Co-hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of livestock manure and biomass might improve the fuel properties of the hydrochar due to the high reactivity of the biomass-derived intermediates with the abundant oxygen-containing functionalities. However, the complicated compositions make it difficult to explicit the specific roles of the individual components of biomass played in the co-HTC process. In this study, cellulose was used for co-HTC with swine manure to investigate the influence on the properties of the hydrochar . The yield of hydrochar obtained from co-HTC reduced gradually with the cellulose proportion increased, and the solid yield was lower than the theoretical value. This was because the cellulose-derived intermediates favored the stability of the fragments from hydrolysis of swine manure. The increased temperature resulted in the reduction of the hydrochar yield whereas the prolonged time enhanced the formation of solid product. The interaction of the co-HTC intermediates facilitated the formation of O-containing species, thus making the solid more oxygen- and hydrogen-rich with a higher volatility. In addition, the co-HTC affected the evolution of functionalities like -OH and C O during the thermal treatment of the hydrochar and altered its morphology by stuffing the pores from swine manure-derived solid with the microspheres from HTC of cellulose. The interaction of the varied intermediates also impacted the formation of amines, ketones, carboxylic acids , esters, aromatics and the polymeric products in distinct ways.

Hydrothermal carbonization combined with wet chemical methods for treating sewage sludge produce valuable hydrochar and phosphorus. However, further investigation is needed to optimize the balance among phosphorus recovery, heavy metal leaching, residual hydrochar utilization to enhance overall process benefits. In this study, acid leaching on hydrochar was conducted using HCl, H 2 SO 4 , citric acid at 0.1 – 1.0 M acid concentration for 10 – 1440 min, the liquid-to-solid ratio between 50 to 500 mL/g. Employing single-factor experiments, response surface methodology, various characterization techniques, the impacts of acid leaching on the leaching rates of phosphorus and heavy metals, along with residual rate and properties of the remaining hydrochar, were quantitatively assessed. The results indicate leaching parameters directly impact the phosphorus leaching rate. HCl and H 2 SO 4 achieve their corresponding maximum phosphorus leaching rate within 60 min at acid concentration 0.5 M, liquid-to-solid ratio 500 mL/g, while using citric acid requires 360 min. When H 2 SO 4 is used as the extractant, the corresponding maximum phosphorus leaching rate can be maintained within a wider leaching time and acid concentration range. A moderate acid concentration, prolonged leaching time, higher liquid-to-solid ratio lead to increased levels of heavy metal concomitant leaching. Compared to HCl and citric acid, using H 2 SO 4 as extractant results in lower heavy metal leaching and lower sensitivity to leaching parameters. The residual rates of hydrochar range from 59.3% to 77.3%, with H 2 SO 4 and HCl as extractant yielding higher residual rates than citric acid. The properties of the remaining hydrochar were altered by acid leaching, resulting in a decrease in specific surface area and pore number, but an increase in oxygen-containing functional groups and calorific value, which affects its subsequent utilization. Finally, based on the aforementioned results and potential process scenarios, the selection of optimal acid leaching parameters was discussed. The results provide reference for the selection of phosphorus recovery and resource utilization pathway based on sludge-derived hydrochar.

Hydrochar is an environmentally friendly and cheap adsorbent, but its adsorption amounts for anions is very limited. The functionalized hydrochar can overcome this shortcoming. Herein, polyethyleneimine-modified hydrochar (PEI-HC) was synthesized from hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of methyl acrylate and bamboo after addition of initiator ammonium persulfate, and then modified by polyethyleneimine (PEI), which was used to treat Cr(VI). PEI-HC was tested by XANES, EXAFS, SEM-EDS, XPS, FTIR, N 2 sorption isotherms, zeta potential, and elemental analyses. The characterizations showed that PEI was successfully grafted onto hydrochar, and the PEI-HC was rich in N and O functional groups, which presented high Cr(VI) sorption ability (528.41 mg·g −1 at pH 2). The bath experiments found the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Freundlich equations can well describe the adsorption kinetics and isotherm of the Cr(VI) adsorption onto PEI-HC, respectively. Electrostatic interaction, reduction, complexation, and H-bonding are the main removal mechanisms as supported by XANES, EXAFS, XPS, and FTIR. This study provides a strategy of combining HTC and free radical graft polymerization to convert agricultural and forestry wastes into functionalized hydrochar, showing highly efficient removal of Cr(VI).

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) has been demonstrated as an effective method for preparing hydrochar to realize efficient utilization of biomass resources. In this study, both trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and phosphorous acid (PA) under low temperature were used as swelling solvents to disrupt the cellulose crystalline structure within 1 h with distinct physiochemical properties. After TFA and PA swelling pretreatment, by means of hydrothermal carbonization, two varieties of swollen cellulose-derived hydrochars were produced. The results showed that the TFA and PA swelling pretreatment significantly enhanced the dehydration and deoxidation of cellulose through an HTC process. The H/C value and O/C value of swelled cellulose are lower than nonswelled by more than 4% at 220 °C, which demonstrates that the dehydrogenation reaction is enhanced during the hydrothermal process of swollen cellulose. Particle size as well as microscopic arrangement of hydrochars were distinctly different due to swelling cellulose. The particle size of hydrothermal carbon microspheres increases by a swelling process at the same hydrothermal carbonazition temperature. TFA-HTC have an estimate diameter of 0.2 μm at 220 °C, which is equivalent to the size of CEL-HTC-280. This study illustrates the mechanism for hydrothermal carbonization of TFA and PA swollen cellulose and provides a novel route for directionally regulating hydrothermal carbon microspheres and developing carbon-based catalysts.

Activated carbons derived from hydrothermal carbonization of sucrose and subsequent KOH activation have been prepared and tested for the adsorptive removal of refractory thiophenic compounds. Textural and chemical properties of the carbons and their corresponding impacts on adsorption rates and capacities were discussed in detail. The optimum carbon possessed high adsorption capacity (41.5 mgS/g for 300 ppmwS model oil), fast adsorption rate (97% saturated within 5 min) as well as relatively good selectivity for the adsorption of thiophenic compounds due to the abundant small micropores, suitable mesopore fraction and various oxygen functionalities present in the carbon. Combined with the economic and environmental merits of the preparation procedure, the sucrose-derived activated carbons are promising candidates for potential practical applications.

In this study, a novel hydrochar adsorbent derived from lotus seedpods was synthesized and subsequently modified to enhance its adsorption efficiency for quinoline contaminated wastewater. Using lotus seedpods as biomass raw material, lotus seedpod hydrochar (LSH) was prepared by hydrothermal carbonization method, and it was modified with hydrochloric acid (HA) and phosphoric acid (PA) as modifiers to improve adsorption efficiency. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms of quinoline on both the unmodified and modified hydrochars were studied in detail to elucidate the underlying adsorption mechanisms. Furthermore, the effect of coexisting organic pollutants, i.e. phenol and pyridine, commonly found in coking effluents, on the quinoline adsorption efficiency of hydrochar was investigated. The regenerative potential of the adsorbent was explored through desorption studies to assess the reusability and practicality of hydrochar post-adsorption. The optimal conditions for modified LSH were determined as follows: an adsorbent dosage of 3 g/L, pH of 3, an initial quinoline concentration of 200 mg/L, and a contact time of 90 minutes. The maximum adsorption capacities for PA-LSH and HA-LSH were 48.59 mg/g and 49.12 mg/g, respectively. Among the types of modification agents, acid modifiers, particularly 20 % phosphoric acid and 20 % hydrochloric acid, significantly enhanced the adsorption efficiency, increasing the adsorption rates by 24.24 % and 14.56 %, respectively, compared to unmodified hydrochar (64.06 %). Coexisting pollutants minimally affected quinoline adsorption, with phosphoric acid-modified hydrochar maintaining 80.33 % removal in simulated coking wastewater. Regeneration with hydrochloric acid showed improved utility, with modified hydrochar sustaining over 80 % adsorption after three cycles. This research not only presents an innovative approach to the development of efficient adsorbents for quinoline removal, but also provides insight into the adsorption behavior of hydrochar in the complex wastewater systems. The findings contribute to both the advancement of sustainable water treatment technologies and the use of biomass-derived materials for environmental remediation. As such, this work holds promise for applications in wastewater treatment and environmental remediation.

An innovative phytic acid modified reed straw-derived hydrochar composite (PA-C-RBC) was prepared by using inexpensive reed straw and non-toxic phytic acid for the removal of uranium(VI) from aqueous environment. Several characterization results showed that PA-C-RBC was rough and porous with a large number of hydroxyl, carboxyl, and phosphate groups. The uranium(VI) adsorption process by PA-C-RBC conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models, and the theoretical maximal adsorption capacity could attain 418.78 mg/g at pH 5.0. PA-C-RBC had 72.66 % of selectivity and 6772.99 mL/g of distribution coefficient for U(VI). Due to the strong chelating between the hydroxyl and phosphate groups on PA-C-RBC and U(VI), PA-C-RBC had excellent adsorption selectivity. These finding highlighted a high potential for removing U(VI) from aqueous solutions.

Recently, considerable attention has been given to the hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of waste rice straw for the production of bio-oil and hydrochar. However, hydrochar material could not be directly applied in the environmental field, due to its limited porosity and surface area. In order to improve the porosity and adsorption capacity of rice straw-derived hydrochar, it was activated and magnetized to a magnetic activated carbon. The activation condition for hydrochar was firstly considered, due to the negative effect of the magnetic medium. Results suggested that the as-prepared magnetic activated carbon possessed a large surface area (around 674 m2 g−1), and exhibited both a high adsorption capacity and a fast adsorption rate for triclosan (TCS) removal. In addition, magnetic activated carbon can be easily recovered from aqueous solutions by an external magnetic field. Overall, the waste rice straw-derived hydrochar can be transformed to a highly efficient magnetic adsorbent for TCS removal.

The rare earth metal element lanthanum (La) possesses carcinogenic, genotoxic, and accumulative properties, necessitating urgent development of an efficient and cost-effective method to remove La. However, current sorbents still encounter challenges such as poor selectivity, low sorption capacity, and high production costs. This study therefore proposes a promising solution: the creation of phytic acid–assisted sludge hydrochars (P-SHCs) to eliminate La from water and soil environments. This method harnesses phytic acid's exceptional binding ability and the economical hydrothermal carbonization process. P-SHCs exhibit robust sorption affinity, fast sorption kinetics, and excellent sorption selectivity for La when compared with pristine hydrochars (SHCs). This advantage arises from the remarkable binding ability of phosphate functional groups (polyphosphates) on P-SHCs, forming P-O-La complexes. Moreover, P-SHCs demonstrate sustained sorption efficiency across at least five cycles, with a slight decrease attributed to the loss of phosphorus species and mass during recycling. Furthermore, P-SHCs demonstrated superior economic feasibility, with a higher estimated cost-benefit ratio than that of other sorbents. Our study further validates the exceptional passivation capability of P-SHCs, showcasing relative stabilization efficiency ranging from 37.6 % to 79.6 % for La contamination. Additionally, acting as soil passivation agents, P-SHCs foster the enrichment of specific soil microorganisms such as Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria, capable of solubilizing phosphorus and resisting heavy metals. These findings present novel ideas and technical support for employing P-SHCs in combatting environmental pollution stemming from rare earth metals.

An adsorbent hydrochar was synthesized from corn cobs and modified with polyethylene imine (PEI). The hydrochars before and after modification were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and thermogravimetric analysis. FTIR and XPS revealed that the PEI was grafted onto the hydrochar via ether and imine bonds formed with glutaraldehyde. The maximum adsorption capacities for Cr(VI) (33.663 mg/g) and Ni(II) (29.059 mg/g) on the modified hydrochars were 365% and 43.7% higher, respectively, than those on the unmodified hydrochar. A pseudo-second-order model described the adsorption of Ni(II) and Cr(VI) on all the adsorbents. The adsorption of Cr(VI) was endothermic, spontaneous, increased disorder, and obeyed the Langmuir model. By contrast, the adsorption of Ni(II) was exothermic, spontaneous, decreased disorder, and obeyed the Freundlich model. XPS confirmed that the adsorption sites and mechanisms for Ni(II) and Cr(VI) on the modified hydrochars were different.

Abstract Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) combined with pelletization is an efficient upgrading process to convert biomass into energy-dense pellets. Binders usually serve an important role in the quality of biofuel pellets. Here, hydrochar was produced from tobacco stem through HTC, and was pelletized in the presence of various binders. The effect of four kinds of binders (K 2 CO 3 , CaCO 3 , xanthan gum and carboxymethyl cellulose) on the basic fuel properties, mechanical strength, moisture adsorption and combustion characteristics was investigated. The results showed that K 2 CO 3 assisted pellet had decreased compressive strength, increased hygroscopicity and high combustion residues. The compressive strength of pellets increased with increasing amount CaCO 3 binder probably due to the hardening effect of enhanced adhesion attraction forces between adjacent particles. Meanwhile, the CaCO 3 assisted pellet exhibited the lowest moisture uptake behavior. In addition, the introduction of organic binders led to improved mechanical strength, especially for xanthan binder, which could be ascribed to the formation of solid bridges and enhancement of adhesion forces between particles. TGA results suggested that the binder-assisted pellets exhibited desirable combustion characteristics such as decreased ignition temperature and increased comprehensive combustibility index. Kinetic parameters of the combustion process of binder-assisted pellets were also determined by employing the model free isoconversional Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose method. This study demonstrated that HTC of tobacco stem combined with pelletization in the presence of appropriate binders provide an alternative for solid biofuel pellets production. Hydrothermal carbon (HC) demonstrates significant potential in heavy metal removal due to its low production cost and high adsorption efficiency. However, the impact of drying methods on HC performance is often overlooked. This study employed six types of agricultural waste as precursors to prepare HC using four different drying methods and evaluated their performance through Cd 2+ adsorption experiments. Compared to natural drying, vacuum high temperature oven drying significantly increased the C-O functional group content by 25.29 %, optimized the pore structure, thereby enhancing the specific surface area and promoting mass transfer, diffusion, and adsorption behavior. In contrast, high temperature oven drying had a lesser degree of damage to the pore structure, while vacuum freeze drying led to the collapse of pores due to mechanical forces during ice crystal formation and sublimation, reducing the specific surface area to 2.15 m 2 /g. Additionally, the study comprehensively investigated other mechanisms such as complexation, co-precipitation, kinetics, and theoretical calculations. The practicality of this HC was assessed through seven cycles of adsorption-desorption. This study provides important scientific basis for the application of hydrothermal carbon in heavy metal removal, emphasizes the key role of drying methods, and points to a more energy-saving and environmentally friendly realization path.
