Dynamics of copper and tetracyclines during composting of water hyacinth biomass amended with peat or pig manure

Lu Xin,Liu Lizhu,Fan Ruqin,Luo Jia,Yan Shaohua,Rengel Zed,Zhang Zhenhua

Composting is one of the post-treatment methods for phytoremediation plants. Due to a high potential of water hyacinth to accumulate pollutants, the physicochemical parameters, microbial activity as well as fates of copper (Cu) and tetracyclines (TCs) were investigated for the different amended water hyacinth biomass harvested from intensive livestock and poultry wastewater, including unamended water hyacinth (W), water hyacinth amended with peat (WP), and water hyacinth amended with pig manure (WPM) during the composting process. Pig manure application accelerated the composting process as evidenced by an increase of temperature, electrical conductivity (EC), NH 4 -N, as well as functional diversity of microbial communities compared to W and WP treatments. Composting process was slowed down by high Cu, but not by TCs. The addition of peat significantly increased the residual fraction of Cu, while pig manure addition increased available Cu concentration in the final compost. Cu could be effectively transformed into low available (oxidizable) and residual fractions after fermentation. In contrast, less than 0.5% of initial concentrations of TCs were determined at the end of 60-day composting for all treatments in the final composts. The dissipation of TCs was accelerated by the high Cu concentration during composting. Therefore, composting is an effective method for the post-treatment and resource utilization of phytoremediation plants containing Cu and/or TCs.

Performance and Mechanism of Functionalized Water Hyacinth Biochar for Adsorption and Removal of Benzotriazole and Lead in Water

Pengyang Bian,Qinqin Shao

In this paper, water hyacinth is used to prepare biochar (WBC). A biochar–aluminum–zinc-layered double hydroxide composite functional material (WL) is synthesized via a simple co-precipitation method which is used to adsorb and remove benzotriazole (BTA) and lead (Pb2+) in an aqueous solution. In particular, this research paper uses various characterization methods to analyze WL and to explore the adsorption performance and adsorption mechanism of WL on BTA and Pb2+in an aqueous solution through batch adsorption experiments combined with model fitting and spectroscopy techniques. The results indicate that the surface of WL contains a thick sheet-like structure with many wrinkles which would provide many adsorption sites for pollutants. At room temperature (25 °C), the maximum adsorption capacities of WL on BTA and Pb2+are 248.44 mg·g−1and 227.13 mg·g−1, respectively. In a binary system, during the process of using WL to adsorb BTA and Pb2+, compared with that in the absorption on Pb2+, WL shows a stronger affinity in the adsorption on BTA, and BTA would thus be preferred in the absorption process. The adsorption process of WL on BTA and Pb2+is spontaneous and is endothermic monolayer chemisorption. In addition, the adsorption of WL on BTA and Pb2+involves many mechanisms, but the main adsorption mechanisms are different. Among them, hydrogen bonding dominates the adsorption on BTA, while functional groups (C-O and C=O) complexation dominates the adsorption on Pb2+. When WL adsorbs BTA and Pb2+, the coexistence of cations (K+, Na+, and Ca2+) has a strong anti-interference ability, and WL can use a lower concentration of fulvic acid (FA) (<20 mg·L−1) to improve its adsorption performance. Last but not least, WL has a stable regenerative performance in a one-component system and a binary system, which indicates that WL has excellent potential for the remediation of BTA and Pb2+in water. Keywords:water hyacinth biochar;functional modification;adsorption;benzotriazole;lead

Biosorption of tetracycline onto dried alligator weed root: effect of solution chemistry and role of metal (hydr)oxides

Ding Yao Yao,Cui Hao,Chen Jian

Dried powder of alligator weed root (AWR), a promising biosorbent, was employed to remove tetracycline (TC) from aqueous solution, using acid-pretreated AWR (HAWR) for comparison. The effects of ionic strength, pH, and environmentally coexisting substances on the adsorption of TC on AWR were also investigated. The results indicated a negligible impact of ionic strength but a significant effect of solution pH on the adsorption, with apparent inhibition observed in relatively acidic or alkaline pH regions. The impact of coexisting substances on TC adsorption depended on the species and concentration of interfering components. The mechanism of desorption was explored using NaCl/MgCl 2 solution and cyclohexane–methanol mixture, revealing intense TC adsorption on the AWR surface. The biosorbent was characterized using various techniques, including inductively coupled plasma (ICP), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and zeta potential and N 2 adsorption/desorption analyses. The results of the ICP, SEM–EDS, and FTIR analyses indicated that metals including Mn, Fe, and Al were enriched mainly over the AWR surface with metal (hydr)oxide (MHO) morphology. When the MHOs were denuded by HCl solution pretreatment, the resulting HAWR totally lost the adsorption capability. Based on the nature of AWR and TC as well as the adsorption/desorption performance, MHOs over the AWR surface were verified to play an essential role in driving adsorption via surface complexation. Furthermore, MHO-based complexation provides a reliable explanation for the TC adsorption/desorption performance. The obtained results will aid adsorption mechanism elucidation and potential applications of such low-cost biosorbent.

Recycling application of waste long-root Eichhornia crassipes in the heavy metal removal using oxidized biochar derived as adsorbents

Sen Lin,Weiwei Huang,Hongjun Yang,Shuying Sun,Jianguo Yu

An oxidized biochar was prepared using long-root Eichhornia crassipes through an aerobic/anaerobic hybrid calcination to recycle its waste plants after eutrophic treatments. The adsorption performances of the biochar were investigated and the results showed that the adsorption equilibrium could arrive in 30 min and the adsorption capacities for Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ , Cd 2+ and Zn 2+ at 30 °C were 0.57, 0.41, 0.44 and 0.48 mmol/g, respectively. The adsorption could be promoted at higher pH and temperature and the adsorption tolerance for different heavy metal ions to the existence of competing ions and organic matters was hierarchical. The adsorption was deduced to be heterozygous courses and mainly controlled by complexation of oxygen-containing groups with these heavy metal ions. It was confirmed that the biochar could be regenerated with HCl solution and the adsorption performance kept consistent in 10 adsorption–desorption cycles.

Removal of aqueous fluoroquinolones with multi-functional activated carbon (MFAC) derived from recycled long-root Eichhornia crassipes: batch and column studies

Liu Lili,Chen Xin,Wang Zhiping,Lin Sen

Fluoroquinolones (FQs) occur broadly in natural media due to its extensive use, and it has systematic effects on our ecosystem and human immunity. In this study, long-root Eichhornia crassipes was reclaimed as a multi-functional activated carbon (MFAC) to remove fluoroquinolones (FQs) from contaminated water. To get insight into the adsorption mechanism, multiple measurements, including FTIR and XPS analyses, were employed to investigate the adsorption processes of ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin as well as the experiments of effect of exogenous factors on adsorption performances. The results confirmed that the adsorption of FQs by MFAC was mainly attributed to the electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bond interaction, and electronic-donor-acceptor (EDA) interaction. In addition, the kinetics and thermodynamics experiments demonstrated that the MFAC possessed great adsorption performance for FQs. According to the Langmuir model, the saturated adsorption capacities exceeded 145.0 mg/g and 135.1 mg/g for CIP and NOR at 303.15 K, respectively. The column experiments were conducted to explore the application performance of MFAC on the advanced treatment of synthetic water at different flow rates and bed depths. The adsorption capacity of CIP on MFAC was estimated by the Thomas models and the bed-depth service time (BDST) models, reaching 127.56 mg/g and 11,999.52 mg/L, respectively. These results also provide a valid approach for the resource recycling of the redundant long-root Eichhornia crassipes plants. Graphical abstract

Upgradation of water hyacinth for decontamination of uranium-containing radioactive wastewater with double environmental benefit

Jin Yu,Xu Zhang,Hai Wang,Longcheng Liu,Yushan Zhou,Chengtao Yue

Water hyacinth is recognized as one of the top ten invasive weeds that pose significant environmental hazards globally. The resourceful utilization of water hyacinth offers substantial ecological benefits. In this work, water hyacinth is employed to synthesize a phosphorylated biochar for the efficient decontamination of uranium-containing radioactive wastewater, thereby achieving dual environmental benefits. The biochar with a large specific surface area of 1328 m 2 /g and a large pore volume of 0.94 cm 3 /g is obtained via carbonization of a freeze-dried water hyacinth-phytic acid composite. It possesses a high density of uranophilic phosphoric acid groups, with the surface phosphorus content reaching 0.78 at%. As anticipated, phosphorylated biochar demonstrates superior adsorption performance for uranium (VI) ions. The removal efficiency achieves 99 % in a uranium solution with an initial concentration of 100 mg/L at a dosage of 1.0 g/L within 30 minutes, while the maximum adsorption capacity reaches 478 mg/g. It is proficient in removing uranium across a pH range of 2.2–6.6 and exhibits tolerance under high ionic strength conditions. The distribution coefficient for uranium attains 28.5 L/g, which is significantly higher than that of many other metal ions. Moreover, the biochar is readily regenerated by elution with diluted HNO₃ and reused up to five times without any loss of efficiency. Delightfully, phosphorylated biochar effectively reduces the uranium concentration in actual nuclear wastewater from 16 μg/L to below 4 μg/L. The effective adsorptive decontamination of radioactive wastewater, followed by the incineration of spent biochar, significantly reduces the volume of radioactive waste.

Magnetic biochar derived from Eichhornia crassipes for highly efficient Fenton-like degradation of antibiotics: Mechanism and contributions

Yunqiang Yi,Jiayi Luo,Zhanqiang Fang

The active components in biochar decrease markedly after hydrogen peroxide activation and the recycle of exhausted biochar is inconvenient, which hinder the application of biochar in advanced oxidation processes . In this study, magnetic biochar was successfully prepared using Eichhornia crassipes and iron salts via the impregnation-pyrolysis method. The efficiency of metronidazole degradation was 97.4% in the magnetic biochar/hydrogen peroxide system, which was approximately 28 times higher than that in the biochar/hydrogen peroxide system. Free radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance analyses demonstrated that metronidazole elimination in the magnetic biochar/hydrogen peroxide system was mainly attributable to hydroxyl radicals , and the contribution of hydroxyl radicals to metronidazole degradation was calculated to be approximately 84.0%. Hydrogen peroxide activation by persistent free radicals and functional groups in the magnetic biochar during metronidazole degradation was negligible. Moreover, Fe(II) in the magnetic biochar was found to play the key role in hydrogen peroxide activation, with its contribution to metronidazole degradation accounting for nearly 90.0%. This work provides a new method to utilize harvested E. crassipes to generate high-performance magnetic biochar that can be used for efficient elimination of antibiotics from aquatic environments.

A facile, green strategy to synthesize N/P self-doped, biomass-derived, hierarchical porous carbon from water hyacinth for efficient VOCs adsorption

Chenglong Yu,Junhui Dan,Zewei Liu,Jinliang Wang,Jiayang Wang,Hansun Fang,Fayin Lai,Danping Li,Lin Li,Fengying Li,Chunhuo Zhou,Bichun Huang

Carbon materials prepared using conventional strategies tend to have serious defects such as low porosity and a single pore structure, which compromise their VOC removal performance. Herein we report on a group of experimental porous carbons that were fabricated using water hyacinth (WH) as the starting material which is abundant in of N and P. The experimental results showed that the HWK-H prepared using a co-hydrothermal method exhibited the best performance in adsorbing methylbenzene with a saturated adsorption capacity of 624.7 mg/g. The results of several characterization tests revealed that HWK-H exhibited a high specific surface area (2199.9 m 2 /g), large pore volume (1.415 cm 3 /g), a specific micro/mesoporous structure, surface functional groups (mainly C = O, C-O and COOH), and a very disordered structure. All these properties were the reason for its superb methylbenzene adsorption performance. DFT calculations showed that the presence of N and P groups in the samples improved the energy of adsorption of the porous carbon materials for methylbenzene, thereby promoting its adsorption. GCMC simulation results also revealed that the carbon's micro/mesoporous pores in the range of 0.45–5.0 nm also facilitated the adsorption of methylbenzene. In addition, the multi-component co-adsorption performance and reusability of HWK-H were evaluated and the results showed that HWK-H offered good prospects for industrial application.

Endogenous calcium enriched hydrochar catalyst derived from water hyacinth for glucose isomerization

Luhan Yang,E. Shuang,Jianglong Liu,Kuichuan Sheng,Ximing Zhang

Water hyacinth is a major aquatic plant in ecological restoration which propagates rapidly, whereas its biomass waste lacks value-added utilization routes. To address this problem, we put forth an innovative two-step carbonization strategy to convert water hyacinth to catalyst for isomerization of glucose to fructose. Through combining the hydrothermal carbonization and pyrolysis , catalyst morphology including its carbon substrate and calcium salts was successfully engineered. The prepared hydrochar-based catalyst presented an outstanding catalytic performance, the optimal of which could obtain 31% fructose yield with 89% selectivity at 120 °C for 45 min in water and maintain the reactivity for at least three runs. The catalytic reactivity was derived from the crystallization of endogenous alkaline earth calcium in water hyacinth, which was comparable to catalysts doped with expensive metals. Besides, the equipment and energy requirements for preparation were quite low-demanding (calcined only at 400 °C for 1 h). This study not only pioneers a sustainable way to upcycle aquatic biomass, but also invents a low-cost and efficient catalyst for biorefinery through the production of engineered carbon.

Lin Li,Runkai Wang,Jiangyan Ji,Tong Wu,Dongdong Liu,Xinjian Hu,Fei Chai

This study presents an efficient extraction of nanocellulose crystals (CNCs) and nanofibers (CNFs) through ultrasound-assisted TEMPO oxidation method using deep-processed heavy metal-containing calabash as raw material. The extraction method, integrating TEMPO-mediated oxidation and ultrasound techniques, enhanced the yield of CNCs and CNFs. The results demonstrate that CNCs yielded 63 %, with a carboxyl content of 1.27 mmol/g, while CNFs yielded 31 %, with a carboxyl content of 1.21 mmol/g. CNCs and CNFs exhibited excellent mechanical properties, with CNCs having an average length of 214.4 nm, average diameter of 2.72 nm, and a length-to-diameter ratio of 78.8. CNFs had an average length of 437.8 nm, average diameter of 5.7 nm, and a length-to-diameter ratio of 76.8. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed crystallinity of 87.1 % for CNCs and 81.2 % for CNFs. The thermal stability of the fibers was confirmed up to 230℃. The film prepared by combining 10 % PVA with 90 % CNC exhibited a tensile strength of 32.11 MPa, Young's modulus of 2027.1 MPa, and could generate a maximum voltage of 0.83 V. This study provides an effective pathway for the value-added utilization of deep-processed calabash and highlights the broad application prospects of the composite film in the field of flexible sensors.

Efficient ORR catalyst: porous activated carbon prepared from water hyacinth with high N content

Zhu Zijian,Li Yang,Li Xiaofei,Qiu Huiming,Fang Lei,Zheng Lingcheng,Gao Juan,Zhu Guang

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is an important reaction process that occurs at the cathode of zinc-air batteries. An efficient reaction process is conducive to further research on sustainable energy devices. In order to improve the reaction speed, the ORR electrocatalyst containing uniform Fe–N-C sites in a porous carbon network similar to the shape of moth-eaten rotten wood was prepared using water hyacinth with a thin-layer structure inside as a template. Water hyacinth, plays a variety of synthetic functions in the construction of nanocatalysts, not only has a good enrichment effect on metal elements, but also is rich in N element. The doped Fe elements combine with the carbon and N elements of water hyacinth to form Fe–N-C active sites. The half-wave potential of SHL-Fe-HMNC is raised to 0.881 V (0.838 V for commercial 20wt% Pt/C) compared to the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). The power density of the liquid battery prepared based on SHL-Fe-HMNC reaches 110 mW·cm −2 (90 mW·cm −2 for 20 wt% Pt/C). Furthermore, the cycle time of ZABs exceeds 200 h. The flexible battery based on SHL-Fe-HMNC has a cycle stability of more than 10 h at a current of 10 mA·cm −2 , and the open circuit voltage (OCV) reaches 1.511 V. Graphical Abstract

Enhanced 2,4,6-trichlorophenol anaerobic degradation by Fe3O4 supported on water hyacinth biochar for triggering direct interspecies electron transfer and its use in coal gasification wastewater treatment

Haifeng Zhuang,Hao Zhu,Jin Zhang,Shengdao Shan,Chengran Fang,Haojie Tang,Qiaona Xie

Fe 3 O 4 supported on water hyacinth biochar (Fe 3 O 4 /WHB) was successfully used in anaerobic degradation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol and coal gasification wastewater (CGW). Chemical oxygen demand removal efficiency and methane production were significantly improved to 98.9% and 2.0 L with Fe 3 O 4 /WHB assisted. Fe 3 O 4 /WHB facilitated the conversion of CO 2 to methane and reduce H 2 production. A higher coenzyme F 420 concentration of 1.32 μmol/(g-mixed liquor volatile suspended solids) was found with the presence of Fe 3 O 4 /WHB, which might result in a faster conversion of acetate to methane. More interspecific signal molecules, lower diffusible signal factor, and higher mean particle size indicated that Fe 3 O 4 /WHB accelerated the sludge granulation process. Microbial community analysis revealed that enriched bacteria Geobacter along with archaea Methanothrix and Methanosarcina may be involved in direct interspecies electron transfer by Fe 3 O 4 /WHB stimulation, enhancing the performance of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol fermentation. It is shown that use of Fe 3 O 4 /WHB is feasible for enhanced CGW treatment.
