BACKGROUND Piezoelectric catalysis using perovskite-type barium titanate (BaTiO 3 ) has been applied to the decomposition of refractory organic pollutants through piezoelectric catalytic persulfate (PS). Nevertheless, challenges such as a limited specific surface area, poor electrical conductivity and a tendency towards agglomeration in BaTiO 3 necessitate the exploration of novel methods to enhance its piezoelectric efficiency. RESULTS Sludge carbon (SC) from sewage treatment and BaTiO 3 was utilized to develop a novel piezoelectric catalytic material (BaTiO 3 /SC). The specific surface area of BaTiO 3 /SC reached 67.92 m 2 g −1 , which is nine times larger than that of BaTiO 3 alone. The inclusion of SC in the composite enhanced the number of active sites and contributed to a higher degree of graphitization, improved electrical conductivity, and provided a more stable structure for BaTiO 3 /SC. This material was capable of harvesting mechanical vibration energy from ultrasound, thereby generating piezoelectric catalytic properties and activating PS to achieve a 93% decomposition ratio of enrofloxacin (ENR) in water within 80 min. The activation of PS by BaTiO 3 /SC piezocatalysis led to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as • OH and SO 4 −• . These ROS attack the quinolone ring of ENR, which is susceptible to cleavage, resulting in the decomposition of ENR into intermediates of lower toxicity. CONCLUSION The incorporation of SC has enhanced the piezoelectric performance of BaTiO 3 , rendering BaTiO 3 /SC a novel perovskite-type piezoelectric catalytic material that improves piezoelectric efficiency. The BaTiO 3 /SC system, through its piezoelectric catalytic activation of PS, demonstrates potential for decomposition of refractory organic pollutants in water treatment. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

A kind of effective cyclic Fenton process was investigated, in which Fe species were reused as homogeneous catalysts after the acid dissolution of Fe-containing sludge. It was observed that the degradation of phenol was abruptly accelerated (i.e., triggering effect) after an induction phase of ca. 30 min for non-first runs. The abrupt acceleration was attributed to the rapid reduction of Fe(III) by poly-phenol intermediates, such as 1,2-hydroquinone, 1,4-hydroquinone and 1,2,4-trihydroxybenzene. Specially, it was found that sludge carbon (SC) could not only improve the precipitation performance of Fe and Al species, decreasing residual concentration of Fe and Al species to 0.11 mg L −1 and 4.6 mg L −1 , respectively, but also reduce considerably induction phase of the degradation, promoting the advent of the triggering effect in advance. The promotion of SC was stemmed from its unique co-catalytic property, by which Fe(III) was continuously reduced to active Fe(II) and H 2 O 2 was turned to stronger oxidizing OH and 1 O 2 .

For the first time, paint sludge waste (PS) was used as a pore forming agent in the preparation of sewage sludge derived carbon (SC). The tuning role and mechanism of PS for characteristics of SC were explored. It was found that a sludge carbon (SC PS-Zn ) with rich macro-, meso- and micro- porous could be produced by one-step pyrolytic process of sludge in the presence of PS and ZnCl 2. Its surface area could reach as high as 680.5 m 2 g −1 as 88.4 times and 4.8 times of sludge carbon without addition of PS and ZnCl 2 (SC) and only addition of ZnCl 2 (SC Zn ) , respectively. The macro- pores fabricated by PS provided much inner-space for ZnCl 2 to generate meso- and micro- porous, leading to a hierarchical porous structure. SC PS-Zn showed a high adsorption capacity of 685.4 mg g −1 for Chrysophenine, which is 1.3 and 1.7 times that of SC PS and SC Zn respectively. The adsorption difference could be simply attributed to the fact that the great molecules were difficult to enter micro- pores of SC Zn . It was also found that the difference was also dependent on orientation of Chrysophenine, which was related to pH value of solution.

In this work, a novel carbon-based hydrotalcite-like compounds materials (LDO-SBCs) were prepared by coupling layered double hydroxides (LDHs) conditioning and pyrolytic carbonization , and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Brunner-Emmet-Teller (BET) measurements. The synthesized LDO-SBCs composites were used in wastewater treatment for simultaneous removal of phosphate and dissolved organic matter (DOM). The adsorption of DOM and phosphate were well conformed to pseudo-second-order mode. Adsorption equilibrium was better fitted by Langmuir model for phosphate, while Freundlich model for DOM. Compared with the raw sludge carbon, the removal efficiency of DOM and phosphate by LDO-SBCs were increased by 8% and 13%, respectively. Based on the fluorescence spectrum and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), LDO-SBCs performed well in promoting the removal of protein substances (TPN and APN). Pore filling, hydrogen bonding , electrostatic adsorption and surface complexation might be dominant in the adsorption of DOM, while, surface complexation and ion exchange between the LDO layers were mainly responsible for the adsorption of phosphate. The difference of adsorption capacity of LDO-SBCs was related to the superior channel structure of composite materials and the composition of interlayer anions of LDO.

BACKGROUND Persulfate (PS) has the capability to yield free radicals via activators, thereby shaping an advanced oxidation process that can significantly contribute to effective sterilization. Central to this technology is the pursuit of appropriate activators. RESULTS In our research, we successfully synthesized an economical and efficient PS activator, namely a pyrrhotite-loaded sludge carbon (Pyr-SC) composite. This was achieved via a straightforward procedure utilizing two environmentally friendly and cost-efficient raw materials: pyrite and sludge. Pyr-SC exhibited a specific surface area of 60.4 m 2 g −1 and rich functional groups such as carbon–sulfur and sulfur–oxygen. The magnetic and graphitic carbon structures were formed at high temperatures during the preparation process, and the sludge carbon (SC) exhibited porous defects, which allowed the effective insertion of iron/sulfur into SC to form the stable Pyr-SC structure. Pyr-SC activated PS, which further sterilized Escherichia coli in the wastewater at a sterilization rate of 7.00 lg E. coli at 10 7 cfu mL −1 in 80 min. The sterilization rate was less affected by temperature and pH. We verified sulfate, hydroxyl and oxygen free radicals produced by the Pyr-SC-activated PS. The Pyr-SC composite, thanks to its expedited electron transfer, could activate PS to engender free radicals. Furthermore, the oscillatory transformation of iron ions caused by the monosulfide ion on the Pyr-SC surface augmented the production of free radicals. An assessment of Pyr-SC's stability was conducted, adhering to the principles of magnetic separation. After five cycles in the Pyr-SC/PS reaction system, the sterilization rate reached 3.29 lg, whereas the leaching rate of iron in Pyr-SC decreased. The Pyr-SC/PS reaction system also had a broad spectrum of wastewater. CONCLUSION The economically prepared Pyr-SC composite provided an effective technology for activating PS and sterilizing microorganisms in wastewater. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

New technology is required for the effective disinfection of pathogenic bacteria in water. A novel type of activator material (Fe-Mg-Mt-SS) was prepared using bimetallic iron-magnesium (Fe-Mg), montmorillonite (Mt), and sewage sludge carbon (SS) and applied it for disinfection. The specific surface area of Fe-Mg-Mt-SS was 115.72 m 2 /g, and the spatial structure of Fe-Mg-Mt-SS was orderly and layered. Mt played a role in frame support, and Fe-Mg was integrated into the structure in an orderly manner. Fe-Mg-Mt-SS effectively activated persulfate (PS) to disinfect Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) in water, with a disinfection rate of 7.00 lg of E. coli within 80 min in the PS/Fe-Mg-Mt-SS system, and the high disinfection rate was stable under different pH and elevated temperatures. Fe-Mg-Mt-SS showed broad spectrum disinfectant efficiency against other bacteria ( Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Bacillus subtilis ). Fe-Mg-Mt-SS activated PS killed E. coli mainly by producing hydroxyl and oxygen radicals, which damaged the E. coli cell membrane. Bimetallic activation with Fe and Mg synergistically activated PS, graphitised SS had more orderly spatial and laminar structures, and Mt improved the thermal stability and layer spacing of Fe-Mg-Mt-SS, which facilitated better metal insertion and improved its activation properties. The preparation of Fe-Mg-Mt-SS and activation of PS provide a new technology for the disinfection of pathogenic bacteria in water.
