N-(1,3-Dimethylbutyl)-N′-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine-quinone (6PPD-Q) has been identified as the cause of the “urban runoff mortality syndrome.” Thus, the ecological risks of substituted p-phenylenediamines (PPDs) and their quinone derivatives (PPD-Qs) in water have gained global attention. However, large-scale observation of their pollution characteristics in surface water is still lacking. Herein, a nationwide investigation revealed the pervasive occurrence of PPDs and PPD-Qs in riverine waters across China, with the mean concentration of ∑5PPD-Qs being 4.9 times higher than their parent ∑5PPDs. Notably, the 6PPD-Q concentrations at eight sampling sites exceeded the median lethal concentration for coho salmon. National annual riverine fluxes were estimated at 113.1 and 276.2 tonnes/year for PPDs and PPD-Qs, respectively, with the Yangtze River contributing more than one-third of the total fluxes. The transformation of PPDs to PPD-Qs was dependent on atmospheric hydroxylation rates and the half-lives of PPDs. A combined multimedia exposure assessment revealed that water exposure accounted for 82.5% of human exposure to PPDs and PPD-Qs, surpassing the contributions from dust and air exposure. This study provides a comprehensive spatial picture of PPDs and PPD-Qs in China. The national atlas highlights their potential ecological risks and implies that targeted actions should be taken to mitigate potential exposure to PPDs and PPD-Qs.

A total of 17 groups of wastewaters from the chemical industrial parks and matched receiving river waters were collected in the east of China. The measured total concentrations of 21 analyzed PFAS analogues (∑ 21 PFAS) in the influents and effluents of the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were in the range of 0.172–20.6 μg/L (mean: 18.2 μg/L, median: 3.9 μg/L) and 0.167–93.6 μg/L (mean: 10.8 μg/L, median: 1.12 μg/L), respectively, which were significantly higher than those observed in the upstream (range: 0.0158–7.05 μg/L, mean: 1.09 μg/L, median: 0.482 μg/L) and downstream (range: 0.0237–1.82 μg/L, mean: 0.697 μg/L, median: 0.774 μg/L) receiving waters. Despite the concentrations and composition profiles of PFAS varied in the water samples from different sampling sites, PFOA was generally the major PFAS analogue in the research areas, mainly due to the history of PFOA production and usage as well as the specific exemptions. The calculated concentration ratios of the short-chain PFCAs and PFSAs to their respective predecessors (PFOA and PFOS) in most of the samples far exceeded 1, indicating a shift from legacy PFOA and PFOS to short-chain PFAS in the research areas. Correlation network analysis and the calculated concentration ratios of PFAS in the effluents versus influents indicated transformation may have occurred during the water treatment processes and PFAS could not be efficiently removed in the WWTPs. Wastewater discharge of chemical industrial parks is a vital source of PFAS dispersed into the aquatic environment.

The city-river-reservoir system is an important system for safeguarding drinking water. Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are emerging contaminants in drinking water sources that are gaining attention, and they could pose risks to human health and aquatic organisms. In this study, field studies that lasted four years were conducted to analyze the concentrations, spatial-temporal distribution, and removal effects of six PAEs. The total concentrations of the Σ6PAEs in the water and sediment samples were 0.2–7.4 μg L −1 (mean: 1.3 μg L −1 ) and 9.2–9594.1 ng g −1 (mean: 847.5 ng g −1 ), respectively. Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) and, bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) were the predominant congeners, accounting for 57.2 % in the water samples and 94.1 % in the sediment samples. The urban area contributed 72 % of the PAEs in the system. A significant removal effect of PAEs was observed in the wetland, with a removal rate of 40.2 %. The partitioning of PAEs between the water and sediment was attributed to the removal of dimethyl phthalate and diethyl phthalate that occurred during the water phase, while the removal of DBP and DEHP primarily occurred during the sediment phase. The ecological risk calculation based on the sensitivity distribution model indicated that DBP (HQ water = 0.19, HQ sediment = 0.46) and DEHP (HQ water = 0.20, HQ sediment = 0.13) possessed moderate risks according to some water and sediment samples. The ecological projects were verified to be effective engineering strategies to reduce ecological risk in the drinking water source.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a powerful analytical tool for detecting trace pollutants due to its molecular fingerprint specificity and single-molecule sensitivity. However, conventional two-dimensional gap-enhanced substrates suffer from limited analyte diffusion into nanogap caused by plasmonic material hydrophobicity. Herein, we present a V-shaped SERS substrate designed to overcome these challenges through three synergistic mechanisms: (i) three-dimensional (3D) plasmonic nanogaps, (ii) gravity-driven analyte enrichment enabling efficient aqueous-phase molecule transport, and (iii) light-trapping nanopores amplifying electromagnetic fields. By utilizing atomic layer deposition (ALD)-defined ultrathin alumina sacrificial layers, we achieved precisely tunable nanogaps (2–10 nm) between gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and the underlying gold film (Au) within V-shaped architectures. The optimized 6 nm AuNPs-gap-Au nanostructure balances near-field intensity and aqueous analyte accessibility, achieving sub-nanomolar sensitivity for rhodamine 6G with outstanding reproducibility (RSD < 9 % across 10 −9 –10 −5 M). Significantly, the substrate enables multiplex detection of dye pollutants (basic blue 3, malachite green, methylene blue) at sub-nanomolar level in river water, showing great potential for real-time, on-site monitoring of emerging pollutants in natural water systems.

The peroxymonosulfate (PMS) process may be hindered severely due to natural organic matter (NOM) conversion in the treatment of emerging pollutants from river water, becoming a critical engineering and technical issue. In this study, a Fe(II)-induced river water (RW)/PMS catalytic system was constructed for investigating molecular transformation of NOM and related influence mechanism to sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS) analysis indicated that NOM molecules containing no more than one heteroatom in river may be attacked by hydroxyl radicals ( OH) and then polymerized, converting into molecules with two or three heteroatoms during PMS oxidation. Based on the correlation analysis, CHONP-NOM, CHOSP-NOM and CHONSP-NOM showed a significant inhibition against SMX degradation, while CHONS-NOM exhibited a moderate inhibitory effect. Besides, more condensed aromatic structures, carbohydrates and tannins were generated via reactive species ( OH and sulfate radicals (SO 4 − )) oxidation, radical addition and polymerization reactions. Notably, condensed aromatic structures, carbohydrates and tannins presented weak, modest and strong inhibition to SMX degradation, respectively. Based on the current results, the inhibition of target pollutants degradation would be mitigated via regulation of NOM molecules in a Fe(II)-induced PMS activation system, providing valuable information to reduce NOM impact. In addition, this study paves the way to achieve efficient removal of emerging pollutants from river water.

Photocatalytic disinfection is a promising way to combat bacterial pollution in the water environment. Inefficient use of visible light and undirected diffusion of reactive oxygen species (ROS) reduce photocatalytic disinfection efficiency. Herein, inspired by the concentrating effect of convex lens, photocatalysts with particular “nano-magnifying glass effect” (TCNMgNOs) were designed by embedding magnesium oxide with “converge effect” into the tailored hierarchical triple-shell porous g-C 3 N 4 with “one light multi-purpose effect” to boost the visible-light utilization. Meanwhile, the ATPase hydrolysis homeostasis of bacteria was destroyed by TCNMgNOs to achieve the targeted movement of ROS. The results confirmed that the photocatalytic sterilization efficiency of TCNMgNOs was amplified by 30 times over g-C 3 N 4 , which was achieved by focusing visible light, multiple reflecting visible light and light transmission within the porous thin shells as well as the “addictive sterilization mechanism”. The sterilization efficiency still maintains 98.8 % (15 min) after 6 rounds recycling and reusing in practical river water disinfection . A novel pathway for fighting against microbial contaminants in natural water was explored.
