Hydrothermal treatment (HT) can effectively dehydrate and reduce oily sludge (OS) volume, but the resulting hydrothermal oily sludge (HOS) presents greater challenges for washing than the initial oily sludge (IOS). This study examines the effects of HT on OS by analyzing changes in water, oil, and solid. Results indicate that HT considerably decreases the water content in OS while increasing resin and asphaltenes contents. In addition, condensation, side-chain scission, and oxidation reactions occur during the HT process, resulting in coking, agglomeration, and an increase in oxygen-containing groups. This increase, further confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), enhances the interaction between oil and solids. Calcite, the most prevalent solid-phase component, may form a calcium bridge with the oxygen-containing groups. Moreover, HT reduces the solid particle size, thereby increasing the oil–solid contact area. Interestingly, the process of deasphalting diminishes the interaction between oil and solids, facilitating sludge washing. After washing, the residual oil content in HOS is reduced to less than 0.34%. This study elucidates why HOS is challenging to separate from oil and solids and introduces a novel method that combines dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBSA)-assisted heptane deasphalting with conventional washing techniques. This method shows promise for applications in OS affected by weathering processes.

A series of chemical products with characteristic groups in molecular structures were synthesized as novel flow improvers (FIs) for heavy asphaltenic crude oil. The rheological measurement results showed that the FI-5 could behave the better performance in improving fluidity of heavy oil than FI-2 due to the former could form stronger hydrogen bonds with asphaltene in oil, which was confirmed through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and energy of simulating studies. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis results demonstrated that two products altered asphaltene structure at different degree through hydrogen bonding interaction, and the aggregation-dispersion effect of FIs on asphaltene were respectively obtained through scanning electron microscope (SEM), which beneficially weakened the stable structure of asphaltene in the heavy crude oil system . Hence, the mechanisms were tried to propose that could explain the phenomenon in rheological measurement why FI-2 was not as good as FI-5 in improving fluidity of heavy oil. Results also indicated that the asphaltene content and aggregation structure in oils were vital parameters for its viscosity.

The formation of hydrate increases the uncertainty of the flow system in subsea multiphase transportation pipelines. Waxes and asphaltenes have been found to influence hydrate formation, but the detailed mechanism of their interaction remains unclear. A lab-scale high-pressure stirring reactor was used to analyze the influence of asphaltenes on CO2 hydrate evolution behavior in waxy water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions. Results demonstrated that waxes inhibited CO2 hydrate nucleation. The addition of asphaltenes promoted the inhibition effect of waxes, and the enhancement effect was nonmonotonic with the asphaltene contents increased. Based on microscopic observation and wax precipitation characteristics, this behavior could be interpreted as the competitive effect of increased adsorption of wax crystals on the surface of the droplets and reduced amount of wax precipitation. Moreover, asphaltenes were found to facilitate the decomposition process of CO2 hydrates in waxy systems by decreasing the wax precipitation amount and stabilizing the emulsion. This work can provide potential engineering guidance for flow assurance applications.

Asphaltene precipitation/deposition is considered a problem of formation damage, which can reduce the oil recovery factor. In addition, asphaltenes can be deposited in pipelines and surface installations, causing serious complications in guaranteeing runoff, decreasing the production of oil wells. The precipitation of asphaltenes can be minimized by reducing the oil production flowrate or by using chemical inhibitors. Analyzing the stability and precipitation trend of asphaltenes in petroleum is vital for the guarantee of flow. For this purpose, several experimental and numerical methods have been proposed. Once the risk of precipitation is established, strategies can be formulated for the prevention and diagnosis of deposition problems in production or production training. The tests can be performed with dead oil, available in the wellhead, and help in understanding the behavior of the asphaltenes. This review aims to present (i) the problem related to the precipitation of asphaltenes; (ii) thermodynamic models of asphaltene precipitation; and (iii) asphaltene inhibition, control, and removal techniques using nanoparticles. Keywords:asphaltenes;formation damage;precipitation/deposition

China possesses abundant heavy oil resources, yet faces challenges such as high viscosity, underdeveloped production technologies, and elevated development cost. Although the in-situ catalytic viscosity-reduction technology can address certain technical, environmental, and cost problems during the extraction process, the catalysts often suffer from poor stability and low catalytic efficiency. In this study, a green and simple room-temperature stirring method was employed to synthesize a class of highly efficient and stable 2D MOF catalysts, which possess the capability to conduct in-situ catalytic pyrolysis of heavy oil and reduce the viscosity. Under the condition of 160 °C, a catalyst concentration of 0.5 wt%, and a hydrogen donor (tetralin) concentration of 2 wt%, the viscosity-reduction rate of Fe-MOF is as high as 89.09%, and it can decrease the asphaltene content by 8.42%. In addition, through the structural identification and analysis of crude oil asphaltenes, the causes for the high viscosity of heavy oil are explained at the molecular level. Through the analysis of catalytic products and molecular dynamics simulation, the catalytic mechanism is studied. It is discovered that Fe-MOF can interact with heavy oil macromolecules via coordination and pore-channel effects, facilitating their cracking and dispersal. Furthermore, synergistic interactions between Fe-MOF and the hydrogen donor facilitates hydrogenation reactions and enhances the viscosity-reducing effect. This study provides a novel strategy for boosting heavy oil recovery and underscores the potential of 2D MOFs in catalytic pyrolysis applications.

Deposition in natural gas pipelines is an issue of enormous economic and security consequences. In the past, corrosion products, elemental sulfur, hydrates and sand were common deposits in these pipelines. This study demonstrates for the first time the emulsion gel-like structure of deposit collected from Long Gang gas field in Sichuan, China. Rheological testing, thermal stability analysis, oil-water-solid three-phase ratio analysis, microscopic observations, and oil composition analysis were used for further investigation of the microstructure and macro-properties. The results suggest that the deposit has a water-in-oil emulsion structure with a high internal phase. It is extremely stable at room temperature but quickly separates into the water (79.1 wt%), oil (20.3 wt%), and solid (0.6 wt%) fractions at 80 °C. Resins and asphaltenes are two major components of the oil fraction, and they play an important role in deposit formation by strengthening the interfacial film between the oil and water phases. We speculate that the accumulation of deposits in pipelines is attributed to the emulsification of oilfield chemicals with water, hydrocarbons, natural minerals, and other gas well products under the influence of high temperature, pressure, and flow rate, among others. Finally, we provide a possible solution to deal with the deposit. The results reported in this study are expected to be useful in the development of pipeline cleaning techniques and in minimizing deposit formation.

Hydrate formation is one of the major flow assurance issues for the subsea multiphase pipelines. The effects of the interaction between heavy fractions of crude oil components on hydrate behaviors are still not well understood. In this study, the effects of resins on hydrate formation behaviors in asphaltene-containing emulsions were investigated using a high-pressure reactor apparatus. The results indicated that both resins and asphaltenes inhibited hydrate nucleation and increased the induction time. Furthermore, considerable synergistic effects of asphaltenes and resins on the hydrate formation behaviors were discovered in the water-in-oil emulsions, depending on the aggregation state of asphaltenes. The addition of resins was observed to disperse the asphaltene aggregates significantly and enhance the inhibitory effect of asphaltenes on hydrate nucleation. Additionally, the calculated results of gas consumption showed that the presence of resins can decrease the growth rate of hydrates in the asphaltene-containing emulsions. A potential mechanism was presented to illustrate how resins affect hydrate formation in an emulsion with varying asphaltene aggregation states. These findings offer a better knowledge of the synergistic effects between the heavy components of resins and asphaltenes and have potential application in the hydrate management of crude oil pipelines.

The presence of asphaltene, especially in heavy crude oil, causes difficulties in the de-watering/desalting process, which is the initial step of crude oil pretreatment. This study investigates the effect of asphaltenes on the stability of crude oil emulsions using a simulated oil system composed of toluene and n-heptane. It was found that asphaltenes behave like conventional surfactants, adsorbing at the oil–water interface and reducing interfacial tension. The critical aggregation concentration (CAC) of W/O emulsions formed from a toluene and n-heptane mixture (7:3 volume ratio) was found to be 0.05 g/L. When the asphaltene concentration was greater than CAC, the asphaltene aggregated into clusters, forming a viscoelastic interface film that enhanced the strength of the emulsion droplets. At an asphaltene concentration of 0.01 g/L, the storage modulus (G′) and loss modulus (G″) were 1.12 Pa·s and 8.94 Pa·s, respectively. The storage modulus G′ was less than the loss modulus G″, indicating that the viscoelastic nature of the emulsion, and both the G′ and G″ of the emulsions increased with the increasing asphaltene concentration. When the concentration reached 11 g/L, G′ and G″ were 1033 Pa·s and 416 Pa·s, respectively, with G′ exceeding G″, indicating that the emulsion became more stable. Moreover, increasing the solvent aromaticity led to a rise in the CAC of asphaltene, which was favorable for breaking emulsions. The findings imply that reducing the asphaltene content at the interfaces of oil–water by adding an aromatic solvent or blending with light crude oil is a feasible way to break the emulsion and further dewater and desalt.

Abstract In order to understand the structure of asphaltene after its disaggregating by chemical processing, a comprehensive study for exploring the structural changes of asphaltene after acylation as a case of chemical processing was conducted. Functional groups, crystal parameters, hydrogen types, and micromorphology of acylated asphaltenes were analyzed by FT-IR, XPS, XRD, 1 H NMR, SEM and IFM (inverted fluorescence microscope) methods. Additionally, fluorescence spectroscopy methods were performed to analyze the effect of acylation on the aggregation ability of asphaltene. Experimental results indicated that the C=O double bond was enhanced and the content of O–C=O was increased on the surface of acylated asphaltene. The number of stacking layers and the aggregate size of asphaltene decreased obviously after acylation. Fluorescence spectral analysis showed that the critical aggregation concentration of acylated asphaltenes increased compared to the raw asphaltenes. These results indicate that acylation reaction can disaggregate asphaltenes and hinder their re-aggregation in a solution. The disaggregation effect of asphaltene acylation can be attributed to the weakening of a hydrogen bonding and enhancement of a steric hindrance in the asphaltene molecule. This study provided the further understanding of the structural changes of asphaltene after the chemical treatment.

Supercritical CO2 (scCO2) extraction exerts a significant effect on the physicochemical characteristics of crude oil. This work focuses on the role that waxes and asphaltenes played in the scCO2 extraction effect. The extraction rate, hydrocarbon composition, wax precipitation characteristics, conductivity, and centrifugal stability are quantitatively characterized. It is found that the extraction rate of model oil without paraffin wax is the highest after scCO2 treatment, approximately 18.3%. When the paraffin wax content is enlarged from 5.0 to 15.0 wt %, the extraction rate decreases from 16.7% to 11.7%. It is indicated that the presence of wax inhibits the extraction effect of scCO2. In addition, with further addition of asphaltenes, the extraction rate increases and then decreases. This manifests that the addition of asphaltene promotes the extraction effect of scCO2, while the combined effect of waxes and asphaltenes inhibits the extraction effect with the further increase of the asphaltene concentration. Considering the wax precipitation characteristics, the wax appearance temperature (WAT) and wax precipitation amount (WPA) are both increased after scCO2 treatment. With the addition of asphaltene, the WAT and WPA of model oil are both decreased. As for wax crystal morphology, the wax crystals in paraffin wax oil become finer after the treatment, and the amount of wax crystals precipitated increases. Lastly, after scCO2 treatment, the conductivity and absorbance of model oil containing asphaltene decrease, while the light transmittance increases, due to the formation of asphaltene aggregates under scCO2.

Based on dispersing the stacking structure of asphaltenes and inhibiting the reaggregation of asphaltenes, functional chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) derivatives were prepared using COS in this study. Driven by the conjugated intercalation of aromatic rings, COS derivatives could move among the lamellae of asphaltene stacked structures. The effect of COS derivatives on asphaltene aggregates for face-to-face stacking and the inner diameter of the aromatic sheet was characterized by X-ray diffraction and Raman. The microstructure of asphaltene in this mode of interaction could be observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The effect of COS derivatives on the stacking structure and aggregation behavior of asphaltenes could enhance the fluidity of heavy oil, resulting in a change in the viscosity-temperature curve of heavy oil. This demonstrates the enormous research value of COS derivatives in the extraction and transportation of heavy oil.

The changes in the stability of asphaltene in crude oil will give rise to its aggregation, coalescence and deposition from crude oil. The preferred method for improving asphaltene stability is the addition of asphaltene inhibitor (ASIN). The interactions between asphaltene and six inhibitors (S1-S6) were investigated from effects of the ASIN molecular properties such as the acidity, the relative positions of polar and non-polar groups on the benzene ring, and molecular size on the effectiveness of ASIN. The effectiveness, asphaltene aggregation number and degree of solvation for the asphaltene of Canadian oil sand bitumens (COSB) in heptol with or without ASIN were obtained by the solution viscosity and spectrophotometric measurements. The groups impacting the inhibitor effectiveness from high to low are sulfonic acid group, hydroxyl group and the amine group attached to the benzene ring. The interaction between the boric acid group in S5 and asphaltene is stronger than that between sulfonic acid group in S6 and asphaltene, indicating that the spatial protection to asphaltene by macromolecular chains of S5 relative to acidity is expected to prevail. Because of their suitable spatial structure, the inhibitor molecules with the polar and nonpolar groups located at the para-position of the benzene ring are more favorable to inducing dense arrangement of inhibitor molecules on asphaltene and thus provide a stronger protective effect for asphaltene. Viscosity measurements showed that the aggregation number of asphaltene in heptol with inhibitors decreased and the solvation constant increased, leading to improve the compatibility of asphaltene aggregates with solvents.
