A study on the characteristics and kinetic of co-catalytic pyrolysis with rape straw and ABS waste plastics

Miaoling Luo,Shanshan Shao,Yu Cao,Xiaohua Li,Shiliang Wu

TG analysis, kinetic model and fixed-bed experiments were applied in this study to explore the synergistic effect of rape straw (RS) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS) in the co-catalytic pyrolysis. The results showed that the preferential pyrolysis of RS was favorable for the formation of some active radicals and decreased the pyrolysis temperature of ABS from about 400 °C to 350 °C. As the mixing ratio of ABS rose, the temperature range of co-pyrolysis decreased gradually. The interaction between the free radicals generated by RS and ABS was effectively promoted with the addition of HZSM-5, and also the aromatization was accelerated. The temperature range of co-pyrolysis was decreased from 350 °C to 400 °C–340 °C–380 °C. The Flynn-Wall Ozawa (FWO) and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) were used to build the kinetics model, and revealed that the activation energy of co-pyrolysis system reached the bottom with the mixing ratio was 1:1, indicating the strongest synergistic effect at this point. The synergistic action was revealed from the kinetic analysis. In the fixed-bed test, the yield of liquid phase (54.15 %) and monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) (32.87 %) peaked at the mixing ratio of 1:1, at which the synergistic effect inhibited the conversion to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

Facile fabrication of rape straw biomass fiber/β-CD/Fe3O4 as adsorbent for effective removal of ibuprofen

Guangyu Wu,Qi Liu,Jingyi Wang,Siye Xia,Hualong Wu,Jiaxiang Zong,Jiangang Han,Weinan Xing

Wastewater containing pharmaceuticals can be bioaccumulated, posing a potential risk to drinking water, human health, and ecosystems. In order to make the adsorption process more suitable for actual application, rape straw biomass fiber (treated by an acidified sodium chlorite solution, 5%) and Fe 3 O 4 embedded β-CD to prepare a novel adsorbent (RSBCDF), which was used for the removal of ibuprofen (IBP) from aqueous solution. The RSBCDF was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and zeta potential measurements. The synthesized adsorbent was studied with regard to IBP removal percent under different adsorption conditions such as varying initial pH levels (4–10), initial ibuprofen concentrations (20−160 mg/L), contact time (5−150 min), and the dosage of adsorbent (10−100 mg) via batch adsorption experiments. The adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics, and isotherms were also investigated. The IBP adsorption behaviour followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained for ibuprofen was 48.29 mg/g. The values of Gibbs free energy change were negative (-2.58∼-3.56KJ/mol), suggesting that the process of ibuprofen adsorption onto adsorbent was spontaneous. The positive value of standard enthalpy change (12.09 kJ/mol) indicated that the adsorption process was endothermic. The obtained results prove that RSBCDF is a proficient and economically suitable material for removing IBP from water environments.

Promoted production of hydrocarbons in the catalytic pyrolysis of rape straw over composite HZSM-5@MCM-41 catalysts

Xiaohua Li,Shengnan Ge,Shanshan Shao,Zhichao Lv,Xianliang Xiang,Yixi Cai

In order to promote the production of hydrocarbons in the catalytic pyrolysis of rape straw, a core-shell catalyst fabricated by external recrystallization method was employed. The composite catalyst HZSM-5@MCM-41 was prepared by varying the mass ratio of template and HZSM-5 (THR), and the effect of zeolite acidity and mesoporosity on the production of hydrocarbons was analyzed. A final pyrolysis temperature of 500 °C was suitable to obtain high yield of hydrocarbons over composite catalysts. Compared with ZSM-5 with a favorable pyrolysis temperature of 550 °C, a lower pyrolysis temperature meant a more efficient process, which may be related closely to the good diffusion of large-sized pyrolysis vapors over HZSM-5@MCM-41 catalysts. In addition, the highest yield of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons obtained over HZSM-5@MCM-41 with THR of 1 was 11.43 wt.%, which was boosted by 2.5 times compared with HZSM-5. A proper THR was suitable to fabricate a core-shell catalyst with excellent crystallinity, acidity and mesoporosity, and resulting in a high yield of hydrocarbons. Furthermore, the core-shell catalyst presents less formation of graphite-like coke, which indicated the easier removal of coke. Therefore, the composite HZSM-5@MCM-41 catalysts were more appropriate for upgrading of pyrolysis vapors for hydrocarbons.

Facilitating enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of rape straw by pretreatment with a novel glycerol-based deep eutectic solvent

Wei Tang,Bo Fan,Xinyue Wang,Caoxing Huang,Zhengyu Tang,Yucai He

Deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatment plays an indispensable role in destroying the natural anti-degradation barrier structure of lignocellulose . Here, the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and glycerol were used to synthesize novel DES and introduced to the pretreatment process to facilitate the enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of rape straw (RS). The results showed that the delignification and xylan removal could extremely reach 46.1% and 52.7% under optimal conditions (molar ratio of 1:6, 200 °C, 90 min), respectively. It also resulted in 171.4 mg/g higher accessibility, 7.2% higher crystallinity, and 122.3 m 2 /g lower lignin surface area in RS concerning morphological changes of deconstructed and porous cell wall structure. Ultimately, the reducing sugar yield of RS was increased from 27.4% to 67.9% after pretreatment with this type of DES. This study exploited a novel DES for facilely reducing the recalcitrance of lignocellulose and a promising process for efficient saccharification using renewable biomass.

Hierarchical rapeseed stalk-derived activated carbon porous structure with N and O codoping for symmetric supercapacitor

Shangshu Peng,Shengshang Lu,Xinhai Wang,Linxi Dai,Bo Chen,Yang Wu,Quan Xie,Yunjun Ruan

The high specific surface area, excellent electrical conductivity, and chemical stability of porous carbon have increasingly garnered attention in supercapacitors. Herein, rapeseed stalks were utilized as precursors to synthesize nitrogen (N) and oxygen (O) co-doped porous activated carbon (RSAC) through processes of high-temperature carbonization and KOH activation. The optimally synthesized RSAC-10 exhibits an ultra-high specific surface area of 3085 m 2 g −1 , a specific capacitance of 354.7 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , and remarkable cyclic stability (105% of its specific capacitance after 10,000 cycles). Moreover, a symmetric supercapacitor (SSC) fabricated with RSAC-10 electrodes and a 6 M KOH electrolyte demonstrates a high specific capacitance of 85.21 F g −1 at a current density of 0.25 A g −1 , maintaining 89.8% of its initial capacitance after 10,000 cycles. Additionally, an SSC comprising RSAC-10 electrodes and [BMIM]BF 4 electrolyte delivers an energy density of 52.6 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 375.1 W kg −1 . This work presents an effective method for valorizing crop waste and successfully prepares electrode materials with high specific surface areas alongside substantial energy and power densities.

Removal Performance and Mechanism of Emerging Pollutant Chloroquine Phosphate from Water by Iron and Magnesium Co-Modified Rape Straw Biochar

Hongwei Sun,Jinjin He,Yucan Liu,Xianguo Ji,Gang Wang,Xiaoyong Yang,Yanxiang Zhang

Chloroquine phosphate (CQP) is effective in treating coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19); thus, its usage is rapidly increasing, which may pose a potential hazard to the environment and living organisms. However, there are limited findings on the removal of CQP in water. Herein, iron and magnesium co-modified rape straw biochar (Fe/Mg-RSB) was prepared to remove CQP from the aqueous solution. The results showed that Fe and Mg co-modification enhanced the adsorption efficiency of rape straw biochar (RSB) for CQP with the maximum adsorption capacity of 42.93 mg/g (at 308 K), which was about two times higher than that of RSB. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms analysis, as well as the physicochemical characterization analysis, demonstrated that the adsorption of CQP onto Fe/Mg-RSB was caused by the synergistic effect of pore filling, π-π interaction, hydrogen bonding, surface complexation, and electrostatic interaction. In addition, although solution pH and ionic strength affected the adsorption performance of CQP, Fe/Mg-RSB still had a high adsorption capability for CQP. Column adsorption experiments revealed that the Yoon–Nelson model better described the dynamic adsorption behavior of Fe/Mg-RSB. Furthermore, Fe/Mg-RSB had the potential for repeated use. Therefore, Fe and Mg co-modified biochar could be used for the remediation of CQP from contaminated water.

Eco-friendly triboelectric nanogenerator based on degradable rape straw powder for monitoring human movement

Xiucai Wang,Naijian Hu,Jia Yang,Rongkui Lin,Jianwen Chen,Xinmei Yu,Wenbo Zhu,Minggao Zhang,Ting Wang

Green energy from the surrounding environment has great potential for reducing environmental pollution and sustainable development. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are of great interest as they can easily harvest mechanical energy from the environment. Here, we present a triboelectric nanogenerator (RS-TENG) based on rape straw (RS), which was developed from a film composed of waste RS and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Due to the high content of carbonyl, hydroxyl and amino acid functional groups in RS, the ability of RS/PVA to lose electrons is increased. The proposed RS-TENG device with a size of 6.25 cm2 exhibits open circuit voltage (78 V), short circuit current (5.3 μA) performance under uniform external stress at a frequency of 3.5 Hz and 10 N in the cylinder motor. 104.5 μW was obtained with a load resistance of 25 MΩ. Results obtained from degradability tests revealed that the RS/PVA film was able to degrade over a period of 30 d (In PBS solution). The RS-TENG produces a significantly high current signal under conditions of finger bending, elbow movements, and foot tapping. Practical tests of the RS-TENG have shown that it is a promising sensing device that will be widely used in the future.

Conversion of agricultural waste biomass resource into high-added-value composite and its potential for boosting synergistic removal of ammonia nitrogen in practical water

Junjie Yuan,Yao Zhu,Jizhang Wang,Zhigang Liu,Tao Zhang,Pingping Li,Fengxian Qiu

Agricultural production has long attracted attention for its high demand for resources and high damage to the environment. To address the high costs and impacts of nitrogen fertilizer overuse, a new method for treating ammonia nitrogen pollution in agricultural water bodies needs to be established to ensure water source safety and environmental quality, and to sustain agricultural production. This study involved pretreating oilseed rape straw (ORS) to extract waste biomass to functionalize with active inorganic bimetallic layer, which serves as the primary component for adsorbing ammonia nitrogen from both simulated and real wastewater. The hierarchical structure of the Cu-Al bimetallic hydroxide-functionalized waste ORS biomass (Cu-Al@ORS) is characterized by an abundance of nanosheet clusters on its surface, providing a large number of binding sites. Under the optimal conditions (pH 7.0, temperature 25 °C), the maximum removal efficiency towards ammonia nitrogen can reach 54.5 %. According to the adsorption kinetics fitting result, the adsorption of ammonia nitrogen by Cu-Al@ORS conforms well to the pseudo-second order kinetic model with an adsorption capacity of 87.11 mg/g and chemisorption is the rate-determining step in the adsorption process. Furthermore, the Cu-Al@ORS exhibits comparable adsorption stability and regeneration performance in practical applications. The removal efficiency declines to 49.89 % after the fifth cycle, which is significantly lower than the 67.57 % decrease observed in activated carbon. The practical application results suggest the potential of Cu-Al@ORS as a promising, cost-effective, and sustainable alternative to activated carbon for treating wastewater. The study focuses on the conversion of waste agricultural straw into biomass with ammonia nitrogen removal capabilities, offering a theoretical underpinning for the benign treatment, resource utilization, and carbon sequestration and emission reduction of agricultural waste biomass.
