Owing to the increasing amount of industrial wastewater and ocean pollution, separation of water and oil from their mixtures and emulsions has been an active area in water treatment industry and in academic research. Using cellulose filter paper as the substrate, a porous superoleophobic membrane (OP) was easily prepared by immersing the paper in an acetonitrile solution of toluene diisocyanate and that of N -(2,4-diaminophenyl) maleimide, alternatively and repeatedly, coating the paper with maleimide-containing polyurea (PU). PU coated paper was then functionalized by 2-[(tris(hydroxymethyl)methyl)amino]-1-ethanesulfonic acid through aza-Michael addition. The formation of PU coating and the subsequent functionalization were confirmed by FTIR, NMR and XPS analyses. The produced OP paper was shown to be superoleophobic and had excellent performance for oil–water separation from their mixtures and emulsions. This study provides therefore a novel protocol for preparation of superoleophobic materials, featuring easy operation, low cost, and in particular, versatile applicability to different natural and synthetic materials.

The unique characteristics of the interface environment that distinguish bulk phases can promote or inhibit certain reactions and significantly change chemical reactivity. In this work, the separation of Rh (III) and Fe (III) on the surface of concentrated hydrochloric acid was studied by a thin-layer oil membrane (TOM) extraction based on laminar flow with 18-Crown-6-ether (18C6) as the extractant. A new phenomenon different from conventional extraction was found. The TOM extraction prefers to identify hydrated Rh (III) anions rather than H 3 O + ions at the interface due to a lower concentration of free hydrated hydrogen ions on the surface of concentrated hydrochloric acid. However, during the conventional extraction, the H 3 O + ions in the bulk phase are preferentially extracted by the 18C6, and then the hydrated rhodium (III) anions could be extracted by the protonated crown ether through the ion association mechanism. Besides, it was found that the TOM extraction could enhance extraction of hydrated rhodium (III) anions by taking advantage of the uniqueness of rhodium species on the interface, and by adjusting the thickness of the oil membrane and the flow rate of the aqueous phase . The decrease in the oil membrane thickness and the increase in the flow rate of the aqueous phase are conducive to the complexation of 18C6 with the hydrated rhodium (III) at the interface, which can better reflect the targeting and the controllability of extracting single species of hydrated rhodium (III) ions at the interface. Considering the applications of selective recovery of Rh (III) from concentrated hydrochloric acid leaching solution of waste automobile catalyst, the selective separability of Rh (III) to other coexisting metal impurity ions such as Fe (III), Cu (II), Co (III) and Ni (II), was also evaluated. This work provides a new strategy for preferential recovery and separation of rhodium in concentrated hydrochloric acid leach solutions containing other base metal ions for possible future's application.

This study proposes a new thin-layer oil membrane (TOM) extraction strategy for enhanced mutual separation of Pd(II) and Pt(IV) chlorocomplex anions in concentrated aqueous hydrochloric acid solutions using di- n -butyl sulfoxide (DBSO) as an extractant. It was discovered that Pd(II) could be preferentially extracted even in concentrated hydrochloric acid solutions. The separation coefficient between Pd(II) and Pt(IV) considerably increased than that between them during conventional extraction using a separating funnel. A new extractor was designed to perform TOM extraction by spreading a thin layer of organic extractant liquid membrane on the surface of aqueous feed solutions under laminar flow . A simplified TOM extraction model and controlled experiments were used to investigate the effect of H + and Cl − ion concentrations on the mutual separation between Pd(II) and Pt(IV). Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to understand the microscopic separation mechanisms at the molecular level. Experimental results revealed that the competitive distribution of H + and Cl − ions in the boundary layer along the normal vertical direction of the organic-aqueous interface are crucial in enhancing the separation between Pd(II) and Pt(IV). The competitive adsorption and enrichment of Cl − ions at the interface prevent DBSO molecules from being protonated by H + ions, which is beneficial for the substituted coordination of DBSO molecules with PdCl 4 2− . However, the ionic association of protonated DBSO molecules with PtCl 6 2− remains dominant at the interface. As a result, even in concentrated hydrochloric acid solutions, the difference in mass transfer between PdCl 4 2− and PtCl 6 2− toward the interface was intensified.

In this work, we investigate the coalescence of emulsion droplets in a controlled electric field. Two contacting droplets stabilized by surfactants can be forced to coalesce into a combined one when the applied voltage is above a critical value. The critical voltages change with the types, concentrations of surfactants and temperature. By exploring the drainage of a thin oil film trapped between emulsions, we interpret that the coalescence occurs as the electric compression overcomes the disjoining pressure barrier and squeezes the film to a critical thickness. Based on this, we have devised an approach to probe the threshold disjoining pressure which can help predict the emulsion stability and surfactant efficacy quantitatively. We have confirmed the validity of our approach for measuring the threshold disjoining pressure by comparing the result with other proven tests that involve centrifugation and thermal heating. Our approach is simple, reliable and robust in predicting emulsion stability and will facilitate the design of emulsion-based formulations by accelerating the testing of emulsion stability.

The application of fluorocarbon surfactants in fire-fighting foam has been restricted due to their serious environmental hazards. Thus, it is necessary to develop the fluorine-free foam for fire-fighting and understand their characteristics from different perspectives compared with the fluorinated foam. The present study investigated foam stability, oil-film interaction, and fire extinguishing performance for fluorine-free and fluorinated foams. The results show that the adverse effect of oil on the stability of fluorinated foams is much less than that of fluorine-free foams. Besides, the trends in foam stability are not predicted by the entering, spreading, and bridging coefficients based on the measurement of surface and interfacial tensions. The differences in stability of fluorine-free and fluorinated foams are found to be consistent with the observation of oil-film interaction. Oil droplets destabilize the fluorine-free film by spreading over the film, whereas they tend to be rapidly expelled out of the fluorinated film in the form of oil lenses slightly affecting the film stability. Since the film is unstable in contact with oil, the fluorine-free foam cannot suppress the pool fire effectively at the expansion ratio of 6.8–7.2. By adjusting the foam expansion ratio, the fire extinction performance of the fluorine-free foam can be comparable to that of the fluorinated foam, and the burnback performance is significantly enhanced.

Membrane technology greatly boosts the quick collection process of clean-water from oily wastewater. Although a great amount of research has been devoted to fabricating super wetting membranes to efficiently separate waste oil/water mixtures, the environmental friendliness of the membrane and the durable separation performance of the membrane have still obstructed the development of this field. Preparing a kind of membrane with environmental friendliness and excellent antifouling properties is therefore necessary. Herein, a kind of underwater superoleophobic polyethylene glycol (PEG) grafted polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane (PPG membrane) was fabricated through a simple, environmentally friendly and energy-saving surface grafting method by activating PVDF membrane with aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and then grafting PEG on its surface. The PPG membrane could efficiently separate various kinds of oil-in-water emulsions even including high-viscosity crude oil, and a separation efficiency up to 99.6% as well as a permeation flux of 1130 L m−2 h−1 are reached. Moreover, the as-prepared PPG membrane displayed excellent mechanical and chemical stabilities after the mechanical test (100 times of abrasion) and chemical test (soaking in 1 M HCl, and 1 M NaOH and 3.5 wt% NaCl solutions for 12 h). As a result, the various advantages of the PPG membrane laid a solid foundation for oily wastewater applications in real-world environments.

As bio-based food packaging materials promise a more sustainable future, this work fabricated edible oleofilms by casting beeswax-in-water Pickering emulsions, which were formed by the physical hybrid particles of bacterial cellulose nanofibrils (BCNFs) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CCS) (BC/CCS). The emulsion droplet size was varied from 4 to 9 μm, and the emulsion index (EI) was all up to 100%. The obtained emulsions exhibited excellent long-term stability, and there was no change in the EI (100%) after the storage of the emulsion for 3 months. Moreover, the environmental temperature had almost no impact on the droplet size and EI of the emulsion. The mechanical properties of the oleofilms were significantly improved by enhancing the content of BC/CCS. There was also a visual reduction in the water vapor permeability (WVP) value, which was lower than 1.1 × 10–7 g·m–1·h–1·Pa–1. Furthermore, the obtained oleofilms exhibited a notable improvement in surface hydrophobicity, and surprisingly, it could be easily redispersed into water to recover back to the emulsion state without additional high energy mixing. This suggested that this edible oleofilm was prepared by a fully green method by casting Pickering emulsions stabilized by BC/CCS and could extend its application for the development of food-grade coating materials.

In this study, beeswax (BW)/soybean oil (SO) mixed lipid phase and bacterial cellulose nanofibrils (BCNF)/gelatin (GLT) hybrid stabilizers were utilized to prepare O/W emulsions, which were applied as templates to fabricate solid lipid particle (SLP) dispersion for further preparing oleofilms. As the BW content (based on lipid phase) increased from 10 to 40 wt%, the SLP size became smaller, and the obtained oleofilms showed significant variations in the structure that more lipid crystals distributed on the film surface and film exhibited increased crystallinity. The film prepared with SLP with 40 wt% BW (based on lipid phase) had the best light barrier property, largest contact angle (96 ± 1 o ) and lowest water vapor permeability (WVP, 4.4 ± 0.1 × 10 −8 g m −1 ·h −1 ·Pa −1 ), but the lowest tensile strength (1.53 ± 0.11 MPa) and elongation at break (2.32 ± 0.16%). The SLP dispersion was further ultrasonically treated (SLP-U) for improving the physical property of oleofilms. Compared to SLP oleofilms, SLP-U oleofilms possessed more uniform micro-structure, better transparency, and higher mechanical strength, revealing that SLP-U had higher adhesion with biopolymer matrix. The increase of BCNF ratio contributed to the significant decrease in the SLP-U size, improved the oleofilm contact angle, but reduced the film mechanical strength. This study provided the regulation method of acceptable barrier and mechanical properties for oleofilm by properly tailoring the lipid particle property.

Superhydrophilic-superoleophobic membranes are of great value for oil-water separation. Most studies have concentrated on the superhydrophilic-underwater superoleophobic properties of membranes. Air superhydrophilic-superoleophobic membranes feature excellent resistance to oil contamination and do not require pre-wetting with water prior to their application in oil-water separation, thus holding more promising prospects in this field. This study utilized two fluorine-containing materials, fluorosurfactant (Capstone FS-50, DuPont) and perfluorooctanoic acid sodium salt (PFOA-Na), along with TiO 2 nanoparticles, to fabricate air superhydrophilic-superoleophobic SiC (HiOo-SiC) membranes successfully. The resulting HiOo-SiC membrane displayed a lower water contact angle (4.1 °) and a higher oil contact angle (170.8 °) compared to the original SiC membrane, indicating exceptional air superhydrophilic-superoleophobic properties. Additionally, the HiOo-SiC membranes exhibited significantly lower adhesion to oil droplets than SiC membranes modified by either Capstone FS-50 or PFOA-Na alone, which is advantageous for mitigating membrane fouling and thereby improving oil-water separation performance. This attribute may be attributed to the higher surface free energy and roughness of the HiOo-SiC membrane. Furthermore, the HiOo-SiC membrane had smaller pore sizes ranging from 40 to 60 nm due to the incorporation of TiO 2 nanoparticles, which were 9 to 13.5 times smaller than those of the original SiC membrane. The small pore size, high air superhydrophilic-superoleophobic properties, and low oil adhesion of the HiOo-SiC membrane led to a notable enhancement in the oil-water separation efficiency of emulsions, increasing from 94.15% to 99.61% for edible oil-in-water emulsions and from 26.4% to 89.2% for hexadecane-in-water emulsions, demonstrating remarkable capabilities in separating oil-in-water emulsions.

Rapid detection of marine oil spills is becoming increasingly critical in the face of frequent marine oil spills. Oil slick thickness measurement is critical in the hazard assessment of such oil leaks. As surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors are sensitive to slight changes in refractive index, they can monitor offshore oil spills arising from significant differences in the refractive index between oil and water. This study presents a gold-film fiber-optic surface plasmon resonance (FOSPR) sensor prepared by polydopamine accelerated wet chemical plating for rapid and real-time measurement of oil slick thickness. We examined oil thickness detection at two interfaces, namely, water-oil and air-oil. Detection sensitivity of −1.373%/mm is obtained at the water-oil interface in the thickness range of 0–5 mm; detection sensitivity of −2.742%/mm is obtained at the air-oil interface in the thickness range of 0–10 mm. Temperature and salinity present negligible effects on the oil slick thickness measurement. The fabricated FOSPR sensor has the ability to detect the presence of oil as well as quantify the oil thickness. It has favorable repeatability and reusability, demonstrating the significant potential for use in the estimation of marine oil slick thickness.

Underwater superoleophobic membranes are competitive strategy for accomplishing efficient oil-in-water emulsions separation. However, permeating flux of water probably may be dropped with the reduction of pore size. Moreover, the plenty of oil phase may block pore canal resulting the decrease of separation performance. Herein, an underwater superoleophobic membrane with hydrophobic bump and hydrophilic sublayer structure was fabricated through spinning hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) modified SiO 2 (H-SiO 2 ) micro-particles on polydopamine (PDA) hydrophilized polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF, PDP) membrane. Therefore, the sieving of hydrophilic PDP membrane sublayer and oil absorption-flotation of hydrophobic H-SiO 2 bump are ongoing simultaneously in separation processes, thus effective decreasing oil fouling to break the trade-off effect between separation efficiency and permeation flux. Interestingly, the PDPS membrane not only could efficiently separate diverse emulsions involving low and high-viscosity oil/water emulsions, but also possessed excellent mechanical (200 times of bending test) and chemical (separation of oil-in-corrosive waster emulsions) stabilities. More importantly, the separation performance of PDP-H-SiO 2 (PDPS) membrane with bump-sublayer structure is obviously superior to the single PDP membrane. The idea of rationally combing opposite wetting and bump-sublayer structures has certain significance towards the fabrication and development about oil/water separation materials.

The inefficient separation of water-in-oil emulsions through conventional techniques and the troublesome membrane fouling of membrane technology call for alternative efficient and antifouling membrane separation approaches to meet the increasing demands for global environmental protection and energy recovery. Here, we demonstrate an internal electrostatic force-driven superoleophilic membrane-magnetic particles coupling system enabling water-in-oil emulsions super-efficiently separated. Specifically, as-prepared magnetic nanoparticles significantly facilitate the separation of water-in-oil emulsions due to their superoleophilic behaviors and electrostatic repulsion forces between the magnetic nanoparticles-encapsulated Pickering emulsions . Furthermore, the magnetic nanoparticles incorporate into the membrane to increase the roughness and superoleophilic ability, distinctly leading to superefficient separation capacity for water-in-oil emulsions. Meanwhile, their separation performances are so stable that remarkably outperform other membrane systems during 10-cycle operation owing to the enhanced antifouling efficacy, under the support of electrostatic repulsion forces caused by the magnetic nanoparticles-modified composite membrane and magnetic nanoparticles-encapsulated Pickering emulsions. Hence, the combination of the electrostatic repulsion forces and interfacial forces render the as-constructed superoleophilic membrane-magnetic nanoparticles coupling system dramatically exhibit a remarkably high separation flux of 8.76 × 10 4 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 for the water-in-toluene emulsion under the conditions of pH of 10 and sodium dodecyl sulfate surfactant , considerably higher than the existing reports of the state-of-the-art membranes. This study will open up new avenues for superefficient and stable separation of water-in-oil emulsions in actual situations, and this concept will be promising for extending to other oil-in-water emulsions and oily waste water treatment.
