Microplastics pollution in river systems has generated great concern; however, few studies have focused on the contributions of multiple influencing factors to microplastics in river systems. In the current study, we utilized data on microplastics in surface sediments from the Haihe River, a seagoing river in northern China to establish a generalized additive model (GAM) for quantifying the effects of multiple factors on the distribution of microplastics. A high abundance of microplastics (4980 ± 2462 items∙kg −1 dry weight) was found. Small particles (< 1000 µm) accounted for a dominant proportion (44.8−61.0%). Polyethylene (PE) was the chief component with an averaged fraction of 49.3%, in which low- and high-density polyethylene contributed 90.7% and 9.3% of the PE, respectively. Microplastics abundance was positively correlated with sediment TOC and the silt fraction ( p < 0.05) but negatively correlated with the sand fraction ( p < 0.05). The GAM could explain approximate 60% of the total microplastics abundance, and dam (28.5%), sediment TOC (22.9%), and sewage effluent (17.6%) were the main contributors to total variations in microplastics abundance. Local sewage effluent acted as an important point source of microplastics discharge, and the dam on the river greatly affected the deposition and accumulation of microplastics.

As an important connection of terrestrial and marine ecosystems, rivers input multitudinous (micro)plastics into the oceans. However, comparisons of field and estimated riverine inputs of (micro)plastics and contributions of multiple parameters are limited. Herein, the mainstream Haihe River (MHR), a typical seagoing river under great pressure of high urbanization and industrialization, is studied as an example. Field samplings were conducted using a 100 μm Manta trawl, and a generalized additive model (GAM) was developed to interpret the differences between the local and estimated riverine inputs. Lower abundance (9.9 ± 7.2 items·m–3) with higher diversity, while higher abundance (11.3 ± 7.5 items·m–3) with lower diversity of microplastics was found during the wet and dry seasons. Polyethylene, polypropylene, and poly(ethylene terephthalate) may originate from nonseasonal sources, while polyamide and polyurethane may come from seasonal sources. The annual (2018–2019) riverine inputs of microplastics and plastics from the MHR into the Bohai Sea were 3.93–5.78 tons (3.91–5.76 billion items) and 30.81–38.67 tons (4.01–5.87 billion items), which were substantially lower than estimations from previous models. GAM gave the main parameters contributing to the variations in microplastics, including hydrochemical conditions (34.4%), dam interception (14.6%), sewage effluents (8.0%), and population density (1.1%). In addition to anthropogenic activities, the effects of hydrochemical conditions on microplastics should also be considered.

The colonization characteristics of bacterial communities on microplastics or plastic debris (PD) have generated great concern in recent years. However, the influence of environmental factors and polymer types on the formation of bacterial communities on PD in estuarine areas is less studied. To gain additional insights, five types of PD (polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene, and polyurethane) were exposed for three-time periods (two weeks, four weeks, and six weeks) in the Haihe Estuary. 16S rRNA gene sequencing was used to identify the bacterial communities on PD, in seawater, and in sediment samples. The results indicate that the average growth rate of a biofilm is affected by nutrients (total nitrogen and total phosphorus) and salinity. Furthermore, salinity is the primary factor affecting bacterial diversity of the colonies on PD. In addition, genera of bacteria show selectivity toward the PD polymer type and tend to colonize their preferred substrate. Compared with seawater and sediment, PD could be carriers for enrichment of Vibrio in the estuarine environment with salinity ≥26 (± 2‰), which might increase the ecological risk of PD in marine environments.

A novel multifunctional sensor based on the ‘privileged ligand’ salen scaffold conjugated with BODIPY was designed and synthesized. This conjugate displays a sequential recognition of Hg 2+ and I − with high selectivity and sensitivity via formation of three-component ensembles. These new approaches have been successfully applied for the detection of their corresponding targets in Haihe River with acceptable recovery.
