Effect of yeast addition on the biogas production performance of a food waste anaerobic digestion system

Ming Gao,Shuang Zhang,Xinxin Ma,Weijie Guan,Na Song,Qunhui Wang,Chuanfu Wu

Food waste contains numerous easily degradable components, and anaerobic digestion is prone to acidification and instability. This work aimed to investigate the effect of adding yeast on biogas production performance, when substrate is added after biogas production is reduced. The results showed that the daily biogas production increased 520 and 550 ml by adding 2.0% (volatile solids; VS) of activated yeast on the 12th and 37th day of anaerobic digestion, respectively, and the gas production was relatively stable. In the control group without yeast, the increase of gas production was significantly reduced. After the second addition of substrate and yeast, biogas production only increased 60 ml compared with that before the addition. After fermentation, the biogas production of yeast group also increased by 33.2% compared with the control group. Results of the analysis of indicators, such as volatile organic acids, alkalinity and propionic acid, showed that the stability of the anaerobic digestion system of the yeast group was higher. Thus, the yeast group is highly likely to recover normal gas production when the biogas production is reduced, and substrate is added. The results provide a reference for experiments on the industrialization of continuous anaerobic digestion to take tolerable measures when the organic load of the feed fluctuates dramatically.

The impact and fate of clarithromycin in anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge for biogas production

Shuting Zeng,Jing Sun,Ziwei Chen,Qiuxiang Xu,Wei Wei,Dongbo Wang,Bing-Jie Ni

Clarithromycin retained in waste activated sludge (WAS) inevitably enters the anaerobic digestion system. So far, the complex impacts and fate of clarithromycin in continuous operated WAS anaerobic digestion system are still unclear. In this study, two semi-continuous long-term reactors were set up to investigate the effect of clarithromycin on biogas production and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during WAS anaerobic digestion, and a batch test was carried out to explore the potential metabolic mechanism. Experimental results showed that clarithromycin at lower concentrations (i.e., 0.1 and 1.0 mg/L) did not affect biogas production, whereas the decrease in biogas production was observed when the concentration of clarithromycin was further increased to 10 mg/L. Correspondingly, the relative abundance of functional bacteria in WAS anaerobic digestion (i.e., Anaerolineaceae and Microtrichales ) was reduced with long-term clarithromycin exposure. The investigation of ARGs suggested that the effect of methylation belonging to the target site modification played a critical role for the anaerobic microorganisms in the expression of antibiotic resistance, and ermF , played dominated ARGs, presented the most remarkable proliferation. In comparison, the role of efflux pump was weakened with a significant decrease of two detected efflux genes. During WAS anaerobic digestion, clarithromycin could be partially degraded into metabolites with lower antimicrobial activity including oleandomycin and 5-O-desosaminyl-6-O-methylerythronolide and other metabolites without antimicrobial activity.

Enhancing hydrogenotrophic activities by zero-valent iron addition as an effective method to improve sulfadiazine removal during anaerobic digestion of swine manure

Weiwei Huang,Fei Yang,Wenli Huang,Zhongfang Lei,Zhenya Zhang

In this study, the feasibility of Fe 0 addition for driving sulfadiazine (SDZ) removal during anaerobic digestion of swine manure (SM) was tested. Compared with the Fe 0 -free digesters spiked with 200 mg/L SDZ (R SDZ ), treatments with 5.0 g/L Fe 0 (R SDZ/Fe 0 ) significantly accelerated and optimized the acidification process by enriching Clostridia and Bacteroidia (key members responsible for VFAs/H 2 production), providing more readily available substrates for methanogenesis. Furthermore, Fe 0 increased the overall abundance of hydrogenotrophic methanogens, specifically toxicant resistant Methanoculleus and Methanosphaera spp. were selectively enriched, helping achieve a 36.9% higher CH 4 yield and a 26.4% greater total solids removal efficiency. A positive correlation between the solid content and the SDZ concentration adsorbed in SM was observed. The addition of Fe 0 increased the distribution of SDZ in liquid and facilitated its removal through the enhanced biodegradation and physicochemical processes. Overall, the total SDZ removal efficiency was improved by 86.8% with Fe 0 .

Influence of sampling methods and storage condition on volatile methyl siloxanes quantification in biogas

Jia Wang,Liwei Liao,Li'ao Wang,Lei Wang

There has been no standard method for sampling and analysis of siloxane in biogas . The appropriate sampling method must ensure that the composition of samples collected in siloxanes does not change during sampling and analysis. To this end, three sampling methods (two-tandem (section A and B)) impingers with acetone as absorbent (TTIA), coconut activated carbon adsorbent tubes (CACT), and silica gel adsorbent tubes (SGT)) were evaluated in this paper. Hexamethyldisiloxane (L2), hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (D3), octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), and decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) detected in section B were less than 7% of those in section A of the three methods. The gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used for quantitative analysis of the siloxane in the samples. The results demonstrated that target compounds were completely adsorbed by the three methods. For D3, D4, and D5, recovery rates of CACT were 103%, 126%, and 120%, recovery rates of SGT were 114%, 112%, and 114%, and recovery rates of TTIA were 45%, 86%, and 92%, respectively. According to the one-way analysis of variance test, there was no significant difference between recovery rates of CACT and SGT, whereas they were higher than those of TTIA. The siloxane contents in dry synthesis gas collected by three methods were generally higher than those in wet synthesis gas. The contents of D3, D4, and D5 did not change significantly with storage temperatures except L2. However, the content of D3 stored at 25 °C was unstable over time, which reduced by 16% on average at 12 h.

Performance of coagulant-aided biomass filtration to protect ultrafiltration from membrane fouling in biogas slurry concentration

Wenjing Cui,Shiyu Li,Ming Xie,Qing Chen,Guoxue Li,Wenhai Luo

This study investigated the performance of a novel coagulant-aided biomass filtration for rapid pretreatment of biogas slurry to prevent subsequent membrane concentration from severe fouling for maximum resource recovery. Potassium aluminum sulfate (PAS) and chitosan were used as representative inorganic and organic coagulant, respectively. Cornstalk was used as the biomass media. Results show that blending PAS with cornstalk as filtration media could increase the removal of suspended solids (SS), organic matter, and nutrients from biogas slurry in comparison with single PAS coagulation or cornstalk filtration. Thus, PAS-aided cornstalk filtration could significantly reduce membrane fouling to double water flux in subsequent ultrafiltration of biogas slurry. Compared to PAS, chitosan with polyacrylamide led to more SS sedimentation in coagulation of biogas slurry. Nevertheless, chitosan has low dissolution and could be flushed to permeate when mixed with cornstalk to compromise the filtration performance. After biogas slurry pretreatment, the spent PAS-aided cornstalk was highly compostable with rapid temperature increase to above 60 °C within three days. Heavy metals and antibiotics retained from biogas slurry could be effectively passivated and removed in composting, respectively. As such, spent PAS-aided cornstalk media could be transformed to mature compost with seed germination index of >120%.

Catalytic air oxidation of biogas slurry using Cu sub-nanocluster supported by mesoporous TiZrO4 and protected by SiO2 shell

Jiabai Cai,Huan Li,Wenjia Huang,Shuting He,Kai Feng,Masaki Takaoka

Biogas slurry, an inevitable outcome of anaerobic digestion (AD), is a treatment burden for urban environmental management. In this study, two kinds of biogas slurry (slurry J and slurry C), collected from the AD plants in Japan and China, were treated using novel TiZrO 4 @Cu and TiZrO 4 @Cu@SiO 2 multilayered hollow spheres containing Cu sub-nanoclusters as the catalyst. The results showed that the chemical oxygen demand (COD) was removed by 63 % for slurry J and 44 % for slurry C after 5 h. The Cu sub-nanoclusters acted as co-catalysts and active centers, facilitating rapid electron transfer to oxygen molecules and forming highly reactive •O 2 − and •OH species (Use slurry J as the based solution). These free radicals cleaved the interconnecting bonds between benzene rings, disintegrated the ring structure, formed intermediate compounds such as n-hexylic acid, and ultimately mineralized organic pollutants in biogas slurry into CO 2 and H 2 O. At the same time, TiZrO 4 @Cu@SiO 2 had excellent stability due to the protection of the SiO 2 shell and reduced threefold Cu leaching than TiZrO 4 @Cu. The COD removal rate was always 60 % in six cycles in the slurry J. The new catalyst ensured the high performance of catalytic air oxidation at low temperatures, which has significant potential as an environmentally friendly and energy-saving method for organic wastewater treatment.

Enhanced Biogas Production by Ligninolytic Strain Enterobacter hormaechei KA3 for Anaerobic Digestion of Corn Straw

Qing Zhang,Jing Zhang,Shuai Zhao,Peizhi Song,Yanli Chen,Pu Liu,Chunlan Mao,Xiangkai Li

Lignin-feeding insect gut is a natural ligninolytic microbial bank for the sustainable conversion of crop straw to biogas. However, limited studies have been done on highly efficient microbes. Here, an efficient ligninolytic strainEnterobacter hormaecheiKA3 was isolated from the gut microbiomes of lignin-feedingHypomeces squamosusFabricius, and its effects on lignin degradation and anaerobic digestion were investigated. No research has been reported. Results showed that strain KA3 had better lignin-degrading ability for corn straw with a higher lignin-degrading rate (32.05%) and lignin peroxidase activity (585.2 U/L). Furthermore, the highest cumulative biogas yield (59.19 L/kg-VS) and methane yield (14.76 L/kg-VS) were obtained for KA3 inoculation, which increased by 20% and 31%, respectively, compared to CK. Higher removal rates of COD, TS, and vs. of 41.6%, 43.11%, and 66.59% were also found. Moreover, microbial community diversity increased as digestion time prolonged in TG, and bacteria were more diverse than archaea. The dominant genus taxon, for methanogens, wasMethanosatein TG, while in CK wasMethanosarcina. For bacteria, dominant taxa were similar for all groups, which wereSolibacillusandClostridium. Therefore, strain KA3 improved the methane conversion of the substrate. This study could provide a new microbial resource and practical application base for lignin degradation. Keywords:microbial lignin degradation;gut microbiome;Enterobacter hormaecheiKA3;biogas production;microbial community

Study of biogas slurry concentrated by reverse osmosis system: characteristics, optimization, and mechanism

Tianxiang Zheng,Zonglian Qiu,Qizhou Dai,Jianmeng Chen

Biogas slurry, also called liquid digestate, refers to the liquid part of the anaerobic digestate produced from the anaerobic digestion process, which is an environmental pollution source if it is discharged without proper treatment. To recover the nutrients in the biogas slurry, a membrane system was designed to concentrate in the work. The effects of pretreatment technology including gravity settling and ultrafiltration process were studied via analyzing the chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen (NH 3 -N), total nitrogen (TN), and conductivity. Reverse osmosis was applied in the biogas slurry concentration. The performance of reverse osmosis membrane used in the concentration process was studied by analyzing the permeate and concentrate (retentate), the volume reduction factor, and the concentration factor. The suitable parameters were selected as 20.0-25.0°C for influent temperature, 0.8-1.0Mpa for operating pressure, and 6.0-8.0 for influent pH. Furthermore, the feasible concentration factor was evaluated as 4. The economic, environmental, and social benefits could be gained if (concentrated) biogas slurry was used as an alternative to chemical fertilizers. Practitioner points Reverse osmosis system was established for biogas slurry concentrating. The operational factors were optimized on biogas slurry concentrating and separation. The biogas slurry separation mechanism was discussed.

Renewable hydrogen production from biogas using iron-based chemical looping technology

Zhentong Wang,Zhiqiang Gong,Yusan Turap,Yidi Wang,Zhe Zhang,Wei Wang

An integrated recycling waste bioenergy and manufacturing low-carbon hydrogen by a method to convert biogas to hydrogen based on the chemical looping concepts was proposed in this study. Biogas from biomass anaerobic digestion and pyrolysis was employed in the reduction step as the feedstock of fuel gas. Simulated marsh gas (CH 4 and CO 2 ) and pyrolysis gas (CO and H 2 ) were used to validate the feasibility of the reduction performance with iron (III) oxide at different reaction temperatures. The experiments were conducted by using a thermogravimetric analyzer and a tandem packed-bed reactor. As for marsh gas, the reaction behavior was completely different under different CO 2 concentrations and converting temperatures. The reduction reaction with CH 4 would be divided into three stages, including complete combustion, competition reaction, and partial oxidation stage. Furthermore, the syngas with a tailored ratio of 1:1 can be produced without CH 4 breakthrough by adjusting CO 2 concentration. Besides, the total H 2 production achieved 241.9 mL per gram of oxygen carrier with a purity of 98.29%. Regarding the pyrolysis gas, the solid conversion and CO breakthrough curve were investigated. Compared to a single reactor, seven reactors were required to increase the average solid conversion from 34.1% to 42% and reduced the total redox time from 705.6 min to 437.7 min. Overall, this study provided a link between waste bioenergy recycling and H 2 generation with a novel chemical looping hydrogen generation (CLHG) system and supplied theoretical support for scaling up the packed-bed reactor to improve H 2 production efficiency.

Food waste biogas residue-derived composite biochar for effective Cu2+ removal by capacitive deionization

Zhenyi Zhao,Lili Yan,Guanghui Li,Pinhua Rao,Benjiao Huo,Tiantian Li,Yuliang Li,Zhaoziyue Zhang,Yiran Sun,Jiao Xue

Capacitor deionization (CDI) technology has potential applications in heavy metal removal with low operating cost, environmental friendliness, and comprehensive benefits for water remediation. In this work, using food waste biogas residue as the carbon source, food waste biogas residue composite biochar with rich pore structure was prepared by adding tobacco stalk and KOH activation as the CDI electrode material, and Cu 2+ was taken as target pollutant for heavy metal removal studies. The pore volume of food waste biogas residue composite biochar with activation temperature at 600 ℃ was 2 times larger than that of food waste biogas residue and tobacco stalk biochar. The influence of temperature on structure, composition, electrochemical performance of biochar was further systematically investigated. Food waste biogas residue composite biochar with activation temperature at 800 ℃ (ABTC800) exhibited much larger specific surface area (2044.58 m 2 /g), abundant porous structure (1.29 cm 3 /g), and higher specific capacitance. The removal capacity of ABTC800 electrode can be up to 171.26 mg/g at 3 h in 50 mg/L Cu 2+ solution at a voltage of 0.8 V. Weak acidity is more favorable for Cu 2+ adsorption. ABTC800 had an excellent adsorption capacity towards Cu 2+ . In addition, characterizations revealed that Cu 2+ removal mainly relied on electrostatic adsorption, surface complexation, precipitation, and reduction during the whole process. This study proposed a promising strategy of biogas residue reuse for heavy metal removal.

Well-Dispersed ZIF-8 on Randomly Lamellar Clinoptilolite as an Adsorbent Showing Enhanced CO2/CH4 Selectivity for Biogas Gas Separation

Yingying Cheng,Yuanye Zhuang,Shiyang Bai,Meng Ge,Jihong Sun,Jingjing Sun,Xufeng Gong

The removal of CO2 from biogas is critically important for environmental protection and energy applications yet remains technically challenging in the chemical industry. In this work, novel composite adsorbents featuring ZIF-8 uniformly dispersed on randomly oriented clinoptilolite lamellae (LCP) were designed and fabricated through a straightforward composite method. The synthesis sequentially incorporated metal precursors into LCP via ion exchange and salt addition and then introduced organic ligands to generate ZIF-8. Comprehensive characterizations, including XRD, FT-IR, N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, SEM, and TG analyses, confirmed the physicochemical properties and structural features of the composites. The synthesized Zn-LCP/ZIF-8 materials exhibited exceptional CO2/CH4 separation performance, demonstrating ultralow CH4 adsorption capacity (<0.1 mmol/g) coupled with superior CO2/CH4 selectivity (≈28). Complementary molecular simulations using Material Studio software provided mechanistic insights into the adsorption and separation behavior, which further confirmed the superiority of the composite structure in CO2/CH4 separation. These results establish an effective strategy for biogas purification, while offering new perspectives for enhancing the CO2/CH4 adsorption selectivity.

Preparation of phosphoric acid modified antibiotic mycelial residues biochar: Loading of nano zero-valent iron and promotion on biogas production

Zhifang Ning,Bin Xu,Weizhang Zhong,Chun Liu,Xue Qin,Weibo Feng,Lin Zhu

Antibiotic mycelial residues (AMRs), as recyclable hazardous waste, can realize efficient utilization by reasonable treatment. To solve the problems of undeveloped pore structure and low specific surface area existed in AMR biochar, this study first modified biochar by phosphoric acid (H 3 PO 4 ) to prepare PBC (H 3 PO 4 -modified biochar). Then, PBC was used as carrier to load nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) for preparation of nZVI/PBC. Finally, the biochar materials were used to promote anaerobic digestion (AD) of corn straw. The results showed that H 3 PO 4 -modification can effectively improve the specific surface area, pore structure, and electron donating capacity of AMRs biochar. The using of PBC as carrier to load nZVI attenuated the agglomeration of nZVI particles. Both PBC and nZVI/PBC improved the AD process, with biogas yield enhanced by 29.63% and 29.26%, respectively. The nZVI/PBC exhibited higher ability in maintaining the stability of AD system and promotion of fiber degradation than PBC.
