Investigation of combined fouling behavior in nano-filtration process under various feed conditions

Shengji Xia,Yukun Wan,Nana Li,Yu Zhao

Despite the great advance in nano-filtration (NF) process development in various applications, its performance in water treatment is still impeded by the undesired fouling phenomenon, which is not yet fully understood nowadays. In this study, a comprehensive investigation on the fouling behavior, more specifically the combined fouling behavior with the presence of more than one type of foulant was carried out under various solution chemistries and feed hydraulic pressures. The interaction between the model organic foulant (alginate) and inorganic foulant (silica colloid) was systematically studied with nano-filtration membranes, with a more severe fouling observed in the combined fouling than individual foulants. However, the results also revealed that the commonly observed synergistic effect of combined fouling in the forward osmosis process was not present in the nano-filtration process. In addition, the solution chemistries (pH and calcium ions) and feed hydraulic pressure were also found to have certain influence on the combined fouling, especially the feed hydraulic pressure which exhibited a more pronounced impact on the flux decline than the other factors, thus in turn, affecting more on the reversibility of the membrane fouling.

Performance improvement of polyethersulfone membranes with Ti3AlCN MAX phase in the treatment of organic and inorganic pollutants

Vahid Vatanpour,Seyed Ali Naziri Mehrabani,Ahmad Dehqan,Samira Arefi-Oskoui,Yasin Orooji,Alireza Khataee,Ismail Koyuncu

In this work, the hydrophobic polyethersulfone (PES) membrane was modified by incorporating Ti 3 AlCN MAX phase. Synthesis of Ti 3 AlCN MAX phase was performed using the reactive sintering method. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed a 3D compressed layered morphology for the synthesized MAX phase. The Ti 3 AlCN MAX phase was added to the casting solution, and the mixed-matrix membranes were fabricated by the non-solvent induced phase inversion method. The performance and antifouling features of bare and modified membranes were explored by pure water flux, flux recovery ratio ( FRR), and fouling resistance parameters. Through the modification of membranes by introducing the Ti 3 AlCN MAX phase, the enhancement of these features was observed, in which the membrane containing 1 wt% of MAX phase showed 17.7 L/m 2 .h.bar of permeability and 98.6% for FRR . Also, the separation efficiency of all membranes was evaluated by rejecting organic and inorganic pollutants. The Ti 3 AlCN MAX membranes could reject 96%, 95%, and 88% of reactive blue 50, Rose Bengal, and azithromycin antibiotics, respectively, as well as 98%, 80%, 86%, and 36% of Pb 2+ , As 5+ , Na 2 SO 4, and NaCl, respectively. Finally, the outcomes indicated the Ti 3 AlCN MAX phase was an excellent and efficient novel additive for modifying the PES membrane.

Effects of point and nonpoint source pollution on urban rivers: From the perspective of pollutant composition and toxicity

Yuxuan Liu,Bei Su,Hongxin Mu,Yu Zhang,Ling Chen,Bing Wu

Wastewater discharge is considered to be one of the anthropogenic factors affecting the water quality of urban rivers. The source and composition of wastewater are complex and diverse, and it is difficult to evaluate its effect on water quality and ecological health of receiving waters. Environmental DNA method can determine all species living in waters by examining DNA sequences, reflecting the impact of water quality changes on aquatic systems. In this study, water samples from two urban rivers were collected in dry and wet seasons, and the composition of pollutants was investigated by nontarget screening. Based on the pollutant composition, compound toxicity prediction and concentration addition model were used to predict the toxicity changes of pollutants in the urban rivers. More than 1500 suspect organic pollutants were nontarget screened, and silafluofen was found to be a major toxicity contributor. Environmental DNA analysis was combined with water quality measure and pollutant toxicity prediction to reveal the effects of pollutants from different sources on aquatic ecosystems . Fish diversity was negatively correlated with the mixed toxicity of organic pollutants, suggesting potential ecological risk in these two urban rivers. Our study developed a water quality assessment method based on pollutant composition and toxicity, and the potential risk of nonpoint source pollutants on aquatic ecosystems should not be neglected.

Preparation of polysulfone-based nanofiber Janus membrane for membrane distillation containing organic pollutants

Wu Zhuobin,Zheng Ke,Zhang Guichang,Huang Longwei,Zhou Shaoqi

Membrane distillation is an emerging wastewater treatment technology that harnesses low-grade heat as an energy source and exhibits potential for complete desalination. Nonetheless, two notable challenges hinder the practical application of this technology: membrane wetting and fouling. To counter these challenges, an innovative anti-fouling Janus membrane with asymmetric wettability was developed through electrospinning. The hydrophobic layer was formed using tetraethyl orthosilicate/polysulfone (PSF), and the superhydrophilic layer was created using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/PSF. A sensitive adhesion probe was used to assess the anti-fouling performance of the Janus membrane against oil. Molecular dynamics simulation suggested that PVP reduced the adsorption tendency of the membrane for humic acid (HA). Under experimental conditions involving saline water with HA and a saline oil–water emulsion, the non-Janus membrane suffered severe fouling, resulting in rapid water permeate flux decline. However, the Janus membrane demonstrated consistent permeate flux (26.84 LMH and 24.92 LMH) and an impressive salt rejection rate (> 99.99%). This study suggests that the Janus membrane, with its high permeate fluxes and remarkable resistance to fouling and wetting, could be an effective solution for wastewater treatment, with considerable potential for future application.

The suitability of titanium salts in coagulation removal of micropollutants and in alleviation of membrane fouling

Yonghai Gan,Li Zhang,Shujuan Zhang

Coagulation is a conventional method in water treatment. In recent decades, with the rapid development of membrane filtration, the use of coagulation is facing some new challenges. How to minimize the membrane fouling became a leading-edge topic in the study of coagulation. Here, the performances of three types of titanium coagulants were evaluated in terms of both the coagulation removal of toxic micropollutants and the alleviation of membrane fouling. Three oxysalts and two antibiotics were taken as representatives of inorganic and organic micropollutants. As compared with titanium tetrachloride (TiCl 4 ) and polytitanium chloride (PTC), titanium xerogel (TXC) with a higher polymerization degree showed much better performances in direct coagulation removal of oxysalts and antibiotics and in pre-coagulation for mitigating membrane fouling in both coagulation-sedimentation-ultrafiltration (CSUF) and in-line coagulation-ultrafiltration (CUF) processes. In the CSUF system, the membrane permeate flux with TXC pre-coagulation (89.5%) was much higher than those of TiCl 4 (56.1%) and PTC (57.4%). After a 5 day continuous operation, the transmembrane pressure in the CUF system with TXC coagulation was increased only to 4.9 kPa, while those of PTC and TiCl 4 were 12.2 and 18.5 kPa, respectively. The results here demonstrate that TXC is a promising coagulant for pollutant removal and membrane fouling alleviation, due to the following merits: better floc properties, weaker pH-dependence, and higher resistance to coordination with organic pollutants. The observation shed new lights on the fabrication and application of coagulants in a wide variety of scenarios.

Salt sacrificial template strategy and in-situ growth of lamellar La(OH)3 on a novel PVDF foam for the simultaneous removal of phosphates and oil pollution without VOCs emission

Yunyun Wang,Li Chen,Yinhua Jiang,Xinyan Yang,Jiangdong Dai,Xiaohui Dai,Mingdong Dong,Yongsheng Yan

Applying polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) monolith for phosphates removal can improve the operability of the adsorption process compared with some other powder nanomaterials. However, as the commonly used synthesis strategy, non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) was deemed not environmentally friendly enough since the dissolution of PVDF often involved volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This article designed a salt sacrificial template method to fabricate a 3D porous PVDF monolith, and then in-situ growth of lamellar La(OH) 3 on the PVDF foam was realized to enhance the adsorption affinity to phosphates pollution. No VOCs were used or released during the whole synthesis process. The adsorption for phosphates was as high as 56.2 mg g −1 , and easy reusability of the novel PVDF monolith was realized. In addition, this PVDF-La(OH) 3 foam exhibited good adsorption properties in both oil and water environments, which implied it could not only adsorb phosphates in actual water samples but also separate oil contaminants from water. All these implied that this PVDF-La(OH) 3 foam could be a potential candidate for large-scale industrial adsorption and separation of phosphates. This PVDF-La(OH) 3 foam could be a potential candidate for large-scale industrial adsorption and separation of phosphates.

Effect of UV/TiO2 pretreatment on fouling alleviation and mechanisms of fouling development in a cross-flow filtration process using a ceramic UF membrane

Tao Yang,Houfeng Xiong,Fen Liu,Qiyong Yang,Bingjie Xu,Changchao Zhan

In the application of ultrafiltration (UF) for removal of natural organic matter (NOM) from water, membrane fouling has always been considered a big issue. The influence of UV/TiO 2 photocatalysis as pretreatment to mitigate cross-flow ceramic UF membrane fouling caused by humic acid (HA) and the involved mechanisms of fouling development were investigated. The characterization of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA), excitation-emission matrix (EEM), molecular weight (MW), hydrophilicity, fouling resistance, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and model fitting using Hermia blocking models were performed. The dominant membrane fouling patterns can be predicated by the initial intermediate pore blocking, transition fouling and the final stage of limited cake growth. With extended UV/TiO 2 pretreatment time, a significant reduction of cake filtration coefficients and a slight decrease in pore blocking coefficients were observed. Longer UV/TiO 2 pretreatment achieved the remarkable effect of reversible fouling elimination as a result of reaching the final stage of limited cake growth earlier and aggregation forming a porous cake layer by TiO 2 particles mixed with more hydrophilic (HPI) and high MW (>50 kDa) humic-like substances. However, photocatalytic pretreatment exhibited a slight effect on the mitigation of irreversible fouling that was mainly dominated by HPI fractions, especially tryptophan-like protein (5–50 kDa) organics attaching to and/or blocking the membrane pores.

Mitigation of organic fouling of ultrafiltration membrane by high-temperature crayfish shell biochar: Performance and mechanisms

Dawei Zhang,Kejing Zhang,Keyan Chen,Yingwen Xue,Jiatong Liang,Yu Cai

The paper applied crayfish shell (CFS) biochar to the mitigation of ultrafiltration (UF) membrane fouling induced by humic acid (HA) and sodium alginate (SA). Results indicated that the high adsorption capacity of CFS800 to HA made it effective in alleviating the irreversible membrane fouling induced by HA, and the cross-linking reaction between the hydroxyl calcium components on CFS800 and SA reduced the reversible membrane fouling induced by SA rapidly. Further analysis showed that the “hydrogel flocs” generated by the cross-linking reaction would accumulate on the surface of the substrate membrane and form an amorphous hydrogel layer to intercept the subsequent foulant and purify the water quality further. Meanwhile, the mitigation performance of CFS800 was twice more than that of commercial powder activated carbon (PAC), and the dosage was the main factor affecting its practical application performance and thus could be considered as a promising material in alleviating membrane fouling induced by HA and SA. More importantly, the findings of the present study gave a new sight towards the application of biochar.

Exploring advanced and sustainable bioaugmentation-enhanced ultrafiltration processes for the removal of emerging contaminants

Tingming Ye,QingJi Wang,Jing Qi,Baiwen Ma,Tao Lyu,Chengzhi Hu,Mathias Ulbricht,Huijuan Liu

The development of cost-effective and sustainable water treatment technologies is crucial for supporting the water sector and the public in achieving global sustainable development goals (SDG 6) and carbon neutrality targets. Ultrafiltration (UF), known for its compactness, relatively high performance, and ease of operation, has been widely deployed in water treatment. However, its limitations in removing some emerging contaminants (ECs) and membrane fouling issues have hindered its broader application. This study investigated the incorporation of bioaugmented filtration into conventional UF processes to enhance ECs removal and mitigate membrane fouling during the treatment of real drinking water sources. In addition to effectively removing microorganisms (eukaryotes and bacteria), polysaccharides (13.9%), and inorganic pollutants (CaCO 3 , MgO, SiO 2 , and Al 2 O 3 ), the proposed approach also demonstrated superior removal (4.6%–100.0%) of four target ECs (atenolol, carbamazepine, trimethoprim, and sulfamethoxazole) compared to direct UF process (1.5%–47.5%). After 56 days of operation, the bioaugmented pre-treatment significantly reduced transmembrane pressure (TMP) by 80.2% compared to the direct UF process. Mechanisms studies further reassured that ECs removal followed oxidation during bioaugmentation pre-treatment. The time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry with in-depth analysis capability (around 5 nm) revealed that the UF membrane primarily removed atenolol through adsorption. The toxicity prediction results of typical ECs and their degradation intermediates indicated a significant reduction in ecological risk for most intermediates. The findings from this work demonstrate the feasibility of using low-carbon and few-chemical water treatment technologies to secure drinking water quality.

Induced aging, structural change, and adsorption behavior modifications of microplastics by microalgae

Claude Kiki,Ying Qiu,Qi Wang,Binessi Edouard Ifon,Dan Qin,Kassim Chabi,Chang-Ping Yu,Yong-Guan Zhu,Qian Sun

The effects of microalgal biofouling on microplastic (MP) may differ from bacterial biofouling. In this study, the influence of microalgae on MP surface alteration, structural change, and adsorption of organic micropollutants was evaluated. Virgin polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polyamide (PA) were each immersed in algal photobioreactor and river freshwater for 30 days to simulate algal and river microbe biofouling respectively. Consequently, their physicochemical changes and adsorption potential of a mixture of six bisphenol analogues (BPA, BPS, BPE, BPB, BPF, BPAF) and two parabens (propyl–paraben, benzyl–paraben) were investigated. Owing to the algal bioactive compounds, major microalgae-induced biofouling and more MP aging than the river microbe aging were observed through fractures, pits, cracks, and algal attachments. Intrusion of algal organic matter and scission of polymeric functional groups were revealed during microalgal immersion and the potential MP aging pathways were proposed. Algal biofouling considerably altered the intrinsic properties of the MPs, consequently the adsorption capacity of PE and PVC was enhanced by 3.04–6.72 and 2.14–8.72 times, respectively. Adsorption process onto algal-aged MPs was pH-dependent, endothermic, non-spontaneous, and favored by hydrogen bonds. Meanwhile, the amide group in PA structure was conducive to organic micropollutant adsorption, which was likely reduced by algal aging and the erosion of the N-H stretching. Moreover, higher adsorption capacities of organic micropollutants were shown by the algal-biofilm PE and PVC than virgin and river microbial biofilm MPs. This study discloses that, biofouling and aging of MPs by microalgae through their bioactive components would engender more incidences on MP properties, organic micropollutants adsorption with associated environmental and health hazards.

Photocatalytic hydrogel film assisted forward osmosis (PFO) for water treatment: Sustainable performance and contaminant control

Mengyang Lu,Hanmin Zhang,Yu Tian,Wei Yao,Junsheng Wang,Yuezhu Wang

The integration of catalytic oxidation with forward osmosis (FO) holds promising potential to address two crucial challenges encountered by FO: fouling and unsustainable performance, but suitable approaches are still rare. Herein, we have successfully developed a photocatalysis-assisted forward osmosis (PFO) system. In the PFO, a self-made porous carbon nitride doped functional carbon nanotube photocatalytic hydrogel film (PCN@CNTM) was engaged in the FO process in an inventive way by simply sticking to the commercial FO membrane surface, preventing damage to the membrane from the catalyst's direct insertion and delaying the assault from the oxidation groups. PFO allowed organic pollutants to decompose in the feed solution (90%) and on the membrane surface, regulating the water chemical potential and giving the FO membrane antifouling properties. This resulted in sustainable water flux (11.8 LMH) with no significant membrane fouling in PFO, whereas in FO alone there was a significant fouling and flux drop (from 12.73 to 7.23 LMH in 4 h). Moreover, the expensive FO membrane was protected while the hydrogel film can be replaced on demand. The PFO exemplifies the concept of synergistic technology integration, presenting a new perspective on harnessing the strengths of distinct technologies in a mutually beneficial manner.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) ultrafiltration membrane fouling and defouling behavior: EDLVO theory and interface adhesion force analysis

Wanyi Fu,Lan Wang,Fangjuan Chen,Xuezhi Zhang,Wen Zhang

To unravel fouling and defouling mechanisms of protein, saccharides and natural organic matters (NOM) on polymeric membrane during filtration, this study investigated filtration characteristics on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) ultrafiltration membranes with bovine serum albumin, dextran , humic acid as model foulants. Membrane fouling and defouling performances were analyzed through monitoring the flux decline during filtration and flux recovery during physical backwash. Physico-chemical properties (e.g., hydrophobicity and surface charge) of PVC membrane and foulants were characterized, which were used in the extended Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (EDLVO) theory to calculate the interaction energies between membrane-foulant and foulant-foulant. The results showed that at the later filtration stages the fouling rate was strongly correlated with the deposition rate , which was determined by the interaction energy profile calculated by EDLVO. Moreover, the adhesion forces of membrane–foulant and foulant–foulant were further measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM) with modified colloidal probes. A positive correlation ( R 2 = 0.845) between particle detachment rate (determined by adhesion force) and defouling rate was developed for BSA and HA foulants that led to cake layer formation. By contrast, dextran defouling rate was off this correlation as dextran partially clogged membrane pores due to its smaller size.
