Piezoelectric catalytic seawater hydrogen production is one of the most crucial and potential hydrogen production strategies. However, the low surface activity and the high carrier recombination rate limit the further improvement of catalytic efficiency. To solve this problem, we prepared SrBi 4 Ti 4 O 15 (SBTO) and FeS 2 (FS) heterojunctions, which can effectively utilize the valence state transformation cycle between Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ to improve the surface activity and maintain carrier separation. This mechanism of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ conversion is similar to the well-known Fenton reaction. It was confirmed by electrochemical measurements that with the help of FeS 2 , SBTO possessed a stronger piezoelectric current response and faster carrier transfer rate. Piezoelectric catalytic seawater splitting H 2 evolution rate of SBTO-25 %FeS 2 could reach 31 mmol g -1 h −1 , which is higher than that of other piezoelectric materials in similar conditions. Our findings provide valuable insights for further improving the efficiency of seawater hydrogen production efficiency.

Although water electrolysis provides a promising technology for global hydrogen economics, highly efficient electrocatalysts are required to boost the sluggish kinetics of both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under neutral conditions. Herein, we synthesized novel polyethyleneimine (PEI) functionalized Echinops-like Rh porous nanostructures (Echinops-like Rh PNNSs) by a solvothermal method, which originated from the self-assembly of Rh two-dimensional (2D) sub-nanoflakes with 1.2 nm thickness. As a good electron donor, −NH2 on PEI could modulate the electronic structure of Echinops-like Rh PNNSs, reducing the adsorption energy of H2O on the surface of Echinops-like Rh PNNSs. Meanwhile, −NH2 groups could specifically enrich H2O molecules under neutral conditions, which facilitates water splitting. The as-synthesized Echinops-like Rh PNNSs exhibit high HER activity with ultralow overpotential, low Tafel slope, and excellent stability. Moreover, the Echinops-like Rh PNNSs also showed an enhanced OER activity than commercial RuO2 with a small overpotential of 79.5 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in neutral media. When using Echinops-like Rh PNNSs as both anode and cathode catalysts for overall seawater splitting, a cell voltage of only 1.61 V is needed for generating 10 mA cm−2 current density, greatly boosting the efficiency of seawater splitting.

Seawater electrolysis is an efficient method for producing carbon-neutral hydrogen; however, it is hindered by high energy cost and chlorine evolution reaction. In this study, we report Ru, P dual-doped NiMoO 4 multichannel nanorods in-situ grown on nickel foam (Ru/P-NiMoO 4 @NF), which can achieve chlorine-free hydrogen production by coupling seawater splitting with thermodynamically favorable urea oxidation . The Ru/P-NiMoO 4 @NF exhibits bifunctional activity with working potentials of 0.23 V to deliver 3000 mA cm −2 for HER and 1.46 V to deliver 1000 mA cm −2 for UOR. The overall urea splitting system in the two-electrode electrolyzer require low voltage of 1.73 V to drive 500 mA cm −2 , and demonstrate remarkable durability to keep above 100 mA cm −2 for 145 h. Density functional theory calculations reveal that dual-doping modulate the d -band center of catalyst, thus enhancing the adsorption of reactants and intermediates. This work provides information for designing catalysts for combing seawater splitting with urea purification.

The electrocatalytic production of hydrogen from seawater provides a low-cost way to realize energy conversion, but is restricted by high potential for seawater electrolysis and the chlorine oxidation reaction (ClOR) at the anode. Here, the self-growth of Mo-doped Ni 2 P nanosheet arrays with rich P vacancies on molybdenum-nickel foam (MNF) (Mo-Ni 2 P v @MNF) is reported as bifunctional catalyst for Cl-free hydrogen production by coupling hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) in seawater. Impressively, the Mo-Ni 2 P v @MNF electrode as bifunctional catalyst has an excellent activity for overall hydrazine splitting (OHzS) with an ultralow voltage of only 571 mV at 1000 mA cm −2 and can maintain stability for an ultra-long time of 1000 h at 100 mA cm −2 . Moreover, integration of OHzS into self-assembled hydrazine fuel cells (DHzFC) or solar cells can enable the self-powered H 2 production. The industrial hydrazine sewage as feed for the above eletrolysis system can be degraded to ≈5 ppb rapidly. Density functional thoery calculations demonstrate that the electronic structure modulation induced by P vacancies and Mo doping can not only achieve thermoneutral ΔG H* for hydrogen evolution reaction but also enhance dehydrogenation kinetics from *N 2 H 4 to *NHNH 2 for HzOR, achieving enhanced dehydrogenation kinetics.

Hydrogen production through seawater electrolysis faces several challenges, one of which involves the development of electrocatalysts with high catalytic performance. Here, surface amorphization and morphology engineering are combined to design a novel electrocatalyst for highly-efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The surface-amorphized MoO 2 /Ni 3 (PO 4 ) 2 microcolumns supported on nickel foam (SA-MoO 2 /Ni 3 (PO 4 ) 2 /NF) display remarkable performance with low overpotentials of 34 and 46 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1 m KOH and alkaline seawater, respectively. In addition, the alkaline electrolysis cell (AEC) integrated with SA-MoO 2 /Ni 3 (PO 4 ) 2 /NF as the cathode and Ni foam as the anode achieves a current density of 100 mA cm −2 at 1.87 V in 6 m KOH seawater at 60 °C, superior to that of industrial NiMo electrode as cathode (2.05 V). DFT calculations demonstrate that the surface amorphous layer (MoO x ) improves the hydrogen adsorption energy of sample and reduces the energy barrier of water dissociation. It is found that substantial improvement in catalytic performance stems from the synergistic effect between surface amorphization and unique microcolumn morphology. These findings may provide insights into combining surface amorphization and morphology engineering strategies to enhance catalytic performance and pave the way for the development of highly efficient seawater HER electrocatalysts.

Seawater hydrogen production, vital for sustainable energy solutions and freshwater preservation, faces challenges due to seawater complexity and high energy consumption. A strategy to modulate dehydrogenation kinetics of dual-phase metal nitrides using low-loaded Pt quantum dots (QDs), achieving stable and energy-efficient hydrogen generation is introduced. The Pt QDs@Ni 3 N-MoN/Ti catalyst displays outstanding bifunctional seawater catalytic performance, enabling efficient hydrogen production and hydrazine degradation in a flow anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) device. Operating at a low voltage of 1.41 V, it achieves 2 A cm −2 for 300 h, circumventing chlorine corrosion and yielding record-breaking energy equivalent input (2.68 kWh m −3 H 2 at 1 A cm −2 ), a 47.1% reduction compared to traditional methods. Integration with solar and biomass energy facilitates self-powered hybrid seawater hydrogen production, highlighting its potential applications. This work facilitates energy-efficient marine resource conversion to green hydrogen and offers viable insights into industrial hazardous pollutant degradation using metal-nitride electrocatalysts.

Solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) are recognized for their efficient and versatile conversion of renewable energy into hydrogen's chemical energy. However, the long-term stability of large-scale seawater electrolysis remains an area that requires further exploration. In this work, Gd 0.2 Ce 0.8 O 2-δ (GDC) is impregnated into the fuel electrode channels of a large-scale flat-tube SOEC using an infiltration technique. This approach is designed to mitigate the degradation associated with charge transfer at the fuel electrode, thereby enhancing the cell's long-term operational stability. The GDC-decorated electrolysis cell exhibits stable operation over a 500 h period with seawater, with a degradation rate of approximately 0.015 %/h, which is less than half of the non-impregnated cell, which registers a degradation rate of 0.031 %/h. Utilizing the distribution of relaxation time technology, it is determined that the degradation of the electrolysis cell predominantly correlated with the oxygen ion transport and charge transfer processes at the fuel electrode, with no significant relation to the processes at the air electrode or to gas adsorption/desorption. This work demonstrates that the infiltration strategy for decorating the fuel electrode can effectively prolong the service life of SOECs.

Achieving acidic seawater hydrogen production under commercial current densities remains a challenge. We present here a novel strategy through strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) and Pt-p-block alloys (PtM@CNT, M = Ga, In, Pb, and Bi) to construct a stable electronic perturbation and achieve acidic seawater hydrogen evolution performance at commercial current densities for the first time. SMSI stabilizes electronic perturbation and promotes durability up to 360 h. The optimized Pt 61 Ga 39 @CNT exhibits an overpotential of 18 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and maintains 360 h stability at 500 mA cm −2 in acidic seawater. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals that the optimized d -band center of Pt and ΔG H* increase the catalytic activity, and the higher vacancy formation energy enhances the durability. Overall, this discovery not only first achieves stable acidic seawater hydrogen production under commercial current densities, but also opens a new opportunity to explore catalytic applications of p-block alloys and SMSI stabilized electronic perturbation.

Seawater splitting to produce hydrogen holds promise for renewable energy but faces challenges from chloride ions, causing electrode corrosion and competition between chlorine oxidation reaction (ClOR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Therefore, it is crucial to develop highly efficient and stable electrocatalysts for seawater splitting. Here, we employ a dual-doping strategy of Mo/Cr cations and a sulfuration approach to fabricate the S-MoCr-NiFe@NF bifunctional catalyst with a 3D nano-flower structure. The S-MoCr-NiFe@NF catalyst exhibits remarkable catalytic performance for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1.0 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl and 1.0 M KOH + Seawater, achieving current densities of 10 mA cm −2 at low overpotentials of 116 and 141 mV, respectively. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the S-MoCr-NiFe@NF catalyst exhibited remarkable performance in alkaline overall seawater splitting, requiring only 1.48 and 1.57 V to achieve current densities of 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl and 1.0 M KOH + Seawater, respectively. The in-situ Raman and DFT calculations confirm Ni as the primary active sites, reducing the energy barrier of the rate-determining step and enhancing OER performance. This study will offer a viable approach to developing and creating highly effective bifunctional catalysts for seawater splitting.
