In this article, a 3D photocatalytic support with different Poisson’s ratio was used for the first time to control the photocatalytic production rate of hydrogen. It was created by a stereo-lithography method, and the support with the most negative Poisson’s ratio got the best result. The Poisson’s ratio of the 3D structure influences the rate of hydrogen production , and it is important for the photocatalyst supports to be porous for light to penetrate into them. A series of Ce doped CdS photocatalysts were produced and immobilized on 3D multicellular Al 2 O 3 supports. By changing the proportion of Ce 3+ doped into the CdS photocatalysts 1 % of Ce 3+ exhibited optimal hydrogen production, which was 222.9 % compared to that of the pure CdS. Using the 3D photocatalytic support with different Poisson’s ratio, the photocatalytic production rate of hydrogen increased by 128 %.

Chemiresistive SiOC Negative Poisson's ratio structures for gas detection under thermal and pressure loading were constructed by vat photopolymerization and surface sensitization. Metal-organic framework-derived SnO 2 nanocubes modification provided the structures with sensing capability, while the high deformation-resistant SiOC substrates protected the integrity and connectivity of the sensing layer. The resulting SnO 2 /SiOC sensing structures exhibited high selectivity to formaldehyde vapor and showed a response value of 3.6 to 100 ppm formaldehyde vapor. The structures also had a short sensing delay with the response and recovery times of 32 s and 41 s, respectively. Besides, the independent deformation of the units maintained the dimensional accuracy and avoided thermal fatigue failure of the structure at the working temperature by dispersing the thermal stress, at which the coefficient of thermal expansion reached 0.71 × 10 −6 /K, revealing a near-zero expansion behavior. Meanwhile, the mechanical performance can be adjusted by structure optimization, and the compressive strength and Young's modulus of the structure reached 51.25 MPa and 5.14 GPa, respectively. Taking advantage of the strengthened and self-adaptive design, the structure exhibited high load-carrying capacity and low thermal expansion performance, providing a facile strategy for highly stable gas detection under complex loading environments.

Soft network metamaterials are widely used in fields such as flexible electronics, tissue engineering, and biomedicine due to their superior properties including low density, high stretchability, and high breathability. However, the prediction and customization of the nonlinear mechanical behavior of soft network metamaterials remain a challenging problem. In this study, a family of hydrogel-based network metamaterials with biological tissue-like mechanical properties are developed based on a machine learning-driven optimization design method. Numerical and experimental results explain the relationship between the mechanical properties of the designed metamaterials and their microstructural features and stretching ratios. The results indicate that the hydrogel-based network metamaterials exhibit J-shaped stress-deformation (σ–λ) behavior similar to biological tissues. This phenomenon arises from the transition of the deformation mode of metamaterials from bending-dominated to stretching-dominated as the stretching ratio increases. Based on the proposed design scheme, the Poisson’s ratio of metamaterials can be adjusted within a remarkably wide range of −1.06 to 1.34. Furthermore, through optimizing the design parameters of the metamaterial, the customization of network metamaterials with biological tissue-like zero Poisson’s ratio behavior and stress response is achieved. The potential applications of hydrogel-based network metamaterials are demonstrated through artificial skin and LED integrated device. This research offers novel insights into predicting, designing, and fabricating the mechanical behavior of soft network metamaterials.

In this study, the anti-chiral negative Poisson's ratio structure BaTiO 3 piezoelectric ceramics were fabricated by vat photopolymerization 3D printing technology, which obtained an ultra-high transverse piezoelectric coefficient d 31 . Here, we performed uniaxial compressive load simulations and electric field-driven lattice in-plane strain response simulations, which showed an in-plane negative Poisson's ratio of −1 for the BaTiO 3 ceramics. Its strain amplification is about 10 times that of BaTiO 3 bulk material. Using the principle of positive and negative piezoelectric effects, we measured effective transverse piezoelectric coefficients d 31 for different dimensional parameters. The effective transverse piezoelectric coefficient d 31 with a maximum of 599 pm/V was detected at a ligament aspect ratio of 3.6 for the negative Poisson's ratio BaTiO 3 piezoelectric ceramics , which is 7.7 times higher than that of the bulk material. For the prepared hydrophone, test results show that the effective hydrostatic strain constant d h and Hydrostatic Figure of Merit (HFOM) of BaTiO 3 piezoelectric ceramics with a negative Poisson's ratio structure are 29.6 and 808 times higher than those of bulk BaTiO 3 .

Cellular plastics have been widely used in transportation, aerospace, and personal safety applications owing to their excellent mechanical, thermal, and acoustic properties. It is highly desirable to impart them with a complex porous structure and composition distribution to obtain specific functionality for various engineering applications, which is challenging with conventional foaming technologies. Herein, it is demonstrated that this can be achieved through the controlled freezing process of a monomer/water emulsion, followed by cryopolymerization and room temperature thawing. As ice is used as a template, this method is environmentally friendly and capable of producing cellular plastics with various microstructures by harnessing the numerous morphologies of ice crystals. In particular, a cellular plastic with a radially aligned structure shows a negative Poisson’s ratio under compression. The rigid plastic shows a much higher energy dissipation capability compared to other materials with similar negative Poisson’s ratios. Additionally, the simplicity and scalability of this approach provides new possibilities for fabricating high-performance cellular plastics with well-defined porous structures and composition distributions.

The elastic properties of a zeolitic metal-azolate framework, Zn(mtz)2(MAF-7, mtz−= 3-methyl-1,2,4-triazolate), have been examined from the view point of the first principles calculations and experiments. Our results demonstrate that the three independent elastic constants of MAF-7 are about 5.0–73.3% higher than those of ZIF-8, though they are isomorphic. The electron-donating effect of the nitrogen atom at the 2-position in mtz- ring dominantly accounts for such a prominent difference. The detailed analysis of the full elastic tensors reveals that the volume moduli, shear moduli, and Poisson’s ratios of MAF-7 are about 3.4% to 20.1%, 3.2% to 20.6%, and −30.3% to 12.3% higher than those of ZIF-8. The underlying structural reasons were discussed to explain the anisotropic difference of those properties. Moreover, the conclusion deduced from first-principle calculations was also been verified by nanoindentation and high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements.Keywords:zinc-triazolate framework;elastic constants;volume moduli;shear moduli;Poisson’s ratios

Although mechanical metamaterials possess high specific energy absorption, they suffer from drawbacks such as irreversible deformations and non-adjustable mechanical properties. Magnetic excitation is considered to be one of the most promising methods for special working environments; for which uniform incorporation of UV-cured four-dimensional (4D) printed resin is considered to be an effective approach to achieving fine structural features. Our study investigated the impact of soft magnetic particle content on the mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties of a shape memory polymer matrix material. This paper presents a 4D printed metamaterial with a zero Poisson's ratio that can sense magnetic field intensity and alter its mechanical properties. Its rapid shape recovery, achieved through magnetic excitation, enables multiple energy absorption within a short timeframe. By increasing the curvature radius, the stress concentration in the hexagonal honeycomb structure is reduced, ensuring the metamaterial maintains its zero Poisson's ratio even under in-plane loading. The study investigates the energy absorption performance and force–displacement curve of metamaterials with different layers and cell sizes, focusing on a four-layer metamaterial for the analysis. Furthermore, the paper explores the tunable energy absorption characteristics of the four-layer metamaterial under time-varying electromagnetic fields, aiming to enhance the stability of a lander's center of gravity while landing on uneven terrain.

The rapid advancement of flexible and stretchable electronics has attracted intensive attention in recent decades. However, challenges still remain in developing wearable and sustainable power sources with comparable portability and stretchability. Here, a novel type of stretchable fiber-shaped triboelectric nanogenerator (AXF-TENG) was fabricated by inserting a negative Poisson-ratio auxetic fiber into a positive Poisson-ratio hollow circular sleeve, forming a synergistic structured TENG composed of opposite Poisson's ratios. Owing to the advanced structural designs, the inner auxetic fiber would expand in all directions to more effectively contact with the shrunk outer steel wire sleeve under stretching. The peak-to-peak voltage and transfer charge of composite based AXF-TENG could reach up to 42 V and 12.5 nC, respectively. The fabricated AXF-TENG can be used as a self‐powered multifunctional sensor to detect human motions and be woven into an energy‐harvesting fabric to scavenge biomechanical energy. With open-circuit voltage of 46 V and maximum instantaneous power density of 52.36 mW/m 2 , the AXF-TENG fabric was capable of lighting up 20 light emitting diodes (LEDs), charging commercial capacitors, powering an electronic watch and a calculator. All of these merits of the proposed AXF-TENGs suggest their promising potentials for versatile applications in biomechanical energy harvesting and self-powered sensing.

In the realm of safety protection, there is a critical demand for materials capable of superior energy absorption and adaptability across diverse application scenarios. Here, this study presents integrated two-phase negative Poisson’s ratio (NPR) composites with adjustable mechanical properties sensitive to magnetic field, temperature and impact load. It is achieved by substituting the vacancy of re-entrant structures (frame phase) with soft paraffin/magnetorheological plastomer (MRP) fillers (matrix phase). The paraffin/MRP exhibits temperature-sensitive properties, enhanced magnetorheological (MR) effect (up to 4178%) and shear thickening (ST) effect (up to 2365%). Through quasi-static compression and dynamic impact tests, the composites demonstrate remarkable adaptability in impact resistance. Specifically, the first peak force exhibits responsiveness to changes in magnetic flux density, temperature, and impact velocity, with respective variations of 80.6%, 68.2%, and 30.3%. The design strategy paves the way for tunable impact resistant materials with potential for extreme environment buffering applications.

In this study, a micro-molding technology was used to prepare the microneedles (MNs), while a texture analyzer was used to measure its Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio and compression breaking force, to evaluate whether the MNs can penetrate the skin. The effects of different materials were characterized by their ability to withstand stresses using the Structural Mechanics Module of COMSOL Multiphysics. Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) was chosen as the needle formulation material with varying quantities of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and hyaluronic acid (HA) to adjust the viscosity, brittleness, hardness and solubility of the material. The results of both the experimental tests and the predictions indicated that the hardest tip material had a solids content of 15% (w/w) with a 1:2 (w/w) CMC: HA ratio. Furthermore, it was shown that a solid content of 10% (w/w) with a 1:5 (w/w) CMC: PVA ratio is suitable for making patches. The correlation between the mechanical properties and the different materials was found using the simulation analysis as well as the force required for different dissolving microneedles (DMNs) to penetrate the skin, which significantly promoted the research progress of microneedle transdermal drug delivery. Keywords:biodegradable dissolving microneedle;mechanical properties;Young’s modulus;Poisson’s ratio;finite element analysis

Cellulose aerogel is a promising cushioning material for impact-resistant applications owing to its low density and high porosity. However, the weakness of mechanical strength and stress dispersion effects resulted in local damage and failure of aerogels. Herein, we constructed significantly negative Poisson’s ratio effect of nanocellulose aerogels by covalently cross-linking cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and polyacrylamide (PAM), and introducing concave hexagonal structure. The nanocellulose aerogels with concave hexagonal exhibited an anisotropic negative Poisson’s ratio (maximum negative Poisson’s ratio of −0.203), providing high energy-absorbing efficiency and large deformation buffer space. During compression, the crosslinked networks formed within the CNF/PAM cellular walls act as strain transfer channels, further improving the strain conductivity and the mechanical strength of the nanocellulose aerogels. The negative Poisson’s ratio structure and dense cellular walls provided the aerogel excellent stress dispersion and energy-absorbing effects at 30% strain, and excellent impact-resistant properties under the strong impact of a steel ball. This work provides an attractive strategy to construct aerogels with eco-friendly, lightweight, higher strength, and negative Poisson’s ratio structure and extend the applications in the field of impact energy-absorbing and cushioning, i.e., aeronautics, high speed vehicle, and packaging machinery.

Piezoelectric auxetic metamaterials with microstructures hold significant promise for the design of force and tactile sensors. Here, a maskless ultraviolet (UV) lithography-based optical 3D μ-printing with high-resolution, rapid prototyping, and customized fabrication is reported to prepare polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF)-based flexible piezoelectric sensors. With customized crosslinking for the mixture of PVDF solutions, acrylate resins, and additives, these sensors feature 2D negative Poisson’s ratio (2D-NPR) metamaterial networks and 3D microgrid structures on flexible substrates, offering optimized mechanical and electrical properties. Initially, the 2D-NPR metamaterial networks demonstrate a sensitivity of 2.09 mV/°, and a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 30.87 dB for detecting bending behaviors. Additionally, further mechanical designs on 3D arrayed pyramid-shaped (AP-S) sensors with microgrid structures and electronic code locks composed of this sensor array significantly enhance their versatility in detecting vector loads and gesture codes. Notably, compared to planar PVDF sensors, the performance of this 3D microgrid structure sensor has been significantly improved by 1.53-fold, with a 4.25-fold enhancement for the limits of detection. Moreover, the proposed 2D and 3D sensors provide exceptional temperature stability and hysteresis characteristics. Leveraging machine learning algorithms, these flexible piezoelectric sensors can accurately detect human rehabilitation states, marking significant progress in advanced wearable electronics.
