Human sweat glands can response to hot environment and autonomously discharge perspiration, taking away heat through evaporation. This biological feedback can affect the external stimuli, that is, reduce skin temperature. Inspired by the sweat gland, a skin actuator based on liquid crystal elastomer was fabricated. Benefit by the inherent properties of LCE, the actuator has the advantages of fast response and autonomous response without electronics. The actuator is obtained by direct ink writing printing of LCE ink. The actuation performance of LCE filament is optimized by adjusting printing parameters. The printing path is designed to achieve complex actuating deformation of LCE actuator. Two printed LCE components are assembled to obtain LCE chamber actuator. The influence of LCE chamber actuator with different shapes on the discharging capability is characterized. Array the LCE chamber actuators to obtain LCE skin actuator which can respond to overheating and locally discharge liquid to control the surrounding temperature. Benefit from the advantages of LCE and the structural design, the skin actuator can realize temperature control, which can maintain its surrounding temperature about 10 ℃ below the heating temperature. This work demonstrates the new opportunities for applications in temperature monitoring and local overheating protection.

Fingerprints are unique characteristics of an individual; therefore, the imaging and recognition of latent fingerprints (LFPs) are a top-priority task in forensic science. Fast visualization of LFPs can greatly help policemen in screening potential criminal scenes and capturing fingerprint clues. Here, we developed a simple, rapid, easily performed method for nondestructive visualization of sebaceous LFPs using “silver imaging ink” as a new imaging moiety. In principle, when the ink dried at a proper temperature, in situ generation of dark silver nanoparticles on the fingerprint's furrow areas occurred and resulted in a negative image of the LFPs. Interestingly, the preparation of silver imaging ink and the visualization of LFPs were carried out in a short period time of no more than 10 min in total. Fingerprints on different nonporous surfaces and from different volunteers were detected successfully. Moreover, the level 2 and 3 substructures of the fingerprints could also be clearly identified. Thus, the present method opens a new avenue for LFP detection and will find wide-ranging applications in forensic investigations.

Directional water transport textiles are an energy-free approach to improving the comfort of the human body. However, existing strategies mainly focus on enhancing the capacity of directional water transport, complicating the preparation process and limiting the long-term durability of textiles. Herein, a skin-like fabric inspired by sweat glands was prepared in one step by patterning printed hydrophobic paste on the fabric. This skin-like fabric has achieved the desired one-way water transport index (R, 721%), air permeability of 104 mm s–1, and water vapor transmission rate (298 g m–2 h–1). More significantly, due to the strong chemical bonds between the fabric and the coating, the skin-like fabric exhibited a high weight retention of 99.4% after 400 abrasion cycles and stable performance (R, 658%) after 25 h of washing. This work proposes a reliable way to prepare high-performance fabrics with durability, which show great potential for applications in functional textiles for personal moisture management.

Fingerprints are unique characteristics of an individual, and their imaging and recognition is a top-priority task in forensic science. Fast LFP (latent fingerprint) acquirement can greatly help policemen in screening the potential criminal scenes and capturing fingerprint clues. Of the two major latent fingerprints (LFP), eccrine is expected to be more representative than sebaceous in LFP identification. Here we explored the heavy metal-free Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs) as a new imaging moiety for eccrine LFPs. To study the effects of different ligands on the LFP image quality, we prepared Mn-doped ZnS QDs with various surface-capping ligands using QDs synthesized in high-temperature organic media as starting material. The orange fluorescence emission from Mn-doped ZnS QDs clearly revealed the optical images of eccrine LFPs. Interestingly, N-acetyl-cysteine-capped Mn-doped ZnS QDs could stain the eccrine LFPs in as fast as 5 s. Meanwhile, the levels 2 and 3 substructures of the fingerprints could also be simultaneously and clearly identified. While in the absence of QDs or without rubbing and stamping the finger onto foil, no fluorescent fingerprint images could be visualized. Besides fresh fingerprint, aged (5, 10, and 50 days), incomplete eccrine LFPs could also be successfully stained with N-acetyl-cysteine-capped Mn-doped ZnS QDs, demonstrating the analytical potential of this method in real world applications. The method was also robust for imaging of eccrine LFPs on a series of nonporous surfaces, such as aluminum foil, compact discs, glass, and black plastic bags.

Background Nicastrin, a subunit of the γ-secretase complex, is encoded by the NCSTN gene and regulates notch signaling, it is involved in the pathogenesis of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), Alzheimer disease (AD), and liver cancer. However, the animal models for studying HS are relatively scarce. Methods CRISPR/Cas-mediated genetic engineering was used to generate targeted knockout offspring mice (C57BL/6J). Different doses (10 mg/kg, 20 mg/kg, and 30 mg/kg) and injection methods (subcutaneous/intraperitoneal/gavage injection) of tamoxifen were used to induce the construction of NCSTN knockout mice (mice model). The expressions of nicastrin, NICD1, hes1 in skin, brain, and liver tissue in mice model and wild-type (WT) mice were measured by qRT-PCR and IHC. Results The construction of mice model was successfully induced by tamoxifen, knockout efficiency was 93%, there was no difference in knockout efficiency among three doses, injection methods, genders ( P > 0.05). HS-like lesions appeared on the skin of NCSTN knockout mice after 1 month of treatment with tamoxifen, male mice had a higher number of skin lesions compared to female mice (male vs female = 76.5% vs 41.7%, P = 0.027). Compared with WT mice, the expressions of nicastrin (skin P = 0.0009, brain P = 0.0194, liver P = 0.0066), NICD1 (skin P = 0.0115, brain P = 0.0307, liver P = 0.008), hes1 (skin P = 0.0476, brain P = 0.0143, liver P = 0.0003) in mice model all decreased. Conclusions The NCSTN knockout mouse might be employed as HS animal model; Reducing nicastrin may affect the expression of notch1–hes1 pathway molecules in skin, brain, and liver tissues; low dose (10 mg/kg/d) tamoxifen could be used to induce the deletion of the target gene in mice.
