Thin-film-based Fano resonators (TFFRs) offer a promising route to scalable, high-sensitivity refractive index (RI) sensing without complex nanostructure fabrication. However, their vacuum-deposited, porous, and lossy dielectrics are limited compositionally to perform ion detection in biochemical applications. This study introduces an ion-responsive TFFR platform by integrating two resonators, namely a colloidal metal nanocrystal (NC) film and a metal–insulator–metal (MIM) cavity. Upon precise ligand ion treatment, the solution-processed NC film can provide widely tunable RI for coupling with the MIM cavity, enabling continuous spectral tuning of the TFFR between Fano and Lorentzian line shapes in calculations. It showcases this design using Au and Ag NCs and SCN − and Cl − ligand ions, respectively. Chemical, structural, and optical analyses track the RI evolution within the NC film as the ligand ion concentration changes stepwise from 1 × 10 −6 to 10 mg mL −1 , revealing reproducibility and sample-to-sample variation <3.5%. The measured distinctive spectral signatures corroborate simulations to enable efficient machine learning algorithms that predict SCN − concentrations below 1 × 10 −3 mg mL −1 with 97.4% accuracy. The NC/MIM TFFR achieves electrode-free detection of SCN − and Cl − ions with exceptional detection limits of 245.6 and 3.83 nmol L −1 , respectively, in a dynamic range exceeding 10⁷.

Gold nanorings are attractive as plasmonic metal nanocrystals because they have a hollow inner cavity. Their enhanced electric field inside the ring cavity is accessible, which is highly desirable for assembling with other optical components and studying their plasmon-coupling behaviors. However, the lack of robust methods for synthesizing size-controllable and uniform Au nanorings severely impedes the study of their attractive plasmonic properties and plasmon-driven applications. Herein, an improved wet-chemistry method is reported for the synthesis of monodisperse colloidal Au nanorings. Using circular Au nanodisks with different thicknesses and diameters as templates, Au nanorings are synthesized with thicknesses varied from ≈30 to ≈50 nm and cavity sizes varied from ≈90 to ≈40 nm. The produced Au nanorings are assembled with colloidal Au nanospheres to yield Au nanoring–nanosphere heterodimers in sphere-in-ring and sphere-on-ring configurations on substrates. The sphere-in-ring heterodimers exhibit the interesting feature of plasmonic Fano resonance upon the excitation of the dark quadrupolar plasmon mode of the Au nanorings. The open cavity in a nanoring holds a great promise for studying plasmon-coupled systems, which will facilitate the construction of advanced metamaterials and high-performance Fano-based devices.

Multiple Fano resonances (mFRs) are arising as a promising optical platform to achieve precise sensing and detection. However, experimentally achieving mFRs by simple structures has remained challenging, which impedes the widespread applications of mFRs. Herein a simple structure composed of a single colloidal metal nanoparticle and a transition metal dichalcogenide flake to simultaneously achieve up to 8 FRs in experiments is demonstrated. Combining theoretical and experimental techniques, that an out-of-plane plasmon mode of the metal nanoparticle interferes with the Fabry–Pérot cavity modes from the WS 2 flake to form mFRs in the visible region is proved. The simplicity and generality of the method further allow us to systematically study the tunability of the mFRs, in terms of the peak/dip positions and the number of FRs, by changing the structural parameters, which include the thickness of the WS 2 flake, size and shape of the plasmonic nanoparticle. In addition, the quality of the mFRs is proved to be adjustable by tuning the reflectivity of the substrate in the system. The highest quality factor and spectral contrast of the achieved resonances are up to ≈180 and ≈0.95, respectively. The simple structure and high-quality optical modes will prosper applications in precise sensing and light modulation.

Construction of ordered patterns of plasmonic nanoparticles is greatly important for nanophotonics relevant applications. We have reported a facile and low-cost magnetic field induced self-assembly approach to construct plasmonic superparamagnetic nanoshell (SN) chains up to several hundred micrometers in a few seconds in a large area without templates or other assistance processes. Experimental and theoretical investigations of the near- and far-field optical properties indicate that the super- and sub-radiant modes of the SN chains continuously redshift with the increase of SN number and the Fano resonance emerges in the infinite double- and triple-line SN chains. Strong plasmon coupling effects in the SN chains result in great electric field enhancements at visible and infrared wavelengths, which indicates that these chain structures potentially can be used as a common substrate for both surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) application. This fabrication method also offers a general strategy alternative to top-down processing that enables the construction of nanostructures for metamaterials, electromagnetic energy transport, and optical waveguide.

Improving the sensitivity of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors is a crucial field of research, as it enables the detection of lower concentrations of analytes and smaller biomolecular interactions. This study developed a novel Fano resonance (FR) sensor with exceptional sensitivity and figure of merit ( FOM ) by combining graphene oxide (GO) with a plasmonic silver film-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) hybrid nanostructure. The results demonstrated that the FR-GO sensor achieved an average refractive index (RI) sensitivity of 33.6 μm/RIU, representing a 20.53 % improvement over the FR sensor (27.9 μm/RIU). Additionally, the FOM increased by 36.25 %, reaching a maximum of 2383.82 RUI −1 , which was two orders of magnitude higher than traditional SPR sensors. To evaluate its practical application, the sensor was used to detect carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), a tumor biomarker. The proposed sensor exhibited a measurement sensitivity of 5.2 nm/(ng/ml) and a limit of detection ( LOD ) of 63.5 pg/ml. Furthermore, the method demonstrated good selectivity, reproducibility, and stability. The enhanced sensitivity and FOM of this sensor design have the potential to advance early disease detection and biomolecular interaction studies.
