Traditional polymer-based membranes used for oil–water separation are limited in practical application because of their poor chemical stability, easy scaling, and low efficiency. In this study, a durable superhydrophobic electrospun carbon fiber (CF/Ni/F) membrane was successfully prepared by combining electroless plating of Ni nanoclusters and fluorination treatment, and used for highly-efficient oil–water separation in harsh environment. The increased roughness and reduced surface energy endowed the superhydrophobicity of membrane. The water contact angle (WCA) and oil flux of CF/Ni/F membrane reached 164.2° and 3669 L/(m 2 ·h). For non-emulsified and/or emulsified oil–water mixtures, the separation efficiency of CF/Ni/F membrane remained above 99% under gravity drive after only several cycles. In addition, the as-prepared CF/Ni/F demonstrated good chemical stability in the harsh environment.

Separate water from water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions is essential in oil resources recycling and wastewater treatment. Hydrophobic ceramic membranes (HCM) have shown great potential in the dehydration of W/O emulsions but developing high-performance HCM is still a challenge due to the difficulty in hydrophobic modification of ceramic membranes. In this study, an HCM with high grafting density and robust structure was prepared by the grafting silane coupling agent onto an attapulgite (ATP) ceramic membrane. The hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) was chosen for membrane surface modification considering its reaction activity and stability based on molecular dynamic simulation. The effect of the HDTMS contents in the grafting solution and reaction time on the membrane properties were examined. The ATP membrane grafted by HDTMS solution with a content of 9600 ppm for 24 h had a water contact angle of 161° and oil permeability larger than 2207.5 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 (LMHB). When dealing with W/O emulsions with a water content of 10000 ppm, the steady permeability, permeability recovery ratio, and water rejection of ATP-based HCM was 362 LMHB, 97 %, and 99 %, respectively. Ascribe to the –OH-rich nature of ATP, the performance of HCM in this work is superior to most membranes including Al 2 O 3 , ZrO 2 , and SiC. Hydrophobic-modified ATP provides a new idea for the development of high-performance HCM based on natural mineral ceramics.

Traditional superhydrophobic materials for oil/water separation not only depend on nonrenewable feedstocks but also lead to secondary environmental pollutions after discarding, due to the presence of inorganic nanoparticles and toxic fluorine-containing chemicals. Herein, we report a fully sustainable, nanoparticle-free, and fluorine-free superhydrophobic cotton fabric (CF) fabricated via an eco-friendly method, that is, roughness creation by enzyme etching followed by surface coating with an epoxidized soybean oil thermoset and subsequent low surface energy modification with stearic acid. The superhydrophobic CF exhibited excellent durability with surface superhydrophobicity surviving from mechanical abrasion, tape peeling, ultrasonication, chemical resistance, and low/high temperature treatment, due to the enzyme etching-induced stable surface structure with covalently linked low-energy substance. The superhydrophobic CF showed excellent oil/water separation performance with a high separation efficiency and high oil flux. With outstanding mechanical robustness, chemical and environmental resistances, and excellent oil/water separation performance, the fully sustainable superhydrophobic CF can be applied as an environmentally friendly substitute to nonrenewable and harmful chemicals containing oil/water separation materials.

Currently, Janus membranes have attracted growing attention in oil-water separation due to the unique asymmetric wettability on opposite two surfaces. Nevertheless, it is still challengeable to achieve the superhydrophilicity and superhydrophobicity of the two opposite sides. Inspired by the lotus leaf and orange structure, the Janus membrane of polyacrylonitrile/poly (vinylidene fluoride)@poly (vinylidene fluoride)-methyltriethoxysilane (PAN/PVDF@PVDF-MTES) is developed by electrospinning and electrospraying technique for oil-water separation. In Janus membrane structure, each layer is physically combined, and the Janus-PAN side is superhydrophilic with water contact angle (WCA) of ∼0°, while the Janus-PVDF-MTES side is superhydrophobic with WCA of ∼170.2 ± 2.4°. These characteristics endow the membrane with outstanding separation efficiencies and good reusability. The separation mechanism is elucidated on the basis of the asymmetric wettability. The kinetics behavior of the oils in Janus membrane follows the models of pseudo-first-order and intra-particle diffusion. The oil flux of the Janus membrane is associated with the types of oil and the diffusion is not the only influence factor in oil adsorption. The application trial results indicate the potential of PAN/PVDF@PVDF-MTES membrane in the separation of the oil/water mixtures and surfactant-stabilized emulsions.

Superhydrophobic materials with micro-hierarchical structure are widely in oil-water separation. However, the environmental suitability and stability of material are still a challenge. To overcome this problem, a novel superhydrophobic Cu-MOF based copper mesh was prepared by first using chemical oxidation to obtain Cu(OH) 2 nanoarrays on copper substrate, then metal-organic framework (Cu-MOF) crystals were in situ grown using Cu(OH) 2 as a sacrificial template, and follow treated with methylpolysiloxane (PDMS). The wetting behavior, surface morphology and physical structure of the modified copper mesh were characterized by the SEM, XRD , FTIR, XPS and WCAs test. The results show that the assembled nanoarrays and deposited crystal particle exhibit a more stable three-dimensional rough structure, which adapted to the harsh oil-water separation environment. The obtained superhydrophobic modified copper mesh (WCA = 156.2°) has a high separation efficiency (96%–99%) and oil flux (2.1–7.3 L m −1 s −1 ) for different types of oil-water mixtures, and good repeatability. Based on in situ growth strategy and gentle preparation process, the as-prepared functional copper mesh with a low-cost and high-performance has great potential in oil-spill repairment and efficient separation of organic liquids.
