Model derivation and validation for 2D polymeric nanonets: Origin, evolution, and regulation

Shichao Zhang,Kun Chen,Jianyong Yu,Bin Ding

Numerical models that are capable to quantitatively elaborate the formation of novel two-dimensional (2D) nanonets during electrospinning/netting would have broad technological implications for areas ranging from sensing devices and individual protection to industrial filtration and separation; however, creating such models has proved extremely challenging. Here we report novel numerical models for clarifying the origin, evolution, and regulation of the nanonets via combining the ejection modes of Taylor cone apex and the phase separation of charged droplets. Our models propose two critical condition formulas for the generation of jets and droplets, and a LCST phase diagram combined with concentration sweep paths for the nanonets or non-porous films. The resulting model predications exhibit excellent agreement with the experimental results obtained via varying the solution properties and process parameters. The successful model derivation for the nanonets formation may provide new insights into the design and development of 2D multifunctional nanomaterials for various applications.

Ultrahigh-frequency electrohydrodynamic jetting with adjustable modes for rapid printing of high-resolution patterns

Zihao Li,Weiwei He,Yanzhen Zhang,Jide Wang,Guofang Hu,Yuyao Wu,Dege Li

The electrohydrodynamic (EHD) inkjet printing is rooted in the creep effect exhibited by fluid interfaces subjected to high-intensity electric fields. It utilizes the micro-jetting from the tip of the Taylor cone to print intricate patterns with sub-micron feature sizes. However, due to the limitations inherent in the jetting mechanism, the highest printing frequencies for conventional EHD are limited to several hundred Hertz. Here, we discover a novel phenomenon where the vibration of meniscus in an electric field can induce EHD jetting within microseconds, or even sub-microseconds. Based on this phenomenon, we propose a new method for achieving megahertz level EHD jetting based on meniscus vibrations (MVEHD). This paper systematically elucidates the fundamental mechanisms of the forced meniscus vibration, cone sharpening, and the jetting formation through a combination of experimental research and numerical simulation. Additionally, adjustable continues inkjet (CIJ) and drop on demand (DOD) inkjet printing modes were developed, demonstrating the potential of dual-mode technology in the development of automotive transparent glass heaters (TGHs) and Micro-LED displays. This method effectively elevates the efficiency of traditional EHD by 2 to 4 orders of magnitude, thereby laying a theoretical and technical foundation for the industrial application of high-throughput EHD technology.

Roles of Coaxial Spinneret in Taylor Cone and Morphology of Core–Shell Fibers

Masha Li,Yuansheng Zheng,Binjie Xin,Yinqi Xu

This paper reports on the roles of three coaxial spinnerets with different electric field distributions, including retracting spinneret, flat spinneret, and protruding spinneret in the Taylor cone, jet motion, and resultant core–shell fibers. The Taylor cone, jet motion, and the morphology and internal structure of resultant core–shell fibers for these three above-mentioned spinnerets are systematically studied. The results show that the Taylor cone, jet motion, and core–shell fiber morphology are influenced by the electric field distribution induced by different spinneret structures. The retracting spinneret produces a thinner fiber with groove morphology due to the shorter straight jet length, larger envelope angle and higher whipping frequency. On the contrary, the protruding spinneret causes coarser and porous morphology fibers because of the longer straight jet length, smaller envelope angle, and lower whipping frequency. The jet motion has a tremendous influence on the fiber diameter and surface morphology; in addition, the internal structure of core–shell fiber is affected by the morphology of the Taylor cone.

Coaxial Electrospinning: Jet Motion, Core–Shell Fiber Morphology, and Structure as a Function of Material Parameters

Masha Li,Yuansheng Zheng,Binjie Xin,Yingqi Xu

Two core–shell-structured polystyrene/poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PS/PVP) and PVP/PS composite fibers were prepared via coaxial electrospinning in this study. Different concentrations of PVP solutions with a variety of viscosities and conductivities were adopted in the experiment. The influences of both viscosity and conductivity on the Taylor cone, jet motion, morphology, and internal structure of the resultant core–shell fiber were investigated in a comprehensive and systematic manner. As shown in the images of Taylor cone and jet motion, which were captured by a high-speed camera, different PVP concentrations in the core and shell would result in different core and shell thicknesses as well as distinct jet motion patterns including straight jet length, envelop angle, and frequency of whipping process, thus obtaining the core–shell fibers with different diameters. Not only jet motion and Taylor cone but also the polymer solution concentration and the role of PVP in core and shell have a tremendous influence on the morphology and the internal structure of the resultant core–shell fiber. Additionally, the formation mechanisms of PS/PVP and PVP/PS fibers were studied by means of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The experimental results provide a basis for further design and optimization of processing conditions, so as to control the nanostructure of core–shell composite fibers.

Continuous needleless electrospinning of magnetic nanofibers from magnetization-induced self-assembling PVA/ferrofluid cone array

Hongjian Wang,Bin Liu,Weilong Huang,Zi Lin,Jie Luo,Yan Li,Lin Zhuang,Wei Wang,Lelun Jiang

A novel approach, continuous needleless electrospinning from the tips of magnetization-induced self-assembling PVA/ferrofluid cone array, was proposed to prepare magnetic nanofibers. A PVA/ferrofluid was synthesized, the needleless electrospinning process was observed, and the morphology and magnetic properties of magnetic nanofibers were investigated. The results showed that the PVA/ferrofluid could remain stable and homogeneous for 21 days under the magnetic field gradient (2.2 mT/mm). “Taylor cone” array of PVA/ferrofluid was self-assembled under both the magnetic and electric fields. As the electric voltage reached 25 kV, the jets were emitted from the “Taylor cone” array, resulting in needleless electrospinning of magnetic nanofibers. Magnetic nanofibers were homogeneous and continuous with an average diameter of 73.6 nm. Magnetic nanofibers showed a good magnetic response property and relatively high saturated magnetization (1.71 emu/g), which is expected to be applied in the biomedical field.

Omni-adhesive fibers via Taylor-cone co-electrospinning towards cold-supply chain

Xi Liu,Xizi Wan,Lianxin Shi,Bing Dai,Man Yang,Xuetao Xu,Wuyi Xiao,Xiao He,Lei Jiang,Shutao Wang

Developing omni-adhesives is a great challenge for those oil/water wetted substrates because the interfacial liquid always restricts the contact area between adhesives and substrates. Herein, we report omni-adhesive fibers composed of oilborne core-fiber and waterborne semi-nanoshell via Taylor-cone co-electrospinning, realizing efficient adhesion on diverse liquid wetted substrates with cold tolerance. The oilborne core-fiber and waterborne semi-nanoshell enable the omni-adhesive fibers to adhere onto solid substrates wetted by diverse liquids, such as aqueous solutions with acid, base and salts, organic solvents and daily drinks, through a partial dissolving-wetting-adhering process. Further, the formed nano-adhesive layer of omni-adhesive fibers shows wide-range temperature tolerance from −196–60 ℃. As a proof-of-concept study, we demonstrate a temperature monitor based on omni-adhesive fibers can indicate the temperature fluctuation of cold-supply chain, such as vaccine transport. This study provides a feasible route to design omni-adhesives adaptive to complex liquid wetted substrates in large temperature fluctuations.

Tween-80 improves single/coaxial electrospinning of three-layered bioartificial blood vessel

Wu Chuang,Wang Haixiang,Cao Jin

Electrospinning is a promising technique for preparing bioartificial blood vessels. Nanofibers prepared by electrospinning can simulate the structure of extracellular matrix to promote cell adhesion and proliferation. However, thorn-like protrusions can appear as defects on electrospun scaffolds and coaxial electrospun nanofibers often have no clear core/shell structure, which can seriously affect the quality of bioartificial blood vessels. To address these problems, Tween 80 is added to the electrospinning solution, which results in a stable Taylor cone, eliminates the thorn-like protrusions on electrospun bioartificial blood vessels, and reduces interfacial effects due to different core/shell solutions during coaxial electrospinning. Simulations, biomechanical tests, and in vivo studies were performed. The results demonstrate the excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility of the bioartificial blood vessel. This research provides a useful reference for optimizing the electrospinning process for fabricating bioartificial blood vessels. Graphical Abstract

Preparation and Optimization of a Biomimetic Triple-Layered Vascular Scaffold Based on Coaxial Electrospinning

Hu Qingxi,Wu Chuang,Zhang Haiguang

Electrospinning is a promising method for preparing bionic vascular scaffolds. In particular, coaxial electrospinning can encapsulate polymer materials in biological materials and provide vascular scaffolds with good biomechanical properties. However, it is difficult to produce a stable Taylor cone during the coaxial electrospinning process. Moreover, glutaraldehyde cross-linked natural biomaterials are cytotoxic. To address these issues, a novel electrospinning process is proposed in this report. A non-ionic surfactant (Tween 80) was added to poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) electrospinning solution and gelatin-collagen electrospinning solution, which prevented the interfacial effect of coaxial electrospinning due to different core/shell solutions. The as-prepared materials were then cross-linked with the non-toxic coupling agents N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N′-ethylcarbodiimide/N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS). By comparing the biomechanical properties of EDC/NHS cross-linked vascular scaffold with glutaraldehyde vapor–cross-linked vascular scaffold, it was found that the fracture strain and biological performance of EDC/NHS cross-linked vascular scaffold were better than those of the glutaraldehyde cross-linked scaffold. Finally, a three-layer bionic vascular scaffold was prepared by the proposed electrospinning process. Biomechanical performance tests were carried out and the prepared scaffold was found to meet the requirements of tissue-engineered blood vessels. The research in this paper provides a useful reference for the preparation and optimization of vascular scaffolds.
