Study on Plugging Microfracture by Using High-Temperature Emulsified Bitumen

Liang Yang,Xiang Chen,Linhao Gu,Yan Chen,Shuang Shi

A new kind of modified emulsified bitumen used to plug a microcrack was studied. The sizes of high-temperature emulsified bitumen were fit for the sizes of the microcrack, which were approved by the scanning electron microscope and laser particle size analyzer. Some tests have been designed to demonstrate that the polymer could be used to promote the softening point of modified asphalt, and the high-temperature emulsified bitumen has also shown an excellent performance in terms of static filtration, the viscous coefficient, and extreme pressure lubrication, as well as to inhibit ting shale expansion. The permeability recovery could reach 88.26%, which meets the specification requirements. The mud cake, which was formed by high-temperature emulsified bitumen as an additive, was thin, tough, and dense, which was proved by the scanning electron microscope. The process used to obtain this additive was simple, and the performance of the plugging microfracture was excellent, so this kind of plugging agent could have a better application future.

Nanobiocatalyst Based on Enzyme Immobilization for Mudcake Removal and Reservoir Damage Control

Jun Yang,Guancheng Jiang,Shengming Huang,Jingtian Yi,Tengfei Dong,Yinbo He,Lili Yang,Qi Feng,Ge Wang

In this study, a nanobiocatalyst [α-amylase/γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane-modified silica nanoparticles (A-SNPs)] was prepared for efficient mudcake removal and reservoir damage control during horizontal drilling and openhole completion. The molecular structure, thermal stability, and colloidal properties of the nanobiocatalyst were characterized by using FTIR, TGA, particle size, zeta potential, SEM, and TEM tests. The results confirmed that A-SNPs were securely encapsulated on the surface of α-amylase via covalent imine bonding (C═N), significantly enhancing the stability of α-amylase. Mudcake and polymer plugging removal experiments demonstrated that soaking mudcake in a 1% nanobiocatalyst solution for 4 h reduced the filtrate return time to under 10 min. Additionally, polymer removal efficiency exceeded 63.17% at 500 psi. Core flow experiments combined with NMR analysis revealed that the nanobiocatalyst effectively mitigated permeability damage at 95 °C, achieving a core permeability restoration value of 82.88%. The nanobiocatalyst significantly reduced the fluid flow resistance and improved hydrocarbon availability within the reservoir porous medium. In conclusion, nanobiocatalysts have great potential for application in oil and gas drilling and hydrocarbon recovery.

An Investigation on the Function of Mud Cakes on the Inhibition of Low Molecular Inhibitor for Water-Based Drilling Fluids

Wenxin Dong,Xiaolin Pu,Biao Ma

The major low molecular inhibitors showed inhibition in the hydration of clay in the laboratory for water-based drilling fluids, according to the principle of intercalation adsorption. However, inhibitors have failed and caused serious engineering accidents in drilling oil and natural gas. This paper investigated the transmission of several of drilling fluids to indicate whether low molecular inhibitor for drilling can effectively inhibit the wellbore hydration. The inhibition of drilling fluid with the plugging of mud cakes, was significantly weakened based on the hydration expansion of cores and cutting recoveries. The residual contents of inhibitors were determined with the precolumn derivation of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis and were chartered with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis in the structure of the derivative. The clogging behavior of the mud cake was described by environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). Experiments show that 40 wt% to 90 wt% by weight of the corrosion inhibitor cannot pass through the mud cake in the dynamic filtration of the drilling fluid. The mud cake can be further divided into a nanostructure layer, a homogeneous layer and an anisotropic layer with different permeability. Most inhibitors should be limited to the nanostructure layer and the homogeneous layer. Keywords:low molecular inhibitors;drilling fluids;mud cake;plugging

Chitin-Based Amphiphobic Nanocomposites for Maintaining Wellbore Stability of Oil-Based Drilling Fluid

Hongyan Du,Kaihe Lv,Mei-Chun Li,Jinsheng Sun,Xianbin Huang,Yuan Geng,Haokun Shen,Yecheng Li,Muhammad Arqam Khan

Drilling fluid additives that maintain wellbore stability have attracted considerable attention because of the frequent occurrence of wellbore instability accidents during drilling operations. However, achieving long-term wellbore stability in practical applications remains challenging. Herein, we report the application of chitin-based amphiphobic nanocomposites (PFTMS@ChNCs/SiO2) to maintain the wellbore stability of oil-based drilling fluids (ODFs). The PFTMS@ChNCs/SiO2 was prepared using a template approach, generating silica shells on the surface of chitin nanocrystals via the sol–gel method, followed by modification with 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltrimethoxysilane (PFTMS). The PFTMS@ChNCs/SiO2 exhibited excellent thermal and chemical stability; even after heating in hot air at 200 °C for 24 h or soaking in hot fluids at 150 °C for 7 d, the contact angle of water and oil on the PFTMS@ChNCs/SiO2 remained above 120°, making them suitable for the harsh drilling fluid conditions. The shale treated with PFTMS@ChNCs/SiO2 demonstrated remarkable liquid-repelling properties and maintained good mechanical strength even after prolonged immersion in high-temperature fluids. Moreover, incorporating PFTMS@ChNCs/SiO2 into ODFs improved their performance, including enhanced rheological properties, better filtration control, and improved mud cake quality. Filtration tests showed a 39.6% reduction in fluid loss, whereas the filtration medium permeability decreased to 0.211 × 10–4 mD. This study presents a promising method for wellbore stabilization in ODFs and a direction for chitin nanocrystals in oil and gas engineering applications.

Application of modified starch in high-temperature-resistant colloidal gas aphron (CGA) drilling fluids

Wenxi Zhu,Xiuhua Zheng

Colloidal gas aphrons (CGA) are finding increasing application in depleted oil and gas reservoirs because of their distinctive characteristics. To overcome the limitations of its application in high-temperature drilling, a modified starch foams stabilizer WST with a temperature resistance of 160 °C was synthesized via radical polymerization. The chemical structure of WST was characterized by Fourier infrared spectroscopy and results showed that all three monomers acrylamide, 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid, and N-vinylpyrrolidone have been grafted onto starch efficiently. Based on the microscopic observations, highly stable aphrons have been successfully generated in the WST-based CGA drilling fluids within 160 °C, and most aphrons lie in the range of 10–150 μm. WST can provide higher viscosity at high temperatures compared to xanthan gum, which helps to extend foam life and stability by enhancing the film strength and slowing down the gravity drainage. Results show that WST-CGA aged at elevated temperatures (120–160 °C) is a high-performance drilling fluid with excellent shear-thinning behavior, cutting carrying capacity, and filtration control ability. The significant improvement of filtration control and well-building capability at high temperatures is an important advantage of WST-CGA, which can be attributed to the enhancement of mud cake quality by WST.
