The attractiveness of a series of mixtures of (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate (Z7-12:Ac), (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (Z9-14:Ac), and (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate (Z11-16:Ac), the Agrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) pheromone, were evaluated in four locations in China. The ternary blend of Z7-12:Ac, Z9-14:Ac, and Z11-16:Ac was the complete pheromone blend for A. ipsilon and the ratio of Z7-12:Ac and Z9-14:Ac was optimal at 3:1. The most attractive ratio of Z11-16:Ac to the other components depended on geographic location. The optimal ratio was 3:1:6 in Yunnan and Shanxi, 3:1:2 in Sichuan and ranged from 3:1:2 to 3:1:12 in Shanghai, which differs significantly from the ratio of 3:1:16 in Japan. The dose of the blend in the pheromone lure influenced attractiveness to male moths and was related to the temperature in the test locations. Attractiveness of sugar–acetic acid-baited and pheromone-baited traps to male and female moths was different before and after the start of flowering of the oilseed rape crop; large numbers of female moths were attracted to sugar–acetic acid traps before flowering but none after flowering had started. This was similar for male moths and there was no synergistic effect when sugar–acetic acid solutions and pheromone were used together. These studies suggest that pheromone trapping based on the blends of three components can be an effective tool to improve the efficiency of monitoring of this pest in China.

Agricultural advancement boosts food production and economic growth but also causes solid waste and phosphorus pollution. Using agricultural waste to tackle pollution is a sustainable way to reduce environmental harm and promote resource recycling. In this study, lanthanum (La)-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) utilizing terephthalic acid (BDC) and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (BTC) as linkers─referred to as La-BDC MOF and La-BTC MOF, respectively─were synthesized on agricultural waste in the form of rapeseed pollen (PL) biomass, resulting in a refined support with enhanced functionality. A variety of advanced instrumental techniques were employed to investigate the formation of PL@La-BDC MOF and PL@La-BTC MOF. The maximum adsorption densities of PO43– achieved under optimal conditions were recorded at 35.8 mg/g for PL@La-BDC MOF (pH 6.0, 25 °C) and 39.4 mg/g for PL@La-BTC MOF (pH 9.0, 35 °C). These values significantly surpass those reported for previously developed La-based adsorbents. The adsorption processes are best described by the pseudo-second-order model, indicating that chemisorption is the predominant mechanism. The presence of PO43– on both the PL@La-BDC MOF and PL@La-BTC MOF following the adsorption process was verified through FT-IR and XPS analyses. In the case of PL@La-BDC MOF, the primary mechanism involves phosphorus anions in solution displacing hydroxyl groups that are coordinated to the central metal, La, through a ligand exchange process coupled with electrostatic attraction. For PL@La-BTC MOF, the main mechanisms involve electrostatic interactions and the chemisorption of carboxyl groups associated with the phosphorus. Moreover, both materials possess enhanced selective adsorption capabilities for phosphorus and exhibit robust anti-interference properties. This work presents an effective and eco-friendly biomass adsorbent for efficient phosphorus adsorption in solutions. It provides insights for utilizing agricultural waste in environmental remediation, enhancing the practical application of natural waste materials.

Herein, we described a mild and facile method for the synthesis of three-dimensional (3D) hierarchically porous TiO2. This method simultaneously realized the C,N self-dopant, introduced more surface defectives, and decreased in the band-gap energy (Eg) of TiO2. Rape pollen was chosen as the biotemplate to prepare TiO2, and the pore property of the obtained products could be adjusted by changing the amount of Ti precursor and calcination temperature. The as-synthesized pollen-TiO2 not only duplicated the morphology of rape pollen, but also showed enhanced 1-butene selectivity in the reaction of selective hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene after loading elemental Pd, when comparing with the commercial TiO2. Butenes selectivity of 98% and 1-butene selectivity of 66% were achieved at 50 °C, because of the hierarchically porous structure of pollen-TiO2 and the lower Eg and more surface defects resulting from the C,N dopant.

Background Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) significantly compromises patients' quality of life, has detrimental effects on both physical and mental well-being, and poses a substantial economic burden. Current pharmacological interventions primarily focus on symptom relief; nevertheless, their associated adverse effects are evident. Rape bee pollen and maca are both homologous food products, which are not only rich in nutrition, but also have many biological activities. There is no report on the combination of rape bee pollen and maca in benign prostatic hyperplasia therapy, and no report on the molecular mechanism. This study aims to systematically investigate the therapeutic efficacy and underlying molecular mechanisms of a chewable tablet formulation containing rape bee pollen and maca in the management of BPH. Methods First, the chewable tablets were prepared from rape bee pollen and maca, and the High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) fingerprint was established. During a 4-week period, rats were subjected to subcutaneous injections of testosterone propionate solution to establish a BPH model, while simultaneously receiving orally administered chewable tablets for BPH treatment via gavage. We assessed the body weight, prostate tissue index, serum levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), testosterone (T), estradiol (E2), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1beta (IL-1β), superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) levels in rats. Prostate tissues were collected for histopathological analysis. The protein expression levels of IL-6, phosphorylated Janus kinase 2 ( p -JAK2), and phosphorylated signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 ( p -STAT3) were determined by Western blotting. Rat feces were collected aseptically for 16S rDNA gene sequencing to assess gut microbiota levels. Additionally, our research findings demonstrate that the combined application of rape pollen and maca exhibits superior therapeutic efficacy compared to the individual use of either rape pollen or maca alone. Results We prepared the rape bee pollen and maca chewable tablets, established the HPLC fingerprint map, and quantitatively analyzed four of these main components. We found that the rape bee pollen and maca chewable tablets significantly inhibited DHT, T, E2, E2/T ratio, IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β and reduced MDA levels and increased SOD, GSH levels. 16S rDNA gene sequencing revealed that the chewable tablet increased the abundance of the beneficial bacteria Faecalibacterium, Collinsella, Phascolarctobacterium, Kineothrix , and Lactobacillus , and decreased that of the pro-inflammatory bacterium Prevotella . Western blot indicated that the chewable tablet could significantly inhibit the IL-6, p -JAK2, and p -STAT3 protein expression levels. Conclusion We found that rape bee pollen and maca chewable tablets had a protective effect on rats with BPH, and also found that the combination of rape bee pollen and maca was better than separate application. The mechanism may be related to the gut microbiota and IL-6/JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway.

The crude flavonoid extract of pollen (CFP) of four species of honeybee pollens were extracted with ethanol, and the total flavonoid contents ranged from 3.4 to 14.5 mg rutin/g dry weight. The antioxidant activities of the CFPs were evaluated from both chemical and cytological aspects. Comprehensive antioxidant scores were determined based on these two evaluation systems. The results showed that canola CFP had the highest antioxidant capacity among the four CFPs. A cytotoxicity assay was conducted to assess the safety threshold of the CFPs, and canola CFP was proved to be the least toxic to vascular endothelial cell. Of the four tested CFPs, this research suggests that canola CFP is the most promising natural antioxidant. In addition, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis detected seven flavonoid glycosides in the hydrolysates of the four CFPs. Among them, quercetin and kaempferol were present in all four honeybee pollen extracts, but there were significant differences between their contents. A correlation analysis revealed a strong correlation between the content of quercetin in the pollen extract and the extract's antioxidant activity. Practical Application Many varieties of honeybee pollen are commercially available. The results of this study help guide consumers to choose honeybee pollens that have a better antioxidant effect. This report can also provide guidance and data in support of the development of honeybee pollen health products.

This study was aimed at evaluating the hypouricemic effect of rape bee pollen from Qinghai province in China. Rape bee pollen crude extracts (RPCE) was obtained by n-butanol extraction and purified by polyamide resin and AB-8 resin respectively to generate five fractions (fraction 1–5). In vitro , fraction 5 had strongest inhibition on xanthine oxidase (XO) (IC 50 = 0.21 ± 0.02 mg mL −1 ) among five fractions and had reversible and mixed inhibitory effect on XO. Fraction 5 was further purified and then generated fraction 5′. In vivo , fraction 5′ had lower serum UA level and could reduce serum BUN, Cr levels and hepatic XO activity more effectively than RPCE in potassium oxonate-induced hyperuricemic mice . Moreover, fraction 5′ had higher CAT activity and content of GSH in hyperuricemic mice. Six compounds including quercetin-3-O-(2″-O-glucopyranosyl)-glucopyranoside (peak 1), quercetin-3-O-(2″-O-glucopyranosyl)-rhamnopyranoside (peak 2), kaempferol-3-O-(2″-O-glucopyranosyl)-glucopyranoside (peak 3) and N′, N″-di- p -coumaroylspermidine (peak 4–6) in RPCE were identified by using HPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS, whereas only peak 4 to 6 were found in fraction 5′. This study shows that rape bee pollen has potential clinical application value as an effective anti-hyperuricemia bioactive drug or functional food.
