Vegetable Houttuynia cordata Thunb. as an important human mercury exposure route in Kaiyang county, Guizhou province, SW China

Qingfeng Wang,Zhonggen Li,Xinbing Feng,Xinyu Li,Dan Wang,Guangyi Sun,Huihui Peng

Consumption of mercury (Hg) contaminated vegetable is one important pathway of Hg expose to humans. In this study, Hg contents in a popular vegetable, Houttuynia cordata Thunb. ( HCT ), and its growing soils in Kaiyang county in Guizhou province of southwest China were investigated. Health risk related to Hg exposure through consumption of this vegetable was evaluated for the first time. Hg contents in HCT were found to be much higher in three towns in western Kaiyang county (42.3 ± 48.2 μg/kg, FW), where former Hg mines located, than that in other towns (7.6 ± 5.0 μg/kg, FW). Hg contents in HCT were also higher than in the other five vegetables (Chinese cabbage, Lettuce, Tomato, Carrot and White radish). Consumption of HCT may account for 37.4–61.1% of total vegetable Hg intake of local people in Kaiyang county. Hg concentration in HCT positively correlated with that in soil (r 2  = 0.311, p  < 0.01), especially, the labile Hg species (F C1 , r 2  = 0.796, p  < 0.01) and the elemental Hg that is bound to the crystalline oxides (F C3 , r 2  = 0.711, p  < 0.01), and negatively correlated with Hg that is bound to humic and fulvic complexes (F C2 , - 0.304). Estimated daily intake (EDI) and target hazard quotient (THQ) results shown that Hg expose risk is much higher for children than adults, likely due to their different eating habits and the amount of snack intake.

Highly efficient and selective Hg(II) removal from water by thiol-functionalized MOF-808: Kinetic and mechanism study

Chenghan Ji,Yi Ren,Hang Yu,Ming Hua,Lu Lv,Weiming Zhang

Mercury pollution poses a serious threat to the ecological environment and public health due to its high toxicity and persistence, but there is still a lack of rapid and effective Hg(II) removal technology, especially emergency response of Hg(II) leakage. Herein, an effective metal-organic framework adsorbent, MOF-808-SH, was fabricated by grafting thioglycollic acid on MOF-808 for Hg(II) removal. The MOF-808-SH demonstrated high adsorption capacity of 977.5 mg/g, impressively ultrafast adsorption kinetics (C 0  = 10 mg/L, removal > 99 % in 10 s) with a rate constant k of 36.89 g mg −1 min −1 , which is dozens of times faster than that of ever reported Hg(II) adsorbents. Batch experiments show that MOF-808-SH exhibits high selectivity toward Hg(II) with a distribution coefficient K d as high as 5.0×10 6 mL/g. Moreover, MOF-808-SH exhibits excellent recyclability with a negligible loss of capacity after 6 adsorption-regeneration cycles. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) unveil that the –SH groups in MOF-808-SH are the key adsorption sites, and specific inner-sphere coordination with Hg(II) is responsible for the high selectivity. In addition, large surface area, well-developed porous structures and high –SH loading of MOF-808-SH reasonably explains ultrafast kinetics and high adsorption capacity for Hg(II). This study indicates the potential of MOF-808-SH to remove Hg(II) from wastewater.

Chemical stabilization of mercury in contaminated soil using Mg2Al layered double hydroxide supported iron sulfide composite

Lijuan Wang,Yang Bai,Yanyan Gong

Mercury (Hg) contamination in soil has been a worldwide environmental concern. We prepared and investigated a novel Mg 2 Al layered double hydroxide supported iron sulfide composite (FeS@Mg 2 Al-LDH) for immobilization of mercury in two high-profile Hg-contaminated field soils (TJ soil represents freshly Hg-contaminated soil and GY soil represents historically aged Hg-contaminated soil). Amending the two soils with FeS@Mg 2 Al-LDH effectively immobilized mercury. The addition of 0.02% of FeS@Mg 2 Al-LDH immobilized 97.0% of mercury in TJ soil within 80 d. Similarly, the addition of 0.05% of FeS@Mg 2 Al-LDH immobilized 84.9% of mercury in GY soil. Increasing the FeS@Mg 2 Al-LDH dosage enhanced the immobilization efficiency. Increasing the dosage from 0.02% to 1% boosted the Hg immobilization efficiency in TJ soil from 97.0% to 99.4%. Increasing the dosage from 0.05% to 1% enhanced the Hg immobilization efficiency in GY soil from 84.9% to 86.2%. FeS@Mg 2 Al-LDH reacted with Hg via chemical precipitation and surface complexation, and transformed Hg from more available Hg fractions (exchangeable and carbonate bound fractions) into less available forms (organic and residual fractions), thus, reducing the environmental risk of mercury. The addition of FeS@Mg 2 Al-LDH inhibited the production of methylmercury while enhanced the soil enzyme activities . This study proves the potential and feasibility of FeS@Mg 2 Al-LDH to effectively immobilize mercury in soil.

Investigating the role of poly-γ-glutamic acid in Pennisetum giganteum phytoextraction of mercury-contaminated soil

Kun Zhou,Deliang Yin,Chen Liu,Rongguo Sun

Farmland mercury (Hg) pollution poses a significant threat to human health, but there is a lack of highly efficient phytoextraction for its remediation at present. This study investigates the impact of poly-γ-glutamic acid (γ-PGA) on the phytoextraction capabilities of Pennisetum giganteum ( P. giganteum ) in Hg-contaminated soil. Our research indicates that amending γ-PGA to soil markedly enhances the assimilation of soil Hg by P. giganteum and transformation of Hg within itself, with observed increases in Hg concentrations in roots, stems, and leaves by 1.1, 4.3, and 18.9 times, respectively, compared to the control. This enhancement is attributed to that γ-PGA can facilitate the hydrophilic and bioavailable of soil Hg. Besides, γ-PGA can stimulate the abundance of Hg-resistance bacteria Proteobacteria in the rhizosphere of P. giganteum , thus increasing the mobility and uptake of soil Hg by P. giganteum roots. Moreover, the hydrophilic nature of Hg-γ-PGA complexes supports their transport via the apoplastic pathway , across the epidermis, and through the Casparian strip , eventually leading to immobilization in the mesophyll tissues. This study provides novel insights into the mechanisms of Hg phytoextraction, demonstrating that γ-PGA significantly enhances the effectiveness of P. giganteum in Hg uptake and translocation. The findings suggest a promising approach for the remediation of Hg-contaminated soil, offering a sustainable and efficient strategy for environmental management and health risk mitigation.

Microwave Enhanced Solidification of Gaseous Mercury from Flue Gas by a Novel Selenium Functional FeCo-LDH Based Halloysite Adsorbent

Yuan-Ming Cao,Xue-Lei Duan,Miao Bian,Hou-Yu Wang,Yi-Wen Shen,Chong Gao,Chun-Gang Yuan

The immobilization of Hg0 and detoxication of Hg-containing composites are enormous challenges for Hg pollution control, which provide a high requirement for the design and synthesis of materials. Herein, a new composite with halloysite, selenium, and transition metals as raw materials (FeCo-LDH/HNTs@Se) for a Hg0 trap was designed by precipitation with ion exchange and an in situ selenization method. Intrinsic features such as high affinity, microwave permittivity (109–1012), large surface area, abundant pores, and many active components favored Hg0 removal and immobilization. The removal performance, flue gas tolerance, and synergistic effect of active components were improved greatly when microwave was added. The study indicated that (1) the Hg0 removal efficiency of the composite could reach 99.4%; (2) the composite had excellent tolerance to different industries’ flue gases. The electron exchange of Co(II)/Co(III) and Fe(II)/Fe(III) and the existence of Se and SeO2 were important for Hg0 immobilization. HgSe was the main adsorption product based on both X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and an online lab-built thermal decomposition system (TPD-AFS) analysis, which made the used-materials possess low mercury leaching content (0.09 mg·L–1) lower than the US EPA regulatory value (0.2 mg·L–1). This work provides a sound way for mercury control, which is significant for environmental protection.

In situ remediation of mercury-contaminated groundwater through an in situ created reactive zone enabled by carboxymethyl cellulose stabilized FeS nanoparticles

Mengxia Wang,Bing Han,Dongye Zhao,Sen Hou,Weizhao Yin,Yanyan Gong

Faced with worldwide mercury (Hg) contamination in groundwater, efficient in situ remediation technologies are urgently needed. Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) stabilized iron sulfide (CMC-FeS) nanoparticles have been found effective for immobilizing mercury in water and soil. Yet, the potential use of the nanoparticles for creating an in situ reactive zone ( ISRZ ) in porous geo-media has not been explored. This study assessed the transport and deliverability of CMC-FeS in sand media towards creating an ISRZ . The nanoparticles were deliverable through the saturated sand bed and the particle breakthrough/deposition profiles depended on the injection pore velocity, initial CMC-FeS concentration, and ionic strength. The transport data were well interpreted using an advection-dispersion transport model combined with the classical filtration theory. The resulting ISRZ effectively removed mercury from contaminated groundwater under typical subsurface conditions. While the operating conditions are yet to be optimized, the Hg breakthrough time can be affected by groundwater velocity, influent mercury concentration, dissolved organic matter, and co-existing metals/metalloids. The one-dimensional advection-dispersion equation well simulated the Hg breakthrough data. CMC-FeS-laden ISRZ effectively converted the more easily available Hg species to stable species. These findings reveal the potential of creating an ISRZ using CMC-FeS for in situ remediation of Hg contaminated soil and groundwater.

Engineered cells for selective detection and remediation of Hg2+ based on transcription factor MerR regulated cell surface displayed systems

Dan Wang,Yanan Zheng,Lina Xu,Xiaosu Fan,Na Wei,Nanhao Jin,Shan Huang,Qi Xiao,Zihua Wu

Mercury pollution has been one of the most serious environmental problems today. The detection and remediation of mercury contamination are of special concern due to its nondegradable nature, bioaccumulation effect, and significant toxicity. In this research, the whole-cell based detection and remediation systems for Hg 2+ were engineered based on the cell surface engineering technique and transcriptional activation mechanism of metalloprotein MerR. The engineered biodetection system showed high selectivity for Hg 2+ over other metal ions with the detection limit as low as 0.1 nM. It also permitted a rapid, visual, and on-site detection of bioavailable Hg 2+ for large-scale water samples with simple processes. The engineered bioremediation system, which was more efficient than the most current biosystems with limited adsorption capacities, could continuously reduce mercury contamination in wide concentration by transforming highly toxic Hg 2+ to volatile and much less deleterious Hg 0 with extraordinary selectivity. In addition, the bioremediation system could perform function in the absence of extra inductive agent and showed an increased protection of cells against Hg 2+ biotoxicity. By fully imitating and utilizing the microorganisms, the engineered biochemical systems have great potential in the practical application of detecting and remediating Hg 2+ in the contaminated aquatic systems.

Sulfur/zinc co-doped biochar for stabilization remediation of mercury-contaminated soil: Performance, mechanism and ecological risk

Tianrui Xu,Guanghui Wang,Qiuling Yin,Zhongkui Zhou,Nansheng Deng

In this study, a novel sulfur/zinc co-doped biochar (SZ-BC) stabilizer was successfully developed for the remediation of mercury-contaminated soil. Results from SEM, TEM, FTIR and XRD revealed that biochar (BC) was successfully modified by sulfur and zinc. In the batch adsorption experiments, the sulfur-zinc co-pyrolysis biochar displayed excellent Hg(II) adsorption performance, with the maximum adsorption capacity of SZ-BC (261.074 mg/g) being approximately 16.5 times that of BC (15.855 mg/g). Laboratory-scale static incubation, column leaching, and plant pot experiments were conducted using biochar-based materials. At an additional dosage of 5 % mass ratio, the SZ-BC exhibits the most effective stabilization of mercury in soil, leading to a significant reduction in leaching loss compared to the control group (CK) by 51.30 %. Following 4 weeks of incubation and 2 weeks of leaching with SZ-BC, the residual mercury in the soil increased by 27.84 %. As a result, potential ecological risk index of mercury decreased by 92 % compared to the CK group. In the pot experiment, SZ-BC significantly enhanced the growth of Chinese cabbage, with biomass and root dry weight reaching 3.20 and 2.80 times that of the CK group, respectively. Additionally, the Translocation Factor (TF) and Bioconcentration Factor (BF) were reduced by 44.86 % and 74.43 %, respectively, in the SZ-BC group compared to the CK group. Moreover, SZ-BC can effectively improve enzyme activities and increase microbial communities in mercury-contaminated soils. The mechanisms of adsorption and stabilization were elucidated through electrostatic adsorption, ion exchange, surface complexation, and precipitation. These findings provide a potentially effective material for stabilizing soils contaminated with mercury.

Self-cementation of the alkali-activated volcanic tuff coupling with thiol-functionalized expanded perlite that enhances the solidification and stabilization of the mercury-contaminated soil

Tao Huang,Shu-Wen Zhang,Lulu Zhou,Aiyin Li,Hui Tao

Hg II contaminants tend to be soluble in the anoxic sediments, which would potentially deteriorate the traditional solidification/stabilization (S/S) process. The thiol-functionalized expanded perlite (thiol-Exp-p) was prepared and employed in the self-cementation of the alkali-activated volcanic tuff (VT) as both lightweight aggregate and adsorbent to enhance the S/S of the Hg-contaminated soil. The cementation experiments were comprehensively researched in a systematical design. The experiments of adsorption, self-cementation, coupling, and stability were subsequently configured and implemented to investigate the feasibility of the coupling system and to optimize the whole S/S process. Both the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and the intraparticle diffusion model were appropriate in fitting the dynamic adsorption of Hg II to thiol-Exp-p. CaO among the three alkali components had the most significant influence on the self-cementation of VT. The factors including the curing temperatures, the grinding times of VT, and the mass ratios of fly ash (FA) to binder all affected the coupling S/S process of Hg II -spiked soil. The compressive strengths gradually decreased over the dosage of soil samples ranging from 10% to 70% in the solidified blocks in the stability experiments with the leaching concentrations contrarily elevating in the range. The addition of thiol-Exp-p to the self-cementation of VT not only reinforced the stabilization of Hg II species in the solidified sample but also positively influenced the solidification process.

Rational design of smart adsorbent equipped with a sensitive indicator via ligand exchange: A hierarchical porous mixed-ligand MOF for simultaneous removal and detection of Hg2+

Zhang Liang,Wang Jing,Wang Huiting,Zhang Wentao,Zhu Wenxin,Du Ting,Ni Yongsheng,Xie Xianghong,Sun Jing,Wang Jianlong

The increasing accumulation of toxic mercury species in water environment has posed a serious health threat worldwide, making it inevitable to develop the versatile materials to achieve efficient prevention and remediation of mercury pollution. Guided by the solvent-assisted ligand exchange (SALE) approach, this work rationally constructed a mixed-ligand NH 2 -UiO-66-SH (NSU66) with hierarchical-pore structure by incorporating the thiol-rich ligands (H 2 DMBD) into the water-stable NH 2 -UiO-66 (NU66) precursor to act as a smart adsorbent equipped with sensitive detector for simultaneous sensing and removal of Hg 2+ . Unlike the traditional adsorbents, the as-prepared NSU66 not only exhibits a remarkable removal ability with fast capture rate (within 60.0 min), large uptake capacity (265.29 mg/g), and qualified selectivity, but also possesses satisfactory sensing capability, accompanied by low detection limit (3.50 × 10 −2 µM), wide linear range (1.00–99.7 µM), high specificity, and strong anti-interference capability. The detection function plays a vital role in indicating the removal behavior and the pre-enrichment effect of adsorption process correspondingly improves the sensitivity of indicator. Notably, the sensing and trapping capabilities of NSU66 are significantly improved compared to the NU66, which stems from the delicate design of the mixed-ligand and hierarchical-pore structure. Furthermore, proven excellent stability and recyclability emphasize the feasibility of NSU66 in practical applications. These results suggest that the smart NSU66 adsorbent can serve as a favorable platform for early warning and guided removal of toxic Hg 2+ in water.

Deep-sea coral evidence for dissolved mercury evolution in the deep North Pacific Ocean over the last 700 years

Qu Yang,Xu Kuidong,Li Tao,Wang Maoyu,Zhong Huan,Chen Tianyu

The ocean is an important inventory of anthropogenic mercury (Hg), yet the history of anthropogenic Hg accumulation in the ocean remains largely unexplored. Deep-sea corals are an emerging archive of past ocean chemistry, which take in sinking or suspended particulate organic matter as their food sources. Such organic matter would exchange Hg with the local seawater before being consumed by the deep, sea corals. As such, the organics preserved in the coral skeleton may record the Hg evolution of the ambient seawater during the time of coral growth. Here, we report the first data on Hg concentrations variability of a deep-sea proteinaceous coral in the oligotrophic North Pacific at the water depth of 1 249 m, in attempt to understand the transfer of anthropogenic Hg into the deep Pacific ocean over the last seven centuries. We find that the Hg concentrations of different coral growth layers have remained relatively constant albeit with considerable short-term variability through time. The overall stable Hg concentration of the last seven centuries recorded in our sample suggests that anthropogenic pollution is not yet a clearly resolvable component in the deep oligotrophic North Pacific waters, in agreement with recent estimation from modelling works and observational studies of modern seawater profiles. As there is hardly an unambiguous way to separate anthropogenic Hg from the natural background based on recent seawater profiles, our historical data provide valuable information helping to understand the oceanic cycle of Hg through time.

Rapid field testing of mercury pollution by designed fluorescent biosensor and its cells-alginate hydrogel-based paper assay

Yanan Zheng,Liudan Wei,Linwei Duan,Fangfang Yang,Guixiang Huang,Tianyi Xiao,Min Wei,Yanling Liang,Huiting Yang,Zhipeng Li,Dan Wang

With increasing industrial activities, mercury has been largely discharged into environment and caused serious environmental problems. The growing level of mercury pollution has become a huge threat to human health due to its significant biotoxicity. Therefore, the simple and fast means for on-site monitoring discharged mercury pollution are highly necessary to protect human beings from its pernicious effects in time. Herein, a “turn off” fluorescent biosensor (mCherry L199C) for sensing Hg 2+ was successfully designed based on direct modification of the chromophore environment of fluorescent protein mCherry. For rapid screening and characterization, the designed variant of mCherry (mCherry L199C) was directly expressed on outer-membrane of  Escherichia coli cells by cell surface display technique. The fluorescent biosensor was characterized to have favorable response to Hg 2+ at micromole level among other metal ions and over a broad pH range. Further, the cells of the fluorescent biosensor were encapsulated in alginate hydrogel to develop the cells-alginate hydrogel-based paper. The cells-alginate hydrogel-based paper could detect mercury pollution in 5 min with simple operation process and inexpensive equipment, and it could keep fluorescence and activity stable at 4 °C for 24 hr, which would be a high-throughput screening tool in preliminarily reporting the presence of mercury pollution in natural setting.
