Efficient and Stable Photoelectrochemical Seawater Splitting with TiO2@g-C3N4 Nanorod Arrays Decorated by Co-Pi

Yuangang Li,Rongrong Wang,Huajing Li,Xiaoliang Wei,Juan Feng,Kaiqiang Liu,Yongqiang Dang,Anning Zhou

Co-Pi decorated TiO2@graphitic carbon nitrides (g-C3N4) nanorod arrays (denoted as CCNRs) with different mass ratios of g-C3N4 have been constructed on the FTO substrate through three processes, hydrothermal growth, chemical bath deposition and electrodeposition. First, TiO2 nanorod arrays were grown onto a FTO substrate by a hydrothermal method. Second, g-C3N4 was coated onto the TiO2 nanorod arrays by immersing the above substrate with TiO2 nanorod arrays into a solution of urea and then heated at higher temperature. In this procedure, the amount of the g-C3N4 on the TiO2 nanorod arrays can be controlled by tuning the concentration of the urea solution. At last, Co-Pi were decorated on the surface of the TiO2@g-C3N4 by electrodeposition. The as-prepared CCNRs were characterized by XRD, FESEM, TEM, XPS, UV–vis, and FTIR, respectively, which illustrated that Co-Pi moieties were successfully decorated on the hybrid TiO2@g-C3N4 nanorod arrays. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) measurements have demonstrated that the prepared CCNRs serve as an efficient and stable photoanode for PEC seawater splitting. The photocurrent density reaches 1.6 mA/cm2 under 100 mW/cm2 (AM1.5G) light illumination at 1.23 V (RHE). More significantly, the CCNRs photoanode is quite stable during seawater splitting and the performance remain undiminished even after 10 h continuous illumination. Finally, a systematical photocatalytic mechanism of the Co-Pi decorated TiO2@g-C3N4 was proposed, and it can be considered as potential explanation of enhanced PEC performance.

CoV2O6 coupled with MXenes as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for water splitting

Yin Huang,Guangzheng Xu,Xiaoyu Huang,Hao Wu,Xiuhua Wang

For hydrogen evolution via overall water splitting, conveniently linked hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts are greatly sought. Thus, a three-step growth-conversion approach is used to create a particular type of Co2V2O6·2H2O/ZIF-L@MXene/NF in order to create a bifunctional water splitting catalyst. The strong coupling between Co2V2O6·2H2O/ZIF-L as a precursor to produce OER active species and a MXene that promotes mass/charge transfer greatly improves the performance of the catalyst. The as-prepared Co2V2O6·2H2O/ZIF-L@MXene/NF exhibits a low OER overpotential of 224 mV@50 mA cm−2, an HER overpotential of 98 mV@10 mA cm−2, and an overall water splitting overpotential of 1.478 mV@10 mA cm−2. To accomplish total water splitting, the electrolyser can also be powered by a solar cell (1.5 V). This research will help to create non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts that are effective and economical.

MoS2@CoFe-MOF catalysts achieved by one-pot hydrothermal synthesis enhanced electronic interactions between MoS2 nanoflowers and a bimetallic MOF for efficient oxygen evolution

Jiahui Li,Yufen Wang,Qinyuan Yu,Xuedong Wei

A kind of MoS2@CoFe-MOF electrocatalyst was prepared on carbon cloth by a one-pot hydrothermal method. Excellent electrocatalytic activity of MoS2@CoFe-MOF is demonstrated, and the catalyst has overpotentials of 220 mV and 405 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and 50 mA cm−2, respectively. It is found that the MoS2@CoFe-MOF electrode exhibits excellent stability at the end of operation for 48 000 s, and it has the highest electrochemically active specific surface area and the lowest charge transfer resistance. This work proposes a promising approach in energy chemistry for hydrogen production by electrolysis of water using electrocatalysts composed of non precious transition metal sulfides and bimetallic MOFs.

Mn-Doped Crystalline Ni3S2/Amorphous MoS2 Core–Shell Nanorods as Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Highly-Efficient Overall Water Splitting

Shaobo Ye,Zhentao Du,Zhengxiang Cai,Deliu Ou,Haonan Guo,Qiao Liu,Weiyou Yang,Qing Shi

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a typical earth-abundant material, is an excellent candidate for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which fundamentally rely on the regulation of the morphology and electronic structure of MoS2. Herein, Mn-doped amorphous MoS2 coated on Mn-doped crystalline Ni3S2 nanorods (Mn–Ni3S2@MoS2), rationally designed core–shell nanorods, have been fabricated via a facile one-step hydrothermal method as highly efficient bifunctional activities for HER and OER in alkaline solution. The target electrodes deliver a high current density of 100 mA cm–2 at a low overpotential of 187 and 310 mV for HER and OER, respectively, outperforming most MoS2-based catalysts. Moreover, a water-splitting cell based on the Mn–Ni3S2@MoS2 electrode requires a voltage of 1.45 V to reach a current density of 10 mA cm–2, which is superior to the state-of-the-art one of those based on noble metal Pt/C–NF∥RuO2–NF and non-noble metal catalysts. The overall enhanced bifunctional catalytic performance is mainly attributed to the abundant catalytically active sites provided by the Mn-doped amorphous MoS2 and the fast pathway for electron/proton transfer facilitated by the Mn-doped crystalline Ni3S2 nanorods. The incorporated Mn dopants and assembled Ni3S2/MoS2 heterostructure effectively regulate the electronic structure with redistributed charge within the core–shell Mn–Ni3S2@MoS2 electrode.

Mesoporous Ultrathin Cobalt Oxides Nanosheets Grown on Carbon Cloth as a High-Performance Electrode for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Jian Du,Chao Li,Xilong Wang,Xiaoyue Shi,Han-Pu Liang

Developing high-performance and low-cost electrode for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a crucial step to produce clean and sustainable energy sources. Herein, we report mesoporous ultrathin cobalt oxides nanosheets (∼7 nm) grown on carbon cloth (denoted as CoOx/CC) as an efficient electrode for water oxidation. The electrode was fabricated via a simple calcination of cobalt alkoxyacetate grown on carbon cloth under air atmosphere. The as-synthesized CoOx/CC electrode exhibited better electrocatalytic performance for OER in 1.0 M KOH, with lower overpotential of ∼263 mV at 10 mA cm–2, lower Tafel slope of 56.07 mV dec–1, and better stability, in comparison with commercial IrO2 and Co3O4 nanoparticles. Also, the OER performance of CoOx/CC-10 is among the best of the reported cobalt oxides electrocatalysts. Detailed characterizations reveal that the interaction between cobalt oxides and CC, unique 3D structures, ultrathin nature of nanosheets, high specific surface area, nanoporous structures, and fast electron transfer rate contributed to the enhanced catalytic activity. More importantly, the synthetic strategy applied here has great potential application in large-scale production of efficient electrodes in water splitting technology.

Enhanced Electrocatalytic Performance for Overall Water Splitting: Exploring Heterojunctions and Vacancy-Engineered Nanosheets

Dexin Yu,Yifan Zhang,Jun Wu,Feng Zhang,Fengyu Qu

This study presents a novel approach to enhance electrocatalytic performance for overall water splitting (OWS) through the strategic construction of distinct catalytic structures. We propose an in-situ transformation method that partly converts ultrathin two-dimensional zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) nanosheets into layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets, resulting in catalysts with tailored properties. The situ construction of 2D ZIF-67/CoNi LDHs heterojunctions with optimizes metal-oxygen bands and oxygen vacancies significantly increases the number of accessible catalytic active sites and enhances charge transport efficiency, the reaction intermediates are more easily adsorbed and desorbed during the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process. Characterization techniques, including polarization curves, The electrochemical active surface area (EASA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), reveal abundant accessible active sites and enhanced charge/mass transfer capabilities. Notably, the Co/Ni-LZ-24 NTs achieved an overpotential of only 80.50 mV for HER, while Co/Ni-LZ-36 NTs demonstrated the low overpotential of 289.59 mV for OER at a current density of 10 mA cm⁻² in 1.0 M KOH solution. Furthermore, the coupled catalyst system yields an impressive OWS performance, requiring a minimal cell voltage of 1.59 V at the same current density. This work underscores the importance of synergistic design principles in advancing efficient and sustainable OWS technologies.

CoO/NF nanowires promote hydrogen and oxygen production for overall water splitting in alkaline media

Shasha Zhu,Jinglei Lei,Lina Zhang,Jianxin He

The exploration of catalysts with high activity and low cost for water splitting is still necessary. Herein, a nanowire-like morphology CoO/NF electrode is synthesized using facile hydrothermal reaction and calcination treatment. The urea can regulate its morphology during the synthetic process of CoO/NF. Electrochemical studies reveal that the as-obtained CoO/NF exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance with overpotential of 307 mV at current density of 10 mA cm −2 and Tafel slope of 72 mV dec −1 for oxygen evolution reaction , and CoO/NF delivers current density of 10 mA cm −2 at overpotential of 224 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction . The results of the oxygen evolution reaction stability show that the overpotential of CoO/NF electrode is only increased by 4 mV at current density of 10 mA cm −2 . The two-electrode water splitting with CoO/NF electrodes as both anode and cathode needs a cell potential of 1.76 V to reach 10 mA cm −2 . Therefore, this simple method to prepare CoO/NF electrode can enhance the properties of electrocatalysts , which makes CoO/NF a promising material to replace noble metal-based catalysts.

Energy-Saving Electrochemical Hydrogen Production via Amorphous CoMoP/NF Bifunctional Catalyst Coupled with HMF Oxidation Reactions in Alkaline Electrolyte

Ao Dong,Chengyang Guo,Shuo Zhang,Yunjin Song,Junwei Ma,Xiaoyan Deng,Hongtao Gao

To improve water splitting efficiency and enhance energy utilization, it is crucial to develop catalysts with excellent activity, long-term stability, and low cost. In this study, we synthesized a three-dimensional nanostructured amorphous CoMoP/NF bifunctional catalyst for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation reaction (HMFOR), using a sacrificial template method. Benefiting from element doping regulation and morphology control, CoMoP/NF exhibited outstanding catalytic activity. Notably, in an electrolytic water system coupled with HER and HMFOR, a cell voltage of only 1.5 V was required at a current density of 20 mA cm−2, approximately 189 mV lower than that of a traditional water electrolysis system. This study presents a novel energy-saving method for hydrogen production through the HER/HMFOR electrolysis system.

Highly Active IrOx Nanoparticles/Black Si Electrode for Efficient Water Splitting with Conformal TiO2 Interface Engineering

Miao Kan,Xufang Qian,Taiyang Zhang,Dongting Yue,Yixin Zhao

Here we report a highly active electrochemical water splitting electrode fabricated from colloidal IrOx nanoparticles and nanoporous Si stabilized by conformal TiO2. The colloidal amorphous IrOx nanoparticles are highly active for oxygen evolution reaction. However, their application for water splitting has a dilemma that the traditional annealing process could lead to low activities but the nanoparticles based electrode without annealing usually exhibited low stability. This nanostructured water splitting electrode exhibited both the high activities as the colloidal IrOx nanoparticles and comparable stability as a traditional thermal annealing fabricated electrode. The impedance study revealed that conformal TiO2 significantly inhibits the interface oxidation and maintains the high activity of colloidal IrOx nanoparticles catalysts. The conformal TiO2 interface engineering combined with nanocatalysts would be a promising strategy to achieve balanced activities and stability for water splitting.

C-Doped KNbO3 single crystals for enhanced piezocatalytic intermediate water splitting

Jiaqing He,Feng Gao,Haowei Wang,Fangyan Liu,Jiahui Lin,Biao Wang,Chuan Liu,Feng Huang,Zhang Lin,Mengye Wang

H2O2 is an environmentally friendly chemical for wide water treatments and H2 is regarded as an ideal substitute for traditional fossil energy. The industrial production of H2O2 is via the anthraquinone oxidation process, which, however, consumes extensive energy and produces pollution. Herein, based on the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we report a green and sustainable piezocatalytic intermediate water splitting (IWS) process to simultaneously obtain H2O2 and H2 using C-doped KNbO3 nano single crystals as catalysts. The KNbO3 catalysts doped with suitable amounts of carbon show an enhanced water splitting rate, which could be attributed to the decreased reaction barriers on the C-KNbO3 surface and improved polarized built-in electric field, as evidenced by DFT simulations and PFM measurements. Remarkably, the piezocatalytic H2 evolution efficiency of 0.5 : 1 C-KNbO3 reaches 524.51 μmol g−1 h−1. Additionally, 0.5 : 1 C-KNbO3 could generate H2 and H2O2 simultaneously through two-electron piezocatalytic IWS reactions. This improved catalytic efficiency is attributed to the promoted piezo-response of KNbO3 after C doping, as revealed by PFM tests.

Heterostructural Ni3S2–Fe5Ni4S8 hybrids for efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Wu Yanyan,Li Ying,Lü Zhe,Xu Lingling,Wei Bo

Developing efficient and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts with non-noble elements is particularly urgent for electrochemical water splitting. Herein, we report heterostructural Ni 3 S 2 –Fe 5 Ni 4 S 8 hybrids directly grown on redox-NiFe foams (denoted as NFS/rNF) as excellent pre-catalysts for OER in 1 M KOH media. The electrochemical performance can be tuned by amount of sulfur source, and the optimized electrode only needs low overpotentials of 199 mV and 240 mV to attain 10 mA cm −2 and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively. Moreover, the overpotential is further reduced to 231 mV to deliver 100 mA cm −2 after multi-cyclic voltammogram scans, due to the exposure of abundant in situ generated Ni(Fe)OOH species. Excellent stability with continuous 40 h operation is also demonstrated. Our study provides a new strategy for direct synthesis of self-standing integrated hybrid electrodes for efficient and durable water oxidation.

Chemical looping steam reforming of methane over Ce-doped perovskites

Xianhua Zhang,Yinghui Su,Chunlei Pei,Zhi-Jian Zhao,Rui Liu,Jinlong Gong

Chemical looping steam reforming of methane (CL-SRM) has emerged as an attractive pathway on H 2 O splitting for H 2 production. However, this process still faces a major challenge in efficiently producing H 2 with high redox kinetics and yields. In this paper, the promoting effects of Ce 3+ substitution into LaFeO 3 redox catalysts on thermochemical H 2 O splitting as well as partial oxidation of methane are presented. An appropriate amount of Ce 3+ substitution in A site of LaFeO 3 (La 0.5 Ce 0.5 FeO 3 ) promotes the lattice oxygen conversion rate in methane partial oxidation step and boosts the reaction kinetics in H 2 O splitting step by enhancing the surface water activation and lattice oxygen mobility of the perovskite. In the CL-SRM process, the perovskite is reduced into Fe 0 /(La 0.5 Ce 0.5 ) 2 O 3 and Fe 0 /(La 0.5 Ce 0.5 )O 2- x phases in methane partial oxidation step and recovered to the original perovskite structure in H 2 O splitting step with simultaneous production of hydrogen, which maintains a reversible phase transformation during 100 redox cycles. As a result, the La 0.5 Ce 0.5 FeO 3 achieves high stability with the superior performance for syngas and hydrogen production. These findings provide the fundamental understanding on the synergy between the catalytic sites and enhanced lattice oxygen mobility for the promotion of H 2 O activation and hydrogen productivity in chemical looping process.
