Aqueous rechargeable batteries (ARBs) based on migration of two types of shuttle ions not only enrich the battery families but also make it more available for ARBs with operation potential higher than 1.2 V. In this paper, we report on electrochemical properties of ARBs in configuration of NaTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C||LiMn 2 O 4 , i.e. NTP/C||LMO. NTP/C was prepared through a simple and scalable co-precipitation post annealing treatment method and featured with hierarchical structure, high specific surface area, and abundant mesopores. The electrochemical properties of individual anode and cathode were examined in 1 mol L −1 Li 2 SO 4 , 1 mol L −1 Na 2 SO 4 , and 0.5 mol L −1 Li 2 SO 4 /0.5 mol L −1 Na 2 SO 4 mixed electrolyte, respectively. It is found that NTP/C exhibits superior operation in 1 mol L −1 Na 2 SO 4 and inferior operation in 1 mol L −1 Li 2 SO 4 while the situation is contrary for LMO. However, NTP/C||LMO full cells with Li + /Na + -mixed electrolyte exhibit enhanced electrochemical performance, presenting an anode-dependant electrochemical behavior. When operating at 1C, NTP/C||LMO with Li + /Na + -mixed electrolyte can deliver a discharge specific capacity ( C dis ) of 104.6 mA h g −1 based on the weight of NTP/C, and a specific energy ( E cell ) of 59.5 W h kg −1 with corresponding specific power of 76.8 W kg −1 based on the total weight of active electrode materials. After 220 cycles at 1C, the C dis and E cell remain 75.7 mA h g −1 and 43.0 W h kg −1 , respectively.

Aqueous rechargeable batteries are the promising energy storge technology due to their safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness. Ammonium ion (NH 4 + ) is an ideal charge carrier for such batteries because of its small hydration radius and low molar mass. In this study, VO 2 · x H 2 O with rich oxygen defects (d-HVO) is designed and synthesized, and it exhibits unique nanoarray structure and good electrochemical performances for NH 4 + storge. Experimental and calculation results indicate that oxygen defects in d-HVO can enhance the conductivity and diffusion rate of NH 4 + , leading to improved electrochemical performances. The most significant improvement is observed in d-HVO with 2 mmol thiourea (d-HVO-2) (220 mAh·g −1 at 0.1 A·g −1 ), which has a moderate defect content. A full cell is assembled using d-HVO-2 as the anode and polyaniline (PANI) as the cathode, which shows excellent cycling stability with a capacity retention rate of 80% after 1000 cycles and outstanding power density up to 4540 W·kg −1 . Moreover, the flexible d-HVO-2∥PANI battery, based on quasi-solid electrolyte, shows excellent flexibility under different bending conditions. This study provides a new approach for designing and developing high-performance NH 4 + storage electrode materials.

Aqueous rechargeable batteries have promising application in large-scale energy storage owing to their cost-effective, eco-friendly, high safety and good electrochemical performance. An aqueous rechargeable hybrid sodium/zinc battery with Zn anode, Na 3 MnTi(PO 4 ) 3 cathode and 0.5 mol L -1 CH 3 COONa and Zn(CH 3 COO) 2 mixed electrolyte has been designed for the first time. The battery delivered a reversible and stable capacity of 95.0 mAh g −1 at 1.5 C for 50 cycles with a high and flat working voltage of 1.75 V vs. Zn 2+ /Zn. Impressively, the battery showed the excellent cycling performance and superior rate capability, which can be cycled at 10.0 C for 2000 cycles with a capacity retention of 93.6% and a reversible capacity of 55.6 mAh g −1 at 30.0 C. Meanwhile, the co-intercalation mechanism of hybrid Na + and Zn 2+ in the cathode is elucidated by cyclic voltammogram, ex-situ XRD, ex-situ XPS and Rietveld refinement analysis. This work gets insight into the charge/discharge processes of hybrid ions for NASICON-structured Na 3 MnTi(PO 4 ) 3 , providing a feasible way to design cost-effective, high safety and long-term aqueous rechargeable batteries.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries are regarded as one of the new promising rechargeable batteries. However, serious Zn dendrite growth causes short-circuit issues in the batteries. Herein, we report that arginine (Arg), a cationic surfactant electrolyte additive, can inhibit irregular and nonplanar dendrite growth and induce uniform Zn deposition. It shows a long cycle life (515 h) of Zn/Zn cells in the electrolyte containing Arg, which is ∼10 times longer than that of the electrolyte with no additive. The hydrolysis of Arg produces arginine cations (Arg+), which will be preferentially adsorbed on Zn dendrites due to the tip charge accumulation effect during the Zn plating process. Arg+ increases the overpotential for the nucleation of Zn dendrites and results in uniform Zn deposition. After about 350 cycles, the MnO2/Zn cell shows 84.59% capacity retention and 99.85% average Coulomb efficiency in the electrolyte with the additive. The low-cost and nontoxic electrolyte additive identified in this work provides a new pathway toward inducing regular Zn deposition morphology.

Graphical An aqueous Zn-based battery with a Berlin green cathode, a K/Zn hybrid electrolyte, and a zinc metal anode are developed. Owing to the rapid insertion and transportation of K ions in the cathode materials and the good compatibility of electrolytes to the metal anode, the hybrid battery delivers improved rate capability and cycle performance. : Aqueous rechargeable zinc-based batteries with the advantages of sustainability, safety, and low cost, are suitable for large-scale electrochemical energy storage applications. In this work, aqueous zinc-based batteries with low defect Berlin green (FeHCF) cathode, a hybrid zinc triflate and potassium triflate electrolyte, and zinc anodes are developed. In the hybrid electrolyte, the K + ions with the weak solvation effect and small electrostatic interaction are the dominant intercalation species in the FeHCF, resulting in the fast charge transfer process and rapid diffusion kinetics. The Zn 2+ ions stay at the surface rather than penetrate into the bulk phase. Thus, the hybrid batteries deliver a high specific capacity of 169.2 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 , excellent rate performance with 45.7 mAh g −1 at 6 A g −1 , and good long-term cyclability with a capacity retention of 57 % over 1000 cycles at 1 A g −1 . The results suggest using aqueous K/Zn hybrid electrolytes can improve the electrochemical performance of FeHCF.

K0.25V2O5 (KVO) and K0.25V2O5/graphene oxide (KVO/GO) have been successfully synthesized by a chemical coprecipitation method and a subsequent calcination process. The structure and morphology of KVO and KVO/GO were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The as-obtained vanadate and vanadate modified by GO materials were used as anodes with LiMn2O4 as a cathode and saturated LiNO3 as an electrolyte to assemble an aqueous rechargeable lithium-ion battery (ARLB). The cyclic voltammogram curves of both KVO and KVO/GO electrodes exhibited three pairs of redox peaks corresponding to charge/discharge platforms. We found that a small amount of graphene oxide added improved the electrochemical performance more significantly than excess graphene oxide. The as-prepared KVO/GO//LiMn2O4 could not only improve the initial discharge capacity but could also reduce the attenuation at a high current density. Furthermore, the ARLB with a KVO/GO anode exhibited an excellent rate performance and super long cycle life. These good electrochemical properties of this new ARLB system actually provided feasibility for application in large-scale power sources and energy storage devices.

Rechargeable aqueous Zn–MnO2 batteries using a mild electrolyte have attracted considerable interest because of their high output voltage, high safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, poor cycling stability remains a significant issue for their applications. Equally, the energy storage mechanism involved is still controversial thus far. Herein, porous polyfurfural/MnO2 (PFM) nanocomposites are prepared via a facile one-step method. When tested in a rechargeable aqueous Zn–MnO2 cell, the PFM nanocomposites deliver high specific capacity, considerable rate performance, and excellent long-term cyclic stability. Based on the experimental results, the role of the hydrated basic zinc sulfate layer being linked to the cycling stability of the aqueous rechargeable zinc-ion batteries is revealed. The mechanistic details of the insertion reaction based on the H+ ion storage mechanism are proposed, which plays a crucial role in maintaining the cycling performance of the rechargeable aqueous Zn–MnO2 cell. We expect that this work will provide an insight into the energy storage mechanism of MnO2 in aqueous systems and pave the way for the design of long-term cycling stable electrode materials for rechargeable aqueous Zn–MnO2 batteries.

Aqueous rechargeable batteries (ARBs) are generally safer than non-aqueous analogues, they are also less-expensive, and more friendly to the environment. However, the inherent disadvantage of the narrow electrochemical window of H 2 O seriously restricts the energy density and output voltage of ARBs, especially aqueous rechargeable Fe-based batteries. Herein, we introduce a new battery system: the anode contains C@Fe/Fe 2 O 3 composite, which is interfaced with an alkaline electrolyte; the cathode contains LiMn 2 O 4 in contact with a neutral electrolyte. A Li + -conducting membrane is carefully selected to decouple the electrode-electrolyte, which effectively widens the electrochemical window to above 2.65 V, thereby enables an aqueous rechargeable iron battery. Its average output voltage is 1.83 V and its energy density is 235.3 Wh/kg at 549 W/kg. In this work, we propose the energy storage mechanism with the aid of density functional theory (DFT). The calculated reduction potential of the anode agrees with the experimental value. Furthermore, this battery system demonstrates long cycle lifespan of approximately 2500 cycles at 2 A/g, corresponding to a capacity retention of 82.1%. These results are very far superior than those of mainstream aqueous rechargeable Fe-based batteries, which guarantee future investigation for storing electricity energy.
