MOF-based cotton fabrics with switchable superwettability for oil–water separation

Guanghui Zhang,Yan Liu,Chao Chen,Lulu Long,Jinsong He,Dong Tian,Ling Luo,Gang Yang,Xiaohong Zhang,Yanzong Zhang

Superwettability materials with a single function cannot meet the needs of different oil-bearing wastewater separations. This study proposed a preparation method for the swappable superwettability on cotton fabrics. The superhydrophobic fabric surface that was wetted with ethanol transformed from being superhydrophobic/superoleophilic to being superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic, and returned to superhydrophobicity after drying. Regardless of whether it is the oil removal process or the water removal process, the flux of the fabric was above 15,300 L·m −2 h −1 , and the separation efficiency was over 98.6%. Although the continuous separation was conducted 50 times, the flux and separation efficiency did not change significantly. The prepared material could exhibit superhydrophobicity after being immersed in solutions of different pH and actual seawater for some time, even after 50 times of sand impact experiments, indicating excellent mechanical durability and chemical stability. Thus, the preparation strategy of the swappable superwettability materials can develop oil–water separation technology.

Controllable superwettability of Cu mesh by one-step immersion in fatty acids with different carbon chain lengths

Jiahang Liu,Jian He,Pan Wu,Chao Yang,Wei Jiang

The preparation of superhydrophobic metal surfaces by one-step immersion in fatty acid solutions is simple and convenient, but the effect of the fatty acid type has not been investigated. In this work, Cu meshes were soaked in ethanol solutions of fatty acids with different carbon chain lengths to obtain surfaces with different wettabilities , which varied from superhydrophilicity to superhydrophobicity. The results showed that the contact angle of the surfaces gradually increased from 2.7 ° for the sample prepared with formic acid to 151.8 ° for the sample prepared with myristic acid. The maximum apparent surface energy and solubility parameter were 82.33 mN/m and 65.79 J 1/2 /cm 3/2 for the C 1 -Cu surface, and the lowest were only 6.3 mN/m and 19.91 J 1/2 /cm 3/2 , respectively, for C 14 -Cu. A simulation confirmed that as the carbon chain length of the fatty acid increased, the solubility parameter decreased, and the hydrophobicity increased. One-step immersion enables facile, inexpensive one-step preparation of membrane surfaces with controllable superhydrophobicity for large-scale industrial applications.

Magnetically controlled super-wetting surface switching between ultra-low and ultra-high droplet adhesion

Limei Tian,Haixu Dou,Yanlong Shao,Yaozhen Yi,Xue Fu,Jie Zhao,Yong Fan,Weihua Ming,Luquan Ren

Controlled liquid adhesion behaviors on super-wetting surfaces have gained significant attention, however, precise controlling of adhesion behavior is extremely hard to realize due to some inherent limitation in surface chemistry or morphology. Herein, we report a silicone-oil-infused magnetic porous polydimethylsiloxane (SMPP) surface with magnetically tunable super-wetting behaviors. Benefiting from the magnetic-field-responsive structure and interconnected porous characteristics, the SMPP can use magnetic field to control the seepage and absorption of silicone oil in the micropore channels, thereby precisely changing the adhesion of the water droplets on the surface. Compared to conventional super-wetting surfaces, this SMPP surface displays reversible in-situ conversion from ultra-high to ultra-low droplet adhesion with sliding angles ranging from 3° to 180° that hold up well even after severe cutting or abrasion. We also demonstrated that this tunable adhesion behavior can be used not only to enhance droplet manipulation in spatiotemporal but also to design unique microfluidic microreactors and antigravity transport devices. We envision that this proof-in-concept surface can serve as an important component of integrated control systems for intelligent manipulators, biochemical reactions, fluid transport, and biomedical analysis.

Stainless steel mesh coated with defect engineered ZIF-67 toward pH-switchable wettability and efficient organic liquids separation

Peizhang Zhou,Yuanyang Yan,Jiang Cheng,Cailong Zhou

In this work, stainless steel mesh coated with stearic acid and tetradecanedioic acid modulated ZIF-67 (SA+TDA/mZIF-67@SSM) was prepared via facile electrodeposition . The composite modulators supply defect engineering on the MOFs , endowing the as-prepared meshes with pH-switchable wettability . The ratio of modulators significantly affected the crystal morphology and wetting property of SA+TDA/mZIF-67@SSM, resulting from the competitive coordination between the modulation and crystal growth process. The SA+TDA/mZIF-67@SSM exhibited highly hydrophobic, while it became amphiphilic after soaked in alkaline solution because some exposed carboxylic acid groups on the mesh were deprotonated. The SA+TDA/mZIF-67@SSM achieved efficient and adjustable organic liquids separation, with the separation efficiency both up to 98% before and after the wettability transition. In addition, the SA+TDA/mZIF-67@SSM could realize the separation of oil/water/oil mixtures, with the separation efficiency larger than 98%. This work introduces a new technique of modulated MOFs coated mesh with pH-responsivity for separating organic liquids based on defect engineering.

Use of the droplet convergence effect of under-medium superlyophilic membranes in designing a system for on-demand separations of oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions

Qin Zhang,Jing Li,Ying Dong,Xiao-Yu Yang

Separation using superwetting membranes that have discrepant interactions with water and oil, primarily those that display extreme liquid repellence, is a facile approach for oily wastewater treatment and purification of water-containing oil. However, these kinds of membranes suffer from size-sieving limitation. Owing to greater affinity toward dispersed droplets over liquid media, under-medium superlyophilic membranes have greater flexibility in the design of superwetting interfaces for oil–water separation. Herein, two membranes with completely opposite superwettabilities both in air and under oil/water media were utilized to create an integrated system for effective, on-demand separation of oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions. At superwetting interfaces, the under-medium superlyophilic membrane facilitates convergence of emulsion droplets while the other membrane intercepts converged droplets. As a result, the integrated membranes exhibit high purification capabilities of water and oil in surfactant-stabilized emulsions (e.g., > 99.97 % oil purification under gravity). The viscosity-dependent fluxes are > 550 L m −2 h −1 when the viscosities of the liquid media are ≤ 1 mPa s. In contrast, an integrated system in which conventional in-air superhydrophilic membranes are utilized in place of the under-medium superlyophilic membranes does not efficiently separate the emulsions. The unique affinity profiles will endow under-medium superlyophilic membranes with a high potential for liquid–liquid separation.

Bin Zhan,Yan Liu,Wen-Ting Zhou,Shu-Yi Li,Zhi-Biao Chen,Thomas Stegmaier,Maryam Aliabadi,Zhi-Wu Han,Lu-Quan Ren

Oily wastewater causes serious pollution to the environment and has aroused widespread concern. Herein, non-toxic, environmentally friendly, multi-functional superwetting GO/g-C 3 N 4 /TiO 2 (GCT) foam was prepared via hydrothermal treatment and freeze-drying methods. The as-prepared GCT foam could simultaneously separate oil–water mixtures and adsorb water-soluble organic dyes, both the separation efficiency and adsorption efficiency are higher than 98%. In addition, the GCT foam have the ability to separate various oil-in-water emulsions with separation efficiency of higher than 99%. Meanwhile, the as-prepared GCT foam was able to degrade oil pollution and showed excellent antioil-fouling capability. The as-prepared multifunctional GCT foam is expected to have broad prospects in the treatment of oily wastewater and the adsorption of water-soluble organic pollutants, which may be providing a new strategy for the oily wastewater remediation.

Preparation of novel cotton fabric composites with pH controlled switchable wettability for efficient water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions separation

Wang Qian,Wu Jianning,Meng Guihua,Wang Yixi,Liu Zhiyong,Guo Xuhong

The wetting materials with the ability of controllable oil/water separation have drawn more and more public attention. In this article, the novel cotton fabric (CF) with pH controlled wettability transition was designed by a simple, environmentally friendly coating copolymer/SiO 2 nanoparticles, poly(heptadecafluorodecyl methacrylate- co -3-trimethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate- co -2-vinilpiridine) (PHDFDMA- co -PTMSPMA- co -P2VP). Furthermore, the structures and morphologies of coated CF were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), NMR, GPC, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The coated CF exhibits switchable wettability between superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity via adjusting pH value. When the coated CF is placed in the neutral aqueous (pH = 7.0), it is superhydrophobic in the air and superoleophilic. It allows oil to go through but blocking water. However, in acidic aqueous environment (pH = 3.0), it turns superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic, which allows water to penetrate but blocking oil. Therefore, the coated CF could be applied to separate oil/water mixtures, ternary oil/water/water mixtures continuously and different surfactant stabilized emulsions (oil-in-water, water-in-oil) and displays the superior separation capacity for oil–water mixtures with a high efficiency of 99.8%. Moreover, the cycling tests demonstrate that the coated CF possesses excellent recyclability and durability. Such an eminent, controllable water/oil permeation feature makes coated CF could be selected as an ideal candidate for oil/water separation.

A Smart Slippery Surface with Reversible Dynamic Temperature Responsiveness for Long-Term Controllable Anti-Icing

Jiru Huai,Jiaxuan Zhang,Peng Wang,Wenjie An,Xiang Zhao,Zhen Zhang,Wenliang Wang,Wei Duan,Ying Yue

Recently, slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) is widely utilized for anti-icing. Nevertheless, a major challenge hindering the practical applications of SLIPS is the depletion of lubricating oil, significantly deteriorating its deicing performance. Given that super-slippery effects are not required during most non-icing periods, this research introduces a novel dynamic wettability-adjustable SLIPS anti-icing coating inspired by the nepenthes. This coating-comprising modified diatomaceous earth and soft silicone rubber-releases lubricating oil only when temperatures fall below −2 °C, thus exhibiting super-slippery characteristics and effectively preventing icing. The porous modified diatomaceous earth retains lubricating oil for prolonged periods and facilitates its controlled release under external forces. The high elasticity and strength of the soft silicone rubber endow the coating with thermal expansion and contraction capabilities, enabling the active absorption and release of lubricating fluid in response to temperature variations. This coating, prepared using a straightforward strategy, demonstrates an ice adhesion strength and an oil loss rate of less than 23 kPa and 13%, respectively, after 50 icing/de-icing cycles. These findings highlight the remarkable performance of the coating, providing valuable insights for achieving long-term anti-icing on the external surfaces of equipment in extreme working conditions.

Superwetting Ti3C2TX MXene membranes intercalated with sodium alginate for oil/water separation

Kun Hou,Hu Zhou,Ke Zhu,Chunye Xie,Simin Liu,Yingxiang He,Xingyi Zhu,Ming Wu,Tiefan Huang

Oily wastewater seriously endangers human health. Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene has attracted extensive attention as a building block for separating membranes because of its unique two-dimensional structure and excellent hydrophilicity. In this study, we constructed a superwetting Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene membrane intercalated with sodium alginate. The hydrophilic sodium alginate not only enlarged the nanochannel of the MXene membrane but also decorated the membrane surface and endowed the membrane with excellent surface superwetting properties. The underwater oil contact angle (OCA) was about 151°, indicating an extremely low adhesion between oil and membrane surface. The membrane could also separate a series of oil-water emulsions with high separation efficiency and flux. Due to its excellent underwater superoleophobicity, the membrane demonstrated outstanding antifouling property. Excellent separation performance was maintained even after separation cycles. This work provides insights into the rational use of MXene-based membranes design and demonstrates its potential in the field of membrane separation.

Bioinspired medical indwelling catheters with hierarchically structured coatings exhibiting specific wettability and antibacterial property

Xuelian Feng,Yigang Guo,Na Zhao,Qian Dong,Zhangzhi Li

The use of medical indwelling catheters in conjunction with implantable medical devices has saved countless lives in various medical procedures. However, biofilm formation on catheter surfaces remains a persistent problem that can lead to chronic infections and device failure. Current approaches to addressing this issue involve the use of biocidal agents or self-cleaning surfaces, but these methods are limited in their effectiveness. Superwettable surfaces have shown great promise in preventing biofilm formation by manipulating the adhesive properties between bacteria and catheter surfaces. In this study, we present a novel medical indwelling catheter with hierarchically structured coatings that exhibit specific wettability and antibacterial properties . By integrating the hierarchical structure and specific wettability, we have developed an indwelling catheter with high flexibility and self-cleaning ability, which is very promising in biomedical engineering applications. Our approach draws inspiration from natural examples, such as the compound eyes of mosquitoes and lotus leaves, and represents a significant step forward in the development of effective anti-infection strategies for medical indwelling catheters.

Biomimetic and Superwettable Nanofibrous Skins for Highly Efficient Separation of Oil-in-Water Emulsions

Jianlong Ge,Dingding Zong,Qing Jin,Jianyong Yu,Bin Ding

Developing a feasible and efficient separation membrane for the purification of highly emulsified oily wastewater is of significance but challenging due to the critical limitations of low flux and serious membrane fouling. Herein, a biomimetic and superwettable nanofibrous skin on an electrospun fibrous membrane via a facile strategy of synchronous electrospraying and electrospinning is created. The obtained nanofibrous skin possesses a lotus-leaf-like micro/nanostructured surface with intriguing superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity, which are due to the synergistic effect of the hierarchical roughness and hydrophilic polymeric matrix. The ultrathin, high porosity, sub-micrometer porous skin layer results in the composite nanofibrous membranes exhibiting superior performances for separating both highly emulsified surfactant-free and surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions. An ultrahigh permeation flux of up to 5152 L m −2 h −1 with a separation efficiency of >99.93% is obtained solely under the driving of gravity (≈1 kPa), which was one order of magnitude higher than that of conventional filtration membranes with similar separation properties, showing significant applicability for energy-saving filtration. Moreover, with the advantage of an excellent antioil fouling property, the membrane exhibits robust reusability for long-term separation, which is promising for large-scale oily wastewater remediation.

Bioinspired Nanostructured Surfaces for On-Demand Bubble Transportation

Xin Tang,Hairui Xiong,Tiantian Kong,Ye Tian,Wen-Di Li,Liqiu Wang

The maneuver of small bubbles in a programmed way will advance numerous processes, including gas evolution reaction and aeration. Unlike in-air droplets, rapidly rising bubbles in liquid medium can hardly be steered through interaction with solid substrates, causing difficulties in maneuvering bubbles. We pattern and lubricate nanoporous substrates with regions of contrasting wettability that is similar to the back of Namib desert beetles and subsequently immerse the lubricated surface underwater to spontaneously form spatially patterned Nepenthes-inspired slippery surfaces after the dewetting of lubricants. As a result, bubbles are confined on lubricant-infused surfaces, with their high mobility well preserved. The interfacial states of attached bubbles are analyzed, and their dynamic sliding velocities are quantified. Using the lubricated patterned surfaces, we further demonstrate the predefined motion of bubbles driven by buoyancy at a small tiling angle, as well as a self-propulsion of bubbles driven by surface tension force at a tilting angle of 0°, respectively. The spatially lubricated surfaces simplify gas handling in liquid medium and have potential applications in fields where bubble handling is crucial.
