Gelatin is a versatile biopolymer for bio-packaging, but its poor water resistance and susceptibility to deterioration limit its application. This study addresses these limitations by forming a Schiff's base through crosslinking gelatin with dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) to enhance mechanical properties and water resistance. The crosslinking degree was investigated using the ninhydrin method and, also visually identified through a yellow-brown color formation. Crosslinking increased tensile strength (TS) from 30.2 ± 1.6 MPa to 37.3 ± 3.9 MPa and improved UV barrier properties, with a 30% increase in UV-B and UV-A protection compared to the pure gelatin film. Gallic acid (GA) was incorporated at concentrations ranging from 1% to 5% to improve the antimicrobial properties and shelf life of the film. Films with GA inhibited E. coli and S. aureus and resisted fungal growth on the film for more than 20 months. Furthermore, incorporation of GA further enhanced TS, elongation of break (EBA), barrier and hydrophobic properties of the composite film. The highest tensile strength was achieved with 3% GA (49.4 ± 4.5 MPa). EBA improved with higher GA concentrations, reaching a 44% improvement at 5% GA compared to the non-GA film. Oxygen permeability dropped from 5.7 ± 0.1 to 4.3 ± 0.1 cm 3 /m 2 d 0.1 MPa, and water vapor permeability decreased from 6.7 ± 0.75 × 10 −11 to 4.2 ± 0.07 × 10 −11 g m/m 2 s Pa at 5% GA. Despite these benefits, the films remained vulnerable to high acidic conditions. This study demonstrates that Schiff's base crosslinking of gelatin with DAC, combined with GA, results in durable, antibacterial bio-based packaging films with enhanced strength and barrier properties.

Nowadays, X-rays are playing increasingly important roles in daily life and industrial manufacture, which calls for effective and mobile shielding materials. However, it seems to be a paradox to prepare shielding materials simultaneously achieving excellent X-ray attenuation properties and superior mechanical strength. Here, an advanced leather-based X-ray shielding material containing bismuth and iodine (BiINP-LM) is prepared, and the stable and well-dispersed loading of high-Z element components is enabled by favorable interactions between bismuth iodide and leather, i.e., coordination, hydrogen bonds, and electrostatic attractions. A piece of BiINP-LM with 1.00 mm thickness displays an excellent X-ray attenuation efficiency of more than 90% in the photon energy range below 50 keV and 65% at 83 keV, which averagely exceeds ∼3% than that of the 0.25 mm lead plate and ∼5% than that of the 0.65 mm commercial lead apron. Additionally, the coordination between bismuth and leather provides an enhanced tensile and tear strength of ∼10-fold and 3-fold compared with the lead apron. It is worth mentioning that BiINP-LM also displays extra high water-vapor permeability, which is ∼50-fold more than the lead apron. Overall, this work opens up a new prospect for preparing advanced X-ray shielding materials with both excellent X-ray attenuation and outstanding physiomechanical performances.

The effect of 60 Co gamma ray irradiation on the physicochemical and crystalline properties of native corn starch were investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction showed that irradiation had a slight effect on the molecular structure of corn starch with crystallinity decreasing with increasing irradiation dose. Particle size analysis showed that 59.1% of native corn starch granules had sizes of ≥8 μm, which decreased to only 24.1% after treatment with an irradiation dose of 40 kGy. Irradiated-corn-starch films were prepared by casting gelatinized irradiated-corn-starch solutions. An increased irradiation dose was found to increase the tensile strength of the resultant films, but caused a significant decrease in water vapor permeability. The irradiated-corn-starch films showed potential for the development of biodegradable starch films with improved properties.

Intelligent breathable polyurethane (PU) that is easily allowable for vapor transmission at critical temperature would have significant implication for numerous applications; however, fabrication of such materials has proven to be tremendously challenging. Herein, we reported novel breathable polyurethane material covalently modified with carbon nanotubes (CNTs). When an optimal amount of CNTs (0.5 wt%) was added, the resultant PU film presented high waterproofness with hydrostatic pressure up to 10.9 kPa, as well as enhanced mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 22.2 kPa and elongation at break of 990%. This smart PU film has a significant increase in water vapor transmission rate between 18°C (1400 g/(m2·d)) and 38°C (3440 g/(m2·d)). The type of intelligent polyurethane material is a promising candidate for applications in areas such as protective clothing, separator media, and wearable electronics.

In order to study the impact of starch in film performance, high amylose corn starch was composited in gelatin films under different gelatinization conditions and, in high and low concentrations (10 and 50 wt.%). It was found that hot water gelatinized starch (Gel-Shw) increased film mechanical strength and was dependent upon the starch concentration. The addition of an alkali component to the starch significantly enhanced the swelling of the starch granules and expedited the gelatinization process. Incorporation of starch, especially the alkalized starch (Sha), into the gelatin films decreased film solubility which improved its water resistance and water vapor permeability (WVP). Multiple techniques (DSC, TGA , FT-IR, and XRD) were used to characterize the process and results, including the crosslinking of the dissolved starch molecules and the particles formed from gelatinized starch during retrogradation process, which played an important role in improving the thermal stability of the composited gelatin films. Overall, the starch-gelatin composition provides a potential approach to improve gelatin film performance and benefit its applications in the food industry.

Polyurea (PUA) is a type of protective coating material with excellent performance. However, the water vapor barrier property of PUA is not very ideal and need to be improved. In this study, PUA film was coated by polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) by casting of PVDC emulsion, to improve its water vapor barrier property. A polydopamine layer was introduced between the PUA and PVDC layers to provide good adhesion performance. The morphology, chemical structure and performance of the films were characterized by scanning electron microscope, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, water contact angle analysis, and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) tests. It is indicated that, with the thickness of the PVDC coating increasing, WVTR decreases almost linearly. When the thickness of the PVDC coating is 5.2 μm, WVTR is 12.58 g/m 2 ·day and water vapor permeability (WVP) is 1345.65 g·µm/m 2 ·day·kPa. The WVTR and WVP of PVDC coated PUA is greatly reduced by 74.3% and 73.9% respectively, compared to that of pure PUA film. The adhesion of the PVDC coating on the PUA surface was evaluated through the cross-cut testing method. It is shown that the adhesion is strong enough to resist the pasting and peeling by adhesive tape.

Electrospinning is a feasible technology to fabricate nanomaterials. However, the preparation of nanomaterials with controllable structures of microbeads and fine nanofibers is still a challenge, which hinders widespread applications of electrospun products. Herein, inspired by the micro/nanostructures of lotus leaves, we constructed a structured electrospun membrane with excellent comprehensive properties. First, micro/nanostructures of membranes with adjustable microbeads and nanofibers were fabricated on a large scale and quantitatively analyzed based on the controlling preparation, and their performances were systematically evaluated. The deformation of diverse polymeric solution droplets in the electrospinning process under varying electric fields was then simulated by molecular dynamic simulation. Finally, novel fibrous membranes with structured sublayers and controllable morphologies were designed, prepared, and compared. The achieved structured membranes demonstrate a high water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) > 17.5 kg/(m2 day), a good air permeability (AP) > 5 mL/s, a high water contact angle (WCA) up to 151°, and a high hydrostatic pressure of 623 mbar. The disclosed science and technology in this article can provide a feasible method to not only adjust micro/nanostructure fibers but also to design secondary multilayer structures. This research is believed to assist in promoting the diversified development of advanced fibrous membranes and intelligent protection.

In this work, we adopt “hyperthermal hydrogen-induced cross-linking (HHIC) technology” to fix an interfacial control layer of polyacrylic acid (PAA) on polylactic acid (PLA) to improve the adhesion and integrity of the permeation barrier film, and meanwhile, the HHIC treatment causes no measurable damage to the functional groups of PAA and PLA. Consequently, the oxygen transmission rate decreases from 150.00 to 0.50 ml m −2 day −1 (a reduction of 99.7%), which is less than one tenth of the best value reported, and that the water vapour transmission rate decreases from 32.93 to 16.25 g m −2 day −1 (a reduction of 50.7%), which is slightly higher than the best value reported (3.8% higher). Our work shows that the HHIC technology used in this study provides an efficient way to improve the oxygen and water vapour blocking ability of PLA and may help in improving the quality of other polymer heterointerfaces in the future.

Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) latex nanoparticles with proven interfacial activity were utilized to stabilize air–water interfaces of Pickering foams through interfacial interaction with hydrophobic fumed silica particles (SPs). The rheological properties of the Pickering foam were tailored through adjustment of their SP content, which influenced their formability and stability. A Pickering foam stabilized with WPU and SPs was used as a template to prepare a WPU–SP composite porous film. The as-prepared film had intact open-cell porous structures, which increased its water absorption and water-vapor permeability. The porous film was used as a middle layer in the preparation of synthetic leather via a four-step “drying method”. Compared with commercial synthetic leather, the lab-made synthetic leather with a middle layer made of the WPU–SP composite porous film exhibited a richer porous structure, acceptable wetting on a fabric substrate, a thicker porous layer, and higher water-vapor permeability. This work provides a novel and facile approach for preparing WPU–SP Pickering foams. Furthermore, the foams have the potential to function as a sustainable material for creating a porous-structured synthetic leather made from WPU, which may be utilized as an alternative to solvent-based synthetic leather.

Gelatin (GL) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) are common natural components for edible films, but their water barrier performance are finite as hydrophilic polymers. In this study, a GL/CMC water barrier film was prepared, characterized and applied. The microstructure results showed that complex coacervation at pH 2.0 and cross-linking effect of sodium benzoate resulted in strong interaction forces and dense structure of this film. Compared with pure GL or CMC film, this novel composite film decreased water vapor permeability by approximately 90%, and possessed applicable water solubility (51.5%) and stronger barrier to oxygen and UV light. Acidic environment and sodium benzoate endowed antibacterial activity. Furthermore, the water barrier coating film decreased water loss by 47.8% and improved overall quality of fresh strawberries stored at 25 °C for 6 d. Therefore, the novel water barrier film based on complex coacervation and cross-linking is promising to control the postharvest quality of perishable berries.

A promising approach to prevent heat- and cold-related illnesses is the integration of zero-energy input control technology into personal thermal management (PTM) systems while reducing energy consumption. However, achieving optimal wearing comfort while maintaining subambient metabolic temperatures using thermally regulating materials without an energy supply remains challenging. In this study, we provide a simple and reliable methodology to produce a phase-changeable metafabric made of thermoplastic polyurethane and phase change capsule (PCC) particles with high moisture permeability and thermal comfort. This approach skillfully incorporates spray-formed PCC particles into a three-dimensional nanofibrous aggregate, forming a stable self-entangled network structure in a single step through simultaneous humidity-assisted electrospraying and electrospinning processes. Additionally, the metafabric demonstrates prominent water resistance and superhydrophobicity, which are attributed to the integration of PCC particles and nanofibers, resulting in the formation of a microporous/nanoporous structure resembling the surface of a lotus leaf. As a result, the phase-changeable metafabric shows an active and passive thermal control performance, with a water vapor transmittance rate of 13.1 kg m–2 d–1 and a phase change enthalpy of 115.05 J g–1 even after 100 thermal cycles. Furthermore, it displays excellent waterproofing capability, characterized by a water contact angle of 158.7° and the ability to withstand a high hydrostatic pressure of 87 kPa. In addition, the metafabric exhibits a good mechanical performance, boasting a tensile strength of 10.5 MPa. Overall, the proposed economical metafabric is an exemplary candidate material for next-generation PTM systems.

Bio-macromolecule edible films, used as food packaging materials, are essential for maintaining freshness. Peach gum, rich in polysaccharides, exhibits excellent film-forming capabilities but lacks bacteriostatic properties. In this study, chitosan was incorporated into peach gum film as a bacteriostatic agent, and grass carp was utilized as a model to analyse the film’s antibacterial properties. Sensory evaluation, TVB, inhibition zone, and pH changes were analysed to assess the preservation effect of peach gum-chitosan films on grass carp. The impact of chitosan on the structural and physical properties of peach gum films was estimated. Consequently, chitosan was found to enhance the antibacterial properties and certain physical characteristics. Interestingly, with the addition of chitosan, the preservation efficacy improved; however, the water vapour permeability (WVP) of the peach gum films increased by 21.17%, and the structure became smoother. Thus, these findings will aid in the development of polysaccharide-based edible films and offer theoretical support for the packaging industry.
