Superhydrophobic/Superoleophilic PDMS/SiO2 Aerogel Fabric Gathering Device for Self-Driven Collection of Floating Viscous Oil

Feng Liu,Xin Di,Xiaohan Sun,Xin Wang,Tinghan Yang,Meng Wang,Jian Li,Chengyu Wang,Yudong Li

The persistent challenge of removing viscous oil on water surfaces continues to pose a major concern and requires immediate attention. Here, a novel solution has been introduced in the form of a superhydrophobic/superoleophilic PDMS/SiO2aerogel fabric gathering device (SFGD). The SFGD is based on the adhesive and kinematic viscosity properties of oil, enabling self-driven collection of floating oil on the water surface. The SFGD is able to spontaneously capture the floating oil, selectively filter it, and sustainably collect it into its porous fabric interior through the synergistic effects of surface tension, gravity, and liquid pressure. This eliminates the need for auxiliary operations such as pumping, pouring, or squeezing. The SFGD demonstrates exceptional average recovery efficiencies of 94% for oils with viscosities ranging from 10 to 1000 mPa·s at room temperature, including dimethylsilicone oil, soybean oil, and machine oil. With its facile design, ease of fabrication, high recovery efficiency, excellent reclaiming capabilities, and scalability for multiple oil mixtures, the SFGD represents a significant advancement in the separation of immiscible oil/water mixtures of various viscosities and brings the separation process one step closer to practical application.

Hydrophobic modification of nanoscale zero-valent iron with excellent stability and floatability for efficient removal of floating oil on water

Ziling Peng,Chunmei Xiong,Wei Wang,Fatang Tan,Xinyun Wang,Xueliang Qiao,Po Keung Wong

Usually, nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) cannot float on water because of high density and hydrophilic surface. Herein, alkyltrimethoxysilanes with different carbon chain lengths (C1, C8 and C16) were used as “water-repellent legs” to graft onto NZVI, enduing NZVI with hydrophobic and floatable characteristics like a water strider. The hydrophobic performance of as-modified NZVI materials was found to be better when NZVI was modified by alkyltrimethoxysilane with longer carbon chain, and a large contact angle of 151.2°(>150°) was obtained in C16-NZVI, indicating the superhydrophobic characteristic of C16-NZVI. The oil-absorption experiments showed that the absorption capacity of C16-NZVI for lubricating oil reached 9.73 g/g within 30 s. After seven consecutive runs, the oil-absorption capacity of C16-NZVI still maintained at 9.26 g/g, indicating high reusability of C16-NZVI. Also, C16-NZVI exhibited excellent stability in NaCl solution without being oxidized for 32 d. Significantly, C16-NZVI possessed admirable chemical stability with high hydrophobic property in acid and alkaline solutions (pH 3–12). Considering the advantages of easy preparation, high stability and reusability, excellent oil-absorption capacity as well as magnetic recovery property, C16-NZVI is expected to have remarkable potential in the treatment of floating oil on water/seawater.

Oil/Water Interfacial Destabilization of Floated Oily Sludge Based on the Catalytic Decomposition of H2O2 Induced by Interfacial-Active Complexes

Feng Li,Yingxin Gao,Min Yang

Oil–inorganic material interactions at the oil/water interface have been extensively investigated as a fundamental research area. However, less focus has been placed on the oil/water interfacial process during the oily waste treatment process. In this study, the detailed oil/water interfacial destabilization process of a floated oily sludge (FOS) solution during Fenton-like treatment is investigated. A maximum of 66.1% of oil recovery was obtained from the FOS samples after the treatment. The influence of experimental conditions such as pH, hydrogen peroxide concentration, and reaction time on the oil percentage of sediments after treatment is also studied. The reduction of oil percentage in the FOS reached 77.5%, which indicated the high efficiency of the treatment. Rheological experiments showed that the bridge between the oil and coagulant mixtures in the FOS was destroyed after the addition of H2O2. Half of the H2O2 (a total of 50 mM) was consumed, though nearly no free Fe2+ could be detected in the FOS solution at a neutral pH. Electron paramagnetic resonance experiments demonstrated an enhanced generation of ·OH that occurred due to the catalytic decomposition of H2O2 by interfacial-active complexes (IAC). The interfacial destabilization process was triggered using a direct reaction of H2O2 and iron-containing components in the IAC, as well as ·OH induced oxidation of the sulfur-containing components in the IAC at the oil/water interface. This research may provide a better understanding of oil–inorganic interactions at the oil/water interface during oily waste treatment and provide insight for the development of future processing strategies for oil recovery from oily sludge.

A Natural Monoterpene Enol for Dispersive Liquid–Liquid Microextraction Based on Solidification of Floating Organic Droplets for Determination of Benzophenone Compounds in Water Samples

Xian Zhang,Luyun Zhang,Dan Zheng,Zhenzhen Xia,Maomin Peng,Danling Sun,Xizhou Hu,Xitian Peng

In the current study, an effective and simple procedure of extraction for the four benzophenone compounds from water samples was achieved by dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME) based on the solidification of floating organic droplets (SFO) with a natural monoterpene enol as the extractant. As a natural, high solidification point, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly hydrophobic solvent, α−terpineol was selected firstly as an extractant for DLLME and could be collected and transferred easily after extraction by solidification at a lower temperature. Several main parameters closely related to extraction efficiencies, such as volume of extractant, extraction time, pH and salt concentration of the sample solution, temperature, and time of the solidification process, were investigated in detail. The results showed that the established method had good extraction performance for benzophenone compounds with enrichment factors in the range of 29–47. Furthermore, the linearities were over the range of 2–2000 µg/L, and the limits of detection were 0.12–0.53 µg/L for four benzophenone compounds. The recoveries ranged from 80.2% to 108.4%, with RSDs (intra- and inter-assay) less than 8.5%. At last, the method applicability was investigated by the determination of the benzophenone compounds in aqueous solutions, and satisfactory recoveries (83.0–107.0%) were acquired. Taken together, α−terpineol, a natural monoterpene enol, was first used as an extractant of DLLME-SFO, which provided an alternative method with simplicity and rapidity for the determination of benzophenone compounds in aqueous samples. Keywords:α−terpineol;dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME);solidification of floating organic droplet (SFO);benzophenone compounds

One-step electrospinning membranes with gradual-transition wettability gradient for directional fluid transport

Quan Shen,Yue Jiang,Shanzhu Guo,Lin Huang,Haibo Xie,Long Li

Gradual-transition wettability gradient is a highly promising wettability profile for driving fluid directionally transport across the thickness of porous membranes. However, the fabrication of such membranes is still challenging, limiting their further application in various fields. Here, we report a one-step strategy to fabricate membranes with gradual-transition wettability gradient (GMs) by programmed in-line-blending electrospinning polymers (poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and poly (ε-caprolactone-co-ethylene glycol) (PCE)) with compatible segments but obviously different wettabilities. The results demonstrate that two opposite gradual-transition wettability gradients across the thickness are successfully fabricated in GMs, and resulting GMs exhibit excellent directional liquid transport property that can only allow liquid drops and continuous flow to permeate across the thickness in the direction from the lyophobicity-rich side to the lyophilicity-rich side while blocking the permeation process in the reverse direction. Additionally, no matter under high or low gravity conditions, the directional fluid transport flux of membranes with different wettability profiles improves as the gradient layers increase from 3 to 78, corresponding to the transition of wettability profile from 3-layered Janus wettability to 78-layered gradual-transition wettability. As a result, GMs achieve much faster directional fluid transport fluxes than membranes with abrupt-change wettability gradient (AMs) and homogeneous wettability, owing to the acceleration of internal driving forces originating from the gradual-transition wettability gradient. Based on this particular property, GMs also show great potentials in ultrafast directional floating oil collection and energy-saving directional separation of oil/water mixtures, offering new insight for designing and fabricating wettability-anisotropic porous membranes with potential and versatility in multiple applications.

Rapid analysis of triazine herbicides in fruit juices using evaporation-assisted dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction with solidification of floating organic droplets and HPLC-DAD

Beiqi Wu,Yu Niu,Xinyuan Bi,Xiaowen Wang,Liyan Jia,Xu Jing

A rapid and convenient analytical procedure (evaporation-assisted dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction with solidification of floating organic droplets) is advanced for determining the concentrations of triazine herbicide residues (e.g. simazine and atrazine) in fruit juices via HPLC-DAD. The technique involves adding 1-dodecanol (low density) and dichloromethane (high density) to the test solution to act as the extraction and volatile solvents, respectively. Calcium oxide is added to generate heat to accelerate the evaporation of dichloromethane, whereupon the 1-dodecanol quickly disperses into small droplets to complete the microextraction process. Thus, there is no need to use a dispersive solvent and heating equipment is also not required. The floating 1-dodecanol is subsequently frozen using an ice bath to facilitate its separation from the sample. Under optimal conditions (250 μL of 1-dodecanol (extraction solvent), 150 μL of CH2Cl2 (volatile solvent), 1250 mg of CaO, and an extraction time of 60 s) the detection procedure is linear over the range 0.05–5 μg mL−1 (with R > 0.99). The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were determined to be 0.0022–0.0034 μg mL−1 and 0.0073–0.0113 μg mL−1, respectively. The recovery of simazine and atrazine in three fruit juices ranged between 78.5% and 96.4% with a relative standard deviation <8.2%. Therefore, the proposed approach can be effectively adopted to analyze the triazine herbicide content in fruit juices. The method has been proved to be simple, reliable, and remarkably efficient.
