Polyacrylamide nanospheres are widely used as recovery-enhancing polymers in low-permeability oil fields. However, with the further exploitation of oil fields in recent years, the performance of the regulating drive system has been put forward to higher requirements, so this study of the structure and oil displacement performance of the oil-based supramolecular system based on polyacrylamide, and further discusses its oil displacement mechanism. The results show that the viscosity value of the oil-based supramolecular system increases significantly, which can effectively improve the mobility ratio and improve swept volume. The ability of the system to remove crude oil from the slides is significantly increased, and the mathematical relationships are discussed. The oil displacement efficiency of the oil-based supramolecular system in different dispersion media was explored in combination with microchannels of a nonhomogeneous multistage bifurcation structure. This work supports the practical application of oil-based supramolecular nanospheres in oil fields.

Petroleum remains the main source of energy consumption over the past decade. The development of rich unconventional oil reservoirs is a huge challenge. Clean fracturing fluids (CFFs) have gained considerable attention for the unconventional reservoir development, owing to their integrated capabilities of fracturing and oil expulsion. Performance of CFFs is a vital factor in enhancing oil recovery. In this work, a ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES) with dual hydrogen donors (HBDs) was developed as a novel and green medium for improving CFF performance. With the hydrogen-bonding interactions, the ternary DES enable a robust micelle network, thereby strengthening the rheological property, temperature resistance and drag reduction performance of CFFs. The salt resistance performance was improved due to the ion–dipole interaction between HBDs and salt cations, decreasing the interactions between salt cations and surfactants. The DES also increase the imbibition efficiency from 30.7 % in 98 h to 43.7 % in 62 h. Besides, the gel breaking performance and reusability of gel-breaking fluid were enhanced in the presence of DES. The ternary DES showed more effective reinforcement for CFF properties as compared with binary DES, due to the synergistic effect of dual HBDs. This work will provide a promising alternative for intensifying CFF performance.

In this paper, the microscopic mechanisms and macroscopic characteristics of polymer/nanoparticle foam flooding in a heavy oil reservoir environment were studied. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant was used as the foaming agent, and the foam was prepared by a combination of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) polymer and SiO2 nanoparticles. By performing experiments with the microscopic model, the foam flooding dynamics in the heavy oil reservoir were simulated. Based on the experiments, the formula model was established to evaluate the physicochemical effects between the foam liquid film and oil surface. Finally, the macroscopic characteristics of foam flooding were studied by performing oil displacement experiments with a 2D visual model. The microscopic experiments demonstrated that the foam liquid film could exert multiple actions, such as adsorption, stretching, and cutting on the heavy oil in the reservoir pores. These actions were accompanied by force changes between the foam and heavy oil, and the addition of polymer and nanoparticles further strengthened them. The calculations of the formula model indicated that the polymer and nanoparticles amplified the force between the foam liquid film and heavy oil by 1.95 and 2.2 times, respectively. The 2D visual model experiments suggested that foam flooding could further develop heavy oil after water flooding through its liquid film effects, and the oil recovery efficiency increased from 42.43 to 57.82%. In addition, the polymer and nanoparticles further optimized the oil displacement effect of the foam liquid film, which made the oil recovery efficiency reach 64.77–68.16%.

Polyacrylamide nanospheres are widely applied enhancing oil recovery polymers in low-permeability oilfields. However, it is difficult to detect polyacrylamide nanospheres concentration in the produced fluid. In this study, fluorescent polyacrylamide nanospheres were synthesized via a reverse phase microemulsion method by the copolymerization of acrylamide and pyranine derivative. The structure, fluorescence properties, and oil displacement mechanisms of fluorescent polyacrylamide nanospheres were researched. The results indicated that the fluorescence intensity of the nanospheres had a distinct linear relationship with the concentration at a certain concentration range. The relative error of standard curve method was less than 1%. Alkaline conditions and aging process could diminish fluorescence intensity while temperature and ionic species had slightly effect on it. The oil displacement phenomenon of the nanospheres in T-shaped microchannel, oil–water interface, and glass plate were observed clearly. This work provides support for the practical applications of fluorescent polyacrylamide nanospheres in oilfields.

In this work, the effect of oil-displacing agent composition on oil/water interface stability of the asphaltene-rich alkali–surfactant–polymer (ASP) flooding-produced water was systematically investigated, especially from the perspective of the interaction between oil displacement agents and asphaltene at the oil/water interface. Primarily, adsorption behavior of the artificial and natural interfacial substances (oil displacement surfactant and asphaltenes) on the oil/water interface was investigated by molecular dynamics simulation. The oil displacement surfactant and asphaltenes formed a cross-linked and compact interfacial film structure, which significantly enhanced the interface stability; the more the oil displacement surfactants adsorbed on the interface, the more stable is the cross-linked structure formed between them and asphaltenes. Then, the interfacial property variations that are originating from the interactions differences between oil displacement agents and asphaltenes were monitored via interfacial tension, zeta potential, and interfacial film rheology tests. Moreover, the effect of oil displacement agent concentrations on the interfacial film thinning and rupture kinetic behavior was further investigated. Finally, cream experiments were conducted to verify the effect of oil displacement agent composition on the oil/water separation efficiencies of asphaltene-rich ASP flooding-produced water. When 5% asphaltenes was added, the creaming oil removal rate reduced from 90.0 to 85.3% at 19 h. The interactions between asphaltenes and oil displacement agents immensely enhance the oil/water interfacial film strength and impede the oil/water separation process.

2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid sodium (AMPS) was grafted onto the surface of reactive nanosilica (RNS-D) by free radical polymerization to afford RNR-D/PAMPS inorganic–polymer nanohybrid with good water dispersibility, which can serve as a potential oil displacement agent for enhanced oil recovery. The RNS-D/PAMPS nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, and the oil displacement performance of the RNS-D/PAMPS nanohybrid solution was evaluated by static and dynamic oil displacement tests. Results showed that the RNS-D/PAMPS nanohybrid as the potential oil displacement agent could obviously reduce the interfacial tension between crude oil and water, increase the hydrophilicity of rock surface, and dramatically decrease the adhesion work of crude oil and rock. When the RNS-D/PAMPS solution is introduced at a mass fraction of 5.0% under static and dynamic oil displacement tests, the tested crude oil can be recovered at a total rate of up to 87.67% and 92.86%, respectively, showing promising potential in enhanced oil recovery.

As an emerging technology for enhanced oil recovery that is highly efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly, nanofluids have gained increasing attention. However, improving the dispersion stability of nanofluids to enhance oil displacement efficiency remains an open challenge. In this study, a variety of modified MoS 2 nanosheets were synthesized and their stability in brine and basic properties relevant to oil displacement were systematically investigated. The results demonstrated that both modification methods were effective to some extent. However, compared with physically adsorbed, chemically modified MoS 2 nanosheets by sulfur vacancies exhibited superior performance. It was reflected in their good stability in brine, low interfacial tension, and effective emulsifying ability. These advantageous properties enabled them to enhance oil recovery in a significant manner. This work revealed the basic properties of modified MoS 2 nanosheets , especially the dispersibility in brine. It was expected to design suitable chemical oil displacement agents for different reservoir conditions and provide guidance for practical application.

Heavy alkyl benzene sulfonates are inexpensive surfactants that are extensively used as oil-displacing agents during tertiary oil recovery. Among these, C 16–18 heavy alkyl benzene sulfonates possess an excellent ability to reduce the oil-water interface tension. In this study, hexadecylbenzene sulfonic acid (HBSA) was synthesised in a continuous stirred-tank microreactor using a continuous method with 1,2-dichloroethane (EDC) dilution. Post-sulfonation liquid SO 3 solution was used as a sulfonating agent for hexadecylbenzene (HDB). The effects of reaction conditions, such as the SO 3 :HDB molar ratio, sulfonation temperature and sulfonation agent concentration, on the yield and purity of the product were investigated. Optimisation of the reaction process yielded high-quality HBSA samples with a purity exceeding 99 wt%. The continuous sulfonation process significantly enhanced the production and efficiency in the case of a considerably short residence time (10 s) in the reactor, without the need for aging. The results of this study demonstrate significant potential for application in industrial production.

Residual crude oil production from low-permeability reservoirs has become a huge challenge because conventional recovery techniques are inefficient. Nanofluids as a new type of oil-displacement agent have become a hot topic in recent years to enhance oil recovery (EOR) in reservoirs. However, the imperfection of agglomeration, dissolution, and instability of nanofluids in reservoir environments limit their ability to drive oil. Here, a novel “microbial-nanofluid” composed of petroleum hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria (PHDB, namelyBacillus cereus) and SiO2nanoparticles was proposed as a potential new technology for enhancing residual oil recovery. The micromodel displacement test results showed that the optimum composite concentration of “microbial-nanofluids” were PHDB (7.0%,v/v) and SiO2nanoparticles (100 mg/L), and the residual oil recovery was increased by 30.1% compared with waterflooding (68.8%). Moreover, the morphological characteristics of residual oil mobilization after “microbial-nanofluid” flooding were mainly small and dispersed oil droplets in the excessive areas, and the dead-end areas were almost clean with mobilization. Furthermore, the cooperation mechanism of four kinds of “microbial-nanofluids” to enhance the residual oil recovery in low-permeability reservoirs was preliminarily clarified, namely the co-emulsification of oil, working together to unclog oil clog, microbial-nanofluid self-assembly, and structural disjoining pressure. This study demonstrated that PHDB-SiO2nanoparticle composite flooding technology provided a significant potential for the EOR from low-permeability reservoirs. Keywords:petroleum hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria;silica nanoparticles;residual oil mobilization;visual micromodels;microbial-nanofluids;enhance oil recovery

With the development of nanotechnology, nanomaterials have shown good potential for enhanced oil recovery , which is of great significance for oil and gas production. Compared with nanoparticles and nanoemulsions , nanosheets have higher interfacial activity due to their two-dimensional structure, which can form a climbing film on the interface of oil-water and efficiently improve oil recovery. However, the influencing factors of the film-climbing effect and the relationship between the film-climbing effect and enhanced oil recovery are still not clear. In this paper, small-sized water-soluble nanosheets which were molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanosheets (30–50 nm) were synthesized using a one-step hydrothermal method , which have strong stability during the flooding test. And then, modifiers with different carbon chain lengths were used to modify the hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) of nanosheets. Next, the influencing factors of nanosheets' climbing film were discussed, and the two-phase height index was innovatively used to characterize the strength of the nanosheets climbing film in the oil-water system. The results show that the longer the carbon chain length of the modifier, the closer the nanosheets are to neutral wet with stronger interfacial activity. In addition, molybdenum disulfide nanosheets can produce a climbing film at the oil-water interface, which is related to salinity , concentration, and diameter of test jar. In a word, the oil displacement efficiency can be characterized by the two-phase height index, and the higher the index, the higher the oil displacement efficiency. This makes us fully realize the importance of climbing film in tertiary oil recovery, and provides a new method for the effective development of oil and gas resources.

As the challenge of enhancing oil recovery from reservoirs continues to grow, it becomes increasingly crucial to seek out new materials for oil displacement. Janus graphene oxide (JGO) with excellent interfacial activity stands out as a promising candidate, which enables it to locate crude oil and effectively displace it towards production wells. One key advantage of JGO is its ability to reduce interfacial tension and create interfacial films, attributed to JGO nanosheets adsorbing at oil–water interfaces. Another noteworthy property of JGO is its capacity to transform oil-wet rock surfaces into water-wet surfaces, which is because JGO nanosheets can interact hydrophobically with crude oil molecules on rock surfaces. In addition, JGO helps mitigate capillary resistance by altering the concave oil–water front to a flat state. Microscopic displacement shows that JGO nanosheets enlarge the sweep efficiency and oil-washing efficiency of water. Nuclear magnetic resonance experiment indicates that JGO nanofluid can increase oil recovery by 17.1 %. This research presents a comprehensive exploration of the interfacial activity of Janus nanofluid, spanning from the molecular scale to the micro and core scales.

A novel nanofluid of modified carbon black (MCB) nanoparticles was initially developed for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in low permeability reservoirs. The MCB nanoparticles were obtained via a three-step reaction involving modification by oxidation, acyl chlorination, and activated grafting. MCB nanoparticles were spherically dispersed, with an average size of 72.3 nm. Compared with carbon black (CB) nanoparticles, dispersed MCB nanoparticles can effectively reduce the oil–water interfacial tension (IFT) to 10 −2 mN/m and change the surface wettability of sand particles. Based on the results of core flooding experiments, the MCB nanoparticles exhibited a better EOR capacity than surfactants and CB nanoparticles, and the final oil recovery was significantly increased by 27.27%. The core scanning test showed that the MCB nanoparticles could plug high permeability channels by adsorbing onto the surfaces of sand particles and forming larger aggregates that bridge across pores or throats, resulting in a higher swept volume. The synergistic effects of improved swept volume and oil displacement efficiency were the EOR mechanisms of the MCB nanoparticles. The studies indicate that these MCB nanoparticles have excellent potential for EOR in low permeability reservoirs.
