Engineering commercial activated carbon with carbonyl site for activation of peroxymonosulfate and degradation of tetracycline

Xingyu Zhan,Zhilong Zhang,Jingcai Xu,Zejie Zhu,Xinqing Wang,Bo Hong,Yingchun Xia,Yunxiong Zeng

Reduction of antibiotics in water by active of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) using low-cost metal-free activated carbon (AC) is an effective route to a better future. Herein, we report a new activated carbon (AC-12) by incorporating carbonyl (C O) into commercial AC to efficiently activate PMS and degrade tetracycline (TC). The AC-12/PMS system degrades 97.6 % of TC within 10 min, superior to sole AC (39 %), PMS (11.5 %), and AC/PMS system (61.1 %), respectively. The pseudo-first-order kinetic constant of AC-12/PMS is 0.372 min −1 , 4.27-fold higher than AC/PMS. Furthermore, AC-12/PMS exhibits outstanding performance in TC degradation across various environmental factors (e.g., water bodies, pH, ions, and organics). Capture tests and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy indicate that TC degradation over AC-12/PMS predominantly involves synergistic interactions between superoxide radicals ( O 2 − ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), contributing nearly 100 % to TC removal. Additionally, high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) elucidates potential degradation pathways and by-products. This study underscores the utility of AC-12 with carbonyl sites as an exemplary metal-free catalyst for PMS activation, highlighting its advantages of cost-effectiveness, facile regeneration, environmental friendliness, and excellent stability.

Enhanced electrochemical oxidation and machine learning-assisted sensing of tetrabromobisphenol A using activated carbon facilitated CoWO4 heterostructures

Sana Jawaid,Bharat Prasad Sharma,Sadam Hussain Tumrani,Zaheer Abbas,Razium Ali Soomro,Selcan Karakuş,Tarık Küçükdeniz,Ayman Nafady

The escalating levels of environmental pollution, particularly from commercially used products, highlight the imperative of efficient sensor technologies to facilitate timely and effective remediation strategies. Herein, a simple method is proposed to enhance the electrochemical performance of CoWO 4 structures by coupling them with activated carbon (AC) for direct tetrabromobisphenol A (TBPA) oxidation. The systematic comparison shows that incorporation of AC with CoWO 4 not only improves the overall effective surface area (ESA) of the catalyst by 1.8-fold but also improves the cyclic voltammetry (CV) based irreversible oxidation current by 2.0-fold owing to improved conductivity and surface characteristics. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) based optimization of the sensory characteristics confirmed robust electrocatalytic TBPA oxidation within a 0.1 to 1.0 µM concentration range, achieving a 0.024 µM detection limit within PBS (0.1 M) (pH 5.0). Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) analysis confirms the non-covalent interaction favorability between TBPA and CoWO 4 surface, validating TBPA’s easy adsorption onto the catalytic surface and, thus, facilitated electron mobility between the molecule and the catalyst during the surface oxidation process. The DPV sensing interpreted using machine learning (ML) algorithms confirmed the detection accuracy of the developed sensor. Among the adopted models, artificial neural networks (ANN) achieved the highest R2 score (0.9659) and the lowest values across Mean Squared Error (MSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), and Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) error matrices confirming its suitability in deciphering DPV correlations. Integrating ANN with DPV based electrocatalytic oxidation sensing underscores machine learning’s potential in analyzing complex electrochemical signatures, thus advancing intelligent sensing for precise environmental monitoring.

Highly dispersed palladium supported on sulfuric acid-modified activated carbon for efficient dehydrogenation to produce novel aromatic monomer

Yi Wang,Xiaolin Luo,Rui Lu,Fang Lu

Herein, a sustainable route to novel aromatic monomer, dimethyl 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1,4-methanonaphthalene-5,8-dicarboxylate, was developed, in which dimethyl muconate and norbornene used as the diene and dienophile undergo Diels-Alder reaction followed by dehydrogenation. The polycyclic cycloadduct, octahydro-1,4-methanonaphthalene-5,8-dicarboxylate, could be synthesized without catalyst. The activated carbon modified with sulfuric acid generated more oxygen-containing groups, stronger acidity and more acidic sites. Highly dispersed palladium metal particles with an average particle size of about 1.0 nm exhibited excellent activity in the dehydrogenation reaction and the yield of target product reached 73.8 %.

Influence of pre-oxidization on the characterizations of coal gasification fine slag-derived activated carbons for CO2 capture

Zekai Miao,Guofeng Qiu,Xu Zhao,Fanhui Guo,Yixin Zhang,Jianjun Wu

Coal gasification fine slag (FS)-based activated carbons (ACs) for CO 2 capture provided a new method to realize the value-added utilization of FS. Furthermore, pre-oxidation treatment of carbonaceous materials is one of the most efficient possibilities to obtain developed pore structure of activated carbons to enhance the CO 2 adsorption capacity. In this study, four types of oxidizing agents (HNO 3 , NaClO, H 2 O 2 , and air) carefully modified the coal gasification fine slag residual carbon (RC) to fix the oxygen content at about 12 wt%, 15 wt%, and 18 wt%. The samples were characterized by XPS, volumetric sorption analyzer, SEM, Raman spectroscopy, TEM, TG, and TG MS. Results suggested that the specific surface area and total pore volume of the ACs were observed to increase after oxidation. The types of oxygen-containing groups also affected the pore structure of the ACs. The results showed that the content of O C O groups were the most predominant factors for high surface area, and the C O group could hinder the development of pore structure. The ACs facilitated by RC oxidation by HNO 3 had a high CO 2 storage capacity of 12.4 % at 30 °C and a fast adsorption rate, around 86 % of CO 2 uptake occurring in a span of 1 min.

Structural evolution of activated carbon supported nano-zero-valent iron and performance impacts on Pb(II) removal from aqueous solution

Xuejiao Liu,Beibei Pan,Zhiwei Li,Poonnawit Hanphaiboon,Yin Wang

Activated carbon supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI/AC) has been proved to be versatile for removing several kinds of contaminants from environmental matrix. The structural properties of NZVI/AC composites play a crucial role in determining both the decontamination efficiency and adsorption capacity of these materials. However, studies relevant to structural evolution and corresponding manipulation routes for AC-supported NZVI are still scarce. Herein, AC-supported NZVI were prepared under different synthesis conditions followed by characterizing them using several techniques and evaluating their reactivity toward heavy metal in aqueous solution. NZVI/AC synthesized under different molecular weight of PEG and m AC :m Fe possessed a similar removal efficiencies of Pb(II) from aqueous solution, meanwhile, NZVI/AC synthesized with a suitably prolonged time at n BH4 :n Fe = 8.0 exhibited obvious enhancement for Pb(II) removal from aqueous solution. As for structural evolution of AC-supported NZVI, results show that the crystallization was more complete, the shape was converted from needle to sphere, the particle size was becoming smaller, the particle distribution was more homogeneous, the specific surface area was smaller, and the surface oxidation was lower as suitably increasing m AC :m Fe , n BH4 :n Fe , and reaction time. The size and density of iron precursor by complexation of PEG and Fe 2+ , and ratio of nuclei formation to growth values are essentially responsible for manipulating structure of AC-supported NZVI. Spherical AC-supported NZVI with higher iron content based on smaller particle size, uniform distribution, and lower surface oxidation in one is responsible for significant enhancement of Pb(II) removal rate and capacity thanks to higher surface reactivity, more accessible surface-active sites, and faster electron transfer from core to shell of iron. This study would provide a new insight into comprehending manipulation mechanism for the key structure of AC-supported NZVI composites for aquatic remediation.

Alkali pretreatment-assisted catalytic pyrolysis of waste cellulose acetate for selective preparation of levoglucosenone

Shi-Yu Feng,Sheng Li,Wan-Zhao Huang,Qi Niu,Deng-Yu Chen,Zhi-Mo Fang,Li-Juan Gao,Kai Li,Qiang Lu

With the increasing demand for cellulose acetate (CA) in industrial and daily applications, the disposal of its waste has emerged as an environmental concern. In this study, a novel and sustainable method for value-added utilization of waste CA was proposed, which involved NaOH pretreatment and subsequent catalytic pyrolysis using phosphoric acid-activated carbon (PAC) to prepare levoglucosone (LGO). The effects of pretreatment temperatures and NaOH concentrations on the physicochemical characteristics of CA were thoroughly investigated. Furthermore, the pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) experiments were conducted to methodically assess the impacts of both pretreatment and pyrolysis conditions on the production of LGO. The results indicated that NaOH pretreatment could effectively hydrolyze the ester bonds in CA, leading to the removal of acetyl groups and a decrease in thermal stability. At a pretreatment temperature of 40 °C, a NaOH concentration of 0.5 mol/L, a catalyst/sample ratio of 1/3, and a pyrolysis temperature of 400 °C, the LGO yield could reach 11.52 wt%, much higher than that obtained from catalytic pyrolysis of CA (2.70 wt%). This study provides an efficient method for treating waste CA and demonstrates its potential for conversion into high-value chemicals, laying a solid foundation for the green recycling of waste plastics.

Proton conduction induced weak negative permittivity and low frequency dispersion in activated carbon felt-polyaniline metacomposites

Jingyu Bi,Benli Du,Zihao Guo,Zhihao Sun,Guangshen Li,Jianshu Wang,Ying Sha,Lei Qian

High negative permittivity of most metacomposites has significant limitations for various applications, so design of novel metacomposites with weakly negative dielectric constants still is a critical challenge. In this work, activated carbon felt-polyaniline (ACF-PANI) metacomposites with high compressibility have been prepared through in-situ polymerization of PANI on ACF, and the effect of PANI polymerization on the dielectric properties of the ACF-PANI metacomposites has been investigated. Adjusting the in-situ polymerization time can precisely control the loading of PANI on ACF, thereby achieving controllable negative permittivity. By optimizing the polymerization time to 240 min, we have successfully achieved a weak negative permittivity of approximately −30 from 50 kHz to 1 MHz, and the dispersion of ACF-PANI 240 is only 26. This is attributed to the unique protonic conduction of PANI, which dilutes the carrier concentration in the metacomposite material and enhances the carrier mass, thereby suppressing plasma the oscillations. Moreover, the negative permittivity of the compressible ACF-PANI metacomposites could be dynamically tuned based on its deformation, and the change in negative permittivity (Δε’/ε’) exhibits a clear linear correlation with the strain. This work provides a novel approach for the fabrication of low frequency dispersion and weak negative permittivity metacomposites.

Sustainable production of activated carbon spheres from ethyl cellulose

Peipei Sun,Kaitao Zhang,Shibin Shang,Jie Song,Dan Wang

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is an effective and sustainable way to covert biomass into functional carbonaceous materials. Effects of condition parameters on the morphology and particle size distributions were evaluated. However, the absence of porosity of HTC materials limits their wide applications. Activation of HTC materials could solve this problem. Traditional activation methods, which use strong base or acid as activating agent, could lead to pollutions. Here, we prepared microporous activated carbon spheres from ethyl cellulose under static air atmosphere. The resultant activated carbon spheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), FT-IR spectrometer, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and nitrogen adsorption. Results reveal that the obtained carbon spheres show smooth surface, good dispersion and abundant surface functional groups. In addition, the spherical carbon exhibits high adsorption abilities for different kinds of dyes, which is important for environment protection.

Improvement of electrochemical water softening treatment using activated carbon plates in high hardness and low alkalinity water: Enhancing the electrochemical treatment effect while reducing the corrosiveness of the water

Junwei Wang,Xuhui Wang,Dengjia Yuan,Min Xu,Ziyu Yan,Honghua Ge

The electrochemical water softening technique has the advantages of environmental friendliness, energy saving, and no secondary pollution. However, the easy scaling on the cathode surface affects its hardness removal efficiency, especially for slag-flushing water with high hardness and low alkalinity. In addition, the impact of electrochemically softened water on metal corrosion behavior is unclear and poses potential safety hazards. In this study, a novel electrochemical water softening reactor with a barrier layer structure was designed. By increasing the pH value of the water solution in the cathode region, the precipitation reaction was transferred from the cathode surface to the solution and barrier layer surfaces. The strong oxidizing substances generated by the anodic reaction were adsorbed through the barrier layer, thereby inhibiting their corrosive effect on carbon steel. Compared with the common electrochemical water softening reactor, the improved reactor has increased the pH in the cathode region from 8.58 to 12, increased the hardness removal efficiency from 5.8 % to 53.6 %, and reduced the corrosion rate of carbon steel from 0.396 mm/a to 0.254 mm/a. The significant increase in pH accelerated the rate of precipitation reactions in solution, increased the particle size of the precipitate, and caused rapid settling of the precipitate particles. The average settling rate of precipitated particles was 0.331 mg/s, much higher than the 0.017 mg/s before the improvement. Meanwhile, the strong oxidizing ions of ClO - were effectively adsorbed by the activated carbon plate, which in turn slowed down the corrosion of carbon steel by electrochemical water softening.

Removal of PFOA from water by activated carbon adsorption: Influence of pore structure

Zhiyuan Liu,Fan Yang,Tingting Zhai,Jianwei Yu,Chunmiao Wang,Zhengang Liu,Zhixue Liu,Yingxin Gao,Min Yang

Activated carbon (AC) adsorption is a practical process for the removal of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in aquatic environments, but the relationship between its pore structure and adsorption performance is not well understood. In this study, the KOH-activated carbons (KACs) with different tailored pore structures were prepared, and presented a 2.61-fold higher adsorption capacity and a 2.21-fold higher adsorption rate than the raw AC. An in situ characterization method and a modified adsorption model were introduced to investigate the impact of pore size, which demonstrated that the ultra-micropores (<1.2 nm) and small mesopores (2.0–3.0 nm) contributed significantly to the adsorption of PFOA, with the highest mean contribution factor ( k ) of 0.45 and the second highest of 0.39, respectively. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that PFOA molecules tend to attach to the pore walls at various pore sizes. The adsorption of PFOA in the ultra-micropores was dominated by enhanced interactions due to the overlapping potentials of the bilateral pore walls (maximum of −567.32 Kcal·mol −1 ) and hydrophobic interactions. PFOA micelles or hemi-micelles could be formed in the small mesopores, allowing them to function as both the molecule transportation channels and strong adsorption sites. This study would guide the development of activated carbon tailored for the selective adsorption of PFOA from water.

Structure-Performance Evolution of Cobalt-Ammonia Activated Carbon Catalyst for Ethylene Oligomerization

Zhu Kehui,An Yunlei,Yu Fei,Liu Li,Zhong Liangshu

The structure-performance evolution of Co/N-AC catalyst during ethylene oligomerization was investigated in detail. It was found that the catalytic activity sharply decreased in the first 30 h with the ethylene conversion decreasing from 64 to 4%. Butene selectivity increased gradually in the first 10 h then remained about 74%, while the selectivity for hexene and octene exhibited an opposite trend. The ratio of α-olefin to isomers for butene increased greatly with time on stream and most of the generated butene was 1-butene. Based on the structure characterization at different reaction stages, CoO x was suggested to be major active phase and the coverage of long-chain hydrocarbons as well as the loss of surface CoO x active sites due to size growth of Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles were the main reasons for catalytic deactivation. Graphic Abstract The structure-performance evolution of Co/N-AC catalyst during ethylene oligomerization was investigated and the coverage of long-chain hydrocarbons as well as the loss of surface CoO x active sites due to size growth of Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles were the main reasons for catalytic deactivation

Effect of the Co(II)@AC catalyst with the activated carbon modified by zinc chloride as a carrier on the synthesis of 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-1H-pyrazol-3-ol from the oxidation of 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-pyrazolidin-3-one by oxygen

Yu-cheng Jiang,Bao-guang Zhu,Xiang-li Long

The oxidation of 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-pyrazolidin-3-one to 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-1H- pyrazol-3-ol by air can be accelerated by the Co(II)@AC catalyst prepared by loading Co(II) on activated carbon with wet impregnation method. ZnCl 2 solution has been used to treat activated carbon to ameliorate the catalytic ability of Co(II)@AC catalyst. The experiments indicate that the optimal catalyst is made by immersing activated carbon in 0.7 mol/L ZnCl 2 solution at 50°C for 6 h with a liquid/solid ratio of 30/1 (mL/g) followed being calcined at 700°C for 5 h at a heating rate of 5°C/min under N 2 protection. The 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-1H-pyrazol-3-ol concentration catalyzed by the catalyst loaded on the best carbon reaches 0.01953 kg/L, which is 27.56% higher than that catalyzed by the catalyst loaded on the original carbon. The characterization results manifest that the modification with ZnCl 2 enriches the porous structure and increases the acidic groups on the surface of activated carbon. The conversion of 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-pyrazolidin-3-one is mainly determined by the physical structure of the activated carbon while the selectivity to 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-1H- pyrazol-3-ol is largely affected by the chemical characteristics of the activated carbon.
