Efficient and Selective Immobilization and Direct Conversion of Mercury Into Optical Material-HgSe via Highly Active Trigonal Phase Selenium (t-Se)

Rihong Xiao,Jianping Yang,Yili Zhang,Zhuo Xiong,Junying Zhang,Yongchun Zhao

Industrial flue gas mercury emissions account for 30% of global atmospheric mercury emissions. While selenium-based materials show potential in reducing mercury emissions, the aspect of mercury recovery is neglected amidst the pressing need for mercury resources. Unlike conventional adsorbent regeneration cycles, elemental selenium anchoring mercury directly yields valuable by-products such as HgSe, a semiconductor with a narrow bandgap, considered ideal for optoelectronic devices. Amorphous selenium (α-Se) exhibits high mercury removal efficiency at room temperature but converts to less active trigonal selenium (t-Se) in high-temperature industrial flue gas. The literature on the mercury removal behavior of t-Se is limited. To address this issue, rod-shaped selenium (Se-rod) with specific exposed active crystal facets (101) and vacancy defects is synthesized, achieving an exceptional mercury adsorption capacity of 430.10 mg g −1 . Moreover, the optical performance of self-produced HgSe surpasses those of commercial samples. Se-rod can be utilized for mercury removal while also bridging the gap in mercury resource supply.

Magnetically recyclable Fe3O4 doped flower-like MoS2: Efficient removal of elemental mercury

Ping He,Xinyi Zhao,Fei Luo,Yi Zhang,Jie Wei,Tianhong Xu,Jiang Wu,Naichao Chen

At the front end of the Electrostatic precipitator (ESP), activated carbon injection is a common method to remove mercury from flue gas, but the high cost, low efficiency and non-recyclability limit the practical application of activated carbon. MoS 2 , a transition metal sulfide with a two-dimensional layered structure, was found to have favourable performances in removing contaminant. In this work, Fe 3 O 4 was successfully grown on the surface of flower-like MoS 2 by two-steps hydrothermal methods. The experimental results showed that the specific surface area of MoS 2 /Fe 3 O 4 (MF) was the largest when the ratio is 10 wt% (MF-10). Compared with pure MoS 2 , the specific surface area of MF-10 increased by 6.7467 m 2 /g, which was attributed to the growth of Fe 3 O 4 . At the same time, the introduction of Fe 3 O 4 made the MF possess superparamagnetism to facilitate its retrievability under an external magnetic field. In addition, MF-10 also showed a mercury removal efficiency of almost 100%. Although the efficiency of the MF-10 has decreased after 5 cycles and 24 h, it could still maintain about 90%, revealing a stable cycle life. Due to its mercury removal performance and recyclability, MF can be considered as a favorable adsorbent for removing elemental mercury.

Effective Capture and Immobilization of Hg0 from Flue Gas Using a Novel Selenium-Functionalized SrFeO3-δ/HNTs Half-Metal Composite: Adsorption, Photocatalytic Oxidation, and Mechanism

Xue-Lei Duan,Yuan-Ming Cao,Chong Gao,Sheng-Li Niu,Yi-Wen Shen,Qi Guo,Jiao-Jiao Xie,Kai-Qiang He,Chun-Gang Yuan

One novel/multifunctional selenium-doped SrFeO3-δ/HNTs composite was fabricated and used for immobilization of gaseous mercury. The composite showed excellent performances for Hg0 removal via adsorption coupled with photocatalytic oxidation in visible-light conditions. The adsorption capacity of 4271.15 μg·g–1, rate of 5.0 μg·g–1·min–1, and removal efficiency of ∼100% were obtained under N2+O2, which was further confirmed by reaction kinetics. SrFeO3-δ was selenized into iron diselenide and a Se–Fe bond with high affinity toward Hg0. In addition, the yielding of •O2– and the separation of photoexcited electrons and holes (h+) promoted the photocatalytic oxidation of mercury. The composite with intrinsic magnetism could be easily recycled for reuse by magnetic separation. Moreover, the composite possessed favorable tolerance to the complicated flue gas. An online lab-built thermal decomposition system demonstrated that the immobilized Hg was primarily HgSe, which exhibited very high stability and low toxicity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations proved that the composite was half metal with magnetism, indicating that Hg on Se-SrFeO3-δ/HNTs formed the stable structure releasing 1.055 eV. The doping of selenium promoted the charge transfer between O (2p) and Hg (6s), which also favored Hg0 removal. Se-SrFeO3-δ/HNTs with recyclability possess great potentials for Hg0 efficient removal and immobilization/detoxification from flue gas.

Effect of Ce and La on the activity of CuO/ZSM-5 and MnOx/ZSM-5 composites for elemental mercury removal at low temperature

Dongjing Liu,Weiguo Zhou,Jiang Wu

CuO-based and MnO x -based sorbents modified with Ce and La using sol-gel method, were employed for elemental mercury removal at 120–240   °C. The Hg 0 removal activity of Mn 2 O 3 /ZSM-5 can be significantly enhanced by doping 50   at.% Ce or 10   at.% La, the Hg 0 removal efficiency increased by 94% and 71%, respectively. The Hg 0 removal ability of CuO/ZSM-5 subtly improved by addition of 50   at.% Ce or 10   at.% La, the Hg 0 removal efficiency ascended only by 6% and 18%, respectively. The XPS results revealed that Hg 0 transformed to HgO, and CuO (or Mn 2 O 3 ) was reduced to Cu 2 O (or Mn 3 O 4 ), which is in agreement with Mars-Maessen mechanism.

Enhanced La0.875Ce0.125CoO3 catalyst for Hg0 removal from low-temperature flue gas: H2O and SO2 resistance performance and mechanism

Jie Gao,Zijun Ran,Jingyu Ran,Xin Huang,Chuan Ma,Yunlin Shao

The catalysts utilized for low-temperature catalytic oxidation of Hg 0 from flue gas typically suffer from issues related to H 2 O and SO 2 poisoning. This study focused on doping modification of La 0.875 Ce 0.125 CoO 3 perovskite with promoters and conducted a thorough investigation on the H 2 O and SO 2 resistance through characterization and DFT methods. Experimental results demonstrated that the LCeCO/30 wt% ZrO 2 possessed optimal H 2 O and SO 2 resistance. Under high sulfur (1500 ppm SO 2 ) and high humidity (10 % H 2 O(g)) conditions, it maintained approximately 91 % Hg 0 removal efficiency after thermal regeneration cycles. Characterization results indicated that ZrO 2 doping facilitated the formation of three-dimensional macroporous structure and protected active Co 3+ sites on the surface. Based on DFT calculations, the H 2 O poisoning is attributed to competitive adsorption between H 2 O(g) and Hg 0 on the active sites. Also, the SO 2 poisoning occurs due to competitive adsorption of SO 2 and the toxicity of sulfates to the surface active sites. Meanwhile, ZrO 2 doping can lower the adsorption energies of H 2 O(g) and SO 2 by modifying their adsorption configuration, thus weakening the competitive adsorption of H 2 O(g) and SO 2 with Hg 0 . Overall, LCeCO/ZrO 2 is a promising Hg 0 removal catalyst with superior H 2 O and SO 2 resistance.

Syngas mercury removal using LaMeOx/ZSM-5 sorbents: Mechanistic insights and performance tests under industrial conditions

Guopei Zhang,Cong Wang,Xiaoyang Zhang,Yong Dong,Zhaomin Li,Leteng Lin

Effective elemental mercury (Hg 0 ) removal from syngas is essential for industrial mercury control. This study synthesized LaMeO x /ZSM-5 (Me = Zn, Cu, and Fe) sorbents via the sol–gel method and evaluated their Hg⁰ removal performance for simulated syngas at 50–250 °C. The physico-chemical properties of samples were characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), H 2 temperature-programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). La 2 CuO 4 /ZSM-5 demonstrated superior efficiency (≥95 %) at 50–200 °C under simulated syngas, attributed to its porous structure and abundant surface-active oxygen. H 2 S significantly enhanced Hg 0 removal by forming active sulfur species, while H 2 , CO, and H 2 O inhibited performance due to competition for active sites. The inhibitory effects were mitigated by adding 500 ppm H 2 S. XPS and TPD analyses revealed HgS (cinnabar) as the dominant mercury species, with Cu 2+ ions and active oxygen critical for Hg 0 capture. Stability tests confirmed excellent reusability, with over 88 % efficiency maintained after 10 adsorption-regeneration cycles. La 2 CuO 4 /ZSM-5 emerges as a promising sorbent for Hg 0 removal, offering high efficiency, stability, and resistance to syngas components, making it suitable for industrial applications.

Experimental and theoretical investigations on H2S-enhanced elemental mercury adsorption over the La2CuO4/ZSM-5 sorbent

Guopei Zhang,Cong Wang,Xiaoyang Zhang,Yong Dong,Zhaomin Li,Leteng Lin

A novel Cu 2 LaO 4 /ZSM-5 sorbent was synthesized using the sol–gel method, and the role of H 2 S in enhancing Hg⁰ removal was investigated through experimental and theoretical approaches. Mercury removal performance was evaluated in a fixed-bed reactor under simulated syngas conditions, revealing that H 2 S significantly promoted removal efficiency, achieving 95.6 % at 200 °C. In contrast, H 2 and CO inhibited Hg 0 removal by depleting surface oxygen species. The addition of H 2 S mitigated these effects, facilitating Hg 0 adsorption and oxidation via a Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanism. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed strong chemisorption of Hg 0 and H 2 S on the Cu 2 LaO 4 surface, with adsorption energies of −123.71 kJ/mol and −168.98 kJ/mol, respectively. The reaction to form HgS had a manageable energy barrier of 25.80 kJ/mol and an exothermic enthalpy of −196.82 kJ/mol, with HgS formation as the rate-limiting step. This study highlights the effectiveness of Cu 2 LaO 4 /ZSM-5 for mercury capture and its potential application in industrial syngas purification.

Multiscale Investigation of 3D Morphology SnSe2 for Mercury Removal from Flue Gas: Experimental and Simulation Studies

Rihong Xiao,Yili Zhang,Kaiyan Long,Zhuo Xiong,Junying Zhang,Yongchun Zhao

Mercury, a toxic heavy metal, poses significant risks to human health. Coal-fired power plants are the largest anthropogenic sources of mercury emissions, making mercury removal from flue gas imperative. Among various mercury adsorbents, metal selenides show promising potential in mercury capture. Here, we reported the synthesis of a novel three-dimensional hierarchical flower-like material, SnSe2, and its debut application in flue gas mercury capture. Under the influence of low-coordinated selenium, the introduction of abundant selenium vacancy defects led to the exposure of additional active sites in the adsorbent. Additionally, the presence of Sn enhanced gas selectivity and promoted electron transfer processes, thereby augmenting Hg0 adsorption and oxidation performance. Benefiting from these advantages, SnSe2 exhibited superior mercury removal performance over a wide temperature range (30–180 °C), with a saturated mercury adsorption capacity of 2027.23 μg/g, surpassing that of commercial activated carbon. Furthermore, the presence of NO in flue gas improved mercury adsorption performance, while high concentrations of SO2 do not affect mercury removal efficiency, as elucidated by adsorption kinetics models. Moreover, the mercury adsorption mechanism was demonstrated through mercury temperature-programmed desorption (Hg-TPD) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Finally, toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) experiments confirmed SnSe2 as an efficient and permanent adsorbent for mercury, offering insights into the application of novel mercury removal materials.

Optimizing removal of elemental mercury from flue gas using halide-impregnated red mud

Muhammad Sarfraz,Yang Li,He Yang,Lijun Jin,Haoquan Hu

Mercury (Hg 0 ) emission from coal-fired industrial plants poses severe threats to ecosystem sustainability and human health, urging the development of novel and cost-effective adsorbents to treat industrial flue gas. Herein, the modification of industrial residual red mud (RM) through the impregnation of hydrogen halides (HH) and its adsorption characteristics for removing elemental mercury from combustion flue gas was reported. Experimental investigation of HH-modified RM reveals that the hydrogen iodide (HI)-modified RM with a concentration of 1.5 M had a maximum Hg 0 removal efficiency of 98%, whereas hydrogen bromide (HBr) 1.5 M modified RM had a maximum Hg 0 removal efficiency of 90%. The effect of various parameters, such as reaction temperature and halide concentrations, were also found to be influential for the adsorption efficiency of the modified RM. Moreover, it is important to highlight the chemisorption characteristics of HI-modified RM, which significantly enhances the efficiency of the removal process. The Hg 0 removal efficiency increases with the increase in HI concentration (1.5 M @ 93%) with an optimal reaction temperature of 140°C. Furthermore, the maximum Hg 0 removal attained with a change in NO concentration was 98% at 200 ppm. However, increasing the SO 2 concentration reduces the efficiency of RM for removing Hg 0 in simulated coal combustion flue gas. The pseudo-second-order model ( R 2 = 0.98) accurately describes the adsorption of in kinetic investigations, indicating a chemisorption mechanism. This analysis of the chemisorption mechanism highlights the efficiency of halide-modified industrial solid waste, which has the potential to be used in the design of economical and innovative adsorbents for reducing environmental pollution. The present study employed specific reaction parameters such as reaction temperature, halide loading contents, and different flue gas compositions, which had not been extensively explored.

Combined effects of Ag and UiO-66 for removal of elemental mercury from flue gas

Songjian Zhao,Dongyao chen,Haomiao Xu,Jian mei,Zan Qu,Ping Liu,Yong Cui,Naiqiang Yan

The zirconium metal-organic framework material UiO-66 was doped with Ag nanoparticles and investigated for the removal of elemental mercury (Hg 0 ) in flue gas . Physical and chemical characterization of the adsorbents showed that adding Ag did not change the crystal structure and morphology of the UiO-66. Ag doping can improve the redox activity of UiO-66, and the adsorbent exhibited high thermal stability and surface area. Hg 0 removal experiments indicated that UiO-66 exhibited the higher performance compared with P25 and activated carbon, and the addition of Ag exhibited a significant synergistic effect with the UiO-66, which had highest Hg 0 adsorption capacity (3.7 mg/g) at 50 °C. Furthermore, the Hg 0 removal mechanism was investigated, revealing that Hg 0 is removed by the formation of an Ag amalgam and channel adsorption at low temperature, and through Ag-activated oxygen oxidation and channel capture at high temperature.

Elemental mercury removal by copper-containing brominated pyrolytic chars derived from waste printed circuit boards

Gan Wan,Tao Chen,Linlin Xu,Lushi Sun

Waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) containing brominated flame retardants (BFRs) would result in serious environmental pollution without pertinent treatments. However, bromine-containing materials have been proven highly efficient for elemental mercury removal (Hg 0 ). This work proposes a win–win strategy of a cost-effective Hg 0 removal method and a highly efficient utilization of WPCB-derived chars. Diverse copper-containing brominated pyrolytic chars of WPCBs were prepared in a fixed bed reactor at 500–700 °C tailored for Hg 0 removal from coal-fired flue gas. The resulting copper-containing pyrolytic chars were proven to have a high Hg 0 removal efficiency. Various characterizations and adsorption curves insights into the impacts of copper, sorbent weights, pyrolysis and adsorption temperatures, on Hg 0 removal efficiency of WPCB-derived chars. The results indicate that copper in WPCBs enhances the fixation of the bromine elements in pyrolytic chars, resulting in improved Hg 0 removal performance. The optimal pyrolysis and adsorption temperatures for pyrolytic chars are 600 °C and 140 °C, respectively. Under optimized conditions, a Hg 0 removal efficiency exceeding 90 % is realized after 30 min of adsorption. Notably, the results indicating the Hg 0 adsorption capacity of WPCB-derived chars rivals that of commercial activated carbons and significantly surpasses that of biochar. Both adsorption kinetics and characterizations affirm that chemisorption is the predominant adsorption method. The C-Br bond and CuO emerge as crucial active sites facilitating the oxidation of Hg 0 .

Controlling morphology and doping tungsten to regulate sulfur species on molybdenum disulfide for removing Hg0 from flue gas

Yongpeng Ma,Jianghui Du,Haobing Yan,Chaobin Shi

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is considered a favorable absorbent for removing heavy metals. However, due to its various morphologies, MoS2 exhibits significant differences in its performance for removing mercury from flue gas. In the present study, the flower-like, spherical MoS2 and W-MoS2 were prepared by regulating the interlayer spacing and doping tungsten (W) in MoS2 for removing gaseous mercury (Hg0). The results show that the number of active sulfur sites (S2- and S22-) was critical to the adsorption performance of MoS2 for Hg0. The flower-like MoS2 demonstrated optimum properties below 125°C which attributed to the presence of dominated S2- sites, while spherical MoS2 and W-MoS2 showed a wider application temperature range (up to 175°C) during Hg0 removal which attributed to the unsaturated sulfur S22- and active oxygen. In terms of the mechanism, Hg0 is directly inserted into the Mo-S bond of MoS2 to form a transition state [Hg·Mo]-S, and then the original Mo-S is interrupted to form a new β-Hg-S bond, or combine with surface oxidation to form HgO. The oxygen in the flue gas can supplement the surface active oxygen on the MoS2, which enables the circulation of Mo5+. Hg0 also reacted with S22- to form α-HgS.
