In the present work, a novel composite CCF@UiO-66-NH 2 @TpBD (CCF stands for carboxyl cotton fiber) was fabricated for the extraction and removal of BPs from aqueous samples. Both the UiO-66-NH 2 (MOF) and TpBD (COF) were immobilized on CCF through feasible layer-by-layer and Schiff base reaction, and characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. The CCF@UiO-66-NH 2 @TpBD was packed in pipette tip as micro-column to investigate the adsorption of BPs using a pipette tip solid-phase extraction (PT-SPE) method. Various parameters (sampling flow rate, sample pH, amount of adsorbent, ionic strength, methanol concentration, and flow rate of eluent) affecting the extraction efficiency were optimized. Based on strong π-π conjugation, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions, the adsorbent exhibited good extraction and removal capability. A low limit of detection (0.16–0.75 ng/mL) and a high adsorption (4.3–5.6 mg/g) were obtained. Accordingly, the composite CCF@UiO-66-NH 2 @TpBD material was shown to be a suitable adsorbent for the extraction and removal of BPs from aquatic samples due to excellent reusability, reproducibility, and high adsorption capacity.

Exploring commercial and inexpensive sorbents for extraction of organic pollutants is still an active area of research. Ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene sieve plate (UMPESP) is a commercially available, low-cost, and porous frit, which has been widely used in solid-phase extraction cartridges to fix the filling materials. In this work, UMPESP was investigated for the extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from water samples. The desorption and sorption efficiencies of UMPESP were first evaluated and compared with two previously reported sorbents, low-density polyethylene plastic pellet (LDPEP) and silicone rod (SR). The comparative results showed that quantitative desorption of analytes from UMPESP, which could be easily achieved with 2 × 1.5 mL n -hexane, was more effective than that of LDPEP (>6 × 1.5 mL n -hexane) and comparable to that of SR. Additionally, shorter equilibrium time was rendered by UMPESP (shaking for 120 min) compared with SR (>480 min), due to the porous structure and larger surface area of the former. Different parameters that affect the extraction efficiency, including organic modifier, ionic strength, and pH value, were then studied. The optimized method coupled with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry afforded good linearity in a concentration range of 10–5000 ng L −1 (except acenaphthene in the range of 25–5000 ng L −1 ) with coefficients of determination ranging from 0.9957 to 0.9995 and relative standard deviations below 13.8%. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.04–3.35 ng L −1 and 0.13–11.16 ng L −1 , respectively. Finally, the method was successfully applied to determine PAHs in real water samples, and the results showed no statistically significant difference with the concentrations derived from liquid–liquid extraction. Hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP)-induced coacervation in aqueous mixed systems of catanionic surfactants of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was described in detail, and its application in the extraction of strongly polar sulfonamides (SAs) was investigated. With 10 % ( v / v ) HFIP inclusion, coacervation formation and two-phase separation occur in a wide range of SDS/DTAB mole ratios (88:12∼0:100 mol/mol) and total surfactant concentrations (10∼200 mmol/L). The interactions between HFIP and DTAB play an important role in coacervation formation. The HFIP-induced SDS–DTAB coacervation extraction proves to be an efficient method for the extraction and preconcentration of SAs. Both hydrophobic interaction and polar interactions (hydrogen–bond, electrostatic, and π-cation) contribute to the distribution of SAs into coacervate phase. The proposed HFIP-induced SDS–DTAB coacervation extraction combined with HPLC–UV was employed for the extraction and quantitative determination of SAs in environmental water samples. Limits of detection were 1.4∼2.5 ng mL −1 . Excellent linearity with correlation coefficients from 0.9990 to 0.9995 was obtained in the concentration of 0.01∼10 μg mL −1 . Relative recoveries were in the range of 93.4∼105.9 % for analysis of the lake, underground, and tap water samples spiked with SAs at 0.01, 1.0, and 10 μg/mL, respectively. Relative standard deviations were 0.7∼3.2 % for intraday precision and 1.3∼4.6 % for interday precision ( n = 3). Concentration factors were 17∼49 for three water samples spiked with 0.01 μg/mL SAs. The results demonstrate that the proposed extraction method is feasible for the preconcentration and determination of trace SAs in real water samples.

In current study, a rapid and sensitive method for simultaneous determination of 8 phenoxy carboxylic acid (PCA) herbicides in environmental water samples was established based on an octyl and amino functionalized magnetic mesoporous silica (mOAS). The mOAS sorbent was fabricated by simple modification of octyl and aminopropyl groups onto the surface of magnetic mesoporous silica. Various techniques were employed to characterize the physical and chemical properties of the mOAS sorbent. The mOAS sorbent showed good extraction capacity and selectivity for PCA herbicides owing to the mixed-mode hydrophobic and ionic exchange interaction mechanisms. Then a one-factor-at-a-time approach was utilized for the optimization of extraction, washing and eluting conditions. Under the optimum conditions, wide linearity ranges with squared correlation coefficients ranging from 0.9888 to 0.9966 were obtained, and the method detection of limits (LODs) were in the range of 0.005–0.02 ng/mL. Furthermore, recoveries ranged from 86.9 to 114.6% with intra- and inter-day relative standard deviation (RSD) of 0.8–11.0% at three concentration levels spiked in blank water sample. Finally, the as-proposed method was successfully applied to extract 8 PCA herbicides in real water samples followed by determination with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). Results showed that the mOAS as adsorbent for magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) of acidic herbicides is an efficient alternative with simplicity and rapidity.

The authors describe an efficient method for the extraction of tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) from water samples by using a new kind of core-shell adsorbent. It consists of a magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) core and a metal-organic framework (type ZIF-8) as the shell. The sorbent has a large specific surface and superparamagnetic response. The sorbent was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption, and X-ray diffraction. The adsorption isotherms, dynamic adsorption, and mechanisms of interactions between tetracycline and sorbent were studied. Various parameters affecting the extraction efficiency were optimized. Following desorption of the TCs with methanol (containing 1% of acetic acid), they were quantified by using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography combined with mass spectrometry. The method has a linear range that extends from 0.5 to 50 ng·L −1 , and the limits of detection for tetracycline, chlortetracycline, and oxytetracycline are 0.125, 0.122 and 0.143 ng·L −1 , respectively. The relative standard deviations of intra-day and inter-day assays range from 3.3% to 8.5%, and from 2.8% to 8.3%, respectively. The recoveries of TCs (at spiking levels of 0.5, 5.0 and 50 ng·L −1 ) are in the range between 78.3% and 93.7%. The method was successfully applied to the determination of TCs in spiked river water, fish pond water, and livestock wastewater.
