Directional sweat transport window based on hydrophobic/hydrophilic Janus fabric enables continuous transfer and monitoring of sweat

Zicao Peng,Riping Liu,Zhiguang Xu,Huanjie Chi,Zhong Wang,Yan Zhao

Wearable sweat sensors are promising for non-invasive and real-time health monitoring but still confront notable challenges, such as the inaccuracy caused by sweat accumulation/evaporation in sensing area and the wear discomfort due to accumulated sweat and lack of breathability. In this work, we present an all-fabric-based sweat sensing platform based on a novel design of directional sweat transport window for continuous transfer and monitoring of sweat. The directional sweat transport window is built based on hydrophobic/hydrophilic Janus wettability on fabric's two sides, integrated in a highly hydrophobic cotton fabric, and sandwiched between hydrophilic cotton layers. Through the window, sweat collected by inner cotton layer from area in and around the window can be directionally and spontaneously transferred from hydrophobic side to hydrophilic side, even when the hydrophobic side faces downward, i.e., irrespective of gravity. The outer cotton layer serves to draw sweat away from hydrophilic side of directional sweat transport window through continuous evaporation, and thus also as reservoir for sweat residue. Fiber-shaped sensing electrodes were fixed on the hydrophobic side of directional sweat transport window. The directional sweat transport function reduces the time that the sweat remains in the sensing area, thus effectively avoiding the sweat accumulation and enhancing the sensing stability and accuracy, as well as the wear comfort. As a proof of concept, we demonstrated on-body, wireless monitoring of the sweat of a volunteer in physical exercise. Such a directional sweat transport window strategy also shows potential as a platform technology for other wearable applications.

Directional Sweat Transport and Breathable Sandwiched Electrodes for Electrocardiogram Monitoring System

Haizhou Huang,Nan Wu,Hui Liu,Yide Dong,Longxiang Han,Shu Wan,Guangbin Dou,Litao Sun

Device–body interface is significant for acquiring high quality bio-signals, preventing skin-irritation, and minimizing the motion artifacts. However, low breathability of the typical substrate used in a flexible electronic device usually deteriorates the stability of device–body interface, which is imperative for long-term application but commonly disregarded. In paper, a directional sweat transport and breathable electrode with three-layer sandwiched structure is reported. The top hydrophilic hydrolyzed-polyacrylonitrile (HPAN) layer and middle hydrophobic thermoplastic-polyurethane (TPU) layer form Janus structure; and the bottom layer is an electrode layer of Ag nanowires (AgNWs). This dedicatedly designed electrode can transport sweat from skin to the top HPAN layer, while keeping low noise electrocardiogram (ECG) signal detection. In the trial of ECG monitoring, the results show that the electrode can achieve reliable recording with high signal noise rate (SNR) both in calm state (10.5 dB) and sweaty state (10.1 dB) with sweat tolerance. No allergy or obvious SNR degeneration is observed when utilizing the electrode owing to the effective sweat transport away from the device–body interface rather than accumulation. Finally, the application of the anti-sweat accumulating electrode in wearable electronics is demonstrated.

Lun Han,Xu Wang,Bin Yu,Xiaoyuan Qin,Baocheng Liu,Xu Han,Huifen Yuan,Bin Yu,Zhiqi Zhao

Glucose is a key biomarker of diabetes, and effective glucose monitoring methods are crucial to the prevention and management of diabetes. Therefore, in this paper, Fe 3 O 4 /DEX/PDA@Au (Raman reporters) @Au nanocomposites were synthetized that with DTNB (5,5′-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic)), MMTA (2-mercapto-4-methyl-5-thiazole acetic acid), MBA (4-mercaptobenzoic acid) and 4-Mpy(4-Mercaptopyridine) were used separately as Raman reporters. Fe 3 O 4 and PDA (Polymerized dopamine) could supply more high surface area of active sites and high SERS (Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering) substrate, which has high stability and reproducibility. Dextran coating is an effective way to prepare biocompatible materials TEM, XRD, TG and VSM were used to analyze the size, morphology and magnetic properties of the nanocomposites. Fe 3 O 4 /DEX/PDA@Au(Raman reporters)@Au that integrates a multi-hotspot structure and magnetic separation techniques were studied the enhancement effect of Raman spectra, and glucose solutions with different concentrations were tested. Furthermore, the optimal Fe 3 O 4 /DEX/PDA@Au(Raman reporters)@Au nanocomposites were supplied as SERS substrates for detection of glucose accurately and quickly in sweat. SERS signal intensity is linearly correlated with glucose concentration within the measurement range of 5 × 10 -3 to 10 mM, and the minimum detectable concentration is 5 µM. The Fe 3 O 4 /DEX/PDA@Au(Raman reporters)@Au nanocomposites exhibit high reliability, specificity and repeatability of the strategy were then verified by practical detection of sweat.

Pumpless microfluidic sweat sensing yarn

Xinyue Guo,Qiangqiang Zhang,Chentian Zhang,Mingyue Mi,Xinxin Li,Xueping Zhang,Seeram Ramakrishna,Dongxiao Ji,Xiaohong Qin

Textile sweat sensors possess immense potential for non-invasive health monitoring. Rapid in-situ sweat capture and prevention of its evaporation are crucial for accurate and stable real-time monitoring. Herein, we introduce a unidirectional, pump-free microfluidic sweat management system to tackle this challenge. A nanofiber sheath layer on micrometer-scale sensing filaments enables this pumpless microfluidic design. Utilizing the capillary effect of the nanofibers allows for the swift capture of sweat, while the differential configuration of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties of the sheath and core yarns prevents sweat evaporation. The Laplace pressure difference between the cross-scale fibers facilitates the management system to ultimately expulse sweat. This results in microfluidic control of sweat without the need for external forces, resulting in rapid (<5 s), sensitive (19.8 nA μM −1 ), and stable (with signal noise and drift suppression) sweat detection. This yarn sensor can be easily integrated into various fabrics, enabling the creation of health monitoring smart garments. The garments maintain good monitoring performance even after 20 washes. This work provides a solution for designing smart yarns for high-precision, stable, and non-invasive health monitoring.

Sponge-inspired MXene@CeO2 detector for ultra-sensitive detection of glucose

S. Jiang,H. Zhang,Z. Li,L. Chen,L. Yin,X. Liu

Non-invasive sweat detectors can monitor the glucose level of diabetes in a painless way. However, most detectors need to collect enough sweat through external exercise or active stimulation, which increases the inconvenience of the user and reduces the applicable population. In this study, we propose an ultra-sensitive biomimetic glucose detector to detect the sweat produced by thermoregulation without additional exercise and stimulation. Inspired by the predator process of sponge in the sea, the sensing material of MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) @CeO 2 hydrogels employed the “laminae-trestle-laminae” (L-T-L) structure of sponge to adsorb and transport glucose molecules in sweat. CeO 2 grafted onto the MXene surface can detect glucose by the catalytic activity of CeO 2 . The glucose detector with an ultra-low limit of detection (LOD = 0.004 μM), excellent sensitivity (801.27 μA⋅μM − 1 ⋅cm − 2 ), and a broad linear detection range (LDR = 0.01–2.5 μM) can satisfy detection requirements in human sweat after dilution. In real applications, the detector can detect glucose in the sweat of diabetic patients for five consecutive days and detect the glucose content in the daily drinks of patients. Our findings demonstrate the high potential of sponge-inspired MXene@CeO 2 glucose detector for routine medical testing.

Machine learning-powered wearable interface for distinguishable and predictable sweat sensing

Zhongzeng Zhou,Xuecheng He,Jingyu Xiao,Jiuxiang Pan,Mengmeng Li,Tailin Xu,Xueji Zhang

The constrained resources on wearable devices pose a challenge in meeting the demands for comprehensive sensing information, and current wearable non-enzymatic sensors face difficulties in achieving specific detection in biofluids. To address this issue, we have developed a highly selective non-enzymatic sweat sensor that seamlessly integrates with machine learning, ensuring reliable sensing and physiological monitoring of sweat biomarkers during exercise. The sensor consists of two electrodes supported by a microsystem that incorporates signal processing and wireless communication. The device generates four explainable features that can be used to accurately predict tyrosine and tryptophan concentrations, as well as sweat pH. The reliability of this device has been validated through rigorous statistical analysis, and its performance has been tested in subjects with and without supplemental amino acid intake during cycling trials. Notably, a robust linear relationship has been identified between tryptophan and tyrosine concentrations in the collected samples, irrespective of the pH dimension. This innovative sensing platform is highly portable and has significant potential to advance the biomedical applications of non-enzymatic sensors. It can markedly improve accuracy while decreasing costs.

Sweat cortisol determination utilizing MXene and multi-walled carbon nanotube nanocomposite functionalized immunosensor

Liang Tian,Mengyuan Jiang,Mengjie Su,Xiaoqing Cao,Qiyu Jiang,Quan Liu,Chunmei Yu

In this work, a highly selective and sensitive cortisol immunosensor based on MXene and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MXene-MWCNTs) hybrid composite was proposed. The immunosensor was developed by screen printing technique on a flexible polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) substrate followed by modification of MXene-MWCNTs and anti-cortisol antibodies with EDC/NHS coupling agent. Owing to the large surface area and excellent conductivity of MXene-MWCNTs, the immunosensor exhibited a low detection limit and a wide linear range toward cortisol from 0.1 fg/mL to 1 µg/mL, which covered the normal range of free cortisol in sweat. Additionally, the immunosensor was applied to evaluate the cortisol level in human sweat samples, and the results were validated by a commercial chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA) assay. The present platform provides an effective method for non-invasive monitoring of human sweat cortisol levels, which may be well-suited for hormone screenings in healthy monitoring and medical diagnosis.

Wearable Microfluidic Sweat Chip for Detection of Sweat Glucose and pH in Long-Distance Running Exercise

Dong Liu,Zhenyu Liu,Shilun Feng,Zehang Gao,Ran Chen,Gaozhe Cai,Shengtai Bian

Traditional exercise training monitoring is based on invasive blood testing methods. As sweat can reveal abundant blood-related physiological information about health, wearable sweat sensors have received significant research attention and become increasingly popular in the field of exercise training monitoring. However, most of these sensors are used to measure physical indicators such as heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, etc., demanding a versatile sensor that can detect relevant biochemical indicators in body fluids. In this work, we proposed a wearable microfluidic sweat chip combined with smartphone image processing to realize non-invasive in situ analysis of epidermal sweat for sports practitioners. The polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based chip was modified with nonionic surfactants to ensure good hydrophilicity for the automatic collection of sweat. Besides, a simple, reliable, and low-cost paper-based sensor was prepared for high-performance sensing of glucose concentration and pH in sweat. Under optimized conditions, this proposed chip can detect glucose with low concentrations from 0.05 mM to 0.40 mM, with a pH range of 4.0 to 6.5 for human sweat. The ability of this microfluidic chip for human sweat analysis was demonstrated by dynamically tracking the changes in glucose concentration and pH in long-distance running subjects. Keywords:exercise monitoring;microfluidics;sweat analysis;glucose;pH

Smart Janus fabrics for one-way sweat sampling and skin-friendly colorimetric detection

Pengyu Xi,Xuecheng He,Chuan Fan,Qinglin Zhu,Zehua Li,Yuemeng Yang,Xin Du,Tailin Xu

Functionalized textiles with biofluid management capability have attracted tremendous attention in recent years due to their significant roles in health monitoring and dehydration prevention. Here we propose a one-way colorimetric sweat sampling and sensing system based on a Janus fabric using interfacial modification techniques. The opposite wettability of Janus fabric enables sweat to be quickly moved from the skin surface to the hydrophilic side and colorimetric patches. The unidirectional sweat-wicking performance of Janus fabric not only facilitates adequate sweat sampling but also inhibits the backflow of hydrated colorimetric regent from the assay patch toward the skin, eliminating potential epidermal contaminations. On this basis, visual and portable detection of sweat biomarkers including chloride, pH, and urea is also achieved. The results show that the true concentrations of chloride, pH, and urea in sweat are ∼10 mM, ∼7.2, and ∼10 mM, respectively. The detection limits of chloride and urea are 1.06 mM and 3.05 mM. This work bridges the gap between sweat sampling and a friendly epidermal microenvironment, providing a promising way for multifunctional textiles.

Graphdiyne marries PEDOT:PSS to form high-stable heterostructure from 2-unstable components toward ultra-low detection limit of uric acid detection in sweat

Li Yunpeng,Shi Zhuanzhuan,Wu Xiaoshuai,Miao Wenting,Yang Zhengyi,Lou Xinyu,Sun Wei,Guo Chunxian,Li Chang Ming

PEDOT:PSS has been used as a biomimetic uric acid (UA) sensor but suffers from unfortunate low detection limit (LOD), narrow detection range and poor stability. Herein, we get graphdiyne (GDY) marry PEDOT:PSS to create a very stable GDY@PEDOT:PSS heterostructure for a biomimetic UA sensor, which accomplishes the lowest LOD (6 nM), the widest detection range (0.03 μM-7 mM) and the longest stability (98.1% for 35 days) among the related UA sensors. The sensor was successfully used to in situ real-time detection of  UA in sweat. The enhancement mechanisms of the sensor were investigated, and results discover that C≡C of GDY and C = C of PEDOT:PSS can cross-link each other by π–π interactions, making not only the former strongly resistant against oxidation deterioration, but also causes the latter to efficiently prevent water swelling of polymer for poor conductivity, thereby leading to high stability from both components. While the stabilized heterostructure can also offer more active sites by enhanced absorption of UA via π-π interactions for highly sensitive detection of UA. This work holds great promise for a practical sweat UA sensor while providing scientific insight to design a stable and electrocatalytically active structure from two unstable components. A Self-Powered Wearable Sensor for Continuous Wireless Sweat Monitoring

Yansong Gai,Engui Wang,Minghao Liu,Lirong Xie,Yuan Bai,Yuan Yang,Jiangtao Xue,Xuecheng Qu,Yuan Xi,Linlin Li,Dan Luo,Zhou Li

Wireless wearable sweat analysis devices can monitor biomarkers at the molecular level continuously and in situ, which is highly desired for personalized health care. The miniaturization, integration, and wireless operation of sweat sensors improve the comfort and convenience while also bringing forward new challenges for power supply technology. Herein, a wireless self-powered wearable sweat analysis system (SWSAS) is designed that effectively converts the mechanical energy of human motion into electricity through hybrid nanogenerator modules (HNGMs). The HNGM shows stable output characteristics at low frequency with a current of 15 mA and a voltage of 60 V. Through real-time on-body sweat analysis powered by HNGM, the SWSAS is demonstrated to selectively monitor biomarkers (Na + and K + ) in sweat and wirelessly transmit the sensing data to the user interface via Bluetooth.

Breathable and sweat tolerance PPy-leather dry electrode for long-term electroencephalogram monitoring

Yuhan Zhao,Rui Zhang,Yunqing Liu,Feng Wang,Shi Hu,Fenghui Yang,Chao Tao,Qiong Wu,Baoli Zha,Jiansheng Wu,Fengwei Huo

The commonly employed wet and semi-dry electroencephalogram (EEG) electrodes require the use of conductive media, resulting in issues such as reduced comfort, detached conductive coatings, and limitations in long-term wearing. In this study, we present a user-friendly dry EEG electrode made from conductive leather for long-term EEG monitoring. The conductive leather was obtained by in-situ synthesis of polypyrrole inside the goat leather, which could be further used as an EEG electrode. When positioned on the forehead, the interface impedance between the leather electrode and human skin complied with the international standard for EEG electrodes. The material's exceptional breathability enabled prolonged electrode wear. These leather electrodes facilitated precise monitoring of eye movement signals and α-wave activities in a relaxed state, laying the groundwork for extending their application to other brain regions. Furthermore, leather electrodes exhibited excellent performance even in the presence of sweat interference, thus confirming their advantages for long-term EEG monitoring. The leather dry electrode featuring superior wearability, portability, and long-term stability is expected to bring significant implications for future wearable technologies and monitoring devices.
