Directional oil extraction: A new application of MXene as an oil development agent in petroleum exploration and production

Lu Wang,Maozhang Tian,Wenfeng Song,Xinmin Song,Qun Zhang,Hao Shen,Yanyao Shi,Jun Zhang,Jingjie Hou,Saijie Song,Lutao Yang,Weifeng Lv

Problems occurring in oilfields after secondary oil recovery can include low oil content, difficulty in tracing, and high production costs. The use of two-dimensional nanomaterials can improve the efficiency of oil exploration and extraction. In this study, we designed a new nanofluid based on lecithin-modified MXene (lecithin@MXene-COOH) for directional oil extraction and tertiary oil recovery. MXene has good interfacial affinity, and 0.02 % lecithin@MXene-COOH can be effectively enriched at the oil–water interface. The nanofluid based on lecithin@MXene-COOH has excellent emulsifying properties, and we found that the optimal formulation has an emulsifying volume of 12.8 mL. The efficient enrichment of lecithin@MXene-COOH at the oil–water interface means that it can effectively define the position of oil droplets. The lecithin@MXene-COOH nanofluid has excellent oil displacement effect, and can efficiently drive oil, with an improvement of recovery efficiency of up to 15.95 % after the traditional flooding stage. This research has developed a new application of MXene-based nanomaterials, and the lecithin@MXene-COOH nanofluid is predicted to have a successful future in the field of oilfield tracing and extraction.

Rutile flotation with Pb2+ ions as activator: Adsorption of Pb2+ at rutile/water interface

Hongqiang Li,Shunxing Mu,Xiaoqing Weng,Yunliang Zhao,Shaoxian Song

The adsorption of Pb 2+ at the rutile/water interface has been studied for the activation of rutile flotation with salicyl hydroxamic acid (SHA) as a collector in this work. This study was performed through measurement of the zeta potential, adsorption capacity, calorimetry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The experimental results showed that the adsorption of SHA on rutile and the flotability of rutile were significantly improved by the addition of Pb 2+ . This improvement was attributed to the specific adsorption of Pb 2+ in the form of PbOH + , which interacted with the Ti-OH at the rutile surface and formed a surface Ti-O-Pb + complex. This adsorption followed the Langmuir model. It reversed the zeta potential sign of rutile at pH 5.5⿿6.8 and had a heat of adsorption of ⿿46.71   kJ/mol, suggesting the occurrence of a chemiosorptive process.

Hydrophobic interfaces regulate iron carbide phases and catalytic performance of FeZnOx nanoparticles for Fischer-Tropsch to olefins

Xiaozhe Liu,Tiejun Lin,Peigong Liu,Liangshu Zhong

Fischer-Tropsch to olefins (FTO) with controllable iron carbide phase and high carbon utilization efficiency for Fe-based nanocatalyst attracts great interest but remains challenge. Herein, we report that the metastable Fe 7 C 3 phase can be effectively tailored by altering shell thickness of hydrophobic SiO 2 over a core-shell nanostructured FeZn@SiO 2 -c nanocatalyst. χ-Fe 5 C 2 was the dominated iron carbide phase for FeZnO x and FeZn@SiO 2 nanocatalysts, while numerous Fe 7 C 3 phases existed for hydrophobic FeZn@SiO 2 -c nanospheres . Compared with FeZnO x , the CO 2 selectivity of FeZn@ 4.1-SiO 2 -c decreased by > 70%, while 1.7-fold higher olefins selectivity was simultaneously obtained during syngas conversion process. The hydrophobic interface greatly suppressed the water-gas-shift reaction by promoting the quick diffusion of water, and the as-formed H 2 -lean and CO-rich local chemical environment benefits the formation of Fe 7 C 3 and olefins products. This work provides a promising strategy to design phase-stable Fe 7 C 3 with improvement of carbon efficiency for Fe-based nanocatalysts.

Equilibrium and self-assembly of Janus particles at liquid-liquid interfaces for the film formation

Yan Pang,Lin Li,Yi Lou,Xiang Wang,Zhaomiao Liu

This article investigates the equilibrium arrangement, self-assembly process, and subsequent curing of amphiphilic snowman-shaped Janus particles at the oil-water interface. The independent Janus particles are in vertical equilibrium state and the contact position of the oil-water interface is at the largest cross section of the particle’s hydrophobic phase. Under the effect of the surface tension and the adsorption of materials, Janus particles may form particle combinations including the particle pairs and the particle triangle, whose inner and outer sides have the liquid surface exhibiting completely opposite contact angles. Particle combinations form stable parallel double-chain structures with diverse shapes after the self-assembly process. However, the single Janus particles attain a state of mechanical equilibrium under the influence of surrounding particles, enabling them to assemble into regular array structures. The relationship of interfacial tension coefficient between phases can be changed by adjusting the oil-water system, which leads to variations in the self-assembly speed and the final arrangement results. The thin-film with uniformly distributed vertical particles is achieved by replacing the underlying deionized water with a curing agent. Based on the understanding of the interactions between irregularly shaped Janus particles at the oil-water interface, it will be convenient to achieve the controllable self-assembly and widely applications of these particles.

Oil/water interfacial self-assembly for the organization of hydrophobic NaYF4:Yb, Er nanoplatelets into closely-packed fluorescent nanofilms

Yuan Ren,Min Chen,Linfeng Hu,Xiaosheng Fang,Limin Wu

This paper presents an oil/water interface self-assembly strategy for the fabrication of hydrophobic nanoparticles into mono- and multi-layered nanofilms with NaYF4:Yb,Er nanoplatelets as a prototype. In this approach, hydrophobic β-NaYF4:Yb,Er nanoplatelets dispersed in chloroform solvent are used as the sub-phase, then a certain amount of water is added to produce a chloroform/water interface. When ethanol is added, the up-conversion NaYF4:Yb,Er nanoplatelets are found to readily self-assemble at the oil/water interface into a closely-packed mono- or multi-layer nanofilm with a preferred [001] orientation. Compared with the previous water/oil interface self-assembly strategy, the present method is not only used for fabrication of hydrophobic nanoparticles into high quality nanofilms, but also is environmentally friendly and is safe to the operator.

Ethoxylated molybdenum disulphide based nanofluid for enhanced oil recovery

Infant Raj,Zhuo Lu,Ji-Rui Hou,Yu-Chen Wen,Li-Xiao Xiao

Despite advances in renewable energy sources, the world's current infrastructure and consumption patterns still heavily depend on crude oil. Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) is a crucial method for significantly increasing the amount of crude oil extracted from mature and declining oil fields. Nanomaterials have shown great potential in improving EOR methods due to their unique properties, such as high surface area, tunable surface chemistry, and the ability to interact at the molecular level with fluids and rock surfaces. This study examines the potential use of incorporating ethoxylated molybdenum disulfide with a unique three-dimensional flower-like morphology for overcoming the challenges associated with oil recovery from reservoirs characterized by complex pore structures and low permeability. The synthesized nanomaterial features a chemical composition that encompasses a polar ethoxy group linking molybdenum disulfide nanosheets and an alkylamine chain. The ethoxy group promotes interactions with water molecules through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic forces, disrupting the cohesive forces among water molecules and reduction surface tension at the oil-water interface. As a result, the nanomaterial achieves an ultra-low interfacial tension of 10 -3 mN/m. Core flooding experiments demonstrate a significant oil recovery of approximately 70% at a concentration as low as 50 ppm. This research paves the way for the design and synthesis of advanced extended surfactant-like nanomaterials, offering a promising avenue for enhancing oil recovery efficiency.

Water depth alters the fate of estrone across the sediment–water interface in a typical inland lake

Linzhu Du,Shuhang Wang,Xia Jiang,Zhihao Wu,Arne Bratkic,Wei Guo

Water depth variation alters lake sediment environments, affecting the exchange of oxygen, trace elements, and nutrients at the sediment–water interface (SWI). However, there is still limited information on the in-situ fate of refractory emerging pollutants such as estrogenic compounds (ECs) at the SWI of different water depths in lakes. In this study, we integrated active sampling and diffusive gradients in thin film (DGT) technology to in-situ investigate the distribution, diffusion, and microbial responses of estrone (E1) at the SWI from the shallow-water zone (SZ), transition-water zone (TZ), and deep-water zone (DZ) in a typical inland lake of northern China. The surface sediment of the DZ accumulated most E1 (479.57 ± 194.90 ng/kg). In the vertical profile of the sediments, for SZ and TZ, E1 concentration in the sediment, porewater, and DGT fluctuated within a certain concentration range with increasing sediment depth. For the DZ, it exhibited a fluctuating and increasing trend with increasing depth. Dynamic migration analysis of E1 indicated partial resupply in each zone, and the resupply parameter R was 0.102 to 0.416 in the SZ, 0.111 to 0.384 in the TZ, and 0.084 to 0.374 in the DZ, respectively. The resupply capacity in the upper sediment layers (−1 to −4 cm) was higher for the TZ and DZ, whereas the SZ showed higher capacity in the lower layers (−5 to −9 cm). Based on the microbial sequencing results, Sulfuricurvum (typically present in microaerophilic and anoxic conditions) was predominant in the DZ (17.99 ± 15.4 %). Achromobacter (typical E1-degrading genus distributed in oxic environments) was more abundant in the SZ, which led to a higher E1 degradation potential in this zone. The results of this study shed light on the fate of E1 in the SWI of lakes at different water depths, facilitating a more precise control of estrogenic pollution in lake sediments.

Intervention of organophosphate esters in phospholipids hypochlorination at the air-water interface

Zhilong Xu,Jing He,Kai Yu,Yun Ju,Jing Zhao,Hong Zhang,Jie Jiang

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are a serious and pervasive indoor environmental pollutant, and their extensive use and frequent detection in indoor environments have raised growing concerns globally about their impact on the respiratory system. Simultaneously, increasing attention has been directed toward interfacial hypochlorous acid (HOCl) chemistry, particularly in relation to indoor air quality and public health. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying HOCl-mediated oxidation of phospholipids in the presence of OPEs remain unclear. This study utilized an online air-water interface reaction monitoring technique to examine the effects of ten OPEs, including alkyl, chlorinated, and aryl OPEs, on the oxidation of a model lung phospholipid 1-Palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-(1′-rac-glycerol) (POPG) exposed to HOCl at the air-water interface. The results indicated that OPEs inhibit the oxidation of phospholipids by HOCl at the air-water interface, and this inhibitory effect is correlated with the concentration of OPEs and their water-oil partition coefficient (LogP). Mechanistic studies demonstrated that the hydrophilicity of OPEs enables their incorporation into the phospholipid monolayer, resulting in a compact arrangement of POPG. This arrangement partially shields the C=C double bonds from exposure to HOCl, thereby inhibiting the oxidation of POPG at the air-water interface. These findings elucidate the molecular mechanisms by which OPEs modulate HOCl-induced phospholipid oxidation, providing a theoretical foundation for the development of specific drugs targeting related diseases.

An insight into the solar demulsification of highly emulsified water produced from oilfields by monitoring the viscosity, zeta potential, particle size and rheology

Meiling Fan,Chunhong Nie,Huan Du,Jiawen Ni,Baohui Wang,Xirui Wang

Facing increasing challenges to oil field production and energy utilization, tertiary oil recovery technologies, exemplified by alkali-surfactant-polymer (ASP) flooding, can significantly improve the oil recovery. However, it has produced an enormous amount of highly emulsified water to increase the tough water treatment in the oilfield. Currently, the dominated treatments have been focused on the traditional treatment methods, such as the thermal demulsification, electric demulsification and gas flotation demulsification. These technologies have high energy consumption and low efficiency, which blocks their wide applications in engineering. In this paper, we first performed a solar-driven sustainable demulsification by adopting the highly emulsified water produced from ASP flooding in the oilfield. The solar energy has three-fold effects, i.e. the photo, thermo and electrochemical action, on the demulsification. The solar thermal and electrochemical process serves as controlling domains for the thermo-aided electrochemical oxidation and separation to break the organic surfactants and polymers in the O/W interface. For an insight into solar demulsification, we monitored the variation of the viscosity, zeta potential, particle size, rheology and percent removal of the highly emulsified water in the real time. The results show the achievements of the solar O/W demulsification and separation via the five measurable parameters dominated by three solar based fields. The viscosity of the highly emulsified emulsion was decreased from 1.41 mPa s to 1.0 mPa s. The negative zeta potential was increased, which means that the repulsive electrostatic force among oil droplets was reduced. The viscoelasticity of the O/W interface was decreased, so the strength of the interface film was decreased. By monitoring the variation of the oil droplet size and distribution, it can be concluded that the mechanism of solar demulsification is a process in which the oil droplets conduct to continuously flocculate and coalesce, finally creaming or sedimentation. The percent removal reached 82.84% at a 60 °C temperature under the condition of 7 V potential driven by the light radiation. Further characterizations show that solar energy has a great effect on treating highly emulsified water produced from oilfields with low energy consumption and environmental protection.

In situ crosslinking sodium alginate on oil-water interface to stabilize the O/W emulsions

Zhiming Gao,Chen Gao,Wenxin Jiang,Longquan Xu,Bing Hu,Xiaolin Yao,Yanlei Li,Yuehan Wu

It has been a great challenge of using natural polysaccharides to stabilize food emulsions , due to their poor amphiphilicity. In this study, a novel strategy of using polysaccharide to stabilize O/W emulsions was developed, through in situ crosslinking of sodium alginate on oil-water interface. During the emulsifying process, the acetic acid migrated across the interface, and induced the released of calcium ions , which immediately crosslinked the sodium alginate on interface. Results showed that the oil droplets were encapsulated in the integral polysaccharide shells. The droplet size of the emulsions located in the range from 20 to 200 μm. The concentration of sodium alginate and HAc, as well as the mixing rates were showed to be positively related with the thickness of the shell. However, excess calcium ions would disintegrate the shell structure. Additionally, the interfacial crosslinked sodium alginate stabilized emulsions exhibited excellent physical stability under centrifugating and freeze-thawing.

Graphene oxide at oil-water interfaces: Adsorption, assembly & demulsification

Shenwen Fang,Ting Chen,Bin Chen,Yan Xiong,Ying Zhu,Ming Duan

Graphene oxide (GO) has gathered widespread interest within the scientific community due to its unique properties. Understanding the adsorption behaviors of GO at the oil–water interface has become increasingly important both in terms of fundamental science and applications of GO in emulsions. In the present work, the adsorption dynamics of GO sheets at the toluene/water interface were explored by using pendant drop tensiometry to trace the evolution of oil/water interfacial tensions. A shift from diffusion-controlled to kinetic controlled feature was observed during the aging of the interface, indicating the irreversible adsorption of GO to the interface. Assembly of GO at oil/water interfaces in the presence of surfactants were discussed. Robust large-area films could be prepared by taking advantage of the assembly of GO at the oil/water interface in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and octane phenol polyoxyethylene-10. Corresponding interaction mechanisms were discussed. Ultimately, the acquired insights on the interfacial adsorption and the interfacial assembly behavior of GO sheets were combined to reveal the demulsification performance of GO for different emulsions. The findings in the present study are crucial for fully understanding the interfacial activity of GO in emulsions and might provide a facile way to prepare large-area graphene oxide thin films.

Salt-Induced Constructions of Gemini-like Surfactants at the Interface and Their Effects on the Interfacial Tension of a Water/Model Oil System

Han Jia,Pan Huang,Hongyan Wu,An Ma,Hongtao Zhou

It is an urgent issue to enhance oil recovery for unconventional reservoirs with high salinity. Focused on this topic, salt addition is a powerful tool to motivate the surfactant assembly at the water/oil interface and improve the interfacial activity. We used a cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and an anionic salt dicarboxylic acid sodium (CnDNa) to construct gemini-like surfactants at the interface and evaluated their ability to reduce the interfacial tension (IFT) between model oil (toluene and n-decane, v:v = 1:1) and water. Interestingly, the fabrication of a (CTAB) 2 /C4DNa gemini-like surfactant was hardly achieved at the fresh water/model oil interface, but accomplished at the brine/model oil interface. At a high NaCl concentration (100,000 mg L −1 ), the IFT value is reduced to 10 −3 mN m −1 order of magnitude, which is generally desired in practical applications. The control experiments displacing the surfactant type and the spacer length further confirmed the NaCl effects on the interfacial assembly.
