Electricity-pulse-sparked rapid combustion of diesel soot on conductive LaCoO3 catalysts

Wei Zhao,Ruixuan Weng,Huimin Shi,Xueyi Mei,Weiming Nie,Yexin Zhang,Zhaoliang Zhang,Ying Xin,Peng Lu,Jian Zhang,Pu-Xian Gao

In coping with the rapid emission of massive soot particles during the cold starts of diesel vehicles, achieving rapid catalytic soot combustion at low temperatures is a formidable challenge. Herein, we developed an electricity-pulse-sparked catalysis (EPSC) strategy on a conductive LaCoO 3 perovskite catalyst, creating instantaneous soot combustion. As soon as 800 J of electricity pulse is applied, approximately 80 % of soot is combusted within 1 min at <300 °C, exhibiting the higher reaction rates (180−1300 µmol g cat −1 s −1 ) and energy efficiencies (18−100 g soot kWh −1 ) than previously reported results for catalytic soot combustion. Moreover, the EPSC eliminates the gap of contact between soot and catalyst that is a longstanding bottleneck for the specific solid (soot)-solid (catalyst)-gas (O 2 ) reaction, which can be synchronized with the frequently engine start/stop operations, demonstrating potential to address the challenges of soot emissions for hybrid powers.

The interaction effect of catalyst and ash on diesel soot oxidation by thermogravimetric analysis

Jia Fang,Rong Shi,Zhongwei Meng,Yuan Jiang,Zihan Qin,Qian Zhang,Yuan Qin,Jie Tan,Weilian Bai

The interaction effect of catalyst and ash on commercial carbon black (Printex U, PU) oxidation is investigated using non-isothermal thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The presence of commercial catalysts TiO 2 and CeO 2 decrease the start, peak and end temperatures of soot oxidation, and increase the comprehensive oxidation index. Compared with PU/TiO 2 mixture, PU/CeO 2 mixture has lower activation energy and higher comprehensive oxidation index because CeO 2 has the higher oxygen storage and better active oxygen generation capacities. The impact of CeO 2 is shown to be the most significant at 1:5 wt ratio between soot and catalyst among various ratios. Compared with pure PU, the comprehensive oxidation index for 1:5 wt ratio of PU/CeO 2 increases from 0.97*10 −7 % 2 min −2  °C −3 to 1.58*10 −7 % 2 min −2  °C −3 . The comprehensive oxidation index can further increase by adding ashes. Compared with PU/CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 , PU/CeO 2 /MgO and PU/CeO 2 /CaSO 4 mixtures, PU/CeO 2 /ZnO mixture has the maximum comprehensive oxidation index. The most significant impact of potential ash on PU/CeO2 is observed with 1:5:5 wt ratio of PU/CeO 2 /ZnO among soot, catalyst and ash, which has the maximum comprehensive oxidation index 2.41*10 −7 % 2 min −2  °C −3 . The comprehensive oxidation index of 1:5:5 wt ratio of PU/CeO 2 /ZnO increases by 148% compared with pure PU. This work is beneficial to demonstrate the interaction mechanism of the catalyst and ash on soot oxidation process under O 2 /N 2 atmosphere.

Novel Carbon Nanoparticles Derived from Biodiesel Soot as Lubricant Additives

Chuan Li,Mingling Li,Xinyun Wang,Weimin Feng,Qiangqiang Zhang,Bo Wu,Xianguo Hu

The objective of this study was to investigate the roles and tribological mechanisms of onion-like carbon nanoparticles derived from biodiesel soot (BDS) when applied in water (H2O) and liquid paraffin (LP). In this study, we prepared nitric acid-treated BDS (NA-BDS) as an additive to H2O and NA-BDS modified with oleylamine (NA-BDS-OLA) as an additive to LP. Raman spectroscopy, field-emission transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and zeta potentiometry were used to characterize the results of the nitric acid treatment and oleylamine modification. The tribological behaviors and corresponding mechanisms of the new onion-like carbon nanoparticles were evaluated using a ball-on-disc reciprocating tribometer, as well as field-emission scanning electron microscopy, three-dimensional laser scanning microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The results indicated that the additives NA-BDS and NA-BDS-OLA, which were onion-like carbon nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 35 to 40 nm, enhanced the antiwear and friction reduction properties of H2O and LP, respectively. Through tribo-mechanisms, these types of soot can serve as spacers and ball bearings between the rubbing surfaces. Moreover, exfoliation under a high load as a result of the formation of a graphitic layer facilitates easy shearing. Keywords:biodiesel soot;carbon nanoparticles;onion-like;lubricant additive

Synergistic Effect of Pt and Dual Ni/Co Cations in Hydrotalcite-Derived Pt/Ni1.5Co0.5AlO Catalysts for Promoting Soot Combustion

Yilin Zhang,Peng Zhang,Jing Xiong,Yuanfeng Li,Yaxiao Ma,Sicheng Zhang,Zhen Zhao,Jian Liu,Yuechang Wei

In this article, the catalysts of hydrotalcite-derived Ni1.5Co0.5AlO nanosheet-supported highly dispersed Pt nanoparticles (Ptn/Ni1.5Co0.5AlO, where n% is the weigh percentage of the Pt element in the catalysts) were elaborately fabricated by the gas-bubble-assisted membrane--reduction method. The specific porous structure formed by the stack of hydrotalcite-derived Ni1.5Co0.5AlO nanosheets can increase the transfer mass efficiency of the reactants (O2, NO, and soot) and the strong Pt–Ni1.5Co0.5AlO interaction can weaken the Ni/Co-O bond for promoting the mobility of lattice oxygen and the formation of surface-oxygen vacancies. The Ptn/Ni1.5Co0.5AlO catalysts exhibited excellent catalytic activity and stability during diesel soot combustion under the loose contact mode between soot particles and catalysts. Among all the catalysts, the Pt2/Ni1.5Co0.5AlO catalyst showed the highest catalytic activities for soot combustion (T50= 350 °C, TOF = 6.63 × 10−3s−1). Based on the characterization results, the catalytic mechanism for soot combustion is proposed: the synergistic effect of Pt and dual Ni/Co cations in the Pt/Ni1.5Co0.5AlO catalysts can promote the vital step of catalyzing NO oxidation to NO2in the NO-assisted soot oxidation mechanism. This insight into the synergistic effect of Pt and dual Ni/Co cations for soot combustion provides new strategies for reducing the amounts of noble metals in high-efficient catalysts.

An integrated ZnO–SnO2 n–n heterostructure strategy of catalysts and ash for promoting diesel soot combustion

Fang Jia,Xu Xilong,Yang Yi,Han Zhiqiang,Zuo Zinong,Han Weiqiang,Lin Bin

Effective removal of soot deposited in diesel particulate filter by catalysts has attracted great attention in the aftertreatment field to achieve environment protection, but the problem is short by incomplete and poor soot combustion. Herein, an integrated ZnO–SnO 2 semiconductor n–n heterostructure strategy of catalysts and ash is proposed for promoting diesel soot combustion. The integrated effects of different catalysts and ZnO ash on soot oxidation are studied with thermogravimetric analysis and gas emission analysis. The diesel soot is simulated by Printex U (PU) particles, and the catalysts include SnO 2 , ZrO 2 , TiO 2 , CeO 2 and Pt/Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles. Compared with other catalysts, the best catalytic effect on soot oxidation is achieved when SnO 2 catalyst is mixed with PU/ZnO at 1:1:1 mass ratio in tight contact method. The S and R w indexes reach the largest values of 9.33 × 10 –8 % 2  min −2 ℃ −3 and 38.64 × 10 5 , and the CO 2 amount reaches the maximum value at 3462 ppm, which is correspondingly with the XRD and XPS spectrum results of PU/ZnO/SnO 2 with ZnO–SnO 2 heterojunction structure having more adsorbed oxygen. The excessive catalyst is negative to the heat and oxygen transfer among the nanoparticles. When the mass ratio of PU/ZnO/SnO 2 is 1:1:1, the soot combustion presents the comparatively superior state. The results of this study innovate the soot oxidation influenced by catalyst and ash, which benefits the optimization of passive regeneration strategy in DPF application.

Study on emission characteristics of tracer pollutants in cooking oil fumes

Zhanghua Liu,Jianbing Su,Aojuan Ma,Aixue Zhu,Pengyan Liu

In this study, the following 5 kinds of tracer pollutants of cooking oil fumes were selected: palmitic acid , stearic acid , cholesterol, stigmasterol and β-sitosterol, and an effective method of their extraction, separation, enrichment and determination was established considering the conditions of the low-altitude exhaust and the condensation of cooking fumes. Five tracer pollutants were determined both in the PM 2.5 and gas phases from college canteen exhaust and in waste oil condensed from fumes of different edible oils in households. It was found that the amount of palmitic acid was higher than that of stearic acid in the same sample; the emission characteristics of 5 substances in condensed grease samples from different oils varied considerably; compared with palmitic acid and stearic acid, 3 sterols (cholesterol, stigmasterol and β-sitosterol) are more characteristic as tracers of cooking oil fumes. The results provide technical and methodological references for the contribution and traceability analysis of catering source exhaust in air pollution source apportionment .

Insight into catalytic activity of K-Ce catalysts and K-Ce based mixed catalysts on diesel soot combustion

Chengcheng Yi,Jia Fang,Ping Pu,Yi Yang,Zong Chen,Zinong Zuo,Zhiqiang Han

A series of K-Ce catalysts with different K/(K+Ce) molar ratios are successfully prepared by hydrothermal method, to optimize catalyst diesel particlate filter (CDPF) regeneration efficiency of soot elimination. The K-Ce catalyst is an excellent promoter for soot combustion by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and the KC-0.2 catalyst has the best catalytic activity because proper K ions lead to more oxygen vacancies and improve contact efficiency with soot. This result corresponds well to characterization analysis, such as XRD, SEM and XPS. In a 10%O 2 /90%N 2 atmosphere, the KC-0.2 has the highest average mass loss rate ( W mean ), maximum mass loss rate ( W max ) and combustion stability index ( R w ). The weight ratios of the soot/KC-0.2 mixture are less than 1:10, making catalytic oxidation easier for the soot. Thermal aging in static air at 600 °C is used to investigate the catalytic stability of KC-0.2, and the TGA results show that KC-0.2 has good stability at temperatures lower than 600 °C. Compare to KC-0.2, the KC-0.2 based mixed catalyst with ZrO 2 participation is further prepared by mechanical method and has better catalytic activity because the presence of Zr enhances redox surface sites of catalyst. This facilitates the exploration of novel catalysts through combinatorial catalysis.

The chemical components and adhesion performance of the oil fume fouling sourced from cooking: Experimental investigation and molecular simulation

Yang Liu,Jiahua Wang,Yangmeng Pi,Tianle Zhu,Ye Sun,Bin Li

To effectively remove cooking-generated oil fume fouling, it is necessary to understand the chemical compositions of fouling, its evolution in the aging process, and its effects on adhesion performance. In this study, the fouling was simulated using soybean oil. The chemical compositions after undergoing different aging time were analyzed by GC–MS, 1 H NMR, and so on. The interaction energies were investigated by the molecular dynamic simulation. The analysis results showed that fouling composition gradually evolved from linoleic-linoleic-linoleic triglyceride (LLL), palmitic-linoleic-linolenic triglyceride (PLLn), and linoleic-linoleic-oleic triglyceride (LLO) to primary oxidation products (hydroperoxides) and secondary oxidation products (such as epoxides, alcohols, and aldehydes). The simulation found that the interaction energies between molecules in fouling, between fouling layers, and between fouling and substrate increased continuously during aging. The former two were attributed to the increases in van der Waals interactions, while the latter was attributed to the rise in electrostatic interactions caused by oxidation products. Meanwhile, the weakest interaction energy between two fouling layers was a vulnerability of the fouling adhesion process. The experimental measurement of peeling force of fouling layers and fouling-substrate verified the simulation results. These findings can guide the design and development of the cleaning agents for fouling.

Aggregation kinetics of diesel soot nanoparticles in artificial and human sweat solutions: Effects of sweat constituents, pH, and temperature

Jing Li,Xingjian Yang,Zhen Zhang,Harry Xiao,Weimin Sun,Weilin Huang,Yongtao Li,Chengyu Chen,Yan Sun

Soot nanoparticles (SNPs) are airborne contaminants that could potentially penetrate skin, but their aggregation after contact with sweat may lower their health risks. This study investigated SNP aggregation kinetics in 4 artificial sweat standards and 21 human sweat samples. Effects of sweat inorganic (NaCl, Na 2 HPO 4 , and NaH 2 PO 4 ) and organic (L-histidine, lactic acid, and urea) constituents, pH, temperature, and concentrations were examined. Results showed that SNP aggregation rates in 4 standards followed American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC) > British Standard (EN) > International Standard Organization (ISO) pH 5.5 > ISO pH 8.0, and could be described by the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory. The aggregation rates increased with concentrations of SNPs, inorganic salts, L-histidine, and lactic acid, decreased with increasing pH and concentration of urea, and were weakly influenced by temperature. Systematic characterizations revealed SNP adsorption for organic sweat constituents. SNPs aggregated rapidly to ∼1000 nm in AATCC, but remained stable in ISO pH 8.0 and > 14/21 human sweat fluids over 20 min. The SNP aggregation rates correlated negatively with pH ( r = -0.531*) and | ζ potential| ( r = -0.464*) of human sweat samples. Sweat evaporation could promote aggregation of SNPs, hence lowering their potential harm via dermal exposure.

A novel nanocomposite hydrogel with excellent photo-thermal and enhanced antibacterial properties based on China wood oil soot for acute wound healing

Shan Huang,Wen Wang,Yang Liu,Jing Zhang,Weidong Yu,Miaomiao Zi,Huanhuan Liu,Hao Yu,Can Peng

A hydrogel intended for potential use in wound dressing necessitates specific properties, including notable self-healing abilities, mechanical durability, and the ability to combat bacteria to address muscle and skin damage effectively. Moreover, the hydrogel must exhibit superior tissue adhesiveness to ensure seamless integration with the wound tissue during practical application scenarios. In this study, a novel photothermal China wood oil soot (CWOS)--based hydrogel (CH) dressing with high-strength and excellent photothermal performance was developed. Unlike traditional synthetic polymer networks, the novel nano-crosslinker fabricated by the CWOS optimized the dispersion of crosslinking points in the polymer network, resulting in outstanding mechanical properties (2000 % stretchability, 1.88 MPa strength). Massively reversible interactions between metal coordination (Ag-S) and hydrogen bonds gave the hydrogel excellent self-healing behavior. Besides excellent adhesiveness and biocompatible ability, the CH hydrogel combined with near-infrared ray radiation endowed highly antibacterial, alleviated inflammation, promoted angiogenesis, and promoted acute wound healing. Briefly, this multifunctional hydrogel can potentially aid wound healing for patients susceptible to bacterial infections. Its versatile properties offer promising prospects for its application in treating acute wounds.

A CO2-controllable phase change absorbent solvent used to waste recycling of dining lampblack

Wenjian Yue,Xiaojiang Li,Junhao Jing,Li Tong,Na Wang,Hongsheng Lu,Zhiyu Huang

Dining lampblack as a source of atmospheric pollution, urban residents had to spend a lot of economic costs all year round to solve its impact. However, traditional treatment methods often carry the risk of secondary pollution. The use of phase change absorption solvent (PCAS) controlled by CO 2 can effectively absorb the oily components in dining lampblack, and smoothly avoid the generation of secondary pollutants and squandering of resources. The reversibility of PCASs under CO 2 control was explained by pH changes and macroscopic visualizations. The absorption effects of favorable absorbents and PCASs on dining lampblack were compared and analyzed. The fatty acid (FA) in the oil absorption mixture was desorbed by interacting with D230. The results of GC/MS analysis on the oil components separated by desorption showed that the desorption of PCASs was effective for these refractory oil components. FAs can be enriched and applied to the subsequent dining lampblack treatment link to realize the waste recycling. In addition, the absorption and desorption of oily components by PCASs were combined with the CO 2 -controlled phase transformation of PCASs itself to achieve the absorption circulation of treating dining lampblack by using PCASs.

Study on the thermal oxidation of oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids by synchrotron radiation photoionization mass spectrometry

Bing Qian,Yonghua Hu,Minggao Xu,Jiuzhong Yang,Chengyuan Liu,Yang Pan

Rationale Cooking oil fumes contain numerous hazardous and carcinogenic chemicals, posing potential threats to human health. However, the sources of these species remain ambiguous, impeding health risk assessment, pollution control and mechanism research. Methods To address this issue, the thermal oxidation of three common unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs), namely oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids, present in vegetable oils was investigated. The volatile and semi-volatile products were comprehensively characterized by online synchrotron radiation photoionization mass spectrometry (SR-PIMS) with two modes, which were validated and complemented using offline gas chromatography (GC)/MS methods. Tunable SR-PIMS combined with photoionization efficiency curve simulation enabled the recognition of isomers/isobars in gaseous fumes. Results SR-PIMS revealed over 100 products, including aldehydes, alkenes, furans, aromatic hydrocarbons, etc., such as small molecules of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein, ethylene and furan, which are not readily detected by conventional GC/MS; and some unreported fractions, e.g. ketene, 4-ethylcyclohexene and cycloundecene(E), were also observed. Furthermore, real-time monitoring of product emissions during the thermal oxidation of the three UFAs via SR-PIMS revealed that linolenic acid may be the major source of acrolein. Conclusion SR-PIMS has been demonstrated as a powerful technique for online investigation of cooking oil fumes. This study achieved comprehensive characterization of volatile and semi-volatile products from the thermal oxidation of oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids, facilitating the traceability of species in cooking fumes and aiding in exploring the thermal reactions of different vegetable oils.
