This study examined the effect of glycerol used as a co-solvent on yields of bio-oil derived from rice straw through hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL). The reaction was conducted in a high-pressure batch reactor with different volume ratios of glycerol to water. The quality of the derived bio-oil was analyzed in terms of its elemental composition, heating value, water content, ash content, and acid number. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry were conducted to analyze the chemical composition of the derived bio-oils. The following optimal conditions were obtained: 1:1 vol ratio of glycerol to water with 5 wt% of Na 2 CO 3 at 260 °C for 1 h. Under these conditions, 50.31 wt% of bio-oil and 26.65 wt% of solid residue were produced. Therefore, glycerol can be used as a co-solvent in HTL of rice straw at moderate temperatures to obtain bio-oil with high yield and quality.

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of microalgae for bio-oil production is a promising strategy to avoid extensive fossil fuel utilization, while tandem amidation and Maillard reactions during hydrolysis of cellular compounds unavoidably result in formation of nitrogen containing (N-containing) compounds, reducing quality of bio-oil. Accordingly, VO 4 3− intercalated Cu–Fe layered double oxides named as Cu 2 Fe-VO 4 -LDO is firstly synthesized to both catalyze hydrolysis of cellular compounds and block N-containing compounds formation. The results indicate Cu 2 Fe-VO 4 -LDO can improve bio-oil yield from 19.32 to 20.32 wt%, with decrease of N/C ratio from 0.70 of control to 0.67 of experimental group, and increase of H/C ratio from 0.129 to 0.132. The insert of VO 4 3− provides more strong-acid sites, which are beneficial to hydrolysis of cellular compounds. Meanwhile, more strong-base sites of Cu 2 Fe-VO 4 -LDO promote decarboxylation of fatty acids and removing amino-group of amino acids, subsequently improve production of alkanes. Furthermore, the reversible oxidation of VO 4 3− promotes oxidation of reducing sugars, blocking tandem amidation and Maillard reaction between intermedia of hydrolyzed lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins. This work reports a methodology for synthesis of Cu 2 Fe-VO 4 -LDO with strong acid-base sites and reversible oxidize interlayer sites, providing a strategy to simultaneously improve bio-oil yield and reduce its N/C ratio.

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is one of the most promising technologies for conversion of microalgae, and catalysts with high hydrothermal stability are required for controllable HTL. In this article, SBA-15 incorporated with transition metals (Ni, Pd, Co and Ru) were synthetized via double-template method for catalytic HTL of microalgae. The results showed that metal incorporated SBA-15 represented high hydrothermal stability at 613 K. The incorporated Ni, Co and Ru was dispersed in SBA-15 enhancing the hydrothermal stability. The catalysts greatly influenced the chemical composition of the obtained bio-oil, which contained a higher percentage of furfural derivatives and a lower content of fatty acids and N-containing compounds, thus bio-oil quality was improved significantly. Higher hydrothermal stability and specific surface areas of Co-SBA-15 contribute to the highest preformation with 78.78% conversion and 24.11 wt% bio-oil yield. Metal incorporated SBA-15 provides a potential application for biomass conversion in high-temperature aqueous phase.

In this study, rice straw as an abundant agricultural waste was subjected to hydrothermal liquefaction for production of bio oil . The series of batch experiments were conducted at different temperatures (200 °C, 230 °C, 260 °C, 280 °C and 300 °C) for reaction time of 120 min with and without NiO nanocatalyst. The resulting bio-oil was categorized into light and heavy oils (LO and HO). In presence of nanocatalyst, the yields of LO and HO were maximized up to 13.2% and 17.2% at 300 °C, respectively. The carbon recovery of bio oil was significantly improved to 52.8% with 46.6% energy recovery in catalyzed reaction. Typical H/C and O/C atomic ratio of catalyzed HO are 1.2 and 0.3 respectively. The highest calorific values of LO and HO are 24.9 MJkg −1 and 31.9 MJkg −1 respectively. The tested nanocatalyst increased the yield of bio oil, but could not incite the elemental compositions and heating values of bio oil. The valuable chemical compounds in bio-oil had been analyzed by GC-MS. The LO samples mainly contained phenols, alcohols and ketones while HO consisted alkanes and organic acids. Additionally, aldehydes and other organic compounds were also found in products.

Through hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL), lignocellulosic biomass is directly hydrolyzed into small organics like monosaccharides, monophenols and acids, which can be used as valuable chemicals by further purification. This study aims at investigating the feasibility of simultaneous separation of monophenols from sugar and acids in model lignocellulosic hydrolysate solution through two-stage nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) process. The effects of pressure, temperature and pH on the solute retentions and permeate flux were examined with an eight-solute sugar-monophenols-acids model solution. NF-RO (DK-SE) two-stage membrane process was performed to confirm the multistage separation performance of model hydrolysates under an optimal operation condition. Results showed that membranes with higher water permeability had better performance in separation of sugar from monophenols. The decrease in temperature promoted separation of both acetic acid and monophenols from sugar, while higher pressure and lower temperature favored separation of acetic acid from phenols . The pH should be kept at low values to maintain good monophenols simultaneous separation of from sugar and acids. The maximum separation factors of acetic acid over 2,6-dimethoxyphenol and 2,6-dimethoxyphenol over glucose were 99.59 by RO membrane SE and 29.99 by NF membrane DK, respectively. Two-stage membrane process (DK NF+SE RO) was proven to be a feasible way to fractionate model HTL hydrolysates into three parts: incomplete hydrolyzed biomass fragments, monophenols riched concentrate, and acetic acid permeate.

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is one of the most promising technologies for biofuel production. The preparation and application of catalysts for HTL have been the research focus in recent years. In this study, a new synergistic catalytic process strategy is proposed. CuO–CeO2/γ-Al2O3 was used as an in situ hydrogen donor catalyst and Ni–Co/SAPO-34 was synthesized for hydroprocessing to improve bio-oil production process. The results of XRD and XPS demonstrated that the metal components were well supported on the catalyst. When the two catalysts were mixed, the yield of bio-oil increased from 51.00% to 64.51%, the carbon recovery rate raised from 69.53% to 88.18%, the energy recovery rate grew from 63.42% to 80.22%, and the S content is relatively reduced by 83.3%. Also, TG analysis showed that the content of light components in bio-oil increased. Moreover, the hydrocarbons and alcohols were observed to a higher proportion from the GC-MS analysis. This new method still has high catalytic activity after repeated use for five times. This study provides a new idea for preparing higher yield and superior quality bio-oil.

The effect of Na 2 CO 3 , Fe and Na 2 CO 3 + Fe during hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of wheat stalk with different temperature and reaction time was investigated in this study. The results indicated that Na 2 CO 3 + Fe can promote the cracking of wheat stalk compared with Na 2 CO 3 or Fe. Meanwhile, higher temperature favored the decomposition of wheat stalk and formation of heavy bio-oil. The highest heavy bio-oil yield was 24.25 wt% and the maximum liquefaction conversion rate was 89.45 wt% in system of Na 2 CO 3 + Fe at 270 °C. The analysis results indicated that longer reaction time could promote liquefaction conversion especially for heavy bio-oil with Na 2 CO 3 + Fe during the process of HTL. GC–MS, UPLC-MS and FT-IR analysis indicated that the major organic compounds in heavy bio-oil were aromatic compounds , alcohols, ketones, alkanes, and aldehydes, among of them aromatic compounds were the most prevalent.

This paper describes catalytic consequence of hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of Dunaliella tertiolecta ( D. tertiolecta ) over carbon nanotubes (CNTs) supported metals catalysts to produce bio-oil. When Co/CNTs is used as catalysts, the conversion and bio-oil yield increase to 95.78 and 40.25 wt.%, respectively. Chemical analysis results showed that the introduction of catalyst significantly affected the chemical composition of bio-oil with a higher percentage of hydrocarbons and a lower content of fatty acid. The introduction of metal into CNTs had no change in the basic CNT skeleton and the loaded metal nanoparticles encapsulated within the CNT enhances the disorder and defects in CNTs . Based on our results and the literature, the plausible general reaction and catalytic HTL pathways of D. tertiolecta are proposed.

Ru supported on activated carbon (C), Al 2 O 3 , CeO 2 , MgO, TiO 2 , and ZrO 2 were prepared and employed to boost supercritical water gasification (SCWG) of microalgae hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) downstream water at 600 °C for 1 h. Effects of catalysts, water density, and Ru/C loading on total organic carbon (TOC) reduction, carbon gasification efficiency (CGE), and gas yield were examined. All the Ru catalysts showed a positive effect on TOC reduction and converted organics in the HTL downstream water to fuel gas, with H 2 and CH 4 as the two most abundant component. With the addition of Ru/C, almost complete removal of TOC, the highest CGE, and H 2 yield were achieved due to its largest metal dispersion. With the addition of Ru/C, increasing water density and catalyst loading favored TOC reduction and CGE increase as well as the total gas yield. The highest H 2 content of 50% and yield of 2.62 mmol/g (aq.) were obtained at the highest catalyst loading of 12.0 mg (Ru/C) /mL (aq.) . This study suggested that SCWG with the addition of Ru/C was a promising strategy to produce fuel gas rich in H 2 , from the organics in the microalgae HTL downstream water.

In this study, various water splitting metals (Mg, Al, Zn, and Fe) were investigated for lignin HDO-HTL. Their behaviors during autocatalyzed hydrogenation and interactions with Al–Ni alloy catalyst during non-autocatalyzed hydrogenation were studied. The relationships between Mg, Zn, and Fe with Al–Ni catalyst were synergistic in HTL for bio-oils generation, leading to higher bio-oil yields in non-autocatalytic process than in autocatalytic process and Al–Ni catalytic HDO process. In contrast, because the effect of γ-AlO(OH) was strengthened when Al was used, the coking phenomenon was induced, leading to an antagonistic effect towards bio-oil production. Additionally, although the production of hydrogen was the lowest when Fe was applied, the bio-oil yields reached the highest (44.53 wt% in non-autocatalytic process and 49.83 wt% in autocatalytic process, respectively) with the deoxygenation degrees of 8.41% in non-autocatalytic process and 9.75% in autocatalytic process. Accordingly, Fe exhibited significant potential in lignin in-situ HDO-HTL.

The conversion of agricultural and forestry waste biomass materials into bio-oil by mild hydro-thermal technology has a positive effect on extending the agricultural industry chain and alleviating the world energy crisis. The interaction investigation of biomass components during bio-oil formation can be significant for the efficient conversion of lignocellulose when different raw materials are fed together. In this paper, a bio-oil pyrolysis behavior (thermogravimetric analysis, TG) perspective component interaction investigation of cotton stalks under low-temperature hydro-thermal conversion (220 °C) was studied. Cellulose, hemi-cellulose, lignin, and protein were used as lignocellulose model components, by their simple binary blending and multi-variate blending and combined with thermo-gravimetric analysis and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) characterization and analysis. The interaction of different model components and real biomass raw material components in the hydro-thermal process was explored. Results showed that the components of hydro-thermal bio-oil from cotton stalks were highly correlated with the interactions between cellulose, hemi-cellulose, lignin, and protein. During the hydro-thermal process, cellulose and hemi-cellulose inhibit each other, which reduces the content of ketones, aldehydes, ethers, and alcohols in bio-oil. Interaction between cellulose and lignin was obvious, which promotes the formation of oligomers, such as ketones, aldehydes, esters, phenols, and aliphatic, while inhibiting the production of aromatic and multi-hybrid compounds. Otherwise, there was no obvious interaction effect between hemi-cellulose and lignin or between lignin and protein. This research will guide the industrialization of lignocellulose, especially the possible co-feed hydro-thermal conversion technology.Keywords:bio-oil;cotton stalk;hydro-thermal liquefaction;interaction;multi-variate blending

The intensification of environmental pollution and significant consumption of fossil fuels has led to widespread attention on developing renewable resources. As a carbon-containing renewable energy source, Spirulina is characterized by its fast growth cycle and wide distribution. Currently, one of the research hotspots is the conversion of Spirulina into bio-oil through hydrothermal liquefaction. However, studies on the two-stage hydrothermal liquefaction of Spirulina predominantly concentrate on the product yield or composition. There is relatively little research on thermodynamic (energy) analysis and techno-economic assessment during the reaction process. The main bio-oil components from two-stage hydrothermal liquefaction of Spirulina are ketones and acids with 44.9 % and 34.1 %, respectively. Compared to no-catalysis, two-stage hydrothermal liquefaction of Spirulina over HZSM-5, alkili-modified HZSM-5, and Ni@alkali-modified HZSM-5 increase the relative content of hydrocarbons to 6.6 %, 32.9 % and 48.1 %, respectively. Energy analysis and techno-economic assessment are conducted with Aspen Plus simulation, revealing a exergy efficiency of 56.4 % for the catalytic two-stage hydrothermal liquefaction of Spirulina compared with 43.6 % over no-catalyst. The primary losses occur in the first stage of the reaction process (248.6 kW) and the cooling process (10.7 kW) for catalytic two-stage hydrothermal liquefaction of Spirulina . The hourly price of producing 1 kg bio-oil with a catalyst is $3.67, while without a catalyst, it is $4.54 kg −1 ; obtaining a unit of chemical exergy costs $0.14×10 −3 kJ −1 through catalysis. Moreover, the fluctuations in the prices of sulfuric acid and catalysts are most sensitive to the cost price of bio-oil with or without catalysts in the two-stage hydrothermal liquefaction process, with the values being 10.06 % and 8.10 %. This study has important significance for efficient transformation and energy utilization of Spirulina .
