High thermal buffer and radiative cooling sodium alginate-based Janus aerogel enables multi-scenario thermal management for firefighting clothing

Shengnan Ouyang,Qing Jiang,Yuhang Wan,Xueru Qu,Zhicai Yu,Hualing He,Jinfeng Wang

Firefighting clothing is an indispensable protective equipment for firefighters performing rescue activities under extreme heat and fire conditions. However, few bio-based thermal management materials that provide thermal comfort to firefighters in different operational scenarios have been reported. Herein, we present a novel strategy to prepare Janus-type aerogels based on sodium alginate biological macromolecules, consisting of a SiO 2 nanoparticle layer and a microencapsulated paraffin@SiO 2 phase-change composite layer. A passive radiative cooling and thermal energy storage was integrated into a functional dual-mode material system. Results show that Janus-type aerogel to cool down by 11.5 °C on a hot summer day. Meanwhile, paraffin@SiO 2 has a high melting enthalpy of 127.5 J g −1 that effectively buffers temperature rise during the phase-change process. This Janus-type aerogel has ultra-low heat insulation (0.042 W/(m·K)), it can delay approximately 76.6 s to reach second-degree burn time for skin at a radiant heat exposure of 18.4 kW m −2 . The work provides an innovative way to develop bio-based thermal management materials, which could enable multi-scenario thermal management for firefighting clothing.

Durable and Wearable Self-powered Temperature Sensor Based on Self-healing Thermoelectric Fiber by Coaxial Wet Spinning Strategy for Fire Safety of Firefighting Clothing

Jiang Qing,Wan Yuhang,Qin Yi,Qu Xueru,Zhou Mi,Huo Siqi,Wang Xiaochun,Yu Zhicai,He Hualing

Self-healable electronics with self-recoverable mechanical properties show a lot of potential in improving the reliability and durability of wearable electronic devices, but it is still challenging. Herein, a self-healing core-sheath thermoelectric (TE) fiber-based temperature sensor was continuously fabricated by coaxial wet-spinning strategy, whose core layer and sheath layer are, respectively, pure Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene and self-healing silk sericin (SS)/oxide sodium alginate (OSA) composite. The prepared SS/OSA@MXene core-sheath TE fiber exhibits accurate temperature-sensing at 200–400 °C based on a linear relationship between TE voltage and temperature difference. The core-sheath TE fiber that can be integrated into firefighting clothing and timely alert firefighters to evacuate from the fire before the protective clothing becomes damaged. When exposed to flames, SS/OSA@MXene can rapidly trigger a high-temperature warning voltage of 3.36 mV within 1.17 s and exhibit reversible high-temperature alarm performance. In addition, the fractured SS/OSA@MXene can restore up to 89.12% of its original strain limit at room temperature because of the robust yet reversible dynamic covalent bonds between SS and OSA. In this study, an ingenious strategy for developing a durable and wearable TE fiber-based self-powered temperature sensor was proposed. This strategy has promising application prospects in real-time temperature detection of firefighting clothing to ensure the safety of firefighters operating on a fire scene. Graphical Abstract

Thermally robust hierarchical nanofiber triboelectric yarns for efficient energy harvesting in firefighting E-textiles

Jing Yan,Haoxuan Wang,Kaibo Wang,Weimin Kang,Guang Yang

Textile-based triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) face challenges in achieving high performance and fulfilling functional requirement for special applications. This paper presents the development of a high-performance, thermally robust hierarchical polyimide (PI) nanofiber triboelectric yarns with a charge-trapping interlayer for application in firefighting E-textiles. The hierarchical nanofiber yarns, comprising a stainless-steel core electrode, a PI/MXene interlayer and PI outer tribo-layer, exhibit enhanced triboelectric performance due to the charge-trapping capabilities of MXene, which preventing the recombination of triboelectric and induced charges. When the MXene content in the charge-trapping interlayer reached 1 wt%, the corresponding TENG achieved its optimal output performance, with an output voltage of 153 V and a current of 13.13 μA and a peak power density of 0.84 W/m 2 under optimal conditions. It also demonstrates exceptional thermal stability, maintaining stable output at temperatures up to 400 °C. The integration of the TENG into E-textiles enables real-time monitoring of firefighters’ physical activities and location tracking, significantly enhancing their safety and operational efficiency in fire scenarios. Additionally, the TENG powers electroluminescent yarns, improving visibility in dense smoke and dust environments. This research opens new avenues for the application of smart wearable systems in high-temperature environments, providing effective strategies for ensuring the safety of firefighters in fire rescue operations.

Temperature-triggered fire warning PEG@wood powder/carbon nanotube/calcium alginate composite aerogel and the application for firefighting clothing

Yushu Wang,Jinru Liu,Yuhang Zhao,Yi Qin,Zhenyu Zhu,Zhicai Yu,Hualing He

The design and exploitation of highly fire-safe aerogel with ultrasensitive fire-warning response and highly efficient thermal management capabilities are urgently needed to protect firefighters from burn injuries during fire operations and rescue. Herein, an ultralight temperature-triggered fire-warning aerogel composited of polyethylene glycol (PEG)@modified wood powder (MW)/amino-functionalized carbon nanotube (A-CNT)/calcium alginate (CA) (abbreviated as P@MW-A-CA) was fabricated. Benefiting the rapid decrease in electrical resistance of A-CNT at high temperatures, P@MW-A-CA achieved an ultrafast fire warning response time of ∼2.03 s when exposed to fire. Meanwhile, PEG was encapsulated into MW and acted as microtubule phase-change material (P@MW) in aerogel to effectively delay the heat penetration into P@MW-A-CA. The stiff MW served as the backbone endowed the fire-warning aerogel a “stiff-soft” structure that increased the mechanical resilience. P@MW-A-CA achieve flyweight density (0.038 g/cm 3 ), low thermal conductivity (0.06233 ± 0.0012 W/m⋅K), and outstanding self-extinguishment (<1.02 s). This work provides an environmental friendliness approach to design an ultralight early fire-warning aerogel in firefighting clothing for enhancing the fire safety of firefighters.

An Ultralight Self-Powered Fire Alarm e-Textile Based on Conductive Aerogel Fiber with Repeatable Temperature Monitoring Performance Used in Firefighting Clothing

Hualing He,Jinru Liu,Yushu Wang,Yuhang Zhao,Yi Qin,Zhenyu Zhu,Zhicai Yu,Jinfeng Wang

Firefighting protective clothing is an essential equipment that can protect firefighters from burn injuries during the firefighting process. However, it is still a challenge to detect the damage of firefighting protective clothing at an early stage when firefighters are exposed to excessively high temperature in fire cases. Herein, an ultralight self-powered fire alarm electronic textile (SFA e-textile) based on conductive aerogel fiber that comprises calcium alginate (CA), Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs), and silver nanowires (Ag NWs) was developed, which achieved ultrasensitive temperature monitoring and energy harvesting in firefighting clothing. The resulting SFA e-textile was integrated into firefighting protective clothing to realize wide-range temperature sensing at 100–400 °C and repeatable fire warning capability, which could timely transmit an alarm signal to the wearer before the firefighting protective clothing malfunctioned in extreme fire environments. In addition, a self-powered fire self-rescue location system was further established based on the SFA e-textile that can help rescuers search and rescue trapped firefighters in fire cases. The power in the self-powered fire location system was offered by an SFA e-textile-based triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG). This work provided a useful design strategy for the preparation of ultralight wearable temperature-monitoring SFA e-textile used in firefighting protective clothing.

Integrated Temperature–NH3 Multiplex Sensing Fibers Enabled by Programmable Assembly of MXene@MoS2 Heterojunction and p/n-Type Thermoelectric Core for Firefighting Clothing

Zhou Mi,Huang Lele,Wan Yuhang,Jiang Qing,Qu Xueru,Mia Md Hasib,Xu Jie,Gao Chao,Hou Lin,Yu Zhicai,He Hualing

Firefighting clothing provides essential safeguards for firefighters while engaging in fire suppression and life rescue operations. However, the inability to actively detect hazardous gas and self-thermal degradation of conventional firefighting clothing induce critical safety threats to firefighters. Herein, we design a dual-mode perceptual sensor via programmable assembly of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene@MoS 2 nanocomposite in dual-mode triaxial structural aerogel fiber (DM-TSF) for both selective NH 3 and temperature monitoring. The DM-TSF is prepared through triaxial wet spinning, with an alternating p / n -type thermoelectric (TE) core, a signal decoupling aramid nanofibers layer, and an NH 3 sensing outer sheath. The TE core is composed of alternately interconnected p -type/SWCNT and n -type SWCNT/Polyethyleneimine, which exhibits high TE efficiency (8.44 μV K −1 for p -segment, 7.44 μV K −1 for n -segment) and wide-range (10–500 °C) temperature monitoring in DM-TSF. Furthermore, the abundant adsorption sites and high-density Schottky heterojunctions of the Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene@MoS 2 nanocomposite in the outer sheath enabled DM-TSF to exhibit an outstanding sensitivity (3.14% ppm −1 @20 ppm) and high selectivity for NH 3 . A portable wireless system based on DM-TSF was further developed and integrated into firefighting clothing for temperature and NH 3 monitoring, triggering alarms within 2 s and 28 s, respectively. This work sheds new light on the fabrication of intelligent multiplex hazard detection fibers that can respond to multi-hazard elements, thereby enhancing firefighters’ safety in complex fire scenarios. A temperature-adaptive component-dynamic-coordinated strategy for high-performance elastic conductive fibers

Zhang Yue,Ming Zechang,Zhou Zijie,Wei Xiaojie,Huang Jingjing,Zhang Yufan,Li Weikang,Zhu Liming,Wang Shuang,Wu Mengjie,Lu Zeren,Zhou Xinran,Xiong Jiaqing

Temperature-adaptive elastic conductive fibers (ECFs) are crucial for seamlessly integrating electronic textiles, promoting the development of wearables, soft robotics, and high/low-temperature electronics. Realizing ECFs with balanced elasticity, conductivity, and temperature adaptivity remains challenging due to the difficulty of coupling the mechano-electrical-thermal properties at a microscale fiber. We design a wet-spun ECF consisting of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), silver flakes (AgFKs) and liquid metal microspheres (LMMSs) with regularly arranged filler architecture, revealing a cold/thermal stretching activated tricomponent-dynamic-coordination mechanism for autonomously-enhanced electrical conductivity (from ~1070 S cm −1 at 25 °C to 1160 S cm −1 at −30 °C and 3020 S cm −1 at 180 °C) and improved electrical stability to sustain 1000 stretching cycles (60% strain at 80 °C). The fiber exhibits scalability and favorable knittability, demonstrating e-textiles such as biomedical electrodes, high/low-temperature near-field communication gloves, and intelligent firefighting suits. The autonomous mechano-thermo-electrical coupling strategy can inspire high-performance and environment-adaptive ECFs for extreme applications.

Liangyuan Qi,Wei Cai,Tianyang Cui,Bichen Lin,Zefan Feng,Jing Gao,Guangyong Jiang,Wenyue Guo,Chuanshen Wang,Bin Fei,Jixin Zhu,Yuan Hu,Weiyi Xing,Lei Song

Even though the huge potential in significantly decreasing the energy consumption for cooling buildings and the human body is presented by radiative cooling technology, there is still a long way to realize its real-commercial application, considering comprehensive performances, such as safety, comfort, longevity, and production cost. Inspired by the biological micro-nano structures of Cyphochilus, we develop a one-step, large-scale, and low commercial-cost method to prepare multifunctional composite textiles, with effective cooling, fire safety, and directional water transportation. The high emissivity (96.8 %) in the atmospheric window and high reflectivity (97.1 %) in the solar waveband are successfully achieved. When exposed to direct sunlight, composite textiles can achieve up to 5 °C below commercial textiles at a solar intensity of 750 W•m −2 . Besides, the directional water transportation and the excellent mechanical strength further improve the practical application. This work proposes a radiatively cooled composite textile to achieve personal thermal management and fire protection to meet the needs of specialty garments such as firefighting suits.
