Water waves are viable low-carbon and renewable sources of power that can be optionally combined with triboelectric nanogeneration (TENG). Herein, we report on the synthesis of a TENG device based on green wrinkled paper tribolayers (W-TENG) assembled in grids (G-TENG) with channels that enable contact-separation modes involving metal balls that roll in phase with the waves. The paper's wrinkle wavelength and amplitude were adjusted by using a crepe blade at a given angle with respect to a drying cylinder, as well as the speed and torque. Polar hierarchical superhydrophobic cellulose micro/nanostructures, proposed as positive tribolayers with enhanced contact area and triboelectric density. The negative (biodegradable) tribolayers were prepared by electrospinning aqueous suspensions of polyvinyl alcohol and poly (ethylene oxide) reinforced with cellulose nanofibers. The charge transfer by the W-TENG reached up to 40 nC in air and retained 27 nC under 85 % relative humidity, ~5 and 7 times higher than those measured in planar TENG counterparts. A G-TENG array charging time (100-μF capacitor) of ~188 s was measured when the voltage of the capacitor raised to ~1.5 V. Overall, we introduce a new, scalable TENG system that is demonstrated for its remarkable ability to harvest blue energy.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have become a promising energy harvesting technology due to robustness, low cost and scalability. In this work, a novel oscillating water energy harvesting device (OS-TENG) inspired by the accordion structure is reported. The triboelectric material with interlayer structure is constructed by electrospinning technology, and the spatial efficiency of device is enhanced by stacking U-sheet structure and array accordion-like power module, enabling the conversion of mechanical energy into electrical energy. At the same time, the operational mechanism of device is comprehensively analyzed, and the parameters such as the angle of elastomer are systematically optimized. Under a condition of 3 Hz, the OS-TENG achieves a current output of 70 μA and a power density of 124 mW/m², while maintaining exceptional electrical output stability over a period of 10 days. Owing to superior performance, the OS-TENG is capable of powering LED lights, thermometers and wireless signal transmission systems. More importantly, it is also applicable to electrochemical processes including water electrolysis for hydrogen production and cathodic protection of metals, the potential of 304SS is decreased 250 mV, which shows obvious corrosion protection effect. This work provides a promising approach for large-scale water wave energy harvesting and self-driven electrochemistry without external power sources.

Wave energy collector (WEC) based on triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) (W-TENG) is excellent candidate in complex marine environments. However, the improvement of energy conversion efficiency and understanding of motion mechanisms of W-TENG were limited due to the lack of theoretical basis. Here, based on the theory of hydromechanics, an energy conversion model is proposed to unveil the energy conversion mechanism and interaction mechanism between W-TENG (solid) and water wave (liquid) during the wave energy harvesting process. An inverted pendulum-typed multilayer triboelectric nanogenerator (IPM-TENG) is developed to capture water wave energy in weak wave environment (wave height: 2–13 cm, wave frequency: 0.5–1.25 Hz). Guided by the theoretical model and hydrodynamic experiments, the structural parameters and output performance of the device are further optimized. Most importantly, the available energy conversion efficiency of the optimized device is up to 14.5%. Furthermore, the optimized IPM-TENG can serve as a console for the ‘on demand’ release of pesticides to promote the development of self-powered smart agriculture. This work can not only provide guidance for the design and energy conversion efficiency improvement of future blue energy harvesting devices, but also accelerate the commercial rollout and practical application of W-TENG.

Water is an important resource for building different energy systems towards diversified applications. In this paper, a novel hybrid nanogenerator is proposed based on a water-wave triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) and evaporation generator, which opens up a more effective approach to fully utilize the energy from water. This hybrid nanogenerator can solve the problem of insufficient output of water wave TENGs in calm water. The optimized peak power of water-wave TENG can reach 0.62 mW under simulated waves frequency of 2.5 Hz, while a capacitor of 0.33 µF can be charged to 15 V by TENG within 80 s in actual water waves. The evaporation generator based on wood block can continuously generate direct currents during the spontaneous evaporation of water. The solar-vapor conversion efficiency of evaporation generator can reach 84.2%, while the evaporation generator can provide a maximum current density of 3.2 μA·cm −2 and a maximum output power density of 1.4 mW·m −2 with a matching load of 10 kΩ (23 ℃, 30% RH). To demonstrate the application capability of the evaporation generator, we design a multi-stage boost circuit coupled with the pulse charging method, which can increase the voltage output and effectively reduce the charging time. The proposed hybrid nanogenerator provides a promising way for collecting both water wave and steam evaporation energy, effectively broadening methods for energy harvesting by TENGs.
