Polyurethane (PU) is recognized as a promising material for asphalt modification due to its tunable physicochemical properties. To reduce reliance on petroleum-based polyols, this study employed bio-derived castor oil (CO) combined with polytetrahydrofuran (PTMEG), diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), and 1,4-butanediol (BDO) as raw materials. Polyether-type PU (PTMEG-MDI) and polyether/castor oil composite PU (PTMEG/CO-MDI) were successfully synthesized through controlled hard segment content ( C h ) and isocyanate index ( r ), followed by application in asphalt modification. The structure-property relationships were investigated using FTIR, TGA, DSC, and mechanical testing systems. The results demonstrated that the incorporation of CO significantly enhanced the comprehensive performance of PU composites. Compared to the single polyether-type PU, the PTMEG/CO composite PU exhibited better thermal stability, mechanical strength, and elongation at break. Increasing C h continuously improved the Shore hardness and tensile strength of PU, while reducing its thermal stability and elongation at break. When r reached 1.2, the PU molecular chains attained an optimal stability equilibrium state. FTIR analysis confirmed chemical reactions between the -NCO groups in PU and active components of asphalt, forming characteristic urethane absorption peaks, thereby achieving chemical bonding modification. In terms of asphalt modification performance, the PTMEG/CO-MDI system notably enhanced high-temperature stability while maintaining favorable low-temperature performance. This research establishes fundamental correlations between PU molecular design parameters ( C h and r ) and asphalt modification performance, providing theoretical guidance for developing eco-friendly high-performance asphalt modifiers.

Polyurethane solid–solid phase change material (PCM) with low phase change temperature is synthesized via prepolymer method. The synthetic polyurethane solid–solid PCM had lower crystallinity than PTMEG2000. The polyurethane solid–solid PCM was still in solid state during the heating process, and no liquid leakage was observed. After many phase change cycles, the polyurethane solid–solid PCM exhibited good stability of phase change cycles. Hence, the asphalt modified by polyurethane solid–solid PCM was prepared by high-speed shearing method. With increasing polyurethane solid–solid PCM proportion, the high temperature deformation resistance of modified asphalt gradually increased. At low temperature (<−18 °C), the addition of the polyurethane solid–solid PCM improved the low temperature performance of asphalt. With increasing polyurethane solid–solid PCM proportion, the specific heat capacity of the modified asphalt gradually increased. When the polyurethane solid–solid PCM proportion was >3 wt%, the specific heat capacity of the modified asphalt had an evident peak ranging from 13 °C to 25 °C. In the range of the proportion, the coefficient of the heat conductivity of the modified asphalt gradually increased with increasing PCM content. During the cooling process, the modified asphalt cooled relatively slow before the phase transition of the polyurethane solid–solid PCM. With continued decrease in the temperature, the phase transition of the polyurethane solid–solid PCM occurred, and the cooling rate of the modified asphalt further decreased. With increasing polyurethane solid–solid PCM content, the temperature control ability of modified asphalt and the efficiency of temperature control gradually increased.

Humidity-induced self-healing offers a practical and environmentally sustainable strategy to improve material durability, yet its application in bituminous materials remains underexplored. This study presents a novel polyurethane (PU) synthesized with polytetrahydrofuran (PTMEG) as soft segments and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) as hard segments, combined with polar poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) to create a PU-PNIPAM copolymer featuring multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions. The PU-PNIPAM was incorporated into styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modified bitumen, and rheological tests demonstrated that increasing PU-PNIPAM content enhances rutting resistance by improving creep recovery and reducing non-recoverable deformation. Optical microscopy observations under humid conditions revealed that PU-PNIPAM-modified bitumen exhibits humidity-responsive self-healing capabilities, with healing efficiency dependent on additive concentration. The humidity-induced self-healing mechanism of PU-PNIPAM was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), which monitored temporal evolution of the hydrogen bond index (HBI) under controlled humidity. A monotonic HBI increase confirmed aqueous hydrogen-bonding formation between PU and PNIPAM, driving autonomous repair. Water absorption and contact angle measurements revealed that despite PNIPAM-enhanced hydrophilicity of PU, incorporation of PU-PNIPAM into SBS-modified bitumen maintained bulk hydrophobicity, exhibiting water absorptivity below 1 wt% (deionized water) and 0.4 wt% (rainwater) after 4-day immersion. This strategy circumvents energy-intensive thermal healing, establishing an energy-efficient humidity-activated repair mechanism for bituminous composites. Crucially, the technology enables autonomous road maintenance in humid environments through continuous micro-crack sealing, extending service life while reducing resource consumption, maintenance frequency, and environmental footprint.

The recycling of waste tires avoids the environmental hazards of landfills and incineration, and its application in asphalt modification achieves resource sustainability. Currently, desulfurized rubber powder (DRP) is widely used as an asphalt modifier, mainly mixed with SBS, and fewer studies have been conducted on high-dose asphalt modification with ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA). In this paper, DR/EVA-composite-modified asphalt (DR/EVACMA) was prepared using 20% DRP and 4% EVA by adding four additives: furfural extract oil (FEO), a crosslinking agent (DCP), a vulcanizing agent (sulfur), and a silane coupling agent (KH-550). The aim was to study the effects of different additives on the physical properties, storage stability, and rheological properties of asphalt. First, conventional physical property measurements were carried out, and the data were analyzed using a polar analysis to determine the degree of influence of the four additives and the optimal ratios. Then, the rheological properties and fatigue resistance of DR/EVACMA were investigated through temperature scanning experiments, linear amplitude scanning (LAS) experiments, and multi-stress creep (MSCR) experiments. Finally, the reaction mechanism and microscopic properties were analyzed through infrared spectroscopy experiments (FTIR) and fluorescence microscopy (FM). The results showed that FEO had the greatest effect on asphalt characteristics. Compared to matrix asphalt and additive-free asphalt, DR/EVACMA has higher physical properties, fatigue resistance, and high temperature rheological properties due to its internal crosslinking structure. Its storage stability is also very good, with a difference of only 0.7 °C in the softening point.

The value-added recycling of waste polypropylene (PP) as asphalt modifiers has been a popular research topic in recent years, but high blending temperatures and asphalt smoke emissions are difficult issues that have not been solved. Therefore, this study innovatively used phthalic anhydride (PA) and catalysts (NHPI or BPO) to mechanochemically turn waste PP into different reaction products as bitumen-use PP modifiers (PPM(N) & PPM(B)). To well understand the physicochemical characteristics of PPMs, thermogravimetric analysis, torque rheology, and scanning electron microscopy were adopted and analyzed. Furthermore, the penetration, softening point, viscosity, storage stability, and dynamic shear rheology (DSR) tests were also carried out to study the performance differences of their PP modified asphalt (PPMA(N) & PPMA(B)). The main results showed that the PPM(N) continues being degraded with PA, but BPO-degraded PP conversely gets chemical connections with PA. With the effects of NHPI and BPO, all PPMs can improve the deformation resistance of virgin bitumen, even at higher temperatures, but as the PA content increases, this performance will gradually deteriorate for PPMA(N) and shows a slight improvement for PPMA(B). The appropriate use of PA can decrease the mixing temperature of PPM(N) with virgin bitumen and improve the storage stability of PPMA binders, and will not significantly sacrifice the resistances of its PPMA(N) to deformation, while with the addition of PA, the mixing temperatures of PPM(B) and virgin bitumen will not be decreased as expected and the resistances of PPMA(B) to deformation remain unchanged. Overall, the proposed mechanochemical method can work out to well address the high-quality recycling and reuse issue of waste PP for its large-scale application in asphalt pavement.

Castor oil-derived decanediamide, as a novel flexible epoxy curing agent, was synthesized by esterization with methanol and ammonolysis with ammonia. The chemical structure and thermal properties of this novel curing agent were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR) analysis, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The tensile strength, impact strength, dynamic mechanical properties, and thermal stability of cured epoxy resin were investigated by tensile tests, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and TGA, respectively. The results showed that the prepared decanediamide had a high yield of 85.4%, and the epoxy resin cured by the decanediamide revealed a slight decrease in the mechanical properties and thermal stability, and a longer pot life at high temperature compared with that of a conventional epoxy curing agent. Asphalt as a toughening agent was added into this system, in order to improve the poor brittle resistance of pure epoxy resin, which proved to have good compatibility with this system and improve the brittle resistance effectively. Thus, the decanediamide has a great potential to replace some of current petroleum-based compounds in the synthesis of epoxy curing agents.

Waste tire management remains an environmental challenge due to low recycling rates and the inert nature of rubber powder (RP) in asphalt applications. This study systematically investigates the surface activation of RP using five acids—gallic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, and tannic acid—and evaluates their effects on asphalt modification. Among these, gallic acid-activated rubber powder (GA-RP) exhibited the most significant enhancements in rheological properties and anti-aging performance. Compared to unmodified asphalt, GA-RP-modified asphalt demonstrated a 126.76 % increase in complex modulus, a 173.12 % increase in storage modulus, and a 107.18 % increase in loss modulus at 46°C, reflecting improved elasticity and high-temperature stability. The MSCR test revealed an 82.98 % reduction in strain under 0.1 kPa stress, indicating superior resistance to permanent deformation, while the LAS test demonstrated a 7.52-fold increase in fatigue life at 2.5 % strain, confirming enhanced durability. Molecular dynamics simulations provided further insights into the improved compatibility of GA-RP with the asphalt matrix. The solubility parameter difference between GA-RP and asphalt was reduced to 1.69, the smallest among all modified asphalts, suggesting superior molecular affinity. Mean square displacement analysis showed that the diffusion coefficient difference between GA-RP and asphalt was only 0.00038 Ų/s, significantly lower than that of unmodified RP (0.00086 Ų/s), confirming enhanced stability and reduced phase separation. Additionally, GA-RP-modified asphalt exhibited the lowest softening point difference (2.1°C) in storage stability tests, further validating the effectiveness of gallic acid modification. These findings establish an optimized strategy for sustainable waste tire utilization, offering an effective and environmentally friendly solution for high-performance asphalt modification.

Although the effectiveness of different types and morphologies of polymers in improving asphalt performance varies significantly, it offers a pathway to achieve high-performance and durable modified asphalt. In current asphalt modification research, recycled polymers are one of the leading candidates. It helps alleviate environmental risks associated with polymer waste and enables the transformation of waste materials into valuable resources for producing high-performance modified asphalt. However, the inherent surface inertness of recycled polymers poses a significant challenge, negatively impacting the durability of modified asphalt in applications. Therefore, further research is needed to explore how surface modification and structural design of recycled polypropylene fibers can enhance the performance of modified asphalt. This study adopts a Schiff base reaction combined with an in-situ design approach to preparing heterostructured copper oxalate nanoparticles/recycled polypropylene fibers (RP@PDA-PEI@CO) and high-performance composite SBS-modified asphalt. Experimental results demonstrated that recycled polypropylene fibers modified via the Schiff base reaction (RP@PDA-PEI) significantly improved the rheological properties of the asphalt. Specifically, the storage modulus (G'), loss modulus (G′'), and rutting resistance parameter (G*/sinδ) at 55°C increased by 77.93 %, 72.42 %, and 74.46 %, respectively, compared to unmodified recycled polypropylene fibers (RP). The combination of Schiff base reaction and in-situ design (RP@PDA-PEI@CO) significantly enhanced the ageing resistance of the modified asphalt. Compared to RP, the carbonyl content was reduced by approximately 50.43 % after short-term ageing and 36.8 % after long-term ageing. The Schiff base reaction and in-situ design strategy activated the inert interface of recycled materials and improved the overall performance of modified asphalt. These findings provide an innovative design concept for preparing and applying advanced modified asphalt, offering a sustainable and high-performance solution for the construction industry.

Rubberized asphalt (RA) has a serious problem of malodorous gas emission during production and construction, while the existing deodorizers have low adsorption efficiency and are ineffective in inhibiting odorous components. This paper establishes an odor index model based on odor threshold and component concentration, combined with principal component analysis (PCA), to identify and quantify malodorous-causing substances in VOCs emitted from RA. A chromium-based metal-organic framework (MOF) MIL-101 was synthesized to achieve efficient and directional inhibition of malodorous-causing substances. It is found that key malodorous compounds such as thiophene, dimethyl trisulfide, butyraldehyde, methacrolein, 2-methylpropanal, 2-methylbutanal, and alkylated benzenes were precisely traced and confirmed as major contributors to asphalt odor. In addition, the high surface area, hierarchical pore structure, and unsaturated Cr³ ⁺ sites of MIL-101 contributed to its selective adsorption capacity, which achieved an 84.77 % reduction in VOCs emissions and suppressed 61.1 % of key malodorous. Simultaneously, the rigid MIL-101 framework reinforces the asphalt matrix, improving rutting resistance by 57 % without compromising low-temperature flexibility. Considering mechanical performance, emission control, and economic feasibility, the optimal MIL-101 content was determined to be 8 ‰. This study provides a scientific basis for the use of MOF materials in VOCs suppression and odor control, offering a novel and practical strategy for sustainable rubberized asphalt pavement applications.

Pyrolysis technique can effectively convert waste plastics into high-performance asphalt modifiers, improving the asphalt pavement performance, thus achieving the resourceful utilization of waste plastics as building materials. Selecting Polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS) as raw materials, pyrolysis experiments were conducted to explore their synergistic interaction. Using Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), tube furnace, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS), the effects of plastics mixing ratio and Ni loading in HZSM-5 on the pyrolysis products and heavy oil composition were investigated. Based on the optimal heavy oil, the high and low temperature performance and aging resistance of the heavy oil modified asphalt were quantitatively evaluated. The results showed that the PP/PS co-pyrolysis exhibited higher conversion efficiency, with a 1:3 ratio maximizing liquid yield at 74.26 %. Ni-modified HZSM-5 effectively boosted the production of aromatic hydrocarbons in heavy oil while inhibiting the generation of phenols, acids, organosilicons and other non-hydrocarbon byproducts. The optimal Ni loading was 10 wt%, which maximized aromatic hydrocarbon content at 81.36 % within 90.6 % polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), achieving the best modulation of pyrolysis heavy oil components. The addition of heavy oil significantly improved the high-temperature stability and aging resistance of asphalt, though impairing low-temperature cracking resistance. The optimal oil content was 6 wt%, making the softening point increased by 10.3°C. This advancement promoted the conversion of waste plastic heavy oil into high-performance asphalt modifiers to avoid difficult combustion, providing theoretical support and technical guidance for its high-value application in the asphalt pavement field.

This study presents a dynamically crosslinked synthesis method for polyurethane (PU)-modified bitumen by directly incorporating polyols (PEG-2000), methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI), and additives into asphalt to create an adaptable polymer network. By carefully adjusting the NCO/OH molar ratio between 0.67 and 2.00, targeted control of material properties was achieved. When using excess MDI (NCO/OH > 1.00), the modified asphalt showed improved high-temperature performance with a 12.3 °C rise in softening point, 45 % lower penetration value, and increased viscosity (1.63 Pa·s at 135 °C), consistent with enhanced crosslinking of rigid polymer segments. Conversely, formulations favoring PEG content (NCO/OH < 1.00) demonstrated better flexibility, improving ductility by 4.0 cm through plasticizing effects. The covalent bonds in PU-modified system provided exceptional storage stability, maintaining a 0.6 °C softening point difference compared to 4.5 °C variations observed in conventional SBS-modified asphalt. Comprehensive characterization using FTIR spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and thermal analysis confirmed successful PU formation, and identified crosslinking-dependent phase separation. These findings establish a molecular design strategy for engineering asphalt binders with customizable performance profiles to meet diverse pavement requirements.
