Microscopic Mechanical Model Analysis and Visualization Investigation of SiO2 Nanoparticle/HPAM Polymer Foam Liquid Film Displacing Heavy Oil

Zihan Gu,Zhaomin Li,Zhengxiao Xu,Chao Zhang

In this paper, the microscopic mechanisms and macroscopic characteristics of polymer/nanoparticle foam flooding in a heavy oil reservoir environment were studied. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant was used as the foaming agent, and the foam was prepared by a combination of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) polymer and SiO2 nanoparticles. By performing experiments with the microscopic model, the foam flooding dynamics in the heavy oil reservoir were simulated. Based on the experiments, the formula model was established to evaluate the physicochemical effects between the foam liquid film and oil surface. Finally, the macroscopic characteristics of foam flooding were studied by performing oil displacement experiments with a 2D visual model. The microscopic experiments demonstrated that the foam liquid film could exert multiple actions, such as adsorption, stretching, and cutting on the heavy oil in the reservoir pores. These actions were accompanied by force changes between the foam and heavy oil, and the addition of polymer and nanoparticles further strengthened them. The calculations of the formula model indicated that the polymer and nanoparticles amplified the force between the foam liquid film and heavy oil by 1.95 and 2.2 times, respectively. The 2D visual model experiments suggested that foam flooding could further develop heavy oil after water flooding through its liquid film effects, and the oil recovery efficiency increased from 42.43 to 57.82%. In addition, the polymer and nanoparticles further optimized the oil displacement effect of the foam liquid film, which made the oil recovery efficiency reach 64.77–68.16%.

Water-Dispersible Reactive Nanosilica and Poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid sodium) Nanohybrid as Potential Oil Displacement Agent for Enhanced Oil Recovery

Yamin Cheng,Mengyun Zhao,Chao Zheng,Sai Guo,Xiaohong Li,Zhijun Zhang

2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid sodium (AMPS) was grafted onto the surface of reactive nanosilica (RNS-D) by free radical polymerization to afford RNR-D/PAMPS inorganic–polymer nanohybrid with good water dispersibility, which can serve as a potential oil displacement agent for enhanced oil recovery. The RNS-D/PAMPS nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, and the oil displacement performance of the RNS-D/PAMPS nanohybrid solution was evaluated by static and dynamic oil displacement tests. Results showed that the RNS-D/PAMPS nanohybrid as the potential oil displacement agent could obviously reduce the interfacial tension between crude oil and water, increase the hydrophilicity of rock surface, and dramatically decrease the adhesion work of crude oil and rock. When the RNS-D/PAMPS solution is introduced at a mass fraction of 5.0% under static and dynamic oil displacement tests, the tested crude oil can be recovered at a total rate of up to 87.67% and 92.86%, respectively, showing promising potential in enhanced oil recovery.

Continuous sulfonation of hexadecylbenzene in a microreactor

Yiming Xu,Suli Liu,Weijun Meng,Hua Yuan,Weibao Ma,Xiangqian Sun,Jianhong Xu,Bin Tan,Ping Li

Heavy alkyl benzene sulfonates are inexpensive surfactants that are extensively used as oil-displacing agents during tertiary oil recovery. Among these, C 16–18 heavy alkyl benzene sulfonates possess an excellent ability to reduce the oil-water interface tension. In this study, hexadecylbenzene sulfonic acid (HBSA) was synthesised in a continuous stirred-tank microreactor using a continuous method with 1,2-dichloroethane (EDC) dilution. Post-sulfonation liquid SO 3 solution was used as a sulfonating agent for hexadecylbenzene (HDB). The effects of reaction conditions, such as the SO 3 :HDB molar ratio, sulfonation temperature and sulfonation agent concentration, on the yield and purity of the product were investigated. Optimisation of the reaction process yielded high-quality HBSA samples with a purity exceeding 99 wt%. The continuous sulfonation process significantly enhanced the production and efficiency in the case of a considerably short residence time (10 s) in the reactor, without the need for aging. The results of this study demonstrate significant potential for application in industrial production.

New Technique for Enhancing Residual Oil Recovery from Low-Permeability Reservoirs: The Cooperation of Petroleum Hydrocarbon-Degrading Bacteria and SiO2 Nanoparticles

Kai Cui,Hailan Li,Ping Chen,Yong Li,Wenxue Jiang,Kun Guo

Residual crude oil production from low-permeability reservoirs has become a huge challenge because conventional recovery techniques are inefficient. Nanofluids as a new type of oil-displacement agent have become a hot topic in recent years to enhance oil recovery (EOR) in reservoirs. However, the imperfection of agglomeration, dissolution, and instability of nanofluids in reservoir environments limit their ability to drive oil. Here, a novel “microbial-nanofluid” composed of petroleum hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria (PHDB, namelyBacillus cereus) and SiO2nanoparticles was proposed as a potential new technology for enhancing residual oil recovery. The micromodel displacement test results showed that the optimum composite concentration of “microbial-nanofluids” were PHDB (7.0%,v/v) and SiO2nanoparticles (100 mg/L), and the residual oil recovery was increased by 30.1% compared with waterflooding (68.8%). Moreover, the morphological characteristics of residual oil mobilization after “microbial-nanofluid” flooding were mainly small and dispersed oil droplets in the excessive areas, and the dead-end areas were almost clean with mobilization. Furthermore, the cooperation mechanism of four kinds of “microbial-nanofluids” to enhance the residual oil recovery in low-permeability reservoirs was preliminarily clarified, namely the co-emulsification of oil, working together to unclog oil clog, microbial-nanofluid self-assembly, and structural disjoining pressure. This study demonstrated that PHDB-SiO2nanoparticle composite flooding technology provided a significant potential for the EOR from low-permeability reservoirs. Keywords:petroleum hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria;silica nanoparticles;residual oil mobilization;visual micromodels;microbial-nanofluids;enhance oil recovery

Multiscale study of Janus nanosheets’ interfacial activity

Yingpeng Chen,Jie Cao,Ying Li,Hongbo Zeng

As the challenge of enhancing oil recovery from reservoirs continues to grow, it becomes increasingly crucial to seek out new materials for oil displacement. Janus graphene oxide (JGO) with excellent interfacial activity stands out as a promising candidate, which enables it to locate crude oil and effectively displace it towards production wells. One key advantage of JGO is its ability to reduce interfacial tension and create interfacial films, attributed to JGO nanosheets adsorbing at oil–water interfaces. Another noteworthy property of JGO is its capacity to transform oil-wet rock surfaces into water-wet surfaces, which is because JGO nanosheets can interact hydrophobically with crude oil molecules on rock surfaces. In addition, JGO helps mitigate capillary resistance by altering the concave oil–water front to a flat state. Microscopic displacement shows that JGO nanosheets enlarge the sweep efficiency and oil-washing efficiency of water. Nuclear magnetic resonance experiment indicates that JGO nanofluid can increase oil recovery by 17.1 %. This research presents a comprehensive exploration of the interfacial activity of Janus nanofluid, spanning from the molecular scale to the micro and core scales.
