncovalent self-assembly of pyridine-grafted poly (hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PyPHEMA) and natural soy whey protein (SWP), and exhibited a stable spherical morphology with a diameter of approximately 130 nm. Notably, encapsulation of BQX into the NPs increased the ultra-violet (UV) resistance of the compound by 8.7-fold, and the nanocarrier [email protected] ( [email protected] ) enhanced the BQX foliar surface wettability, resulting in a slow, urea-responsive release. In vivo studies revealed that the protective activity of [email protected] @S NPs was 1.4-fold higher than that of BQX against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), and the antiviral efficiency was further improved by stimulation with 0.2 M urea. Furthermore, foliar application of [email protected] @S NPs activated host plant defense responses by upregulating the expression of salicylic acid (SA)- and abscisic acid (ABA)-related genes. Interestingly, the developed [email protected] @S NPs act as plant nutrition to enhance the crop fresh and dry weight by 24.7% and 19.9%, respectively. Consequently, [email protected] is a promising biocompatible carrier that can enhance the potency of various pesticides, synergistically improve plant disease resistance, and simultaneously act as a fertilizer for crop growth.

Litsea cubeba essential oil (LCO) has a wide range of industrial uses. This study found that LCO has significant anti-TMV activity and that its active components are monoterpenoids. Citral , the main active component of the oil, showed outstanding anti-TMV activity. The protective, inactive, and curative efficacies of citral (500 μg/mL) against TMV were 76.27%, 55.14%, and 50.42%, respectively, which were significantly better than those of the positive control agent, chitosan oligosaccharide . Citral showed no direct effect on TMV particles but did induce hypersensitive response (HR). Bioassay results showed that citral induced significant plant disease resistance activity (68.20% at a concentration of 500 μg/mL). The results of physiological and biochemical experiments showed that citral induced the overexpression of defense enzymes such as SOD , CAT , POD , and PAL in tobacco (which increased by 5.3, 1.9, 3.0, and 4.0 times at a concentration of 500 μg/mL, respectively) as well as induced the overexpression of PR proteins, including NPR1 , PR1 , PR2 , and PR5 (which increased by 23.49, 39.27, 34.47, and 52.07 times at a concentration of 500 μg/mL, respectively). These results suggest that citral could induce systemic acquired resistance (SAR) in tobacco. Further mechanism studies conducted suggest that citral induces the overexpression of genes related to salicylic acid (SA) biosynthesis, including PAL , ICS , and PBS3 (50.74, 30.41, and 31.95 times higher than the control at a concentration of 500 μg/mL, respectively) and the accumulation of SA (5.1 times higher than the control at a concentration of 500 μg/mL). These results suggest that citral activates SAR through the SA pathway. The control efficacies induced by citral (500 μg/mL) on Erysiphe cucurbitacearum , Botrytis cinerea , and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum reached 67.39%, 59.61%, and 63.81%, respectively, indicating that citral can induce plant resistance against fungal diseases. The induced plant disease resistance activity of citral is prominent, with a long duration and a broad spectrum, performing better than the commercial agent chitosan oligosaccharide. Citral thus has the potential to be developed into a new botanical-derived anti-virus agent and plant immunity activator.
