Adding phase change materials (PCMs) to asphalt pavements can effectively reduce temperature sensitivity and delay snow and ice accumulation. This study aims to develop solid-solid phase change materials (SSPCMs) for asphalt pavements, with a focus on winter road de-icing. First, the suitability of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMEG) with varying molecular weights as soft segments was systematically evaluated based on phase change performance, thermal stability, phase change cycling stability, and specific heat capacity. SSPCMs were synthesized using a two-step solution polymerization method, with successful synthesis confirmed by FTIR analysis. The influence of different soft-to-hard segment ratios on phase change performance was also examined. PTMEG2000 exhibited excellent performance, with an exothermic phase change temperature range from 8.5°C to -1.2°C and an enthalpy of 94.3 J/g. Its thermal decomposition onset temperature was 266.05°C, and its performance remained stable after 20 thermal cycles. The incorporation of hard segments led to a reduction in both phase change enthalpy and the initial phase change temperature. At a molar ratio of 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) to PTMEG2000 of 2.4:1, the phase change temperature range was 4.1°C to -5.1°C, with an enthalpy of 37.1 J/g, demonstrating great potential as a de-icing material for roads in cold climates.

The formation of ice on pavement in winter has a negative impact on road traffic safety . This study improves the anti-icing property of pavements by preparing a superhydrophobic coating for asphalt pavements to ensure traffic safety. Here, a superhydrophobic coating with a hierarchical structure (SCH) was prepared using a resin, nano-silica powder, and other materials. The maximum contact angle was 160.5°. Through scanning electron microscope , confocal 3D microscope, and contact angle tests , it was observed that the SCH has the most complex surface texture ( R a =16.69 μm, R z =65.02 μm) and significant hydrophobic performance (contact angle=160.5°) than the superhydrophobic coating with a single-level structure surface (SCM, SCN). Based on the ice-road shear adhesion theoretical results and ice-road shear test results, it can be concluded that, at a temperature of −10 °C, SCH with a hierarchical surface structure has stronger anti-icing property than SCM and SCN. Pavement friction tests reveal that SCH has a minimal impact on the friction coefficient ( μ =0.643), still meeting the requirements for anti-skid property. Furthermore, accelerated wear tests indicate that SCH maintains sufficient wear resistance on the pavement. After accelerated wear tests, compared with SCM and SCN, it still has the best anti-icing property. SCH exhibits significant hydrophobic, anti-icing, anti-skid, and anti-wear properties, providing reference for the development and implementation of novel anti-icing technologies for pavement.

Cracking in asphalt pavement may lead to structural distress while existing crack repair materials have significant shortcomings in terms of cost and construction efficiency. This study incorporates mineral powder into the polyurethane grouting materials to provide a more economical and durable solution for repairing cracks in asphalt pavement. The results of bonding and tensile tests show that excessive mineral powder may deteriorate the mechanical properties of polyurethane grouting materials, which is caused by the agglomeration of mineral powder observed by the microscale characterization. Characterization tests indicate that ultraviolet exposure results in the evolution of the chemical components and thermal stability of polyurethane grouting materials, subsequently causing the degeneration in the mechanical properties. The addition of mineral powders was found to increase the tensile strength of polyurethane grouting materials after Ultraviolet aging by 12 %, while the elongation at break measured in tensile tests remained essentially unchanged. The results of the splitting test, bending test, and immersion Marshall test prove the enhanced low-temperature property and moisture resistance of mineral powder-modified polyurethane grouting materials as compared to the styrene-butadiene-styrene emulsified asphalt. The economic analysis shows that this study presents a practical approach to cost-effective asphalt pavement crack repair, offering insights for enhancing the durability of asphalt pavements.

Effective cool pavement technologies with using phase change materials (PCMs) are of great significance to alleviate Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect and improve the functionality, safety and service life of asphalt pavements. This study focuses on the development of polyurethanes (PUs) as solid–solid PCMs (s-s PCMs) that are suitable for asphalt pavement cooling utilizations. First, a range of PUs were synthesized through two-step polymerization reactions. Successful synthesis was confirmed by the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy test. Next, characterizations were performed on the synthesized PUs. It is demonstrated that a PU with a larger isocyanate content usually sustains a higher temperature without liquid leakage. The applicable s-s PCM among the synthesized PUs is M_PU5 with 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) as the isocyanate and the molar ratio of MDI and polyethylene glycol (PEG) being 5, due to its desirable latent heat storage capacity of 93.5 J·g −1 and phase change temperatures of 36–48.3 °C, excellent thermal stability and reliability, and its strong ability to withstand harsh conditions of asphalt pavements. Finally, the feasibility of M_PU5 for actively cooling asphalt pavements has been verified by outdoor test. The investigated results provide a basis and reference for building cool asphalt pavement systems with using s-s PCMs.

Currently, functional pavement materials become a research hotpot for road researchers. This paper aims to develop a phase change heat storage asphalt pavement material and then design phase change heat storage asphalt mixtures with active cooling ability. The synthesized polyurethane-based solid–solid phase change material (PUSSPCM) with suitable phase change temperatures, desirable thermal energy storage capacity and excellent phase change cycling stability can meet the active cooling demand of asphalt pavement. There are also excellent leakage resistance, volume stability and chemical stability that enable withstanding the harsh condition of asphalt pavement. Therefore, the PUSSPCM can be considered as a promising phase change filler. Subsequently, the phase change heat storage asphalt mixtures are prepared by the equal volume replacements of limestone filler with PUSSPCM. The replacements can improve the high-temperature stability and low-temperature cracking resistance whereas weaken the water stability of an asphalt mixture. When the replacement amount is no more than 40 vol%, the phase change mixtures can satisfy the pavement performance requirements. The replacements increase the heat absorption capacity but decrease the heat transfer rate, which leads to decrease in the temperature rising rate of the asphalt mixture with more PUSSPCM.

The melting of permafrost can cause serious damage to road structures. This study prepares a phase change geotextile (PCG) with heat absorption and waterproofing properties and proposes a new type of cooling structure called a phase change energy storage embankment (PCESE). A finite element model of the road is established to quantify the artificial permafrost table (APT), mean annual ground temperature (MAGT) at the bottom of the embankment, and mean daily cooling rate (MDCR) of the asphalt pavement surface under different PCESE structures. This study focuses on exploring the effects of the type of epoxy resin composite phase change material (ERPCM), dosage of ERPCM , and position of the PCG on various indices. The Entropy-TOPSIS method is used to evaluate the comprehensive performance of the PCESE and determine the optimal structure and optimization strategy. The results demonstrate that the addition of PCG to an embankment always improves the APT and MDCR, but does not necessarily reduce the MAGT. The optimal type of ERPCM , dosage of ERPCM , and position of PCG are ERPCM2, 12 kg/m 2 , and 3.0 m, respectively. The dosage of the ERPCM had the highest positive correlation with comprehensive performance. Considering the distribution of comprehensive performance and coefficient of variation under different structures, the recommended type of ERPCM, dosage of ERPCM, and position of the PCG are ERPCM1, 12 kg/m 2 , and 2.5 m, respectively.

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) demonstrates significant advantages in asphalt pavement thermal regulation owing to high latent heat and adjustable phase transition temperatures. However, its limitations, including liquid-phase leakage and low thermal conductivity, restrict practical applications. This study developed a functionalized expanded graphite (FEG) matrix via acid oxidation, where oxygen-containing groups establish hydrogen bonds with PEG, forming PEG/FEG CPCM with enhanced thermal conductivity and encapsulation stability. Structural characterization showed FEG interlayer spacing increased from 0.3379 nm to 0.3439 nm, with surface oxygen content rising from 2.66 % to 12.33 % (predominantly −OH/−COOH groups). Hydrogen bonds forming between FEG and PEG restrict molecular chain migration, thereby improving encapsulation stability. The optimized PEG/FEG CPCM exhibited latent heats of 141.60 J/g (melting) and 134.12 J/g (crystallization), a 24.9 % lower supercooling degree (11.39°C vs. 15.17°C), and 11.58-fold higher thermal conductivity (3.6257 W/(m·K) vs. 0.3132 W/(m·K)) compared to pure PEG. Hydrogen bonding increased the decomposition temperature of PEG/FEG CPCM by 10.7°C to 306.4°C, with only a 0.9 % reduction in phase transition temperature and a 1.0 % latent heat loss after 100 thermal cycles. Field tests showed that PEG/FEG-modified asphalt mixtures extended heating/cooling durations by 2.1 %/15.0 %, mitigating pavement thermal distress. The study advances the application of PEG-based CPCMs to enhance pavement durability, mitigate UHI effects, and conserve energy.

Phase change materials (PCMs) hold promising potential for regulating asphalt pavement temperatures during the summer. To enhance the suitability of polyurethane-based solid–solid phase change materials (PUSSPCMs), this study focuses on optimizing their structure and performance. A series of PUSSPCMs were synthesized with varying soft-to-hard segment ratios and soft segment molecular weights. Their high-temperature leakage resistance, phase change behavior and thermal stability were systematically evaluated, to identify the optimal formulations. Subsequently, a SMA-13 phase change asphalt mixture incorporating a selected PUSSPCM was designed. The effect of the PUSSPCM, as a functional filler, on both the pavement and thermal properties of the mixture was evaluated. Results indicate that the PUSSPCM structure critically affects leakage resistance at elevated temperatures. Increasing the hard segment content significantly improves leakage resistance, enabling the PUSSPCM to maintain structural integrity during the high-temperature paving of phase change asphalt mixtures. A higher molecular weight of polyethylene glycol (PEG) requires a correspondingly higher proportion of hard segments for leakage prevention. An increase in PEG molecular weight or soft-to-hard segment ratio usually leads to elevated phase change temperature and enthalpy. Irrespective of the composition, PUSSPCMs can perform excellent volumetric, chemical, and phase transition stability during hot-mix asphalt construction. P8000–6 as a preferred PUSSPCM enhances high-temperature stability and low-temperature crack resistance, but reduces the moisture resistance of the asphalt mixture. The phase change asphalt mixture exhibits a reduced heating rate, maintaining a temperature difference of over 3 °C for up to 250 min, with a maximum difference of 3.7 °C. The addition of P8000–6 functional filler has minimal impact on the thermal conductivity of the asphalt mixture. However, it effectively moderates temperature fluctuations during heating by increasing the heat absorption capacity.

The interfacial compatibility and fusion behaviors of emulsified asphalt and aged asphalt on reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) aggregates greatly affects cold recycled mixture’s properties. To evaluate the compatibility and reveal fusion mechanism between shape-memory hydrogenated epoxy modified emulsified asphalt (SHEA) and aged asphalt on RAP aggregates, fused asphalt specimens were prepared. The dynamic evolution changes in molecular weight, surficial morphology, micromechanical characteristics, chemical composition and phase structure of asphalt specimens during the fusion progress were investigated. Results indicate that a concentration gradient occurs between SHEA and aged asphalt, where high-molecular-weight components from aged asphalt diffuse into SHEA, promoting molecular-level compatibility. This compatibility exhibits a more uniform molecular distribution, enrichment of long-chain structures, reduced asphaltenes content, and improved overall performance. Also, long-chain SMHE molecules in SHEA form complex aggregations with aged asphalt. Three-dimensional SMHE network permeates into asphalt matrix, filling voids and contributing to reduced surface roughness, decreased hardness, and improved viscoelasticity. The surficial undulation of fused specimen is small, and its viscoelasticity is restored. The presence of –C–O– and sulfoxide absorption peaks indicates that chemical reaction between SHEA and aged asphalt occurs, resulting in uniform fusion at a molecular level. Next, X-ray diffraction reveals significant changes in interplanar spacing and crystallite size. Crystalline structures resembling MoS₂ and sodium silver chloride are identified in fused asphalt, further supporting molecular-level interaction between the above components. These findings offer a theoretical basis for performance enhancement of SHEA cold recycled mixture.
