Polyacrylonitrile-Coated Onion-like Carbon Nanoparticles for Carbon Nanofibers with Enhanced Strength and Toughness

Ye Zhang,Bo Zhu,Xiaomin Yuan,Baoming Wang,Xun Cai,Junwei Yu,Na Sun,Chengsen Li,Xuechen Liang

Due to the typical strong and tough graphitic structures, carbon nanofibers (CNFs) theoretically have excellent mechanical properties. However, in practice, the defects and misalignments in these crystal domains always jeopardize the performance of CNFs and limit their further application. In this case, this paper takes onion-like carbon (OLC) as an effective nanofiller to optimize the fiber graphitic structure and produces composite CNFs with enhanced strength and toughness. For this purpose, the in situ polymerization technique is specially developed for the rapid and uniform distribution of OLC in the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursor of CNFs. The obtained PAN-coated OLC nanoparticles successfully avoid the agglomeration of nanofillers and can be further electrospun into OLC uniformly doped PAN nanofibers. Owing to the interaction between OLC and PAN matrix, the crystal domains in PAN precursor nanofibers are thicker and transformed from integrated shish-kebab structures into nanofibril crystals with better regularity and orientation. In the subsequent stabilization and carbonization processes, these crystalline nanofibrils are considered to be the structural basis for the formation of oriented and continuous graphitic domains in final CNFs. Meanwhile, the graphitic shells of OLC are confirmed to act as the template in the carbonization process to induce and promote the crystallization of the surrounding fiber matrix and transform the turbostratic structures in fiber crystal domains into more orderly graphitic structures with increased size and continuity. Furthermore, the embedded nanoscale OLC can co-move and continuously interact with the resulting graphitic domains during the deformation process for load transfer. As a result, the tensile strength and elongation at break of OLC-reinforced CNFs increase by 53.5 and 34.0%, respectively. The strong and tough composite CNFs may help to avoid the potential fiber breaking in their practical use and be further applied in wearable capacitors, masks, filters, etc.

Novel Carbon Nanoparticles Derived from Biodiesel Soot as Lubricant Additives

Chuan Li,Mingling Li,Xinyun Wang,Weimin Feng,Qiangqiang Zhang,Bo Wu,Xianguo Hu

The objective of this study was to investigate the roles and tribological mechanisms of onion-like carbon nanoparticles derived from biodiesel soot (BDS) when applied in water (H2O) and liquid paraffin (LP). In this study, we prepared nitric acid-treated BDS (NA-BDS) as an additive to H2O and NA-BDS modified with oleylamine (NA-BDS-OLA) as an additive to LP. Raman spectroscopy, field-emission transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and zeta potentiometry were used to characterize the results of the nitric acid treatment and oleylamine modification. The tribological behaviors and corresponding mechanisms of the new onion-like carbon nanoparticles were evaluated using a ball-on-disc reciprocating tribometer, as well as field-emission scanning electron microscopy, three-dimensional laser scanning microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The results indicated that the additives NA-BDS and NA-BDS-OLA, which were onion-like carbon nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 35 to 40 nm, enhanced the antiwear and friction reduction properties of H2O and LP, respectively. Through tribo-mechanisms, these types of soot can serve as spacers and ball bearings between the rubbing surfaces. Moreover, exfoliation under a high load as a result of the formation of a graphitic layer facilitates easy shearing. Keywords:biodiesel soot;carbon nanoparticles;onion-like;lubricant additive

Boron-doped onion-like carbon with enriched substitutional boron: the relationship between electronic properties and catalytic performance

Yangming Lin,Yansong Zhu,Bingsen Zhang,Yoong Ahm Kim,Morinobu Endo,Dang Sheng Su

Incorporating heteroatoms into onion-like carbon (OLC, average size ∼5 nm) with a fullerene-like structure and investigating its peculiar properties are fascinating challenges. Here, we present straightforward fabrication of doped OLC samples with a high concentration of boron (0.63–4.57 at%) via a high-temperature thermal diffusion method. The highest proportion of substitutional boron of the boron species reaches 29%, which far exceeds most of the reported boron-doped carbon materials. The influence of boron on the fullerene-like layers and electronic properties of OLC is systematically investigated using Raman spectroscopy with different excitation energies (1.58–3.8 eV) and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). The as-prepared boron-doped OLC samples exhibit a perfect four-electron process for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which is similar to commercial Pt/C. It is worth noting that the intrinsic relationship between the electronic properties and catalytic performance of doped samples is explored based on experimental studies instead of theoretical calculations. The results indicate that the lower work function, lower valence band edge and higher density of states (DOSs) of doped OLC are crucial to improve the catalytic performance. Our work can provide valuable information on the design of doped metal-free materials and give new evidence for enhanced ORR activity associated with heteroatom doping and electronic properties.

Uniform doping of onion-like carbon nanofillers in carbon nanofibers via functionalization and in-situ polymerization for improved fiber graphitic structure and mechanical properties

Ye Zhang,Bo Zhu,Xun Cai,Shengyao Zhao,Kun Qiao,Xiaomin Yuan,Junwei Yu,Na Sun,Chengsen Li,Xuechen Liang,Chaohong Liu

Carbonaceous nanofillers have been widely used as template additives to strengthen carbon nanofibers (CNFs), while their poor dispersion and insufficient interaction with fiber matrix often limit their optimization roles. Herein, this paper takes functionalized onion-like carbon (fOLC) as an improved nanofiller and provides a bottom-up solution to prepare fOLC-reinforced CNFs. The in-situ polymerization technique is developed to introduce fOLC in polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursors. Meanwhile, moderate functionalization of the nanofiller is applied to further promote their dispersion and interaction with PAN. On this bases, the nanoscale spherical fOLC can achieve uniform distribution in the fiber matrix without the trouble of shape control, thus having more comprehensive impacts on fiber structures. It is shown that the added fOLC can organize the PAN molecular chains into crystalline nanofibrils in as-spun nanofibers and further promote their graphitization through nucleating and templating effects during annealing. In this case, the dispersed fOLC not only increases nucleation sites to cause grain refinement, but these rigid nanoparticles with well-developed interaction with the fiber matrix can further impede crack propagation through dispersion strengthening. As a result, the tensile strength and elongation at break of CNFs simultaneously increase by up to 65.15 % and 41.25 %, respectively.

Bulk Amorphous Carbon with Lightweight, High Strength, and Electrical Conductivity: Onion-Like Carbon Structures Embedded in Disordered Graphene Networks

Meng Hu,Jiwei Pang,Yuan Tang,Mengdong Ma,Junwen Huang,Penghui Li,Lu Shi,Yan Zhong,Julong He,Jianning Ding

Amorphous carbon exhibits superior performance over its crystalline counterparts due to its unique structural configuration characterized by short-to-medium-range ordered and long-range disordered structure, which fundamentally expands its potential applications in advanced technological fields. The exploration and preparation of novel bulk amorphous carbon materials through innovative synthesis approaches remain crucial in materials research. Here, we successfully synthesized bulk amorphous carbons composed of onion-like carbon structures embedded in disordered graphene networks prepared via spark plasma sintering of carbon black at a pressure of 50 MPa and temperatures ranging from 1700 to 2200 °C. The bulk amorphous carbon demonstrates a unique combination of low density and exceptional mechanical and electrical properties. The sample synthesized at 2200 °C exhibits superior mechanical properties with nanoindentation hardness of 603 MPa, Young’s modulus of 6.78 GPa, compressive strength of 169 MPa, and flexural strength of 69 MPa, comparable to the commercial ISO-68 graphite from Toyo Tanso Co., Ltd. In addition, this bulk amorphous carbon exhibits excellent electrical conductivity, reaching 9.3 × 103 S/m at room temperature. This type of bulk amorphous carbon demonstrates particular promise for advanced applications in aerospace engineering, energy storage, electronic devices, and precision machinery manufacturing.

Wear pressure induced structural changes of OLC nanoparticles and their regulated lubrication performances by mixing with NDs and GO

Yijun Dai,Xiaohua Feng,Yi Liu,Yanxin Dan,Jing Huang,Hua Li

Here we report the tribological properties of nanosized onion-like carbon (OLC), OLC-nanodiamond (ND), and OLC-graphene oxide (GO) as additives in lubricant oil tested under different wear pressure. Under the wear pressure of 588 N of the four-ball testing, the 0.125 wt% addition OLC reduced the wear volume and the wear scar diameter by 36.29 % and 82.42 %. TEM characterization revealed structural changes in contour of the OLC particles after the wear testing. Pressure-induced agglomeration was seen for the OLC nanospheres, and the squeezed lattice changes resulted in formation of sp 3 diamond structure inside the spheres. These structural changes are directly related to the loading force. However, addition of the sp 3 NDs and sp 2 GO deteriorated the lubricating performances of the OLC-added lubricant oil.

Fabrication of Garlic Oil-Functionalized Onion-Like Carbon Nanoparticles as Effective Nanoadditives for Improved Lubricating Performance

Rui Zhang,Shenghua Xue,Yixin Wang,Shujuan Liu,Qian Ye,Feng Zhou

Herein, garlic oil-functionalized onion-like carbon (OLC) nanoparticles were successfully prepared through a multistep process involving the carbonization of candle ash followed by surface modification. Initially, the OLC was prepared by heat-treating candle ash under 450 °C and then grafting polyethylenimine (PEI) using epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) as a cross-linking agent. Subsequently, garlic oil was grafted onto PEI@OLC via the aza-Michael reaction with PEI, thereby obtaining garlic oil-functionalized OLC nanoparticles (GO@OLC). The GO@OLC exhibited enhanced lubrication properties as a lube additive, with a low coefficient of friction (COF) of 0.11 and a significant reduction of 76.57% in wear volume. The enhanced lubrication performance is credited to the rolling effect and surface repairing effect of the OLC nanoparticles as well as the formation of a complex protective layer by GO@OLC-induced tribochemical reactions.

Onion-like carbon nanoparticles as additives in lubricant oil deform inelastically during the wear testing for improved lubrication performances

Yijun Dai,Xiaohua Feng,Yi Liu,Jing Huang,Shuangjie Wu,Ping Zhou,Hua Li

Nano-carbon has been extensively investigated as an additive to lubricant oil for improved performance. It is still far from a final verdict as to how the physicochemical features of the carbon nanomaterials affect their lubrication efficacy. Here we report the use of onion-like carbon (OLC) particles with the size of 5–10 nm as additives to lubricant oil, and their role in regulating the lubrication is elucidated through characterizing the wear-induced changes to their physiochemistry. Multiple loads are chosen for the wear testing using the four-ball friction tester. Stable dispersion of the OLC particles in lubricant oil was attained by pre-coating the particles with oleic acid molecules. Results showed that the oil with the treated OLC particles of 0.125 wt% reduced the wear scar by 30 % in diameter and the wear volume by 77 %. It was surprisingly noted that incorporation of the OLC nanoparticles particularly alleviated the heavy loading wear by remarkably reducing the friction coefficient . Raman spectroscopy characterization suggested intact chemistry of the particles after the wear testing. However, curvature changes of the particles were seen as revealed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy after the wear testing, indicating inelastic deformation of the particles triggered by the wear-squeezing.

Controllable preparation of boron nitride microspheres and their epoxy-based thermoconductive composites

Chaoze Liu,Zheng Zhou,Jiawei Ji,Yaxin Gu,Song Yan,Shaobo Yang,Rongjuan Zhang,Zhenya Liu,Yanming Xue,Chengchun Tang

How to prepare spherical boron nitride (BN) particle with different size is an extremely challenging work. In this paper, the controllable preparation of spherical BN particle from nanospheres to microsphere was realized by changing the synthesis temperature of trimethyl borate (B(OMe) 3 ) and ammonia. The spherical precursor (SP) with high oxygen content was obtained first, and then it was heated under flowing ammonia atmosphere to form stable boron nitride microspheres (BNMS). The BNMS exhibits onion-like cavitation structure with a diameter of 0.8–3.4 μm. The effects of the lower reaction temperature (700–825 °C) and gas flow rate on the spherical precursor are discussed. A possible mechanism is proposed to explain the formation of precursors and the appearance of onion-like structure. It is believed that the formation of microsphere is due to the deposition and growth of BO species during the flow process of nanosphere. In addition, the effect of the addition of BNMS on the thermal conductivity of epoxy resin (EP) composites was investigated.

Investigate on preparation and dry tribological behaviors of onion-like carbon/MoS2 polyimide coatings

XingPeng Fei,Shusheng Liu,Ayush Subedi,Xinkai Ding,Enzhu Hu,Kunhong Hu

The development of biomass materials can effectively mitigate the scarcity of energy and minimize resource waste. In this work, onion-like biomass carbon nanoparticles (OLCs) were prepared using rice husk ash (RHA) which was subjected to a high-temperature graphitization reaction catalyzed by iron nitrate. OLCs/molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) composite particles were prepared and incorporated into polyimide (PI), and a composite coating of OLCs/MoS 2 /PI with excellent tribological properties was successfully prepared. The tribological properties of coatings were evaluated using a controlled atmosphere tribometer (WMT-2E) under dry friction conditions. The related friction and wear mechanism of PI coatings including particles was clarified by the SEM/EDS, XPS, HRTEM and DFT theory. Results show that the wear rate of the three composite coatings of polyimide with OLC, MoS 2 , and OLC/MoS 2 particles were reduced by 52.9 %, 48.2 %, and 58.1 %, respectively. For the coefficient of friction, PI-0.20 OLC/MoS 2 coating material decreased by 16.1 %. Anti-wear and friction reduction mechanism is attributed to the presence of a transfer film on the surface of the steel balls. The addition of MoS 2 facilitated the deposition of nanoparticles, which further improved the stability and densification of the friction film, resulting in better protection of the metal surface against severe wear. Besides, the component structure changes of OLCs and MoS 2 and adsorption energy of friction products on the surface of tribo-pairs were also important reasons for clarifying the modification tribological behavior of PI coatings including three kinds of nanoparticles.

One-pot synthesis of nitrogen and sulfur co-doped onion-like mesoporous carbon vesicle as an efficient metal-free catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline solution

Ce Han,Xiangjie Bo,Yufan Zhang,Mian Li,Liping Guo

Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped onion-like mesoporous carbon vesicle (NS-MCV) with multilayer lamellar structure is synthesized as a metal-free catalyst through a convenient and economical procedure. The synthesized materials are systematically characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectra , nitrogen adsorption–desorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The characterization results demonstrate that N and S atoms can be successfully doped into the framework of MCV with little impact on the morphology and structure. The NS-MCV manifests a remarkably high electrocatalytic activity as a metal-free electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with mainly a four-electron transfer pathway. Moreover, in contrast to the commercially available Pt/C catalyst, the NS-MCV shows much better long-term stability and tolerance toward methanol crossover in an alkaline medium . Such excellent performances can be mainly attributed to the synergistic effect arising from the addition of N and S heteroatom , optimized S content and high surface area. The NS-MCV with a simple synthesis method may further exploited as potentially efficient and inexpensive metal-free ORR catalyst materials.

Facile Synthesis of FeP-Decorated Heteroatomic-Doped Onion-like Carbon Nanospheres for Pseudocapacitance Enhanced Sodium Storage

Hafiz Muhammad Saleem,Mahmood Jamil,Mohammad Tabish,Asif Hussain Khoja,Ang Li,Dengke Wang,Huaihe Song

Transition-metal phosphides (TMPs), such as iron phosphide (FeP), are currently being contemplated as favorable high-performance anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) because of their high theoretical capacity, cost-effectiveness, and availability. However, the inadequate electrochemical reaction dynamics and abrupt volumetric expansion of TMPs during cycling related to inferior conductivity constrain their commercial applications. Herein, we synthesized N,P-codoped onion-like carbon (NP-OLC)-encapsulated FeP (FeP@NP-OLC) using a simple injection pyrolysis method, followed by a successive low-temperature phosphidation treatment. NP-OLC, apart from constraining the volume variation of FeP, also encourages electron transfer to enhance the reversibility of FeP@C during the repeated cycling processes. Advancing from the distinctive onion-like structure, the FeP@NP-OLC nanospheres demonstrate outstanding sodium storage capability in terms of high capacity (543 mAh g–1 at 0.5 A g–1 at over 500 cycles), superb rate capacity (544 mAh g–1 at 2 A g–1), and long cyclic life (560 mAh g–1 at 1 A g–1 over 1100 cycles). The exceptional electrochemical performance is correlated to the meaningful involvement of pseudocapacitive behavior through the charge–discharge procedure, specifically at a high rate. Experimental results and theoretical calculations showed that the FeP and carbon interface with a defect can improve charge transfer and strengthen collaboration regarding active nanoparticles and sodium atoms, thereby boosting sodium storage. This facile strategy can be used to prepare other onion-like carbon-coated TMPs for future energy storage of commercial SIBs.
