Triclosan (TCS) is widely used as an antibacterial disinfectant in personal care products, especially in rapidly-urbanizing countries, such as China. Almost all TCS enters wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), but the fate of the TCS in the WWTPs is unclear. TCS may be present in sewage sludge or in effluent, and the discharge of TCS into an ecosystem can pose environmental risks. In the present study, influent, effluent, and sewage sludge were collected from four typical urban WWTPs, and the fate of TCS in the plants was investigated. The study was conducted in Zhengzhou, a city in the middle reaches of the Yellow River in China. The sewage sludge was used for aerobic composting to study the influences of different ventilation treatments on the biodegradation effects of TCS and the changes in the microbial community during the composting process. The results showed that the mean concentration of TCS in the influent of the four typical WWTPs was 397.1 ng/L. The mean level of TCS in the effluent was 8.0 ng/L. The mean concentration of TCS in the sewage sludge was 814.4 ng/g. For the four WWTPs, the percentages of TCS removal were 97.6% (Nansanhuan), 97.6% (Xinzheng), 98.8% (Wulongkou), and 97.9% (Chenyu), respectively. The sewage sludge enrichment rates for TCS ranged between 36.4% and 49%. Therefore, there is a need to focus on the environmental risks from sewage sludge. During aerobic composting, the TCS was effectively degraded under three ventilation strategies. Thus, improved ventilation could enhance the degradation rate of TCS. Moreover, TCS degradation occurred in the mesophilic period and in the early stage of the thermophilic phase period. Finally, the degradation rates of TCS in sewage sludge samples composted with low-, medium-, and high-ventilation treatments were 48.1%, 59.0%, and 59.5%, respectively. Thus, high ventilation could provide enough oxygen for the pile and enhanced microorganism activity, benefiting the degradation of TCS. In addition, the microbial communities change during the composting process, and a diversity index of the changes can help explain the composting process.

This study investigates the effects of biochar, laccase, and their combined application on nitrogen transformation, the degradation of sucralose (SUC) and acesulfame (ACE), and the dynamics of bacterial communities during sewage sludge composting. The results indicated that NH 3 emissions were reduced by 41.2 %, 17.5%, and 40.8 % in the biochar, laccase, and biochar-laccase treatments, respectively, compared to the control. Meanwhile, N 2 O emissions decreased significantly by 26.8 % and 16.0 % for the biochar and biochar-laccase treatments, respectively, but increased by 8.1 % for the laccase treatment. Additionally, the biochar, laccase, and biochar-laccase treatments enhanced the degradation of SUC and ACE by 36.6–68.3 % and 49.2–69.8 %, relative to the control, respectively. Network analysis showed that the additive-treatment enhanced the cooperation within bacterial communities, and solidified artificial sweeteners degradation, especially under biochar-laccase application. Phylogenetic investigation of communities by reconstruction of unobserved states further indicated that biochar, laccase, biochar-laccase treatment increased enzymes associated with the degradations of organic matter and artificial sweeteners. In conclusion, it suggested that a combined addition of biochar and laccase was an effectively way to reduce nitrogen loss and promote artificial sweeteners degradations during sewage sludge composting.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are increasingly recognized as emerging contaminants that enter agricultural lands and surrounding ecosystems through the application of sewage sludge containing residual antibiotics. Composting is an effective method for reducing antibiotics and ARGs in sludge; however, the impact of residual antibiotics on the efficiency of ARG removal remains unclear. This study explored the reduction of oxytetracycline (OTC), sulfamerazine (SM1), and ciprofloxacin (CIP), as well as their impact on the removal of ARGs during sewage sludge composting. Our results demonstrated that composting achieved average removal efficiencies of 89.37 %, 72.63 %, and 82.98 % for OTC, CIP, and SM1, respectively. Metagenomic sequencing revealed that antibiotic residues significantly promoted the elimination of ARGs by 26.05–40.81 %. In contrast, the CK treatment resulted in a notable increase in tetracycline-resistant genes, particularly ade F, tet X, and sox R, compared to the levels reduced under antibiotic-induced selective pressure. Redundancy analysis (RDA) indicated that temperature, pH, C/N, CIP, and Proteobacteria, Tenericutes, and Chloroflexi were significant factors influencing the reduction of ARGs ( P < 0.05). Network analysis further confirmed that Proteobacteria, particularly genera such as Pseudomonas and Pseudoxanthomonas , were predominantly associated with ARGs. These findings indicated that antibiotic residues can effectively promote the rebound of related ARGs, and offer valuable insights for the source control of ARGs.

Laccase plays a crucial role in eliminating pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in different ecological system, but it could be easily decomposed or inactivated under high temperature and pH conditions during the composting process. In this work, three treatments, including Control, LAC-0 and LAC-8 (the two-stage laccase application on day 0 and 8), were investigated the effects of two-stage laccase application on the typical PPCPs degradations, also the laccase activity and the successions of bacterial community. Results revealed that two-stage laccase application significantly increased the NO 3 -N contents by 12.6 % and the TN content by 28.0 %, respectively. Meanwhile, the two-stage laccase application significantly increased the TOC degradation, and the enzymatic activities of laccase, cellulase, and urease, especially during the cooling and mature stages. In addition, the degradation rate of carbamazepine for LAC-0 and LAC-8 treatments increased by 44.7 % and 54.5 %, and ibuprofen by 64.5 % and 71.1 % relative to control, respectively. Microbial correlation analysis showed that the two-stage laccase application (LAC-8) facilitated the mutualistic relationship among the bacteria communities, and increased the negative correlations between the bacterial communities and PPCPs degradations. Furthermore, the partial least squares path model indicated that bacterial community played a directly role in the PPCPs degradation, and environmental factors and enzyme activities had an indirectly roles.
