Performance improvement on the cold flow properties of crude oil with high asphaltene by adjusting the polarity of the third monomer in polymers

Saifei Fang,Xin Pu,Ali Usman,Jiawen Hu,Xin Han,Lei Ye,Yunlong Qin,Pengpeng Liu,Bo Luan,Jichang Liu

Asphaltenes and waxes are the primary factors affecting the cold flow properties of crude oil. In this paper, based on the binary polymer of acrylate-maleic anhydride (PM 22 -MA), different third polar groups of acrylamide, N -(hydroxymethyl) acrylamide, N -phenylacrylamide (NPA), and styrene (SM) were introduced to synthesize a series of ternary pour point depressants (PPDs) to explore the effect of asphaltene on the cold flow properties of Xijiang (XJ) crude oil. Thereinto, PM 22 -MA-NPA containing amide group and benzene ring exhibited the best depressive effect, which decreased pour point by 14°C at 1500 ppm. The mechanism of interaction of the polar groups in PPDs with asphaltene was studied. The polar groups could form stronger hydrogen bonds with asphaltene, delaying the asphaltene macromolecule bonding, allowing the synergistic effect of PPDs and asphaltene to be better utilized to improve the cold flow properties of crude oil. Furthermore, the dipole moment magnitude and electron cloud density were calculated with Gaussian. It was found that the polar group with a dipole moment magnitude of 3.2244 debye and an electron cloud density ranging from −1.6364 to 1.9944 eV was the most suitable third polar monomer for the PPDs of XJ crude oil.

Influence of asphaltenes on the performance of electrical treatment of waxy oils

Chenbo Ma,Jinjun Zhang,Kai Feng,Zixin Li,Chaohui Chen,Qian Huang,Yingda Lu

Electrical treatment is emerging as an efficient approach to improve the cold flowability of crude oils. In this work, waxy model oils under static state were electrically treated by an in-house apparatus. The influence of asphaltenes, the most aromatic of the heaviest components of crude oil, on the performance of electrical treatment was systematically examined for the first time. The presence of asphaltenes was found to significantly undermine the effectiveness of electrical treatment on waxy oils, and this negative influence became more pronounced at higher asphaltene contents. The effect of asphaltenes was largely independent on their aggregation state. Interestingly, although asphaltenes generally have a negative effect on electrical treatment of waxy oils, increasing polarity of asphaltenes alleviates this unfavorable effect. The results from microscopic analysis suggest that the less pronounced change in the size distribution of wax crystals might be one of the reasons for the unfavorable effects of asphaltenes on electrical treatment of waxy oils.

The viscosifying behavior of W/O emulsion and its underlying mechanisms: Considering the interfacial adsorption of heavy components

Changxiao Cao,Shaohua Gu,Zhaojie Song,Zehui Xie,Xuya Chang,Pingping Shen

Formation of water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion seriously limits heavy oil production, and the interfacial adsorption of heavy components of oil is the key to clarify the emulsification of crude oil and formation water. In this study, the viscosifying behavior of W/O emulsion was correlated with the interfacial adsorption of heavy components using two typical heavy oil samples, i.e., high-resins oil and high-asphaltenes oil. Results showed that the resins, instead of the asphaltenes , contributed to the pseudoplastic behavior of W/O emulsion. The interfacial adsorption of resins presented the lower interfacial tension (IFT), the higher interfacial viscosity and the stronger film stability. However, when more asphaltenes was adsorbed on the interface, the film of oil-water interface changed from viscous to brittle and breakable. According to the composition analysis, the interfacial activity of resins was much stronger than asphaltenes. Besides, the W/O emulsion formed using model oil with resins performed the better stability compared with that formed using model oil with asphaltenes. This study provided that the interfacial adsorption of resins enhanced the emulsifying ability of crude oil and the film stability of W/O emulsion, which heavily aggravated the viscosifying behavior.

Stability of asphaltene-mircoparticles co-stabilized emulsions by oxygen-enriched nonionic demulsifier

Xueying Zhang,Junyan Wang,Xincheng Zhang,Lin He,Hong Sui,Xingang Li

The fine mineral particles often coexist in oil-water emulsions, enhancing the stability of oil-water emulsions. Herein, the micro SiO 2 was used to investigate its synergistic effects with the interfacially-active asphaltenes (IAA) on forming the strong interfacial film at the oil–water interface. This IAA-particle film showed high rigidity, allowing the emulsion droplets (4 μm − 20 μm) to be much more stable than the traditional asphaltene-stabilized emulsions. With the addition of the oxygen containing demulsifier (MJTJU-2, an alternated aliphatic alcohol nonionic polyether), this kind of emulsion could be broken significantly (over 99 % at the demulsifier concentration > 600 ppm and settling time > 45 min) with almost all of the microparticles transferring from oil phase to the water phase as particle net-like film. The optimal concentration (1000 ppm) of demulsifier were obtained. Further mechanistic study by QCM-D suggested that the desorption process of asphaltenes from solid surface could be divided into three main stages: the demulsifier molecules adsorbed and penetrated into the IAA adsorption film on solid surface; the simultaneous desorption of the adsorbed IAA and pre-adsorbed demulsifiers; the IAA film became loose and was destructed by the demulsifiers. AFM tests found that after addition of demulsifiers, the surface force between IAA and silica (0.0589 mN/m) decreased about 37 %. The MD simulation results showed that the demulsifier molecules would adsorb on the IAA film firstly by van der Waals and hydrogen bond, making the film much looser. The demulsifier could interact with the IAA molecule, resulting in desorption of IAA. Simultaneously, the demulsifier could compete for the adsorption sites on the IAA molecules by forming new hydrogen bonds, which destroyed the IAA adsorption layer. As a result, the stable IAA-solid film at oil–water interface could be broken. These findings would provide fundamental understanding to the stability and instability of IAA-solids co-stabilized oil–water emulsions, oil-sludge treatments.

Influence of CO2 on asphaltene adsorption dynamics at the Oil-Gas Interface: New insights into precipitation and aggregation processes

Chao Zhang,Zihan Gu,Zongyang Li,Meijia Wang,Pingkeng Wu,Zhaomin Li

To investigate the effect of CO 2 on the precipitation of asphaltene in oil, and verify the advantages of CO 2 flooding, this work designs interfacial tension experiments and PVT system experiments to create the experimental environment under different temperature and pressure conditions that make CO 2 contact with oil. The results indicate that CO 2 can affect the oil morphology, and the trend of oil volume increase and decrease depends on the dynamic balance between the expansion effect and the component extraction effect of CO 2 on oil. Under low pressure, the oil expansion caused by dissolved CO 2 dominates the experiments, increasing the oil volume. Under high pressure, sufficient CO 2 in the oil activates its component extraction effect, and the asphaltene in the oil precipitates and accumulates at the interface between the oil and CO 2 due to the disruption of the component equilibrium of the system, exerting a surface activity effect, leading to a decrease in oil volume. Due to the movement of asphaltene towards the system interface and the formation of an asphaltene film during this stage, which hinders the entry of CO 2 into the oil, the interfacial tension shows three linear decreasing trends with increasing pressure. This mechanism also changes the variation trend of the oil volume in CO 2 during the pressure increase. Moreover, the components of the oil extracted by CO 2 will be transferred to CO 2 , making its properties similar to oil. With the reduction of interfacial tension, this process promotes the miscibility between the two. These effects verify that CO 2 can improve the fluidity and quality of oil during reservoir development, and reduce or even eliminate the adhesion work required for the working fluid to displace the oil. These conditions are conducive to improving reservoir development efficiency, reflecting the great application value of CO 2 flooding.

Response of oxidized asphaltene aggregations in presence of rejuvenators and characteristics of molecular assembly behavior

Mei Deng,Xuejuan Cao,Yin Yuan,Xiaoyu Yang,Boming Tang,Xiaoyan Li

In this work, a high quantum level of density functional theory (DFT-D) approach and fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR) at a micro-level were used to understand one phenomenon: the specific molecular mechanisms responsible for the deagglomeration effect of 10 kinds of representative molecules of bio- and petroleum-based rejuvenators on asphaltene aggregations found in the aged asphalt. The DFT results indicated that the action site of rejuvenators in sulfoxide group (S = O) position was bound stronger than those in carbonyl (C = O) and pyridine nitrogen. Compared with petroleum-based rejuvenators, bio-rejuvenators were responsible for significant contribution to the deagglomeration process when they were adequately inserted into the oxidized asphaltene dimer. Especially, 2-methoxyphenol (phenolic compounds) showed significantly higher efficiency than either of them. The deagglomeration behavior was mainly attributed to a new interaction (hydrogen-bonds of O-H··O/N-H··O and dispersion-attraction) of a series of competing factors between the rejuvenators and the asphaltenes. This polarized the charge distribution throughout the aromatic region of the asphaltene dimer and built up a multi-centered electron density (such as a three-center four-electron H-bond), thus destroying eventual interactions between asphaltene stacks and reducing the extent of clustering of asphaltene units that were intensified during oxidative aging. The FTIR data painted a preliminary picture of the hybrid rejuvenator-asphaltene as aromatic cores with shorter aliphatic side chains and more carbonyl and hydroxyl side groups, and showed the absence of chemical bonding interaction between the rejuvenators and asphaltene nanoclusters.

Inhibition of Wax Crystallization and Asphaltene Deposition by Star Poly(Octadecyl Acrylate-Styrene) (POA-St) for African Crude Oil

Zuojia Xi,Xubiao Zhang,Chaohe Yang,Jun Xu

In the global energy landscape, the development of desert oil in Africa has increased the diversity of world oil supply and helped maintain the balance of the global energy market. However, wax precipitation and asphaltene deposition cause numerous challenges during the recovery and pipeline transportation of African crude oil. Traditional linear polymer additives often have limited wax-modifying and asphaltene-dispersing efficiency. In this work, linear poly(octadecyl acrylate-styrene) (POA-St) and a series of star POA-St copolymers with different arm numbers (3, 4, and 6) were synthesized through reversibly additive fragment chain transfer polymerization. The effects of the linear and star POA-St on the wax precipitating properties, pour point, rheology, and asphaltene stability of African waxy crude oil were studied in detail. The star POA-St copolymers show superior performance compared with linear polymers in inhibiting wax crystal formation, improving crude oil rheology, and stabilizing asphaltene. Increasing the arm number of star POA-St greatly improves its performance. Star POA-St-6 reduces the wax appearance temperature of the crude oil from 53.7°C to 51.1°C. At 20°C, the addition of the star POA-St-6 reduces the pour point of crude oil from 30°C to 21°C, and the viscosity and yield stress decrease by 74% and 55.2%, respectively. In addition, star POA-St-6 increases the initial precipitation points of asphaltene from 44.3% to 57.1%, showing a splendid asphaltene inhibiting efficiency. We speculate that the star POA-St stabilizes asphaltene aggregates among its arms and changes the wax crystal morphology through co-crystallization and nucleation effects, thereby exhibiting good performance. These findings provide prospective insights and avenues for the structural optimization and innovation of a new type of pour point depressant.

Synthesis of a low temperature ionic liquid demulsifier and its demulsification mechanism

Liwei Shen,Shi Liu,Ji'an He,Qian Qu,Yuqi Tang,Zejun Zhang,Dong Xiang,Xuemin Yan,Yuanzhu Mi

In this paper, an ionic liquid (DEBIL) was synthesized by a simple and controllable method. The chemical structure was verified by FT-IR, 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR, and the demulsification performance was observed by the bottle test. The results displayed that DEBIL had faster demulsification rate and higher demulsification efficiency (DE) than commercial demulsifiers. In addition, its production cost is lower than existing commercial demulsifiers which usually use ethylene oxide and propylene oxide as starting materials. In detail, the DE could reach 98.5 % after demulsifying with 300 mg/L of DEBIL for 2 h at 50 °C. Besides, DEBIL had a DE of greater than 95 % at high salinities (50000 mg/L), low temperature (40 °C), and wide pH range (2–10). Moreover, interfacial competitive adsorption between asphaltene and DEBIL was observed by the interfacial tension (IFT), three-phase contact angle (CA), coalescence time of droplets and elastic modulus of interfacial film. Furthermore, the possible demulsification mechanism was proposed in this study. DEBIL has both hydrophilic center and hydrophobic alkyl chains, which enables it to diffuse rapidly to the oil–water interface and reduce the IFT via replacing asphaltenes at the interface, resulting in the formation of unstable composite film and initiating the demulsification.

Effect of Dodecylbenzenesulfonic Acid as an Asphaltene Dispersant on the W/O Emulsion Stabilized by Asphaltenes and Paraffin Wax

Zhiqi Zhao,Xue Xia,Yanan Li,Daiwei Liu,Wei Cai,Chuanxian Li,Guangyu Sun,Bo Yao,Fei Yang

Dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) is injected into wellbores as an asphaltene dispersant to alleviate asphaltene deposition problems. The addition of DBSA will change the dispersion of asphaltenes in the crude oil, affecting the wax precipitation property of the crude oil as well as the adsorption behavior of asphaltenes at the oil–water interface, thus significantly altering the W/O emulsion’s stability. In order to provide better theoretical guidance for oil–water separation in oilfield gathering and production processes, in the paper, the effects of DBSA concentration (from 0 to 500 ppm) on the emulsions’ stability containing both asphaltenes and paraffin wax and the mechanism were systematically investigated at two different temperatures (30 and 15 °C) based on the wax precipitation and rheological properties of the model crude oil, the oil–water interface adsorption properties, and the macroscopic and microscopic properties of the emulsion. The outcomes demonstrated that the test temperature had a highly substantial impact on the model emulsion. The main element affecting the stability of the emulsion at 30 °C (above the wax appearance temperature (WAT)) was the interfacial structure’s strength. The low-temperature flowability of the oil phase primarily controlled the process of emulsion stabilization at 15 °C (below the WAT). Furthermore, we speculate that the wax crystals could precipitate on the surface of the emulsified droplets, which also facilitated emulsion stability at 15 °C. Combining the above experimental observations, the mechanism of DBSA concentration affecting the emulsion stability was proposed, which would contribute to solving the issues in the emulsion breaking and dewatering process of crude oil emulsions.

Versatile superhydrophobic sponge for separating both emulsions and immiscible oil/water mixtures

Dongdong Gao,Fang Cheng,Yong Wang,Chunmei Li,Eva Murong Yang,Chao Li,Lijun Zhang,Gang Cheng

Much effort in resource recycling and recovery has been devoted to developing durable materials for separation, but their versatility for emulsions and immiscible oil/water mixtures was far from ideal. In this work, a superhydrophobic sponge (MS-EP-APT) was developed using asphaltene (APT), melamine sponges (MS) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) for demulsification and water-oil mixture separation. These three easily obtained materials came from either oil refinement residue or low cost chemicals. The surface wettability , chemical stability, and mechanical durability of the sponge were analyzed to determine its separation potential. This sponge exhibited great separation efficiency for immiscible oil/water mixtures (> 96.0%), surfactant stabilized water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions (> 96.0%) and anionic surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions (> 98.0%). It demonstrated good reusability and salt tolerance even in seawater . The separation mechanisms were proposed to be related to the hydrophobicity , positive charge, and torturous channels of the sponge. These superior performances make our sponge a strong candidate for green manufacturing and engineering in resource recovery and environmental remediation.

Synergistic effect of modified ethylene-vinyl acetate and asphaltenes on improving the flow properties of model oil

Yang Liu,Zheng-Nan Sun,Guo-Lin Jing,Yi-Hai Yang,Hui Jiang,Xiao-Yan Liu

The effect of alcoholic polyethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) product ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVAL) on the low-temperature flow properties of model oil containing asphaltene (ASP) was investigated. The change of wax crystal microscopic morphology of model oil before and after modification were examined, and the influence of asphaltene mass fraction on the rheological improvement effect of EVAL was analyzed. The composite system of EVAL and asphaltene significantly reduced the pour point, gel point, apparent viscosity, storage modulus and loss modulus of waxy oil at low temperatures. When the EVAL concentration is 400 ppm and the asphaltene mass fraction is 0.5 wt%, the synergistic effect of the two is optimal, which can reduce the pour point by 17 °C and the modulus value by more than 98%. The introduction of EVAL strengthens the interaction between asphaltenes and wax crystals, forming EVAL-ASP aggregates, which promote the adsorption of wax crystals on asphaltenes to form composite particles, and the polar groups prevent the aggregation of wax crystals and reduce the size of wax crystals, thus greatly improving the fluidity of waxy oils.

Adsorption behavior of non-ionic demulsifiers at the oil/water interface stabilized by asphaltenes: Experiments, adsorption kinetics, and mechanisms

Shuoshuo Song,Changjun Li,Wenlong Jia,Nobuo Maeda,Xuehua Zhang,Huan Xiao,Fan Yang,Yuanrui Zhang

Formation of emulsions containing asphaltenes is both undesirable and unavoidable in petroleum production. Chemical demulsifiers, such as non-ionic surfactants, have long been applied as the cheapest and most effective method of breaking emulsions by altering the oil/water interfacial properties. In this study, the association state of the asphaltenes, the dehydration rate, and the interfacial rheology under various demulsifier concentrations were used to analyze the contributions of non-ionic demulsifiers to the breaking of the asphaltene-containing emulsions. Additionally, the dynamic interfacial tension (DIFT) data over time were used to investigate the adsorption kinetics of the asphaltenes and the demulsifier at the oil/water interface. Results indicate that liquid paraffin enhanced the association of the asphaltene molecules, while the non-ionic demulsifier rendered asphaltene aggregate sizes smaller. The addition of the demulsifiers reduced the interfacial strength, leading to an unstable interface. The oil-soluble demulsifiers reduced IFT more effectively than the water-soluble ones, due to their faster migration rate and low interfacial tension gradient to the oil–water interface. The adsorption process of the asphaltenes, influenced by the demulsifier concentration, could be divided into three stages: a short-term diffusion-controlled process, a transition process, and a slow descent process (referred to as Regimes I, II, and III). In Regime I, the diffusion coefficient of asphaltenes increased with the demulsifier concentration, indicating that the demulsifier aided the dispersing of the asphaltenes in the solution. The equilibrium IFT and the maximum surface excess concentration of the asphaltenes in the long-term adsorption process decreased with the demulsifier concentration, indicating that the asphaltene-containing emulsions generally became unstable after adding the demulsifiers. Our results offer valuable insights into the adsorption kinetics and the mechanisms of alterations by the asphaltenes and demulsifiers of the oil/water interface, with implications for various interfacial phenomena (e.g., emulsion stability) involving surfactants in oil production, transportation, and processing.
