The structural variances of adsorbents play a crucial role in determining the number of effective adsorption sites and pretreatment performance. However, there is still a gap in comprehending the impact of different carbon structural adsorbents on membrane fouling . Therefore, this study aimed to compare the efficacy of granular activated carbon (GAC), powdered activated carbon (PAC), and activated carbon fiber (ACF) in mitigating membrane fouling during municipal sewage reclamation using an aerobic granular sludge membrane bioreactor (AGMBR). The results demonstrated that the utilization of PAC significantly enhanced the normalized flux and reduced fouling resistance in comparison to GAC and ACF systems. PAC effectively adsorbed low and medium-molecular-weight pollutants present in raw sewage, resulting in an increase in average particle size and a decrease in foulant content on the membrane surface. The Hermia model indicated that adsorption pretreatment minimized standard blocking while promoting the formation of a sparse and porous cake layer. Moreover, according to the extended Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek theory, PAC has been demonstrated as the optimal antifouling system owing to its enhanced repulsion between membrane-foulant and foulant-foulant interactions. Correlation analysis revealed that the exceptional antifouling performance of the PAC system was due to its high removal rates of chemical oxygen demand (~78 %) and suspended solids (~97 %). This research offers valuable insights into the mitigation of membrane fouling through the utilization of adsorbents featuring diverse carbon structures .

The development of effective heavy metal adsorbents has always been the goal of environmentalists. Pectin/activated carbon microspheres (P/ACs) were prepared through simple gelation without chemical crosslinking and utilized for adsorption of Pb2+. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the addition of activated carbon increased the porosity of the microsphere. Texture profile analysis showed good mechanical strength of P/ACs compared with original pectin microspheres. Kinetic studies found that the adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption rate was controlled by film diffusion. Adsorption isotherms were described well by a Langmuir isotherm model, and the maximum adsorption capacity was estimated to be 279.33 mg/g. The P/ACs with the highest activated carbon (P/AC2:3) maintained a removal rate over 95.5% after 10 adsorption/desorption cycles. SEM-energy-dispersive X-ray spectrum and XPS analysis suggested a potential mechanism of adsorption are ion exchange between Pb2+and Ca2+, electronic adsorption, formation of complexes, and physical adsorption of P/ACs. All the above results indicated the P/ACs may be a good candidate for the adsorption of Pb2+.Keywords:pectin;activated carbon;microsphere;Pb2+;adsorption

Activated carbon fiber (ACF) has been demonstrated to be a good adsorbent for the removal of organic vapors in air. Some ACF has a comparable or larger surface area and higher adsorption capacity when compared with granular activated carbon (GAC) commonly used in respiratory protection devices. ACF is an attractive alternative adsorbent to GAC because of its ease of handling, light weight, and decreasing cost. ACF may offer the potential for short-term respiratory protection for first responders and emergency personnel. This study compares the critical bed depths and adsorption capacities for toluene among GAC and ACF of different forms and surface areas. GAC and ACF in cloth (ACFC) and felt (ACFF) forms were challenged in stainless steel chambers with a constant concentration of 500 ppm toluene via conditioned air at 25°C, 50% RH, and constant airflow (7 L/min). Breakthrough data were obtained for each adsorbent using gas chromatography with flame ionization detector. Surface areas of each adsorbent were determined using a physisorption analyzer. Results showed that the critical bed depth of GAC is 275% higher than the average of ACFC but is 55% lower than the average of ACFF. Adsorption capacity of GAC (with a nominal surface area of 1800 m2/g) at 50% breakthrough is 25% higher than the average of ACF with surface area of 1000 m2/g, while the rest of ACF with surface area of 1500 m2/g and higher have 40% higher adsorption capacities than GAC. ACFC with higher surface area has the smallest critical bed depth and highest adsorption capacity, which makes it a good adsorbent for thinner and lighter respirators. We concluded that ACF has great potential for application in respiratory protection considering its higher adsorption capacity and lower critical bed depth in addition to its advantages over GAC, particularly for ACF with higher surface area.

An innovative “material-component-whole” evaluation model was used to assess the overall protective performance of gas masks against ammonia. Coconut shell-based carbon (AC-S), coconut shell-impregnated carbon (ACCu-S), coal-based carbon (AC-C), and coal-impregnated carbon (ACCu-C) were chosen as the adsorbents for this study. The physicochemical characteristics of the activated carbon samples were analyzed through SEM, BET, FT-IR, EA, XPS and XRD tests. This research delves into the breakthrough curves of ammonia gas by the activated carbon and canisters under varying concentrations of ammonia, ambient temperatures, airflow velocities, and relative humidity, also exploring the breakthrough curves of ammonia gas by gas masks under different ammonia concentrations and airflow patterns while considering both dynamic and static adsorption of activated carbon. The empirical results show that increased levels of ammonia concentration, ambient temperature, and airflow velocities lead to decreased protection duration of activated carbon and canisters. Conversely, an elevation in the relative humidity within the ammonia gas stream results in an expansion of the protection time. This study found a linear correlation between the protection time of S and C canisters and the corresponding protection time of the impregnated carbon. Lastly, the protective time of gas masks in sinusoidal airflow mode is highlighted as having a more significant impact.

Gas hydrate technology is a new gas storage method developed in recent years and has great application potential. Due to the slow formation kinetics of hydrate and the low actual gas storage density, it is a promising method to prepare the fixed bed filled with wet porous materials to inducing adsorption-hydration coupling effect, so as to improve the gas storage efficiency. In this study, various additives including THF, TBAB and diesel oil were added to the water-bearing activated carbon fixed bed to improve its gas storage capacity. Our experimental results show that the addition of THF or TBAB can significantly promote the gas storage performance of the bed. At the optimum concentration of THF (7.5 wt%), the gas storage density of bed (S b ) and gas storage capacity of hydrate (S w ) were 128.66 V/V b and 194.26 V/V w , which are 2.89 times and 3.07 times higher than those of wet activated carbon fixed bed without additives, respectively. When 5 wt% TBAB was added, the S b and S w were increased by 1.86 times and 1.87 times, respectively. Moreover, using diesel to establish gas channels in the fixed bed to improve the gas mass transfer between the bulk gas phase and the fixed bed can also significantly improve the gas storage performance of the bed. When the oil-carbon ratio (R o ) is 0.5, the S b and S w are 97.97 V/V b and 172.77 V/V w , respectively. However, further increasing the amount of diesel oil will not significantly improve the gas storage density of the bed due to the volume increase of the bed caused by the addition of diesel. When both diesel oil and THF are added to the water-containing fixed bed, the effect will be not significantly better than that of the bed with diesel oil or THF alone because the two accelerators compete with each other. Finally, the gas release and decomposition speed of the water-bearing fixed bed with / without 7.5 wt%THF are investigated. The results show that the final gas recovery of the bed with 7.5 wt% THF could reach 95.01 %, indicating a good application prospect.

Lithium–sulfur batteries are promising as next-generation rechargeable energy-storage devices because of their high energy density, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, sulfur cathodes suffer from low specific capacity caused by the poor electrical conductivities of the active materials and fast capacity decay resulting from polysulfide dissolution/shuttling. Herein, we report a facile and low-cost method to solve these problems using an activated carbon (AC)–NiFe 2 O 4 /S hybrid material in which NiFe 2 O 4 is uniformly distributed on AC through a simple wet impregnation method. The AC–NiFe 2 O 4 /S material not only has a strong catalytic effect on sulfur reduction, but also provides strong binding sites to trap polysulfide intermediates. An AC–NiFe 2 O 4 /S electrode shows favorable electrochemical properties including stable reversible capacity (0.24% capacity decay per cycle at 0.1 C, retaining a capacity of 602.7 mAh g −1 after 170 cycles; stable cycling at 0.5 C, retaining a capacity of 501.9 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles), excellent rate performance, and fast electrochemical reaction kinetics compared with those of a reference AC/S electrode, which are attributed to the synergistic effects between NiFe2O4 and AC.

It is important to recover La3+from metallurgical solutions or wastewater. However, the recovery rate of La3+is usually less than 1% and the recovery methods are not environmentally friendly or user-friendly. Therefore, a straightforward, efficient, clean, and economically friendly method is needed. In this investigation, a modified adsorbent, COSAC-Na2EDTA-15, which was made from theCamellia oleiferashell (COS) and disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Na2EDTA), was invented. In addition, characterization of the COSAC-Na2EDTA-15 adsorbent was conducted using SEM and XPS, and the principle of adsorption was revealed. The adsorption kinetics followed P-S-O KM, while the isotherm of COS-activated carbon (COSAC) aligned more closely with the Langmuir model. Compared to COSAC, the maximum La3+adsorption capacity of COSAC-Na2EDTA-15 increased from 50 to 162.43 mg/g, and the content of O and N changed from 7.31% and 1.48% to 12.64% and 4.15%, respectively. The surface of the COSAC-Na2EDTA-15 exhibited abundant C, N, and O elements, and La3+was detected on the sample surface after adsorption. The test and analysis results fully indicate that La3+can be successfully adsorbed on the surface of COSAC-Na2EDTA-15. Because of its easy preparation, low cost, and superior performance, activated carbon made from COS finds extensive applications in the adsorption and recovery of rare earth elements.

In this work, a new AC@Catechol/PEI adsorbent was prepared via the copolymerization of catechol and polyethyleneimine (PEI) onto pretreated commercial activated carbon (AC). It achieved a high adsorption capacity of 411.52 mg/g for the anionic dye Congo red (CR), which was approximately 7 times that of pretreated AC without modification. In bath adsorption experiment, 1 g of adsorbent was used to treat 4 L of 100 mg/L CR solution, resulting in 98.5% CR removal. In addition, the prepared AC@Catechol/PEI adsorbent exhibited highly efficient CR competitive adsorption against SO 4 2− ions and cationic malachite green dye. The adsorption mechanism was mainly attributed to electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and π – π stacking. Catecholamine modification greatly improved the adsorption capacity and adsorption selectivity of commercial AC for CR dyes. This low-cost adsorbent may have broad prospects for the removal of anionic dyes in wastewater.

Activated carbon (AC) particles, as some of the most widely used sorbents , have an indispensable position in environmental remediation. Although AC surface adsorption was extensively investigated, its internal nanostructure has not been well elucidated. Exploitation of the internal nanostructure for pollution abatement is worthwhile pursuing to expand AC application field. Herein, the internal nanostructures of AC particle are revealed by step-by-step exfoliation and characterization, indicating that an AC particle is composed of multilevel nanostructures including carbon nanospheres and graphene-like layers to a certain extent. AC particles can be transformed into an ultrafiltration membrane through a newly developped structure exfoliation and reconstruction processes under surface regulation without additional cross-linkers. The pure AC membrane (ACM) preserves the adsorption capacity of AC particles, and further endows AC with the function of membrane separation . The ACM shows excellent stability, strong adsorption capacity (252.4 mg/g for methylene blue), narrow sieving pores distribution (5–10 nm), low-fouling property for cycling use. The considerable water flux is 12–27 times higher than commercial ultrafiltration membrane. Dual-function performances of adsorption and separation make the ACM high potential in water purification . This approach for particle-to-membrane transformation provides a new perspective for AC particle future utilization.

In this study, activated carbon operated by microwave (MW) pretreatment and further MW regeneration was used to remove sulfachloropyridazine (SCP) to explore the influence of MW on activated carbon. The results reveal the adsorption capacity (q e , exp ) of pretreated activated carbon (PAC) was double that of the original activated carbon (OAC). With an increase in adsorption/MW times, the q e , exp of regenerated activated carbon (RAC) did not change much. Through Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analyses, the Micropore volume of PAC (V micro = 0.4035 cm 3 g −1 ) was higher than that of OAC (V micro = 0.1548 cm 3 g −1 ), this indicated that PAC creates a large number of micropores as a result of MW pretreatment. Also, S BET of RAC kept within a stable range (824.97–868.88 cm 2 g −1 ), and S BET of 6th-RAC was still as high as 861.18 m 2 g −1 after 6 continuous adsorption/MW cycles, which indicated the activated carbon restored stable properties after multiple microwave regeneration.

Activated carbon (AC) has been widely utilized for the adsorption of pollutants from water. However, it is difficult to recycle the AC after adsorption. In this paper, we report a facile one-pot approach to fabricate magnetic poly(vinyl alcohol)/AC composite gel (mPVA/AC CG) by dropwise addition of an aqueous mixture of PVA, AC and iron ions into the ammonia solution. The obtained mPVA/AC CG after freeze-drying shows porous microstructure and favorable magnetic properties. The utilization of mPVA/AC CG for adsorptive removal of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) dyes from water was investigated. The mPVA/AC CG not only exhibited good adsorption performance for both MB and MO dyes but also could be readily recycled using a magnet after adsorption. The adsorption process was well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. Considering the simple fabrication process, good adsorption performance and favorable magnetic separation capability, this work provides a viable strategy for combining the features of AC and magnetic gel for fabrication of applicable magnetic adsorbent. Keywords:magnetic gel;activated carbon;adsorption;dye;methylene blue;methyl orange

Coal based activated carbon (AC) was pretreated by peracetic acid solution and used for supporting Mn catalyst towards oxidation of gaseous benzene by catalytic ozonation . The as-obtained activated carbon was characterized by XPS, BET, SEM, and TG technologies. It indicates that peracetic acid solution modification not only raised the quantity of chemisorbed oxygen or water, and hydroxyl group on activated carbon material surface, but also increased the specific surface area and benzene adsorption capacity of activated carbon. Benzene could be completely removed in 300 min and CO 2 selectivity reached to 61.9% over Mn/AC-modified catalyst. A possible catalytic ozonation mechanism of activated carbon which was treated by peracetic acid solution supported Mn catalyst for oxidation of benzene was proposed.
