A Novel Natural Dye Derivative for Natural Fabric Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Dyeing Technology

Wu Jinsong,Zhao Hongjuan,Wang Mingyue,Zhi Weiru,Xiong Xiaoqing,Zheng Laijiu

The supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO 2 ) dyeing technology is a green dyeing technology, and the usage of natural dye makes SC-CO 2 dyeing technology safer and more environment-friendly. Nevertheless, after using natural dye in SC-CO 2 dyeing, the color depth and fastness of dyed natural fabric are poor. In this study, alkyl and hydroxyalkyl groups were grafted onto alizarin, which is a natural dye, to elevate the color depths and fastness of alizarin-derivative-dyed natural fabric. The results demonstrate that the color depths of alkyl-alizarin-dyed and hydroxyalkyl-alizarin-dyed natural fabrics were increased. This has to do with the increase in the solubilities of alkyl alizarin and hydroxyalkyl alizarin in SC-CO 2 . The hydroxybutyl-alizarin-dyed wool displayed the best color depth (K/S value: 6.44). And the hydroxyalkyl-alizarin-dyed natural fabric showed good washing fastness and rubbing fastness (about 4–5 level), because that hydroxyalkyl alizarin could be linked by a covalent bond to the natural fabric.

Diversity-oriented synthesis of azo disperse dyes with improved fastness properties via employing Ugi four-component reaction

Huanhuan Li,Hong-Fei Qian,Gaofeng Feng

A novel approach has been established for accessing structurally diverse azo disperse dyes with improved fastness properties by employing an Ugi four-component reaction (Ugi-4CR). The process includes three steps: (1) Ugi-4CR of aniline, cyclohexyl isocyanide, formic acid , and an aromatic aldehyde; (2) selective hydrolysis of amide functionality in the Ugi product; and (3) coupling the hydrolysis product with an aryl diazonium salt. Employing Ugi-4CR herein had advantages over easily controlling the molecular weight/size of the dye. Six new azo disperse dyes were synthesized and their structures were fully characterized by 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, MS, and FT-IR. It was found that the washing and sublimation fastness properties of the obtained azo disperse dyes on both poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and nylon fibers were remarkably improved as compared with conventional C.I. Disperse Orange 3. The improved fastness properties should be attributed to the moderately increased molecular weight/size and the amide functionality introduced in Ugi-4CR.

Fabrication and performance evaluation of hydrophobic flame-retardant coatings on polyester substrates via phytic acid and siloxane

Wei Li,Tianyu Ruan,Yingting Yin,Jinbo Yao,Xuemin Hu

With the increasing demand for safety and practical performance in textiles, the development of polyester fabrics combining flame retardancy and hydrophobic properties has become an inevitable requirement for industry advancement. This study employed an in-situ cross-linking composite process for dual-functional flame-retardant and hydrophobic coatings. A flame-retardant base coating was constructed on polyester surfaces via blending and crosslinking of phytate‑zinc and siloxane-modified waterborne polyurethane. Subsequently, the flame-retardant layer catalyzed the hydrolysis and condensation of hexadecyltrimethoxysilane on the fabric surface, thereby forming a hydrophobic coating and yielding a polyester material with both hydrophobic and flame-retardant properties. The limiting oxygen index of the modified polyester fabric increased from 19.5 % to 27.2 %. It couldn't be ignited in combustion tests and exhibited no melting droplets. In the cone calorimeter test, the peak heat release rate (PHRR), total heat release (THR), and total smoke release (TSP) decreased by 43 %, 37.8 %, and 35.3 %, respectively. Moreover, the modified polyester fabric exhibited a static water contact angle of up to 149.4°, demonstrating self-cleaning ability, abrasion resistance, and washing durability. This work provides a facile and accessible strategy for the preparation of multifunctional textiles.

Synthesis, characterization, and application of diester/diurethane tethered azo disperse dyes: A new strategy to improve dye's fastness properties

Gaofeng Feng,Hong-Fei Qian,Gang Bai,Yan-Chun Liu,Ling-Ling Hu

A series of new kinds of diester/diurethane tethered azo disperse dyes were synthesized through the reaction between the hydroxyl group in disperse dyes, such as C. I. Disperse Red 1 ( 1a ), C. I. Disperse Red 13 ( 1b ), and C. I. Disperse Blue 106 ( 1c ), and terephthaloyl chloride or p -phenylene diisocyanate . Structures of these new dyes were fully characterized with NMR, MS, and FT-IR. Visible absorption measurement in DMF indicated that all new diester/diurethane tethered dyes exhibited a little shorter maximum absorption wavelength and much higher molar extinction coefficient than their prototypes. Moreover, the fastnesses to wash and sublimation of dyeing on polyurethane fibre were dramatically improved due to the dye's moderately increased molecular size. It is an attractive new strategy to synthesize a library of tethered dyes with improved fastness properties using various different tethering agents or disperse dyes.

Green penetration dyeing of wool yarn with natural dye mixtures in D5 medium

Yingjie Cai,Lexin Xiao,Mohammad Nazmul Ehsan,Tiancheng Jiang,Md Nahid Pervez,Lina Lin,Xiaorong Xiong,Vincenzo Naddeo

This investigation reported a mixture of natural dyes by employing the D5 solvent as a green penetration dyeing system for wool fiber. The ideal dyeing conditions were determined by conducting an in-depth analysis of the following variables: AEO-3 concentration, aqueous pick-up rate, solution pH, dyeing time, temperature, dye mass, and dye fixation percentage. Tensile strength and elongation were measured to learn more about the mechanical characteristics of the wool yarn after it was dyed in D5 solvent and water. The suggested dyeing parameters for wool yarn are 2% of AEO-3, 400% of the wool aqueous pick-up rate at pH 3, 90 °C temperature, and 90-min duration. This was determined by calculating the K/S value and the dye fixing rate. A washfastness of 4–5 on the fading scale and a stainfastness of 5 across the board were acquired. MR and GB dyes obtained a high dye fixation rate within 90–100%; however, GY dye achieved about 50% dye fixation rate. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) verified that the original and dyed wool fiber showed no change in interplanar distance in crystallinity and stable thermal tendency due to the dyeing process. The morphology of the wool's surface was not altered throughout the dyeing process, and the colors were spread uniformly over the fiber in SEM pictures and cross-sections. Finally, natural dyes in a D5 solvent media may be used to produce a ternary color, laying the groundwork for natural dyes to be further industrialized.

Multifunctional modification of bio–based polyamide 56 fabric via luteolin for durable colouristic, antioxidant, antibacterial and UV protective properties

Xue Zhang,Miaoyan Li,Xin Zhang,Xueni Hou,Xiangrong Wang

Natural extracts, characterized by their superior biocompatibility and multifunctionality, have demonstrated remarkable potential in fields such as antibacterial, antioxidant and ultraviolet (UV) protection. However, at present, natural extracts are facing a key bottleneck in functional finishing—poor washing durability. In this study, luteolin, a natural extract, was chosen to treat bio-based Polyamide 56 (PA56) fabrics. The findings indicated that the fabric dyed with luteolin not only achieved good coloration but also exhibited outstanding multi-functional properties: the ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) value reached 205, the ABTS radical cation (ABTS •+ ) scavenging rate was 99 %, and the antibacterial rates against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) were 70 % and 95 %, respectively. To further enhance the color fastness and functional durability, this study introduced metal ions. Through the coordination reaction between luteolin, metal ions and PA56, the color fastness was successfully raised to level 4 or above, and the durability of functionalities was significantly improved. After 10 washing cycles, the UPF value of the fabric remained at 155, the ABTS •+ scavenging rate exceeded 60 %, and the antibacterial rate against S. aureus remained at 75 %. This study proposed and verified a sustainable and coordinated strategy based on coordination chemistry, systematically addressing the durability issue of natural functional finishing agents.

Dyeing of cotton fabric with reactive disperse dye contain acyl fluoride group in supercritical carbon dioxide

Da-fa Yang,Xiang-jun Kong,Dan Gao,Hong-sheng Cui,Ting-ting Huang,Jin-xin Lin

Reactive disperse dyes with mono- and bi-acyl fluoride reactive groups have been synthesized using a simple and convenient method. The structures of these dyes have been defined by 1 H, 13 C and 19 F NMR. The cotton dyeing in supercritical carbon dioxide (Sc CO 2 ) with dyeing temperature varying from 60 °C to 120 °C and time between 1 h and 3 h and with the concentration of 0.5% owf (on weight of fabric) have been studied. Significant improvement of the color fastness of washing and rubbing has been observed owing to the covalent bond formed between the reactive group of dyes and the functional group of cotton fibers . Besides, the dyed fabrics possess favorable fastness properties , indicating the achievement of lower-temperature dyeing of cotton in Sc CO 2 . Additionally, the end products meet the garment dyeing standards as well. A mechanism of dyeing process is tentatively speculated meanwhile.

Synthesis and application of comb-like waterborne polyurethane as a dispersant for disperse dyes

Yufa Sun,Zilin Zhong,Kaijun Feng,Qi Meng,Bofeng Pan,Xiangdong Zhou

Disperse dyes are hardly soluble in water and are usually milled with large numbers of dispersants in the dye industry. A branched waterborne polyurethane (WPU) as a dispersant with different side chain lengths (WPU350, WPU550 and WPU750) was synthesized through an acetone process. The effects of the side chain length on the stability and dispersibility of disperse dyes were particularly discussed and analyzed. The results showed that due to their special comb-like structures, these WPUs were able to achieve good dispersive ability for disperse dyes and WPU550 had the best dispersibility through steric hindrance and electrostatic repulsion on the surface of dyes. In addition, WPU was further employed to prepare the dispersion to dye the polyester fabric. These dispersions with WPU not only demonstrated an improved K/S value, wet and dry rubbing fastness and soaping fastness but also had better dispersing and dyeing performance than commercial dispersants.

Dyeing properties of natural Gardenia on the lyocell fabric pretreated with tannic acid

Ke Guizhen,Mulla Mujammil Salim,Peng Feifan,Chen Shuhui

With the enhancement of awareness of environmental protection, the green natural dyes gradually come into people’s view again. This subject studied the dyeing performance of natural dye Gardenia on tannic acid modified lyocell fabric. The effect of tannic acid concentration, pH of dyeing solution, dyeing time and dyeing temperature on k/s value and colorimetric data (L*, a*, b*, c*) of the dyed lyocell fabric was investigated. The results showed the color strength and yellowness value increased with the increase in dyeing time (within 60 min), dyeing temperature and tannic acid concentration and the decrease in pH value of dye bath. The dyeing process was optimized by response surface analysis. The experimental results showed that the linear effects of dyeing pH, dyeing temperature and tannic acid concentration on the K/S values of the dyed lyocell fabrics were extremely significant. The results of X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy scanning, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and water contact angle measurements showed that the morphological structure of the tannic acid-treated dyed lyocell fabrics did not change. The results of practical validation and optimization showed that the optimal process of tannic acid pre-mordanting natural dyes Gardenia dyed lyocell fabric was: dyeing time 60 min, dyeing pH = 3.5, dyeing temperature 90 °C, and the measured K/S value of the dyed specimen under this condition was 7.45. Its color fastness to washing and rubbing was above 3. The successful combination of bio-mordant tannic acid and natural dye Gardenia yellow on lyocell fabric provided a green dyeing method for lyocell fiber.
