Remediation of metal-contaminated paddy soils by chemical washing with FeCl3 and citric acid

Gao Jianbo,Zhao Jie,Dong Changxun,Wu Longhua,Hu Pengjie

Purpose Batch extraction experiments were conducted to investigate the chemical washing of metal-contaminated paddy soils using mixtures of ferric chloride (FeCl 3 ) and citric acid (CTA). Materials and methods The effects of the extractants (FeCl 3 , CTA, or FeCl 3  + CTA) and washing cycles (single-step or multistep washing) on the metal removal efficiency were studied. FeCl 3  + CTA increased metal removal efficiency to some extent compared to single FeCl 3 or CTA. When the liquid-to-solid ratio was 2:1 with three washes and two rinses, a mixture of 10 mmol L −1 FeCl 3 and 20 mmol L −1 CTA removed 78.9% Cd, 15.8% Cu, 34.0% Zn, and 18.1% Pb from a Typic Fe–accumuli–Stagnic Anthrosols. Using multistep washing instead of single-step increased the metal extraction effect. Moreover, the removal efficiency and speciation of metals in different soils and changes in soil properties in washed soils were also studied. Results and discussion The removal rate of Cd was higher than that of Zn, Cu, or Pb because of the higher proportions of acid-soluble forms of Cd in the soils. The removal of metals from different soils depended on the distribution of metal speciation and soil type. Soil pH, CEC, exchangeable Ca, and exchangeable Mg decreased significantly after soil washing. Conclusions We conclude that chemical washing of metal-contaminated paddy soils with mixtures of FeCl 3 and citric acid may be a feasible technique for soil remediation.

A highly porous animal bone-derived char with a superiority of promoting nZVI for Cr(VI) sequestration in agricultural soils

Kai Liu,Fangbai Li,Qingwen Tian,Chengrong Nie,Yibing Ma,Zhenlong Zhu,Liping Fang,Yuanying Huang,Siwen Liu

Paddy soil and irrigation water are commonly contaminated with hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] near urban industrial areas, thereby threatening the safety of agricultural products and human health. In this study, we develop a porous and high specific area bone char (BC) to support nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) and apply it to remediate Cr(VI) pollution in water and paddy soil under anaerobic conditions. The batch experiments reveal that BC/nZVI exhibits a higher removal capacity of 516.7 mg/(g•nZVI) for Cr(VI) than nZVI when normalized to the actual nZVI content, which is 2.8 times that of nZVI; moreover, the highest nZVI utilization is the nZVI loading of 15% (BC/nZVI15). The Cr(VI) removal efficiency of BC/nZVI15 decreases with increasing pH (4 – 10). Coexisting ions (phosphate and carbonate) and humic acid can inhibit the removal of Cr(VI) with BC/nZVI15. Additionally, BC exhibits a strong advantage in promoting Cr(VI) removal by nZVI compared to the widely used biochar and activated carbon. Our results demonstrate that reduction and coprecipitation are the dominant Cr(VI) removal mechanisms. Furthermore, BC/nZVI15 shows a significantly higher reduction and removal efficiency as well as a strong anti-interference ability for Cr(VI) in paddy soil, as compared to nZVI. These findings provide a new effective material for remediating Cr(VI) pollution from water and soil.

Dynamic variation of dissolved As, Sb, Fe and S in paddy soil triggered by nitrate loading to overlaying water

Yuan Zhao-Feng,Zhang Sha,Gustave Williamson,Ge Tida,Zhu Zhenke,Shi Xiaoyu,Tang Xianjin,Chen Zheng

Purpose Arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) are toxic elements that usually co-occur in paddy soils due to their chemical similarity. Those elements are redox-sensitive and shift their species across the soil–water interface (SWI) where redox potentials change in every millimeter. In the real world, the distribution and speciation of As and Sb in soils are often influenced by external redox disturbance, but their temporospatial response remains poorly understood. This study aimed to address this gap by introducing external disturbance by adding nitrate into the overlying water. Methods Daily changes in the profile of As, Sb, iron (Fe), and sulfur (S) were measured using ICP-MS and the In-situ Porewater Iterative (IPI) sampler array. Results The results revealed a rapid formation of a sink for As and Fe at the oxic-anoxic transition zone within one day, persisting for at least 6 days and extending to ~ 30 mm below the SWI. Moreover, Sb was re-mobilized in the same area as the As and Fe sink, but the re-mobilized Sb zone was weaker, lasting only 4 days and extending to ~ 20 mm below the SWI. The presence of aqueous ferrous Fe below the transition zone facilitated the formation of Fe and As sink, while the presence of aqueous sulfide below the transition zone hindered the development of the Sb source. Conclusion These findings highlight the importance of carefully evaluating the impact of nitrate-based fertilizers or stabilization reagents when applied in As and Sb contaminated soils.

Effect of Soil Solution Properties and Cu2+ Co-Existence on the Adsorption of Sulfadiazine onto Paddy Soil

Ziwen Xu,Shiquan Lv,Shuxiang Hu,Liang Chao,Fangxu Rong,Xin Wang,Mengyang Dong,Kai Liu,Mingyue Li,Aiju Liu

Paddy soils are globally distributed and saturated with water long term, which is different from most terrestrial ecosystems. To better understand the environmental risks of antibiotics in paddy soils, this study chose sulfadiazine (SDZ) as a typical antibiotic. We investigated its adsorption behavior and the influence of soil solution properties, such as pH conditions, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), ionic concentrations (IC), and the co-existence of Cu2+. The results indicated that (1) changes in soil solution pH and IC lower the adsorption of SDZ in paddy soils. (2) Increase of DOC facilitated the adsorption of SDZ in paddy soils. (3) Cu2+co-existence increased the adsorption of SDZ on organic components, but decreased the adsorption capacity of clay soil for SDZ. (4) Further FTIR and SEM analyses indicated that complexation may not be the only form of Cu2+and SDZ co-adsorption in paddy soils. Based on the above results, it can be concluded that soil solution properties and co-existent cations determine the sorption behavior of SDZ in paddy soils.Keywords:sulfadiazine;Cu2+co-existence;paddy soils;adsorption;soil properties

Effects of zero-valent iron added in the flooding or drainage process on cadmium immobilization in an acid paddy soil

Hanbing Meng,Shiwen Hu,Zebin Hong,Wenting Chi,Guojun Chen,Kuan Cheng,Qi Wang,Tongxu Liu,Fangbai Li,Kexue Liu,Yang Yang

Zero-valent iron (ZVI) is a promising material for the remediation of Cd-contaminated paddy soils. However, the effects of ZVI added during flooding or drainage processes on cadmium (Cd) retention remain unclear. Herein, Cd-contaminated paddy soil was incubated for 40 days of flooding and then for 15 days of drainage, and the underlying mechanisms of Cd immobilization coupled with Fe/S/N redox processes were investigated. The addition of ZVI to the flooding process was more conducive to Cd immobilization. Less potential available Cd was detected by adding ZVI before flooding, which may be due to the increase in paddy soil pH and newly formed secondary Fe minerals. Moreover, the reductive dissolution of Fe minerals promoted the release of soil colloids, thereby increasing significantly the surface sites and causing Cd immobilization. Additionally, the addition of ZVI before flooding played a vital role in Cd retention after soil drainage. In contrast, the addition of ZVI in the drainage phase was not conducive to Cd retention, which might be due to the rapid decrease in soil pH that inhibited Cd adsorption and further immobilization on soil surfaces. The findings of this study demonstrated that Cd availability in paddy soil was largely reduced by adding ZVI during the flooding period and provide a novel insight into the mechanisms of ZVI remediation in Cd-contaminated paddy soils.

Arsenate Adsorption on Different Fractions of Iron Oxides in the Paddy Soil from the Karst Region of China

Zhang Liyang,Xiao Jian,Ji Junfeng,Liu Yuanyuan

Adsorption of arsenate, a common soil contaminant, on natural occurring iron oxides controls arsenate adsorption on soils, especially on iron rich soils. However, soils contain multiple iron minerals and their contributions for arsenate adsorption on the bulk soil are unclear. In this study, Wenzel’s sequential extraction procedure (SEP) was used to characterize different fractions of iron oxides in the paddy soils from Guangxi, China. Soils treated with different extractants in the SEP (i.e. soils contained different iron fractions) were used to study arsenate adsorption on different iron fractions in the soil. Langmuir model was used to assess arsenate adsorption capacities of those iron fractions. The results showed that though amorphous iron made up only 16% of the total iron in the soil, it accounted for 82% of the soil adsorption capacity. Besides, arsenate adsorption capacity on the soils could be estimated by linear addition of arsenate adsorption capacity on the amorphous iron oxides fraction and that on the other iron oxides fraction. This study implied a possibility to use iron fractions characterized by Wenzel’s SEP to evaluate arsenate adsorption on the bulk soils.

Rice root Fe plaque increases paddy soil CH4 emissions via the promotion of electron transfer for syntrophic methanogenesis

Jinzhi Yao,Minghui Xie,Linpeng Yu,Ting Liu,Tim J. Clough,Nicole Wrage-Mönnig,Jiafa Luo,Chunsheng Hu,Tida Ge,Shungui Zhou,Shuping Qin

Iron (Fe) plaque is a concentrated form of microbially available Fe oxide that coats rice plant root surfaces, representing a high density of Fe oxide and which potentially mediates paddy soil CH 4 emissions. Using a combination of methods including Fe plaque induction, isotopic labeling , pure microbial strains, and Fe oxide addition experiments, we investigated the impact of Fe plaque on methane (CH 4 ) emissions from paddy soils and explored the associated mechanisms underlying the influence of Fe plaque on CH 4 emissions. A 13 C–CH 4 isotopic labeling experiment showed that Fe plaque did not significantly affect CH 4 oxidation and associated gene expression, whereas Fe plaque significantly enriched methanogenic archaea and their expression of genes associated with methanogenesis. Pure microbial strain and Fe oxide addition experiments showed that the enhancement of CH 4 production in the presence of Fe plaque was caused by the (semi) conductive minerals within the Fe plaque, specifically, hematite , which promoted the extracellular electron transfer between the methanogenic archaea and their syntrophic bacteria, resulting in enhancement of methanogenesis. Our results imply that the presence of Fe plaque will accelerate CH 4 emissions from paddy soils and suppressing Fe plaque has the potential to mitigate CH 4 emissions.

Synergistic effect between biochar and nitrate fertilizer facilitated arsenic immobilization in an anaerobic contaminated paddy soil

Wenli Jia,Zhi Yu,Junfeng Chen,Jian Zhang,Jian Zhu,Wentao Yang,Ruidong Yang,Pan Wu,Shengsen Wang

Nitrate nitrogen fertilizer was usually used to mitigate arsenic (As) release and mobilization in the anaerobic contaminated paddy soil. However, the effect of the interplay between nitrate fertilizer and biochar on As availability as well as the involved mechanism were poorly understood. Herein, the effects and mechanisms of biochar, nitrate fertilizer, and biochar-based nitrate fertilizer on the availability of As in the contaminated paddy soil were investigated via a microcosm incubation experiment. Results indicated that the application of biochar-based nitrate fertilizer significantly lessened the available As concentration in the contaminated paddy soil from 3.01 ± 0.03 (control group) to 2.24 ± 0.08 mg kg −1 , which presented an immobilization efficiency of 26.6 % better than those of individual biochar (13.5 %) and nitrate fertilizer (17.6 %), exhibiting a synergistic effect. Moreover, the biochar-based nitrate fertilizer also facilitated the transformation of more toxic arsenite in the contaminated soil to less toxic arsenate. Further, biochar-based nitrate fertilizer increased soil redox potential (Eh), dissolved organic carbon, organic matter, and nitrate yet decreased soil pH and ammonium, which changed the microbial community in the soil, enhancing the relative abundance of Bacillus , Arthrobacter , and Paenibacillus . These functional microorganisms drove the coupled transformation between nitrate denitrification and Fe(II) or As(III) oxidation, favoring As immobilization in the anaerobic paddy soil. Additionally, the co-application of biochar offset the negative effect of single nitrate fertilizer on microbial community diversity. Overall, biochar-based nitrate fertilizer could be a promising candidate for the effective immobilization of As in the anaerobic paddy soil. The current research can provide a valuable reference to the remediation of As-contaminated paddy soil and the production of safe rice.

Visualization the fixation of cadmium on manganese dioxide in sulfur reduction environments

Liuyi Pan,Jiayi Wu,Rui Wang,Yuyao Zhang,Baoliang Chen,Xiaoying Zhu

Manganese oxides as common soil components were considered as an important sink for the cadmium pollution, which, however, would be affected by the reductive sulfide introduced during the flooding period of paddy soil . In this study, the phase transitions caused by the reactions among S 2- , MnO 2 and Cd 2+ were visualized by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The dissolution of MnO 2 was in-situ studied by AFM in the S 2- containing environments. Moreover, in the ternary system (S 2- , MnO 2 and Cd 2+ ), the pre-adsorption of Cd 2+ by the MnO 2 nanosheets would promote the subsequent precipitation of CdS on the surface of MnO 2 , while the pre-formed CdS nanoparticles in the aquatic phase would tend to suspense rather than precipitating on MnO 2 . The kinetic study results indicated that the CdS crystallite generation rate was faster than the MnO 2 dissolution rate in the aquatic environments with different sulfide contents. In the macroscopic Cd 2+ fixation test, the introduction of S 2- dramatically improved the fixation of the pre-adsorbed Cd 2+ on the MnO 2 nanosheets by forming the CdS precipitate. This study provided a fundamental understanding of the interactions among the S 2- , MnO 2 and Cd 2+ ternary system and shed light on the development of Cd pollution remediation methods for paddy soils.

Methanogenic response of paddy soils exposed to zinc oxide nanoparticles and sulfurized products

Minghao He,Rong Tang,Fengyi Guan,Weijie Peng,Jinrong Lu,Keyi Li,Lihua Zhou,Yujie Wang,Yong Yuan

The use of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) in agriculture is expanding, yet their effects on microbial ecology in flooded paddy soils remain unclear. This study examined the influence of ZnO NPs and their sulfide derivatives (S-ZnO NPs) on methane production in paddy soils. Results showed that ZnO NPs at a concentration of 1000 mg/kg significantly inhibited methane production by 28.97 % in an acid soil and by 26.83 % in an alkaline soil. S-ZnO NPs at the same concentration did not significantly affect methane production in the alkaline soil and increased it by 15.33 % in the acid soil. High-throughput sequencing revealed that ZnO NPs significantly altered the microbial community structure, affecting the prevalence of methanogenic organisms like Methanosarcina in the acid soil and Methanobacterium in the alkaline soil. Quantitative PCR analysis showed a reduction in the expression of methanogenic gene ( mcrA ) and total bacterial 16S rRNA genes with ZnO NPs exposure, but S-ZnO NPs had a lesser impact on these genes. This research highlights the more toxic impact of ZnO NPs compared to S-ZnO NPs on methane production and microbial communities in paddy soils, emphasizing the necessity for careful evaluation of nanoparticles in agricultural use to avoid ecological disturbances.

Environmental pseudotargeted metabolomics: A high throughput and wide coverage method for metabolic profiling of 1000-year paddy soil chronosequences

Kai Cai,Yongpeng Zhao,Zongjing Kang,Shuling Wang,Alan L. Wright,Xianjun Jiang

Pseudotargeted metabolomics is achieved by introducing an algorithm designed to choose ions for selected ion monitoring from identified metabolites. This method integrates the advantages of both untargeted and targeted metabolomics. In this study, environmental pseudotargeted metabolomics was established to analyze the soil metabolites, based on microwave assisted derivatization followed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis. The method development included the optimization of extraction factors and derivatization conditions, evaluation of silylation reagent types and matrix-dependent behaviors. Under the optimal conditions, the microwave oximation and silylation were completed in 5 min and 9 min. A total of 184 metabolites from 26 chemical classifications were identified in soil matrices. The method validation demonstrated excellent performance in terms of linearity (correlation coefficient > 0.99), repeatability (relative standard deviation ( RSD ) < 20 %), reproducibility ( RSD < 25 %), stability (relative difference < 10 % within 18 h), and sensitivity (16–110 times higher signal-to-noise ratio). This developed method was applied to characterize the metabolite compositions and metabolic profiling in a 1000-year paddy soil chronosequence . The relative abundance of trehalose was highest in 6-(40.3 %), 60-(55.8 %), 300-(67.7 %)and 1000-(61.7 %)years paddy soil, respectively, but long-chain fatty acids were most abundant in marine sediment (57.4 %). Forty-two characteristic metabolites were considered as primarily responsible for discriminating and characterizing the paddy soil chronosequences development and seven major metabolic pathways were altered. In addition, GC–MS metabolite profile presented better discriminating power in paddy soil ecosystem changes than phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs). Overall, environmental pseudotargeted metabolomics can provide a high throughout and wide coverage approach for performing metabolic profiling in the soil research.

Anaerobic Degradation of Dicamba via a Novel Catabolic Pathway by a Consortium Enriched from Deep Paddy Soil

Xuan Zhang,Ningning Wu,Zhuang Ke,Junyu Shi,Lin Wang,Cansheng Yuan,Jian He

Dicamba is widely used in the paddy field to control broadleaf weeds. Dicamba easily migrates to deep soil, which is anoxic; however, the anaerobic catabolism of dicamba in paddy soil is still unknown. In this study, an anaerobic dicamba-degrading consortium was enriched from deep paddy soil. The consortium completely degraded 0.83 mM dicamba within 7 days. Five metabolites were identified, one of which is a new metabolite, 2,5-dichlorophenol, and a novel anaerobic dicamba degradation pathway was proposed. 2.5 mM dicamba, 1.5–2.0% NaCl, and 20 mM electron acceptors Na2SO4, NaNO3, and FeCl3, and 0.5 mM or more of metabolites 3-CP and 2,5-DCP strongly inhibited the degradation efficiency. During enrichment, the microbial community of the consortium was significantly changed with OTU numbers, and diversity decreased. The study is valuable to elucidate the catabolism and ecotoxicology studies of dicamba in paddy soil and to facilitate the engineering application of anaerobic technology to treat dicamba-manufacturing wastewater.
