In this work, an efficient and stable photo-assisted electrocatalyst of N-doped CoNiOOH for overall seawater splitting are proposed. The doped N atoms triggered local contractions of lattice, thereby, promoted the morphologies of products to evolve from nanoflowers to nanowires (NWs), and the obvious electrocatalytic enhancements. Especially under the illumination of AM 1.5 G, the U30-NWs exhibited a photo-assisted cathodic current density from −2.0 to −4.0 mA cm −2 at −0.05 V vs RHE, and also an anodic stability for more than 48 hours in seawater . Our studies reveal that the doped N atom could accumulate more electrons than O atom, leading to the degradation of Co and Ni 3d and O 2p states on either side of Fermi level , thus a p-type feature with the widened band gap and improved UV–visible light absorption. Meanwhile, the corrosion resistance was thus improved due to the chemical stable N-Co(Ni)-N bonds. This work provides a practical strategy towards the H 2 production via photo-assisted electrocatalytic seawater splitting.

Electrolysis of seawater for hydrogen (H2) production to harvest clean energy is an appealing approach. In this context, there is an urgent need for catalysts with high activity and durability. RuO2 electrocatalysts have shown efficient activity in the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER), but they still suffer from poor stability. Herein, surface S-doped nanostructured RuO2 (S-RuO2) is rationally fabricated for efficient overall seawater splitting. Doping with S enhances the activity (overpotentials of 25 mV for the HER and 243 mV for the OER), long-term durability (1000 h at 100 mA cm–2), and achieves nearly 100% Faraday efficiency (FE). Moreover, the S-RuO2-based anion exchange membrane seawater electrolyzer requires 2.01 V to reach 1.0 A cm–2 under demanding industrial conditions. Experimental analysis and theoretical calculations indicate that surface S introduction could lower the valence state of Ru, thereby conferring enhanced activity and stability. Furthermore, the nanostructured S-RuO2 electrocatalyst is highly protected by the S-doped surface, which repels Cl– in alkaline seawater. This investigation presents a feasible strategy for designing RuO2-based seawater splitting catalysts with both high performance and good resistance to anodic corrosion.

Metal-support interaction (MSI) is regarded as an indispensable manner to stabilize active metals and modulate catalytic activity, which shows great potentials in developing of efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrode with high activity and strong robustness. Herein, this work presents a novel heterostructure with ultrafine platinum quantum dots (Pt QDs) on defective catalytic supports derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). It is indicated substantial oxygen vacancies can be generated and Pt–Pt bonds can be optimized through topological transformation. The resulting Pt/T-NiFe-BDC (BDC: C 8 H 6 O 4 ) exhibits competitive HER activity in alkaline seawater, attaining ultralow overpotentials of 158 and 266 mV at 500 and 1000 mA cm –2 with fast kinetics and outstanding stability. An asymmetric water electrolyzer using Pt/T-NiFe-BDC as a cathode only requires a voltage of 1.89 V to generate an industrial density of 1000 mA cm –2 and shows no attenuation in 500-h continuous test at 500 mA cm –2 . Theoretical calculations and in-situ spectroscopic analysis reveal the reversible hydrogen spillover mechanism, in which oxygen vacancies facilitate the sluggish water dissociation and Pt QDs promote the H* combination. This study provides a new paradigm to engineer metal-supported catalysts for efficient and robust seawater splitting.

Hierarchical TiO2 nanofibers with enriched surface hydroxyl groups and oxygen vacancies have been synthesized. An assessment of their photocatalytic properties shows that the new catalyst has high stability and exhibits excellent photocatalytic H2 production performance in seawater. The enhanced activity of the catalyst is a consequence of the elevation in the rates of charge transfer and H+ adsorption by the synergistic effects of surface hydroxyls and oxygen vacancies.

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) seawater splitting is an important strategy of green industrial hydrogen production on the basis of protecting fresh water resources. In this work, a floc-like Bi x Fe 1−x VO 4 @CNT hetero-nanostructure (HNS) was fabricated as the building blocks of PEC anode and demonstrated a highly enhanced PEC efficiency and stability in seawater. In Bi x Fe 1−x VO 4 @CNT HNS, amorphous Fe mixed Bi x Fe 1−x VO 4 nanoparticles (NPs) were served for visible-light absorption, photoelectric conversion, and especially conjunct nodes of carbon nanotubes (CNTs); while CNTs were employed as the high-speed channels for carrier transfer, suppressing electron-hole recombination and leading to a highly improved PEC efficiency. As a result, the as-fabricated floc-like photoanode achieves an applicable PEC photocurrent density of 0.1 mA/cm 2 at 1.5 V versus Ag/AgCl in seawater, which demonstrates the promising potential of the floc-like Bi x Fe 1−x VO 4 @CNT HNS in future photoconversion applications.

In order to address the current energy and environmental challenges, photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting has been widely studied, and the key point about the efficient PEC process is how to develop highly active photoanode catalysts. In this article, we report a two-step hydrothermal and electrodeposition approach to prepare a cobalt (oxy)hydroxide (CoOOH)-modified Ti-Fe2O3-In2O3 electrode by synergy of electron modulation and a heterojunction structure for promoting PEC water splitting. Under a bias of 1.23 V vs RHE, the optimized Ti-Fe2O3-In2O3/CoOOH photoanode demonstrated remarkable photocurrent density and hydrogen evolution rate as high as 1.33 mA cm–2 and 22.8 μmol cm–2 h–1, which was 5.11-fold and 5.14-fold that of bare α-Fe2O3, respectively. Characterization results indicate that Ti-doping will alter the electronic structure and improve the charge carrier density, whereas the construction of a heterojunction can realize the spatial separation of charge carriers. Meanwhile, the outer CoOOH ultrathin layer can provide a large amount of oxygen evolution reaction sites and promote the surface reaction. This work suggests that the PEC performance of Fe2O3-based photoanodes can be improved effectively by the synergy of electronic modulation and heterojunction construction.

Constructing economical and corrosion-resistant catalytic electrodes for efficient and high-current seawater splitting is a significant challenge. Herein, we employed a gentle, one-step immersion method to obtain an efficient and stable self-supporting integrated catalytic electrode via nickel foam (NF) etched in situ by sodium hypophosphite and trace ruthenium (Ru@P–NF). The successful growth of spherical Ru on the P–NF resulted in high intrinsic activity and rapid electron transfer capabilities. The Ru@P–NF electrode achieved a current density of 100 mA cm−2 in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with an overpotential of only 32 mV in an alkaline simulated seawater system (1 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl). An overpotential of only 153 mV resulted in a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Moreover, this electrode necessitated a mere 1.42 V at 20 mA cm−2 to facilitate overall water splitting. Impressively, the operation of Ru@P–NF was stable at 100 mA cm−2 for over 1500 hours without significant degradation, and thus demonstrated stable catalysis for an impressive 300 h at an industrial-level high current density in a weakly alkaline seawater and urine system. This work provides robust theoretical support for the construction of efficient industrial-scale catalytic electrodes for water electrolysis.

The realization of seawater electrolysis requires high-performing anode materials that should possess good catalytic activity, stability, and specificity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) as well as high resistance toward chloride corrosion. Herein, the design of a multilayered oxygen-evolution electrode is reported to meet the multiple needs of anode material for saline water splitting. The multilayered electrode is synthesized through direct thermal boronization of commercially available NiFe alloy plate with boron powder, followed by electrochemical oxidation. And this electrode is composed of the surface oxidized NiFeBx alloy layer, the NiFeBx alloy interlayer, and the NiFe alloy substrate. The boron species are present in the form of metaborate in the outermost oxidized NiFeBx layer, and their existence is conductive to the generation and stabilization of the catalytic active phase γ-(Ni,Fe)OOH. The introduction of NiFeBx interlayer effectively prevents the excessive oxidative corrosion of the anode material in the electrolyte containing chloride ions.

Developing economical, efficient and stable bifunctional catalysts for hydrogen production from seawater is of great significance for hydrogen utilization. Herein, sulfur doped iron oxide nanosheet arrays supported on nickel foam (FeOx–Ni3S2@NF) are prepared by a one-pot solvothermal reaction. Owing to the high intrinsic activity of FeOx–Ni3S2, the large catalytic specific surface area of nanosheet arrays and the fast charge transportation capability achieved by the self-supporting configuration, the FeOx–Ni3S2@NF electrode delivers excellent catalytic performance in alkaline simulated seawater (1 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl). Impressively, a low overpotential of 120 mV at 50 mA cm−2 with a Tafel slope of 57 mV dec−1 for the hydrogen evolution reaction and an overpotential of 470 mV at 200 mA cm−2 with a Tafel slope of 62 mV dec−1 for the oxygen evolution reaction are achieved. More importantly, the voltage is only 1.5 V at 50 mA cm−2 for continuous overall water splitting for 100 h at 200 mA cm−2 with negligible decay in alkaline simulated seawater with almost 100% Faraday efficiency. This work provides a simple and universal strategy to prepare highly efficient bifunctional catalytic materials, promoting the development of Earth-abundant materials to catalyse seawater splitting to produce high-purity hydrogen.

The electrolysis of seawater for hydrogen production holds promise as a sustainable technology for energy generation. Developing water-splitting catalysts with low overpotential and stable operation in seawater is essential. In this study, we employed a hydrothermal method to synthesize NiMoWO X microrods (NiMoWO X @NF). Subsequently, an annealing process yielded a composite N -doped carbon-coated Ni 3 N/MoO 2 /WO 2 nanorods (NC@Ni 3 N/MoO 2 /WO 2 @NF), preserving the ultrahigh-specific surface area of the original structure. A two-electrode electrolytic cell was assembled using NC@Ni 3 N/MoO 2 /WO 2 @NF as the cathode and NiMoWO X @NF as the anode, demonstrating exceptional performance in seawater splitting. The cell operated at a voltage of 1.51 V with a current density of 100 mA·cm −2 in an alkaline seawater solution. Furthermore, the NC@Ni 3 N/MoO 2 /WO 2 @NF || NiMoWO X @NF electrolytic cell exhibited remarkable stability, running continuously for over 120 h at a current of 1100 mA·cm −2 without any observable delay. These experimental results are corroborated by density functional theory calculations. The NC@Ni 3 N/MoO 2 /WO 2 @NF || NiMoWO X @NF electrolyzer emerges as a promising option for industrial-scale hydrogen production through seawater electrolysis.

Developing economical and robust electrocatalysts to prevent chlorine ions corrosion and improve seawater splitting efficiency is essential for seawater electrolysis. Herein, fluorine-doped nickel cobalt phospho-sulfide nanowires (F-NiCoPS NWs) were synthesized as high-performance catalysts for overall seawater splitting. The strongly electronegative F anion is favorable to build weak metal fluorine bonds, which easily break to generate highly active species of Ni/Co-hydroxides/oxyhydroxides protective layer on the electrode surface. This process effectively avoids chlorine evolution reaction (ClER)-induced dissolution, and enhances the stability of catalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the electronegative fluorine affects the electronic structure of the catalyst’ surface, further enhancing the adsorption energy and electronic conductivity of the reaction intermediates. F-NiCoPS with appropriate F doping significantly decreased the overpotential (228 (303) mV at 10 (100) mA cm-2) and the Tafel slope (44 mV dec-1) in alkaline seawater, and exhibited a long stability of 100 h. This work provides new insights for constructing effective, cost-efficient and non-noble metal electrocatalyst for alkaline seawater splitting.

Engineering efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for simultaneous hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER) remains very crucial for practical anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWEs). Herein, a yttrium oxide doped cubic Co 3 O 4 (Y 2 O 3 -Co 3 O 4 ) catalyst engineered on plasma-treated carbon cloth (PCC) is reported which demonstrates exceptional performances for overall seawater splitting. Synthesized at an optimal crystallization temperature (250 °C), the obtained Y 2 O 3 -Co 3 O 4 /PCC features rich heterointerfaces which optimize active sites and enhance electron transfer, thereby, causing an outstanding HER activity with ultralow overpotentials of 301 mV (alkaline) and 346 mV (seawater) for transferring 1000 mA cm −2 ( j 1000 ). When the catalyst is integrated into AEMWE devices, low cell voltages of 2.11 V (alkaline) and 2.47 V (alkalized seawater) are achieved for generating j 1000 . Combined with the experimental and theoretical investigations, it reveals that the yttrium doping induces a favorable electron redistribution, where the electron delocalization of Y-site stabilizes Co 3 ⁺ species and the electron accumulation of Co-site optimizes H* adsorption. In addition, the formed heterointerface of Y 2 O 3 -Co 3 O 4 simultaneously enhances OER activity through optimizing the oxygen intermediate adsorption and strengthening the metal-oxygen bonds. Furthermore, the heterostructure design additionally reduces the lattice strain and accelerates charge transfer kinetics for seawater splitting.
