Microsized Cu 2 O particles are widely used in tin-free marine antifouling (AF) paints. Because of the enlarged specific surface area, utilization of Cu 2 O particles with smaller sizes is a potential way to improve the AF efficiency and lower the Cu 2 O content. In this paper, the clay, commonly applied as filler in the paint, was previously used to control the concentration of free Cu 2 + during the synthesis of Cu 2 O. With the help of clay, the size of obtained Cu 2 O particles decreased from 750 to 460 nm. It has been shown that the smaller-sized Cu 2 O can work against the marine biofouling with a lower content (15 wt%) compared to the commercial microsized Cu 2 O (40 wt%) in the 260 days of marine AF field tests.

Marine biofouling has caused huge economic and energy losses, and the application of marine antifouling coatings is one of the effective solutions to this problem. Sily-acrylate based self-polishing coatings are favored because of excellent antifouling performance. However, weak static antifouling performance restricts the development of sily-acrylate based antifouling coatings. To solve this problem, an eugenol ester-based sily-acrylate polymer (EMSPs) is synthesised, which showed both self-polishing and antifouling performance. The highest content of eugenol (EMSP-16) inhibits Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) up to 62.2% and 76.3%, respectively, and inhibits the adhesion of Halamphora sp. and Nitzschia closterium (N. closterium) up to 85.1% and 90.8%, respectively. Mussel adhesion experiments show that mussels tend to avoid coatings with high eugenol content. The eugenol ester-based sily-acrylate polymer provides a new way to develop new environmentally friendly marine antifouling coatings and alleviate heavy metal pollution in the marine environment.

In order to reduce the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), it is of great practical significance to develop water-based self-polishing antifouling coatings instead of traditional acrylic self-polishing antifouling coatings. However, when preparing film forming matrix resin emulsions for water-based antifouling coatings, the use of emulsifiers in large amounts causes film-forming defects and poor adhesion. Herein, soap-free emulsion polymerization is utilized to prepare resin emulsions by copolymerization of hydrophilic monomers, lipophilic monomers and polymerizable hydrophilic ionic monomers. The hydrophilic structure can give the water-based polymer self-emulsification function to maintain the stability of the emulsion and can promote the fusion between the latex particles by forming hydrogen bonds and coordination bonds, and its connection with the pigments and fillers in the coating can also promote the excellent film formation of the coating. The experimental results show that the water-based self-polishing antifouling resin emulsion has good storage stability and compatibility with the pigments and fillers. The coatings formulated using this emulsion as the film-forming matrix firmly adhered to substrates and displayed satisfactory antifouling performance even after being exposed to a real sea environment for 18 months. This study presents a simple approach for the development of water-based resin emulsion with good storage stability and good water-based self-polishing marine antifouling coatings.

Current environmentally friendly marine antifouling (AF) coatings are mainly polymeric with a relatively low hardness. Hard sol–gel-derived AF coatings for underwater robot-cleaning are seldom used. In this work, two new organoalkoxysilanes, i.e., (N-methoxyacylethyl)-3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and 2-(2-hydroxy-3-(3-(trimethoxysilyl)propoxy)propyl)benzo[d]isothiazol-3(2H)-one, were synthesized by a facile method. These two precursors were used with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) to produce three series of hybrid AF coatings with zwitterionic group (Z-χ), antibacterial group (1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one) (A-χ) and zwitterionic and antibacterial groups (S-χ) by a sol–gel process. The hardness of the coatings was measured using a pencil hardness tester and the AF behaviors of the coatings were examined by laboratory and field assays. A pencil hardness up to 5 H was achieved and slight deterioration was observed after 9 months of immersion in artificial seawater for the A-χ and S-χ coatings at a sufficiently high TEOS content. A synergistic effect between the zwitterion and antimicrobial agents existed but was not obvious. A higher TEOS content led to a higher hardness and better AF performance regardless of the type of AF group. Even with the same biofilm formation after field assay, coatings with a higher TEOS content exhibited a better resistance to mussel settlement.
